Kirkwall Youth Hostel is a friendly and welcoming hostel close to the historic town and beautiful 12th-century St Magnus Cathedral. A former World War Two base and school hostel, Kirkwall Youth Hostel is located in a quiet location on the edge of the Royal Burgh of Kirkwall. Wi-Fi during your stay: We do our best to deliver a free Wi-Fi service but apologise that connectivity, particularly in our rural locations, can be intermittent due to the level of our current broadband provision along with high usage when the youth hostel is busy. Please be assured we are endeavouring to improve where we can. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed in a private room for two nights at the end of August. Very comfy bed, clean room and facilities, friendly helpful staff with good knowledge of the local area. Really good value for money and nothing to complain about!

I haven't joined this firm's tours but I have done several others and was appalled at the behaviour of a tour at Kirkwall Youth Hostel. The tour group had to get up at 4am for an early ferry and despite requests the night before from hostel staff and even an intervention during the night there was an unacceptable level of disturbance for other hostel guests- slammed doors, loud laughter for at least an hour from 4am. This is disgraceful and unprofessional and speaks volumes about the quality of the tour experience, which is not at all cheap.

Really lovely people staying there and working there, nice location and alright facilities for the price. I got abit cold but could easily warm up by using the radiator so that was fine. I got there late and was still able to check in smoothly. Good all around

The hostel is 15 minutes walk uphill from Kirkwall travel centre and town centre and slightly closer to the three main supermarkets. Nearly every bus in Orkney passes through the travel centre, so the hostel is an ideal base for exploring. The hostel is a conversion of a building from 1940's and is kept very clean. It has a slightly barracksy feel but does represent good value for money.

My husband and i were visiting Kirkwall and had difficulty in finding accomodation. We are great supporters of the YHA and were not dissappointed here. Very friendly staff. Clean rooms but could all do wiht a bit of an update. Near to the main sights in the town.

The hostel was easy to find and check in was quick - the man on reception was lovely and very helpful during our stay. Room spacious and comfortable. We both had a great sleep. Bathroom/shower facilities basic but clean. The water wasn't the warmest but I assume this was because I showered late at night. Never used the common area/kitchen/facilities so cannot comment on them. Would stay again if I was in Orkney as it was good value for money and just what we needed.

A handy place top stay for large parties. Very clean rooms and very friendly staff. Kirwall is a nice place to visit and there is loads to see on the islands. The hostel is a quick walk into town and there loads of taxis.

Hostel was very old and in need of repair - the window in room 13 was broken, the front door lock wouldn’t re-open when locked and the scalding water in the shower wasn’t great nor the slow drainage or the bugs in the light fitting. The cold tap in the toilet didn’t work and the soap dispensers in both the Women’s and Men’s toilet didn’t have soap in. The reception staff were friendly however and they had some nice Arran cosmetics for sale and the price was fair for 3 night’s accommodation.

We stayed here for three nights whilst visiting Kirkwall. The staff here were great. We arrived quite late on our first night and rang ahead whilst having dinner to check that we would be able to check in late, this was not a problem at all. Staff were great at letting us know about the local busses and directions to the city. The property itself is about a ten-fifteen minute walk from the cathedral in the Main Street. We chose to catch a taxi to and from the bus station with our bags as there was a bit of a hill, this was ~5 GBP, but if you’re happy to walk it’s definitely walking distance. We walked the rest of the time to the main area and without baggage it’s an easy walk with some lovely houses to be spotted along the way. We appreciated the out of hours door code as it made us a bit more reassured about security. The hostel is a converted army barracks, which means there was only wifi in the kitchen/living room. I quite liked this as it meant you were often meeting others in the main areas. Although we didn’t use the kitchen, it appeared to be quite large and people were always making meals there. The lounge had a tv and it was great to be able to watch sport and the news in there. There is a laundry, however, when I went to use it only one dryer was working and staff were washing towels etc from the hostel which meant there was a wait to use both the washer and dryer. If you’re staying for longer, you could hang things in the drying room, though we didn’t do this as we left early the next morning. The bathrooms were a bit on the old side. The toilet and sink rooms were clean and never had to wait to use this. The shower however was not great. The temperature was hard to get right, and as the shower curtain was too short the room flooded and I almost slipped- there was a rubber mat but this wasn’t much use once flooded. The rooms were good, however. Very comfortable and spacious for two adults. Doona was warm, and nice to have the beds made up for us upon arrival. If visiting Kirkwall, book well in advance to secure your accomodation.

I travelled to Orkney with a friend and we both really enjoyed our stay here. The staff were very welcoming and helpful upon arrival and throughout our stay. The atmosphere is really lovely and you tend to meet the other guests in the dining room in the morning and evenings, and everyone was just really friendly. The kitchen is brilliant, lots of space, all the cooking utensils one needs and lots of cupboard and fridge space for your food, etc. A big dining room right next to the kitchen with plenty of space for everyone. This is also where there's a good WIFI signal. There's a lounge beyond the dining room, but we didn't use it. The hostel is laid out in such a way that the communal spaces are well away from the bedrooms, so it's very quiet generally when you want to sleep. The bedrooms are basic with bunk beds, with basic mattresses, which I personally didn't find very comfortable, luckily there were only two of us in a 4 bed room, so I used the two spare duvets as a mattress topper. My friend who was there with me said he found the mattresses ok. Shower and WC facilities are also basic, and were very clean and there was plenty of hot water. We forgot to bring our own towels, but luckily you can hire towels, phew. The location of the hostel is great, it's just about near enough to be able to walk to Kirkwall. There are pretty good bus connections as far as we could tell and if you have a car / motorbike, there's a good sized free car park right behind the hostel. The hostel offers a continental style breakfast, which we tried on one of the mornings when we wanted a very early start, breakfast was fine, there's toast, jams, cheese, cereal, fruit, etc. Only snag was the coffee running out too quickly - there was only one pot and too many coffee drinkers. :-) Another thing I liked was that the hostel takes its recycling seriously. Very happy to have stayed here and would be very happy to come back again in the future.
