Glen Orchy House is a pleasant three star hotel located less than ten minutes’ walk from Lerwick town centre. It has excellent parking – particularly given its central position – accessed via Hjaltland Place at the back of the building. The rooms are comfortable and very clean. The WiFi is good and accessed very simply, as should be the case with all hotels. The breakfasts are outstanding, including everything from a good range of fruit to an expertly cooked full Scottish.

However, it’s worth setting your expectations that service can be haphazard. For example, when we turned up there was no one to check us in, even though they were fully aware of our expected arrival time. Eventually one of our party, who had arrived a few days before us, was able to do the checkin for us and issue our keys: a rather bizarre situation. There were several other examples of similar issues over our stay.

The hotel owner is fully aware of these issues and hopefully over time will resolve them. Providing you set your expectations I’d recommend Glen Orchy as a good place to stay while you’re in Shetland.

There were good points about Glen Orchy but I will start with the negative. The hotel is dated but I am not concerned about decor. What the proprietors should be addressing is the little touches which make a hotel feel comfortable. Firstly, the bedding is worn and very basic quality, polycotton, bobbly pillowcases, a valence instead of a bottom sheet, which wouldn’t tuck in so the bed got very wrinkled overnight; toiletries consisted of the very cheapest large dispenser over the bath, whereas individual bottles of good quality products wouldn’t cost a great deal and would add a touch of luxury. The shower over the bath was difficult to get to work until I asked for help from the receptionist. A small instruction note would have helped! The bathroom was lined with plastic boarding rather than tiling which made it seem dingy and not very clean. The bath mat appeared to be dirty. The tea and coffee in the room was of the most basic quality, and no biscuits. At least the mug was a decent size and not one of those minute tea cups often found in hotels.
On the positive side, staff were friendly and efficient and the breakfast excellent quality, particularly the range of fresh fruit. Like most hotels I have stayed at, the coffee was, in my view, undrinkable, so I advise sticking to the tea.
It was useful to be able to deposit my suitcase in the morning of my arrival on the ferry, though it is a long walk up a very steep and windy hill to the hotel.

I was greeted by a very helpful and friendly member of staff, who explained in detail all I needed to know regarding my stay. My room was basic and dated, with an uncomfortable bed. I'm not sure when the bedding was last renewed. There was no hair dryer. The bins were emptied daily but tea/coffee facilities were never replenished. I found a cut toe nail on the floor. The shower was ancient and very temperamental. If I got the temperature right somebody else in the building used their shower and mine went cold, or off completely. Breakfast was served between 6.30 - 8.30 which I felt was a bit early when you are on your holidays. Service was slow and the chef spoke little English. The selection of hot food was good, as was the cold. The only downside was some food stuffs were not covered and were tired looking by day four. They do not cater for anyone with an allergy, which is poor in this day and age. Today I only received one slice of toast as Tesco had run out, apparently. This was quite expensive and therefore I did not feel it was value for money. If my husband had been with me I'm sure he would have asked for another room. There was ample parking and a good situation, handy for the town.

My colleagues and I stayed here for a week and were blown away by how friendly, accommodating and thoughtful the staff and owners were. They bent over backwards to help us - providing packed lunches, meals at special times of day, extra storage rooms and much more. The location is great, a short walk from the harbour, shops and good restaurants. The breakfasts were delicious and generous. Highly recommend for tourists & business travellers.

Having booked over 6 months ago, and having received confirmation, we took the precaution of contacting them 14 days before our stay. The had no trace of our booking!
On arrival, we were allocated room 10 and after having dragged our luggage up to second floor, found the room but we had the wrong key. Also, room was a twin and we had booked a double.
Back all the way down to reception, to find we should be in room 22. This was also on the second floor at the other end of building. Another drag of luggage up two floors.
Room very dated and in need of a lot of tlc. Door lock very temperemental. Toilet very very slow to flush, and other plumbing dodgy.
Ate in on first night which was a mediocure experience. Thankfully we did not order from the Thai option. The gentleman next to us, did so and it arrived by taxi 50 minutes later.
Breakfast was reasonable, but of four cereal containers, three appeared to have the same contents.
Altogether a disappointing stay and it appears that the owners, whover they currently are, have not learnt from previous guests comments.
Except for staff wearing face masks, there were no other Covid 19 precautions in place, and all dining room tables were fully laid all the time, which was totally opposite from our experience in other hotels at this time.

Response from Glen Orchy, Owner at Glen Orchy Guest House
Responded 18 Sept 2020
Hello Christopher, i am so,so sorry to read of your terrible time with us. It's upsetting to say the least. It was lovely to meet you and your wife, may i add. On arrival, we soon found out the confusion with the rooms. Twin to Double issue. I quicky corrected this, on finding out myself and put you into a double room, as you'd requested. As you know yourself Christopher, as i also helped you and your wife up the stairs to both rooms, with your luggage. I did everything in my power to sort everything for you at that time. I highly suggest letting Booking.com know of your feelings on this matter please and the booking issues .As this booking was made by yourselves with them. They also take a booking fee for the reservation. It also may help this problem, from not happening again in the future. Your dinner issue was not relayed to me personally, either, at the time, so that it could be rectified either. Which i am quite disappointed in to be honest and think very unfair. I cannot fix a problem, when unaware of it. However, i do feel strongly that bringing in a complaint via someone else into this, that didn't actually complain, is a little too far in my opinion. The x4 cereal container's all have different cereals in them, all the time. A plumber has been contacted. We are awaiting said plumber to rectify all problems mentioned. Again that was never discussed in person, so you could be told about this either. Posters at front door and reception regarding covid 19, were displayed openly. Masks and hand gels also openly provided/displayed, as was the track and trace information also. I cannot express enough how disappointing this is to read. To also have other's read, that have also never been here. I thank you for your opinions and your views, but, a little more interaction with me, may have helped to have eased the situation a little, i think. Diane. (Manager)

Travelled to Lerwick for one night on business. Arrived late and staff had waited to check me in. Offered to order me a takeaway as most places closed due to Covid. First room was spotless but a little cold and when I raised this I was moved immediately to a lovely warm room. Breakfast was amazing with lots of choice and the owner insisted I take fruit and a yoghurt with me for the day. I was also offered the option of leaving my bag while I attended my business meeting for collection later. Staff organised my taxi to and from the airport too. I’d go back just to be looked after and pampered a bit more. Thank you for a lovely relaxing stay and hope to see you next year with my family after Covid.

This is probably the worst place I’ve ever stayed. I arrived to be ‘greeted’ by the very grumpy and unfriendly Thai owner who really couldn’t have cared less.

The room was up numerous stairs (I had a lot of luggage) and was lack lustre, in desperate need of re-decorating and some decent furnishings. The towels were thread bare, the duvet too small for the bed, the pillows were smelly and bed linen only fit for recycling.

I couldn’t face breakfast as the breakfast room smelt musty and grubby and was in desperate need of a deep clean.

I do not recommend this establishment and couldn’t wait to leave.

Requested 5 months in advance disabled accommodation, was told 'we'll see what we can do' None, so had to climb 4 flights of unlit stairs.
Bed sheet/valance didn't fit and were torn. Thermal lined curtains full of holes.
Shower dangerous. Black mould. torn wallpaper. Intermittant hot/cold water supply.
No WiFi for 48hrs.
Rear entrance littered with cigarette butts.
Breakfast was ok.

Our flight was cancelled due to fog, Logan air managed to book us in here for the night, arrived at 10.30pm and were greeted by the host (a Thai woman), we asked if there was any chance of food-expecting a sandwich and the host replied that she would deliver 2 chicken satays and 2 beers to the room. She absolutely went above and beyond for us and we were truly grateful.
Comfortable bed and decent shower in the room. We had to leave again at 6am so we never got to try the breakfast.
Would 100% stay here in future.

They were very friendly people; Brad and Sean were very considerate and helpful hosts, it was like staying with friends rather than at a hotel. Th room was quiet and comfortable.
I was able to store some food in a small fridge as I was an offshore worker so keeping sandwich meats and salad fixings available was a consideration.
