This small family run hotel has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We were welcomed and seen to our room by the owner. It’s certainly well positioned just off the main A40 and an easy walk into Ross on Wye. The decor in some areas and in the family room we stayed in was a little tired and could be improved however that is reflected in the tariff. The evening meal menu descriptions on the black board did not do justice to the plates we were presented. All were freshly cooked, served with side of veg and my husbands fish came with lyonnaise potatoes (unexpected) , all of our meals were really tasty and well presented, and did I mention value for money. A discount was applied on the bill as we were staying in the hotel.

I stayed here solo over a weekend. The welcome at reception was warm and friendly, and I was shown to a lovely, cosy single room, filled with little personal touches. I particularly loved that there was a hand-decorated bottle of bubble bath left in the bathroom.

The food in the restaurant was delicious, and beautifully presented - I genuinely had one of the best steaks I've ever had here, and the full english breakfast couldn't be faulted. I was also given suggestions for local attractions to check out the next day, which was extremely helpful.

All in all, it was a lovely experience, and I'll certainly be staying again.

A lovely old building on the edge of Ross on Wye with a garden patio and plenty of parking.
It has many querky features from oak beams and low ceilings to servants call bells in the foyer.
Our spacious family room comprised of 3 sparate areas - large area with double bed and sofa bed. 4 irregular steps lead to a small ante room containing a dressing table, chair, fridge and beverage facilities. Through a further small door you entered a large bathroomwhere there was an over bath shower and a sofa alongside the sink and toilet.
Breakfast was in the large light airy restaurant.
There was no written menu but our family’s varying individual needs were well catered for. Cereal, juice and fruit were offered buffet style and all else at table service.
My cooked breakfast was excellent - well cooked, hot and delicious.
The bar was well stocked with a variety of local snd traditional beverages.
Managment and staff were friendly and attentive.
Husbands only complaint was ‘ the birds started singing too early…’

We booked three rooms here to use as a base when meeting up with friends and for the money we paid I don't think we could have chosen better! A very quirky Georgian building in which every room has its own design. All of the rooms we were allocated appeared to have been refurbished at some time and were comfortably furnished with decent beds and good bathroom or shower. Refreshment trays were replenished every day and the rooms serviced daily to an acceptable standard. As this is such an old building I think it would be impossible to keep it spotless and think that Steve and Georgina do a cracking job! We had room 7 which was perfect for our stay with views out to the river Wye and Ross.
The breakfasts were fantastic with a good choice of a cold starter (best fresh strawberries ever!) followed by full English and toast and preserves. We ate dinner here one evening and were pleasantly surprised by the wide choice, quality and very reasonable prices. All five of us enjoyed our meals. The desserts were big enough to feed at least two people! I would highly recommend the Eton Mess but only if you haven't had a large main course as it was massive. My friend had ordered it and, although we all had delicious sweets, as soon as we saw hers we all wished we had ordered it.
I had read some negative reviews prior to our stay and wonder if we were at the same place? We did not expect to check in early and although this was pointed out to us on our early arrival, it was not done in an offhand manner at all. In fact quite the opposite as we were told we could leave the car in the car park and were given directions on how to walk to the nearest pub which was only a couple of minutes down the road. We found the hotel owners to be friendly and Steve always had a chat with us at breakfast time even though he was obviously very busy.
All in all I think this hotel is the best value for money in this price bracket that we have ever stayed in. Taking out what you would expect to pay for such a decent breakfast, I don't think you could book into even one of the "economy" brand hotels for the price we paid. As value for money I would highly recommend Castle Lodge and our thanks go to Steve and Georgina for making our stay such a pleasant one.

We stayed for 2 nights, the location is good, within walking distance of a good pub and the river, Ross-on-Wye is approx a 15 minutes pleasant walk.
The room was large, the ensuite was small but adequate.
Generally the hotel needs a bit of TLC, it seems to have been renovated in recent years according to other reviews but we felt it was tired and in need of some work, also a bit of window cleaning would improve the dark rooms significantly.
There is a fusty smell to the entrance and stairs although the room smelt ok.
The double bed was quite uncomfortable and creaked at every movement, meaning my husband had a bad nights sleep. The single was much more comfortable.
The owner seemed a little jaded and fed up with the whole thing, making comments which were aimed at humour but were more sarcastic to the listener.
Breakfast was adequate but there was no 'menu' to suggest what could be offered, instead we were told 'what do you want', and cooked breakfast with no beans was odd.
Would we return? No.

Such a lovely little hotel. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Room and bathroom were excellent with tea making facilities, biscuits, a pot of sweets, TV, fan and everything you could need in the bathroom. The food in the restaurant was fantastic - perfectly cooked and presented beautifully. Would highly recommend and stay again. I only wish we could have stayed longer.

We stopped two nights at the Castle Lodge Hotel, it being our first visit to Ross on Wye. The hotel is just out of the town centre, it is a very pleasant 15 minute walk along a road or along the river bank.
We had a warm welcomed from the owner and shown to our room on the front of the beautiful building a large room, very comfy bed with very nice bathroom, very quite. Plenty of secure free parking.
There is small bar, on the Friday evening we had a very tasty sandwich. The breakfast was very good and served by a wonderful, friendly member of staff.
We would definitely return and look forward to visiting Ross again.

Stayed one night. Warm welcome and good service. The room was warm and comfortable with a great view towards Ross. General cleanliness was good although the lid of the kettle and sugar pot would benefit from a little extra attention.
It was lovely to have a bath too. The breakfast was well cooked and tasty and the young waiter was very polite and helpful.

On arrival we were greeted by a very welcoming receptionist and helped with luggage to our room which is a rare occurrence these days. Very pleasant hard working family run hotel whose service is very professional as well as personable. Well situated for pleasant walks around the area and into Ross- on -Wye along the river bank. The room was clean and comfortable with all the practical extras ie. alarm clock, fan etc. and very quiet. The retro theme in the bed room was unusual and we enjoyed the change.

Requested a double room and as per review from Greg, he is on his own, requested and paid for single room. This is the room we originally stayed in. Charged a double room rate but clearly a single room as per review from Greg, and as per my complaint. Poor conditions and very small.

Toilet seat broken, stained and dirty. Broken tiles, cracked flooring and both dirty. Stained carpets, walls, furnishings, decor and doors and frames. Obvious spillages on furnishings, furniture, mirrors, walls and carpets, mugs, and kettle. Poor curtains and netting, dirty, old and not adequate. Stained and old bedding, towels with hairs. Left towels as per signage for replacement but wet towels placed back on the dry towel that we had. Dirty windows, ledge and sills. Mould and insulation exposed.Toilet blocks and doesn't flush until after five to six flushes.

I was mis sold a room, which in no uncertain terms was not fit to stay in. The photos do not do it justice, the disrepair, the grime, and dust. The second room was a double room, more space but yet again toilet issues, stains, spillage marks, dust, disrepair and grime.
I really did try to resolve the matter with them, but was faced with rudeness

I took over 80 photos to support my review
