Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Having viewed the website, we mistakenly assumed that the rooms would have good views, similar to those shown on the pictures for the restaurant. Unfortunately our double aspect room had views of the car park and felt overlooked. It was, however, comfortable, clean and quiet. The overall feeling we had in the room may put us off staying again. The meals overall were good and we felt that both the food, drinks and cocktails were well priced. As well as the main menu (shown on the website) there was a specials board each evening consisting of one starter, a catch of the day and a dessert. On one evening we had the steaks which were perfectly cooked and very tender. The fish and seafood dishes were good, although we felt that the sauces could have been tastier. All of the main courses were served with a good selection of vegetables. We loved the chocolate fondant pudding which is difficult to get right - here it was spot on! The breakfasts were fine but not as good as other places we have stayed. There was no option for toast other than seeded bread which was a shame. The staff were very pleasant and efficient. Unfortunately, overall this hotel wasn’t for us.

The service is always professional and prompt. The setting is wonderful and it’s always warm and cosy with the wood burner. The food is delicious and interesting. The scallops are my favourite! The beef is a popular choice of ours and is always cooked spot on. We just keep coming back here.

Enjoyed a recent stay at The Foveran. The food is a big winner. A very good menu offering good choices. The presentation was superb and delicious. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We had a double room which was spotlessly clean, warm and very comfortable. Would definitely stay here on our next visit back to the island. It deserves its high rating!

My partner and I had a brilliant meal in the restaurant tonight. A nice welcome from the friendly waitresses, relaxed with a drink before taken to our table. All our courses were delicious and no one rushed us it was very relaxing. The waitresses were very attentive and helpful.. Everything and everywhere was super and clean. Certainly worth 10 out of 10.

What a beautiful setting. Smallish menu but for me that is good thing. Service was hesitant due to two large tables of people but the young staff were SUPER. Quality of the food was excellent and I thought pretty reasonable for what we had. Have read some less than complimentary reviews but I have no complaints.

We will certainly book to stay and the Foveran again. This was our first visit to Orkney; thoroughly enjoyed our stay, only complaint 6 nights was not enough! Lovely comfortable spotlessly clean room with en-suite; lovely decor and furnishing TV and internet. We loved the pictures displayed so much we searched the gallery and bought three to take home. Couldn't fault the accommodation, staff or the meals in the restaurant, food was first class as was the wine.

We booked a table for 2 late September 2021. What a treat. Beautiful restaurant and very good food. It is a bit out of the way and in the dark we had a job to find it. If you want an out of the way stay then the reviews rate the rooms as good. If I came back to Kirkwall again, I would definitely think about staying and would book again for an evening meal.

Stayed here for a week in room 1 with a lovely view over scapa flow. Breakfast was amazing along with all the staff, who catered for our every need. Food in the restaurant at night, again excellent quality, with a good range of wines to complement the meals, however the menu is limited. This would not stop us staying there again.

This place is amazing. I am gluten free and I can honestly say this is the best place I have eaten possibly ever. The chef will play about with the menu so that you can eat what you would really like. The food is exceptional, the staff friendly and welcoming and the location beautiful
