We had a week's stay in this amazing late Victorian house overlooking Highland Park Distillery and just fell in love with it. Our room was in the tower, comfortable, quiet and beautifully decorated (Art Deco) with much thought and attention to detail, as was the rest of the house. Throughout the property beautiful original artwork distracted our attempts to promptly leave to go sightseeing elsewhere. The location was central to the main island - incredibly easy to go anywhere to explore Kirkwall and the rest of the islands.
The breakfast (mostly local produce) was probably the best I have had, ever, in any hotel that I have stayed in. You had to pre-order, the night before - but frankly, they could have placed anything in front of me and I would have eaten it. It was just such good quality and artistically presented.
They have a music room with a selection of instruments and I spent time playing their piano. I could see that if the weather turned bad and we could not go out there were plenty of board games, chess, musical instruments and books to occupy one. We had mostly fantastic weather throughout our stay.
We worked our way through most of the recommended list of restaurants that they provided and left in our room. We were not disappointed.
There are no TV's in any of the rooms. We thought this might be a problem but instead we ended our week having relaxed properly, eaten well and forgetting what a TV actually was. I was grateful at being deprived of a TV!
Anthony and Aine, the owners, were the perfect hosts. They know the island well and were able to suggest places to visit with interesting background information.
So glad that our introduction to the Orkney Islands began at Highland Park House. We loved our stay. Thank you!

Was such a pleasure to stay at Highland Park House. Antony & Aîné are the most wonderful hosts and catered to our every need. It was such a treat to be welcomed with local whiskey and fudge, greeted every morning with a scrumptious breakfast, and every evening by a refreshed tea tray with chocolates. I highly recommend Highland Park House for a homely stay. I hope I will be able to return

Had a fantastic stay at Highland Park House. I found the hosts, Aine and Anthony, a delightful couple who had a great knowledge of what the island had to offer and nothing seemed to be a bother to them in making our stay so good. In other reviews folk have bemoaned the fact that there are no televisions in the rooms, this is made clear on the bookings. It is a good idea not to have them as it can allow you to relax properly after a day of exploration. We made great use of the music room listening to the old gramophone and playing board games.
Our room was lovely and the ensuite looked new although styled in keeping with the grand house.
Breakfasts are pre ordered and freshly prepared delicious food provided on time.
I can't think of anything negative to say about our stay. A thoroughly enjoyable week ☺️.
If I have one regret it is that we didn't say goodbye personally to them.
Wholeheartedly recommended 👌

That is a lovely review, thank you. It is interesting to note your comment about the televisions as most of our guests say the same thing. I can't help thinking that people who are dependent on a TV for filling their time are not going to appreciate what we have done with Highland Park House or the riches that Orkney in general has to offer.

We opted for the Tower Suite. Lovely large bedroom with comfortable bed and we had a good nights sleep. But the combed ceilings in the main living area made it very hot and the combed ceiling in the en suite made using the toilet for male guests difficult as you could not get close to the WC while standing. Though the shower was new it was electric and pressure was very poor. They supplied 'Robes & Slippers' but they were in our opinion not very hygienic and were well worn. They advertise good free WiFi and they gave us the password but until the last night we could not get a signal in either the Tower or music room. As they do not have a television nor radio in any public area or guest rooms of the guest house even just getting the weather forecast was difficult. They do have wonderful breakfasts though sometimes things were not served even though they had to be ordered the night before. Unfortunately they appear to be having issues with their neighbour how had turned the field beside the guest house into an unofficial 'Tip' & vehicle scrape yard and on one night decided to start moving scrap vehicles around between 10pm till 11pm. Though our host Antony did apologise for this at breakfast the following morning, getting woken by a high level forklift throwing scrap vehicles about was not a great experience and judging by the hosts comments in the morning this is an ongoing situation.

We absolutely refute the unhygienic accusation. All items used by guests are thoroughly laundered and the dressing gowns were presented in zipped up bags. The issue with the cars certainly was disturbing but this was a one off incident and has been resolved. As far as the other complaints go, the guest did not mention the lack of wifi for four nights - this is something that could easily have been fixed (like all systems it occasionally needs a tweak, but no other guests complained about it during this stay and we know exactly who this guest is, because they repeated the same review pretty much word for word on another site. As for the rest of the complaints - it's down to personal opinion and who you want to believe but raising them in a spiteful review rather than talking to us face to face suggests that he is not a big enough man to have problems with any kind of ceiling.

My partner and I stayed at the Highland Park House B n B on Kirkwall Orkney for a little last min mini break this week for two nights . What can I say ? We were greeted by The lovely Aine and took to the Tower Suite which was a fantastic magical suite up on the top floors . I have never stayed in a fantastic place like this before . It was comfortable spacious and cosy . Fabulous little personal touches and fantastic artwork and lots of lovely books around the lovely old Victorian Castle like building ! Antony and Aine made us very welcome and the breakfasts were the best we have ever had in a B n B . ! The music room was amazing I had a couple of quick tinkles on the piano and we tried one of the old gramophones out . The WiFi in rooms was perfect . Aine advised us on restaurants and takeaways and we found an Indian restaurant that they recommended to us as there favourite . All in all a fabulous stay and we will be returning as soon as possible ! Thankyou for a lovely stay in a lovely house x

Beautiful old manor house tastefully reinvigorated. Anthony and Aine are gracious hosts and their talents in the visual and performing arts are visible throughout the house. Breakfasts were tailored to the guest and consistently good. It was a great base from which to explore Orkney.

Lovely setting in a big victorian mansion. Beautifully set out inside. Very friendly and lots of really helpful suggestions both beforehand and during our stay. The breakfasts were excellent. Its just on the outskirts of Kirkwall, close to walking and airport, with great restaurants nearby.

loved staying here. just by highland park distillery, of which you had a view from the breakfast room. nice breakfast, comfy beds, friendly staff...what more could you need. really quiet at night which was heaven, and the only think you heard during the day were the ubiquitous sheep. nice place to stay.

I understand that our method of response may not be to everyone's taste, but we do not accept that we must grovel and apologise in all cases. We will not be blackmailed into meeting unreasonable demands with the threat of poor reviews and we have found through experience that it is better for all of our guests if expectations are clear on both sides. In all cases where we have responded "robustly", the guests either made demands that were unreasonable or behaved in a way that impacted on other guests' safety, comfort or service. I would add that a number of guests have actually complimented us on our responses to the very isolated examples of selfish and unfair behaviour and in some cases booked with us because of them. Some have gone further and used their own TA reviews to defend us further, which is very touching. Naturally, we take all comments (including yours) seriously and we do constantly review all aspects of our business and the way it is presented.

Glad you like the building and what we have done. We are currently open April to mid-October. Most reviews are fine, but it is usually the ones with an axe to grind who end up writing an essay and it is nearly always some form of revenge because they haven't been allowed to break rules which are there to make things work smoothly for everyone.
