Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I have stopped in to this gem of hotel/bar several times while working in Kirkwall and surrounding area. Always a friendly smile at the bar where you can order dinner as well as unbelievable selection of whisky, beer, drinks which I assume they are known for. Have spoken to them about bringing the other half for holiday when I get a chance, they said to ring anytime direct. Much appreciated, and definitely recommend.

The bar had an odorous smell to it and the beer tasted off. When we asked the barman to swap the beer for something more fresh, he took personal insult and argued with us. So we left and went to the Ayre hotel on the waterfront.

Booked an executive single room in this vintage hotel that is not without its charms. It has all the basics but feels a bit dark and musty. It is in a good location in the middle of the old town, close to restaurants and shops, and there is a Coop grocery store just a block away. It is nice to have a restaurant where you can get dinner or a drink and the food is fine.

I have started coming to Orkney fairly regularly and there is nowhere better for a weekend escape than this place. The setting is comfortable and the whisky bar next door is a much appreciated little space of heaven. I was really taken by the customer service. From breakfast in the morning, Liz and the rest of her team provided a friendly service, ensuring coffee was topped up and providing informative local information. I noticed how particular they were with other customers requests and how willing they were to meet their expectations. For a comfortable and satisfying stay, I would look no further. The central location in Kirkwall is also handy for sightseeing and enjoying the rich food and drink offering of Kirkwall and the surrounding area.

We went to this cute whiskey bar in Kirkwall and we had dinner with friends. The food was excellent and the tasting whiskey was a really nice experience. The ambiance was old English country. We really had a good time and met nice people. We would highly recommend if you are in Kirkwall Orkney Islands.

Our evening meal in hotel was excellent , and affordable. Staff polite and attentive. We enjoyed the Scottish music in the background. Rooms very clean , warm and comfortable, would be nice to have a wee snack to go along with our tea . Overall very happy

I disagree with recent reviews. Reception was always nice and helpful, including staying open until we arrived late and lending us power converters. Our shower and bath were great. Not a picky eater, the mainstay of breakfast was good: croissants and traditional Scottish breakfast plate. The decor in a 400 year old historic building may be out of date, but befits the whole aura of the area. And the “dated” decor was clean and in good condition. I did not expect neo-decorations on Orkney Islands. I recommend it all.

We stayed here for three nights in June whilst touring Orkney on our bikes. The hotel was very accommodating about storing our bikes which was great. We notified the hotel that we would be arriving late on our first night (from the ferry) and this was no problem which was much appreciated. But as pointed out by other reviewers, the hotel is very tired and the customer service lacks enthusiasm. The decor is old fashioned. The bed was comfy but the shower hadn't been cleaned from the previous guests so there was hair and a soggy non-slip bathmat lurking in the shower tray. On the Friday evening we thought we'd enjoy a bit of telly after a hard day's cycling and a satisfying dinner at Lucano's, but the remote control didn't work and Reception said they couldn't fix it until the following day. After enquiring the following day, the tv was eventually replaced (we think they might have forgotten). If busy, the breakfast in the dining room does seem to get chaotic. The little touches that can really 'make' a place and can be so easy to implement were noticeably non-existant. Some dried fruit or local honey (which can be bought at the lovely deli down the road) for my porridge would have gone down a treat and local produce rather plastic sachets of cheap jam which are wasteful and a pain to open. Bowls of tinned fruit swimming in juice and a plate of watermelon with a few grapes or gala melon were ok but seemed to run out very quickly. Having packed up on our last morning I checked the room to make sure we hadn't lost anything...only to find a TV remote control stuck down the back of the drawers - is that why the tv didn't work?! There is no-one on Reception to say goodmorning to, have a friendly chat with every morning or to ask questions about the local area. No-one thanked us for our custom and said goodbye; we just put the plastic key in the box and set off on our way (we won't be coming back).

At £160 a night for B&B you expect something reasonable. But you would be sadly disappointed. The hotel is very very tired - 60’s decor and fittings and hugely needing a refit and major investment programme. Our whirlpool bath (for which we paid extra) had no plug and the temporary “universal” supplied leaked so badly that the water never got more than a centimetre deep. The service in the restaurant, while generally friendly and trying hard was totally chaotic - one morning despite being the first in to breakfast we were still waiting 40 minutes later to have our order taken and anything served - not even tea offered. There seemed no sense of sequencing and planning. One staff member was unfailingly surly and downright rude to fellow diners. I’m know the choice in Kirkwall is limited but there must be better options than this.. You have been warned!

Great location in Kirkwall, close to all the sights. Nice looking hotel. The building is well maintained. The Royal Cask Whisky Bar found in the hotel is excellent. The bar has a extensive whisky menu.
