Let's be honest: the outside looks like a Soviet era bunker. The inside has top quality furnishings, but largely untouched since the 1980s and pretty tatty. The corridors are dark and gloomy. It's mostly as silent as the grave, although there is some traffic noise from the main road right outside. Many of the window panes in the public areas are misted up.

But despite all this, we rather liked it, and would stay again. The traffic noise didn't bother us, and we're usually pretty sensitive to that.

The hotel has a fully wheelchair accessible room, that is - for a change - practical to use (although they need to sort out a better shower seat).

Had a great experience at The Shetland Hotel this weekend. Rooms are large, warm, furniture is quality and the bathroom was nice and clean as well. The staff were so friendly and helpful. We are both gluten intolerant, and they advised they could cater for that. We decided to order room service breakfast, and the staff member on reception helped us fill in the card, and marked it very clearly as gluten free. Breakfast was delicious both days, came bang on the time we had requested and was presented on a tray etc. Sundries were easily available from reception, including toiletries. There was a smart TV in the room as well. Easy disabled parking for us to use right beside the front door. Our one small complaint was the WiFi disconnected a lot, but the first night there was a large function so it's likely it was just a bit overloaded, as the next day was much better. On that note, you wouldn't have known there was anything on from the room, it was very quiet! Will definitely be back, for the service alone.

I had 2 nights here while spending time in Lerwick. From the outside, the hotel looked very drab and is right on the main road meaning a lot of traffic noise. No friendly face to enable a check in - instead just a line of papers and keys on a desk and an instruction how to get more towels and toilet rolls. The corridors are long and dark with fire doors that make aloud noise as they close. Inside the room, the windows were filthy but the rest of the room was clean and the bed very comfortable enough so as not to be disturbed too much by traffic.
There is very limited choice in Lerwick and the price reflects this. Very expensive for what you get.

Excellent hotel which, like others in the Shetlands, suffers from shortages of staff but is still able to maintain high standards throughout. Very helpful, friendly staff and nothing too much trouble. Our suite was comfortable with everything we required and although COVID restrictions prevented daily cleaning, unlimited clean towels, teas, milk, biscuits, bin liners, etc., etc., were always available at reception. The restaurant food was very good and so we dined in house each night for our ten night stay. I had some laundry done on a weekend which was back in my room by the time we arrived bck in the early evening - much appreciated. The hotel is very handy for those arriving by ferry but only half an hour's drive from the airport. The town is also only about 20 mins walk away. Wonderful stay and great hiking!

A truly dreadful, dishevelled and unkempt hotel. Stuck in a 1970's time warp, in need of some serious maintenance works. All rooms face the face and with the poor fitting windows, there is much noise. Dirty windows thro-out. No bar is open, and in the restaurant, you much pay for each course and drink as you order.

We booked into here for our first stay on Shetland and were disappointed on arrival. It looks like it needs a huge amount of investment externally and internally. The bottom of the stairs area smelt of damp.

Our room was very dated and needed an overhaul, although the bathroom, was relatively modern. On mentioning to several locals where we were staying we were told they referred to it as a prison camp from its exterior!

The front desk staff were helpful and the breakfast staff were friendly and it appears there are regular return visitors but we felt it was over-priced for the condition and regrettably we wouldn't stay there again - one of the few places we have ever had to write that about.

There is a very large free car park and wifi was good but drop the price or invest in it to merit the charges.

Okay but didn't feel welcomed. It was clean enough and breakfast was okay.
The beds in the accessablev rooms were awful, so soft you felt the springs. We arrived early and asked for a cup of tea, well i paid for the tea and the 3 night booking next day, but was asked several times if we had paid for the tea, found this rather upsetting. We stayed for 3 nights and that was enough. The town folk were suoer friendly.

The decor of this hotel has seen better days, the wallpaper in the rooms needs replaced but the en-suites appear to have been recently upgraded.

The room was spacious, clean, comfy beds with 4 pillows on a double bed. Big tv with a very good range of channels. Ensuite had a bath & shower with good pressure and more than enough hot water.

The staff of the hotel were lovely, very chatty and keen to make our stay as comfortable as possible.

I didn’t eat in the hotel bar but the menu looked good. I had the cooked breakfast both mornings which was freshly made to order and of a really high standard.

We stayed two nights for business and was perfectly happy with our stay and would return.

We stated at this hotel for two nights, after visiting other islands and found it very warm and welcoming. The staff were very friendly especially the two young people at breakfast time and the room was very comfortable overlooking the harbour. Beautiful artwork in the restaurant.
