Very disappointing roast beef Sunday lunch.

It reminded me of school dinners. The vegetables were completely over cooked. Virtually no seasoning therefore a very bland taste, especially the gravy. The beef itself was well cooked but there was only two small slices.

The Clifton Arms Hotel stands out to many for its picturesque location, offering stunning views that enhance events, particularly weddings. While guests have called out the hotel's cleanliness and the vibrant atmosphere enriched by live music, opinions on service and value diverge, with experiences ranging from exceptional attention to slow and disorganized assistance. Although the comfortable amenities and excellent dining options earn praise, some travelers note the need for refurbishing and improving room conditions, pointing out that the rooms can be outdated and not always well-suited for disabled guests.

We got married at the Clifton Arms Hotel on the 16th July and had the most perfect day (says a lot as we are both perfectionist) Bernard, Charlotte and the team couldn’t do enough for us in the months leading up and on the big day.

The hotel itself has been refurbished to a high standard. We were in a different sea view room for the three nights we stayed but they were all beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean with lovely bathrooms. The bedrooms have a good selection of toiletries including hand sanitiser which I thought was a nice touch given the current situation. The food was also very good and I throughly enjoyed the fresh pancakes for breakfast!

All the staff were smartly dressed, professional and very accommodating and it’s them that really make the Clifton Arms Special.

We have already booked for our wedding anniversary next July but hoping to fit in another visit in the meantime.

My wife and I stayed 21 August 2021 arriving at 13.30hrs, noting that booking in is officially 14.00hrs. We politely enquired whether a room was available and was met with an aggressive “none of the rooms have been released by house-keeping, booking in is from 2pm”. We were allocated room 119 (after 14.00hrs) and on entry to the room we noticed a loud humming noise to discover a ventilation system directly below the window, which for us would have made a peaceful night’s sleep impossible, please refer to the attached photo.
We requested an alternative room and we were allocated room 210, which was much quieter (so we thought). On returning from a show at 10’ish to our horror we discovered a wedding party/function directly below our window. We were not advised at the time of booking that this function would be occurring, otherwise we would have booked alternative accommodation. So, between the hours of 10pm-12am we had to endure the disco and associated noise.
The breakfast! I chose the Clifton at £14.50 which comprises a total of 1 x sausage, 1 x rasher of bacon, 1 x poached egg (over cooked), 1 x tomato, 1 x mushroom, 1 x ramekin of beans. I requested toast and was provided warmed bread! Absolute disgrace!
Were we asked if we enjoyed breakfast, NO! Were we asked if our stay was ok when booking out, NO! Obviously, the staff simply don’t care and that’s fine; we won’t ever book this Fawlty Towers again.

Dear B7711BKgaryc Thank you for your review - we always welcome all feedback, both positive & negative, & it is always taken on board & used to enhance our service. With regards to check-in we operate a check-in policy from 2pm to give us ample time to service the rooms & if rooms are ready before this time we of course allow an earlier check-in. I am sorry you found the room noisy, any noise from the extraction system is minimal and is turned off when the kitchen closes however am pleased we were able to move you to a different room. The second room was allocated as far away from the function as possible & on the second floor so any noise should have been very minimal. We provide a fully plated breakfast service ensuring all meals are prepared fresh to order, we pride ourselves on our high quality of food & receive great feedback for it so am sorry you were disappointed. I am disappointed in the comments outlined in your review & that you didn't enjoy your time with us, however, I believe we did everything we could to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

Staff and accommodation first class. I got a bit bored with the food after three evenings, the daytime menu is larger and better. The best things I ate was the meat terrine with citrus salad and the crème brûlée. The main courses were an attempt to be posh but didn’t quite pull it off, and some of the fish dishes were quite small which wasn’t a problem for me but I could see more hearty eaters left wanting a bit more. For £15 you should be making your own burgers, it would take less than five minutes, the one I had reminded me of Birds Eye. One evening I had a serious problem with the fish course, the restaurant manager said he would speak to the chef, what good that would do I don’t know, I’d have liked to have confronted him myself. One of the nights was slightly busier than the others and we couldn’t get served in the bar, as only one person was serving, I see a previous visitor has commented on this and I wonder what it would be like in the height of summer. Overall it was good and I would definitely stay again, but perhaps go out for evening meal, as there are lots of places about five minutes walk away, and a good real ale pub at the back of the car park. My only problem with the room which was absolutely lovely was that the bedside lamps were no good for reading, and they need to get some of those little bright ones lots of hotels have now, otherwise next time I’ll just bring my head torch. Wi-Fi was also good in the room so full marks for that at most places it isn’t.

We stayed 2 nights at The Clifton Arms and didn't want to leave! This is the most perfect hotel and we couldn't fault anything. Our room was modern, spotlessly clean, very comfortable with a sitting area next to the bedroom and the biggest bathroom we have ever seen! (Room 107).The staff were so welcoming and remained friendly and kind throughout our stay - always attentive and nothing was too much trouble for them. The breakfasts were amazing and the food was hot and freshly cooked. We had dinner on our second night and it was beautiful. A delightful dining room with food that tasted delicious and presented in the most attractive way. Our compliments to the chef! The lounge near reception was extremely relaxing and we enjoyed chilling for a couple of hours reading our books by the fire and watching the world go by. Staff asked if we wanted to order drinks and were always on hand should we need them. Special mention to Dominic and Pam. Perfect location for walking into Lytham and the Lowther Gardens. We will definitely return and for a longer stay. Thank you so much!

We booked a two night stay here in June after being told there was a room available with disabled facilities suitable for a wheelchair user. The hotel is in a lovely setting and the common parts have been refurbished to a high standard but our trip was a disaster due to lack of adequate disabled access.
The room sold as having "disabled access" is not fit for purpose. There is an en suite wet room but there are no grab rails around the toilet and only one small hand rail at the shower. We were assured that portable grab rails would be brought to the room and in the meantime were advised to use the disabled toilet by the exit to the car park. There was insufficient space to the side of the bed to allow for a wheelchair transfer so we had to reconfigure the room and pile up excess furniture in a corner to allow wheelchair access. We stayed one night and were obliged to use the disabled toilet by the car park which was in an increasingly poor state of cleanliness as the evening went on. The following morning it was not possible to safely have a shower, there were still no grab rails and none of the staff could provide us with an update. The receptionist told us the manager was "very mobile" that day and could not be found and told us to lodge any comments or complaints by email. We paid the bill and left.

Having noticed the new terrace, we decided to call in just for coffee. The refurb of the interior and the new terrace are rather impressive, although I think we didn't see it at it's best as there are few tables very spread out so I expect there will be a better conviviality once restrictions ease down a bit more and more people start using it . On a Wednesday afternoon, albeit a sunny one, we thought it strange that they had so few customers given the number of people out and about in town and being a new venue. Once we ordered we realised why, as we were told the terrace is only open to those staying at the hotel at the moment, although we were not questioned at all when entering the hotel and taking our seat. However, the staff graciously did not ask us to leave, which would have been a bit self-defeating given the number of empty tables. The staff were friendly and attentive. The coffee was priced at a level befitting a 4-star hotel, at nearly 8 pounds for one jug serving two (plus delicious shortbread biscuits). We thought it a bit dull at the moment to be fair, although I expect it will be a nicer experience and atmosphere once they get more customers through.

Thank you for your recent review. I’m delighted that you were impressed with the refurbishment and new terrace. As you’ve intimated, we are trying our best to follow the COVID-19 guidelines, especially with regards to social distancing. We therefore have to be careful about the number of bookings we take at the moment as we have to allow for the fact residents staying in the hotel may wish to sit in the bar, snug and/or terrace. The terrace certainly isn’t residents only. We cannot take bookings though as weather dependant so we take bookings for the restaurant and will happily move customers to the terrace should the weather allow and we have the availability. I think we are all looking forward to the restrictions being lifted and I hope you will return as I’m sure the atmosphere will be much improved. Kind regards, Victoria

Ever since the younger generation of the Webb family took over this lovely hotel it seems to have gone from bad to worse. True the refurbishment of the downstairs is very tasteful, but the seating is extremely uncomfortable and the tables in the dining room look as though they would not be out of place in a local Harvester. The Clifton was always a hotel that was elegant and classy where people came to stay and enjoy a wonderful meal or better still an afternoon tea when it was virtually impossible to obtain a table as it was always full.
I believe a refurbishment of the bedrooms is to be commenced in the near future but a beautiful hotel is no use if the staff are not happy and the service reflects this. The reviews on Trip Advisor reflect the mood and attitude of staff that are being badly let down by what seems a family that are not addressing the needs of both visitors, whether staying or transitory, and staff.
The hotel is in an amazing location overlooking Lytham Green and virtually in the centre of Lytham with its wealth of wonderful shops and history. Let's hope that 2023 is an improvement on a very sorry 2022.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your experience at the hotel. I am sincerely sorry that you had cause to bring these issues to my attention and that you feel disappointed with your recent experience at the hotel. I can assure you that I have taken your concerns seriously. I welcome all feedback, both positive and negative, and always take this on board to improve our service and product. The owners have invested a substantial amount during the lockdown to refurbish the hotel into a place, accessible for all and in keeping with its historic past. I am also very fortunate to have a dedicated and loyal team who strive for excellence on a daily basis. The hotel is delighted to announce the bedroom refurbishment programme which commences this month and there is a great deal of excitement surrounding these changes. I really look forward to having the opportunity to welcoming you back to the hotel and giving you the service experience that we are renowned for. Please feel free to contact me to discuss any concerns you may have at gm@cliftonarmslytham.com Kindest Regards Adam Hyatt Draper Hotel General Manager

My brother and I took our mum for a birthday afternoon tea recently, she enjoyed it but I have higher standards. It was all a bit meagre and rather a let down. The amuse bouche of a small cup of soup, cheese straw and (bought in) vegetable spring roll was a nice touch. The sandwiches were good but as mentioned meagre - three little pieces only! The real problem with afternoon tea at The Clifton Arms is that the cakes and scones are awful - I mean really terrible. It looked like a toddler had baked them plus they tasted of nothing. The scone was stale. The cakes were shabbily put together and there was a fruit (I think) mousse that tasted of nothing but sugar. At places like Claridges afternoon tea is, of course more expensive, however not that much more expensive given the quality - beautiful patisserie and amazing sandwiches which keep coming and coming until you can’t eat anymore. Perhaps the manager of The Clifton Arms should take a trip to London in order to learn how to put on afternoon tea properly.
