Detailed Reviews
Unfortunately our visit was in order to attend a funeral and deal with the affairs of the deceased. However we found the time spent at the hotel to be relaxing and comfortable that it made the circumstances much more bearable.
After finding difficulties booking elsewhere it was comforting to find somewhere that was able to satisfy our needs. The initial telephone enquiry was friendly and welcoming. The booking was made on-line direct with the hotel.
The hotel is very safe following the government guidelines with hand sanitiser available and social distancing encouraged. There are a number of air purifying machines located in the hotel.
We were made to feel welcome on arrival.
We booked a king-size room. It was well presented and furnished. The bed was very comfortable. It is an old building with interesting features. We loved the fact the bathroom had modern chrome and glass fittings next to ancient wooden beams.
You were provided with a menu for breakfast to order the previous day. This was delivered to the room at your preferred time. The breakfast was of good quality.
There was an evening meal available. This consisted of one item which could be ordered in advance. The hotel does a takeaway service on Friday and Saturday which means the choice is wider on those days. We had the evening meal on two of the three nights that we stayed. This was great quality and was served in the room.
We would recommend the hotel and would like to return in the future in better circumstances.

We stayed for one night on the way to Wales.
Our room was excellent. Spacious and clean with a lovely large comfy bed.
The fittings in the shower room / toilet are of high quality with a powerful shower and good water pressure.
The Tea/coffee in-room facilities were handy.
We drank a few drinks in bar. The drinking rooms are great and full of character.
We also had our evening meal at the hotel. The service and quality of food were first class.
The hotel is situated in the middle of town so you are right on top of everything.
Breakfast was great. Again, good quality food and you are looked after by an excellent team.
I would highly recommend a staying and we would use again if in the area.
A charming hotel with great staff; well worth a visit.

We recently stayed at the Kings Head Hotel for a long weekend, along with storm Dennis which put the dampers on things..........only slightly. The hotel has a great charm and character from the Library to the Bar and stairs to the rooms!
The car park is at the rear of the property off a one way street just past the hotels main entrance. The entry in our SUV took a little manoeuvring but was fine, there are limited spaces and some of which are shared with the local residents. From the car park there is a rear entrance for pedestrians, this goes through an outside patio area into the reception.
The staff are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. We stayed on the 2nd floor in room 14 with our Yorkshire Terrier. The two flights of stairs that lead up to the 2nd floor and spiral are rather steep, so with my new knee it was a challenge but hand rails on both sides made it easier. On the Friday night we had pre-booked a table in the Library for our Valentines night meal, everything was laid out and we chose from the Valentines menu and standard menu. The Pork Belly bites to share followed by the local fish and fillet steak with Diane sauce, accompanied by a bottle of Spanish Tempranillo and G & T’s. Again the waiting staff were fantastic and so was the food.
We had breakfast in the Library both mornings during our stay which was a good choice of cereals, juices, pastries and cooked breakfasts, coffee and tea was made to order.
Due to storm Dennis Saturday was a total washout although we did take a drive out but returned to the bar where there was a good mix of locals and guests, it has a good vibe so we stayed in there and ate again.
We would definitely stay here again so we can explore the town and surrounding areas more, we would also recommend this establishment either to eat, stay or just have a drink in the bar or library.

+1
We stayed in room 15 the twin room. It was clean, spacious and comfortable. Only downside was the unexpected visitor of the paranormal kind. He was a good one though that likes playing practical jokes.
There was plenty of hot water for the showers.
The breakfast was I would say is in the top 5 of the best breakfasts. Would have been better if the chef didn't serve just 1/2 of mushroom or black pudding. The poached eggs were just right and the sausages you could tell they were not the cheap ones, good quality and meaty. A good choice of fruit juices, fruit, cereal and yogurt.
My Carer advised me that the bar had served an excellent pint of local beer and my brother in law ( who is very fussy ) enjoyed his pint.
They have a secure carpark but the entrance is quite tricky getting in from the High Street but it is easier if you drive from St Mary's Street.
We will definitely will be visiting again, maybe to another room!😉

We stayed here for a one night getaway. We arrived a lot earlier than check-in and our room was ready.
Our room was stunning, it had a huge four poster bed right in the middle and there was no dust, or dirt anywhere to be found. Bathroom was beautiful and with the little extras we all love. Towels were really fluffy too.
We had a meal in the evening which was divine, and breakfast in the morning was really yummy too. Plenty of choice for both meals and they were more than happy to meet my fussy needs and change of mind over drinks at breakfast :)
We had a couple of drinks in the bar afterwards and this was highly entertaining from other personnel in the bar although managed by the staff expertly when they started to get too rowdy. Well priced across the board too.
Service and staff where excellent and we would definitely book and stay again. We would highly recommend, even just for food!

My husband and I recently stayed at The King’s head hotel on a weekend away to celebrate his 50th birthday. It was a wonderful base from which to explore the region and it’s proximity to local
Shops and restaurants made it such a convenient location. Mew had a fabulous time, the food was delicious and the service attentive but unobtrusive. The bar was a cozy welcoming sanctuary to return to after each day of exploring and the atmosphere was exceptionally friendly and relaxed. Wonderful array of speciality tonics and lots of lovely doggies to fuss thanks to the Hotel’s fantastic dog friendly policy.
I can’t recommend the place enough. Thank you to all

We had so looked forward to a couple of nights away in Ross on Wye at the Kings Head , but sadly we were hugely disappointed with our stay and couldn’t recommend the hotel to anyone . We had a message 4 days before arriving to say that the restaurant and bar would be closed during our stay due to staff shielding . We weren’t at such short notice able to book anything else but were very sad that we wouldn’t be able to use the bar / Restaurant. When we arrived we were directed through the back entrance as they weren’t using the front , it was such a bad initial impression the back of the hotel is tatty and leads through the car park there were empty takeaway containers in the alley and Pigeon mess everywhere we had to use this entrance for the rest of our stay . The room itself was ok but only ok it was clean and the bed was comfy but there was no effort to do anything over and above ok the decor was drab, the view over the car park was depressing and there was the faint hum of a generator noise outside the window, there weren’t even any biscuits ! . The stairs leading up to the room were grubby and the carpet needed a good clean .
There was no mention or apologies for the lack of facilities we actually asked if we could sit in the bar area in the evening as there was no where to sit except in our room and were told it was difficult as passers by would think they were open so we couldn’t really . . I really think the hotel should have considered somehow accommodating the customers in the bar area and perhaps given a complimentary drink even to say sorry for the fact there were no facilities ? Or even offered a discount as we really didn’t get what we paid for . Also found the reception poor we found a map of the town on our last day on a chair in the lobby , this would have been great when we arrived but we weren’t offered any advice or information you would normally expect when checking into a hotel . Breakfast too I’m afraid was poor , my husband had the the veggie sausages and said they were were awful . The normal sausages are of a very low quality and there wasn’t much choice for breakfast no fruit or yogurt .
Also no room service because of covid ...really ??!
All in all came away feeling cross we’d spent money on staying here and very very disappointed that we hadn’t had the lovely break we’d hoped for .

Response from James Vidler, Owner at The King's Head Hotel
Responded 24 Jun 2021
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We are sorry you were disappointed with your stay. We take the health and safety of both our team members and our guests very seriously. As a responsible employer, we provide regular Covid tests to our staff. Unfortunately, one team member, despite having almost no symptoms, had a positive test result, this was confirmed later with a PCR test. Consequently, almost all our front of house team had to self-isolate for ten days. As we only had a few team members unaffected, we had no choice but to close, our restaurant and bar. We emailed you five days before your arrival to warn of this, and you could of course, without charge, cancelled your reservation. The King's Head is, in the very centre of Ross, surrounded by bars, cafes and restaurants. Although we had some cancellations, we were able to refill most our rooms, with new guests, who were happy to stay on the B&B basis, the hotel was having to operate under. I’m sure it’s disappointing not to have a bar and restaurant available, especially when you had this in mind when booking. But we had no choice and did give you plenty of opportunity to cancel. As part of the risk assessment for Covid, bedrooms are serviced only every third day. This limits the risk for both guests and team members, from entering a resident’s bedroom. Before servicing and between stays, all our bedrooms are ventilated and then disinfected with a fogging machine. Likewise, because of Covid, all brochures etc, are not on display as normal, as this would have the potential risk of cross contamination. We are sorry you didn’t enjoy our local butchers award winning sausages or the vegan sausages.

We stopped overnight after a wedding. We were not able to check in to our room before as the wedding started early, however, were able to leave our bags & collect our room key beforehand which was so helpful.
The hotel is lovely and olde world full of old beams and history. Our room was super, spotlessly clean, a huge bed and great black out blinds. Breakfast was really tasty and cooked to order, we were really impressed that the hotel uses locally sourced providers, plenty of choice too.
The staff at the hotel are a credit to the management, so helpful and friendly. Thanks for a great, albeit short stay.

An old hotel (hundreds of years old) on the main road in Ross. Full of character and therefore the stairs are steep and winding with no lift and the floor boards creak a lot! The staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfasts are of good quality, with the usual English breakfast together with alternatives like avocado or smoked salmon with a choice of eggs on sourdough toast. There is a nice bar area and sitting room. The beds are comfortable with good quality bed linen and there are large soft towels. However, if you are a light sleeper, ask for a room on the back on the second floor, otherwise noise from the road or the room above may disturb you. However, if you go to bed early, at the weekend locals drinking on the terrace at the back may also disturb you. Free car parking but a tight entrance and if you arrive late you may not get a space, but there is a public car park nearby.
We chose a superior room, which was larger with a large king bed. However, we found a few small touches we would expect in a superior room missing, such as no bath robes, box of tissues or biscuits. Tea and coffee were PG Tips and Nescafé, I would expect better brands. Overall a nice stay.

We stayed at the Kings Head on the way to do an alternative Christmas Day with our daughter.
Leaving from Cheshire this would leave a short drive on Christmas Day to our alternative Christmas Day.
Booking and discussing our requirements was so easy with the hotel as they replied to contact straight away.
Fantastic friendly staff with a great attitude towards the customer, we would definitely stay here again.
