We stayed 2 nights in the grand hotel, arrived to an empty reception and had to go calling around the place before Harvey the owner was tracked down.
He offered to keep our luggage locked away for us as the rooms weren’t ready at that time.
We had a double room at the back of the hotel which was more than adequate with a fairly comfortable double bed, clean sheets and clean room.
The en-suite was clean and we had 2 soft clean towels each. The shower over the bath was really good and there was always hot water.
The bedroom was a bit dark due to the small windows and heavy dark curtains. The interior of the hotel is very dated and in need of refurbishment.
The service at breakfast was quite slow, the waitresses were pleasant. There were long waits between dishes but the view from the breakfast table in the window was lovely and we were holidaying so the time didn’t really matter. The choice of breakfast cereals was good but no yoghurt or fresh fruit to complement the granola or muesli.
The full cooked breakfast was huge and well cooked. Fresh juices were available, I enjoyed the pink grapefruit. There was an extensive range of cooked food on offer and everything we had was tasty.
Harvey and his family own and run the hotel are working hard and are lovely, they have recently taken on the hotel and have a lot to do to keep it going. I wish them all the best and hope to return in the future.
The location of the hotel in Lerwick is excellent being right in the centre on Commercial street and views from the rooms on the front are all to the harbour and Bressay Sound.

I arrived pre check-in time but Harvey went out of his way to help. My room was being C19 sanitised, he made me a pot of tea which was served in a dining room overlooking the harbour. He also extended check-out time as my ferry left at 5.00pm. Comfortable, central, economical & old-style Grand.

The hotel is located on the main shopping street of Lerwick, and it looked very grand from the outside on the street with a turret on one corner of the structure. Walking up the stairs to the reception, as there is no elevator in this building, that impression of grandeur continued with high pile carpets and decorative doors until we arrived outside the bedroom. The reception was not manned and there was hardly any staffs to be found. So, we waited a little while before being acknowledged by a young housekeeping staff, who went to get the owner (Harvey) to get us checked into our rooms. He was helpful in carrying the baggages up the flight of stairs. The room was fairly basic and could benefit from some repair as in some places, the wallpaper and paint were peeling off. The bed is fairly comfortable, and the duvet was of sufficient tog to keep warm. However, the slightly short curtains meant light enters the room very early in the morning. The water pressure and temperature from the shower was reasonable. Although a shaver point was available but it wasn't working. This hotel has a bar as well, which was on the floor below the bedroom, but we didn't notice any noise. However, the bedroom window overlooks the high street below, therefore expect some noise. This hotel advertises that it has a restaurant, but it doesn’t serve evening meals, only for breakfast! However, there is no shortage of food establishment of various cuisine in the vicinity. We met Mickey the chef every morning who cooked and served our breakfast very promptly. He was probably the friendliest staff on site. He was the only in-house person that we saw the most during our stay. Nothing seemed to be of too much bother for him. He introduced himself on the first morning and from then onwards, he had short chats with us every morning and kept making sure all was well. He made sure the yoghurts, cereals and various juices were available for the guests who wish to have a continental breakfast. If driving to the hotel, there is a free public car park at the back of the hotel and can enter via an entrance there, which leads directly to the reception level.

The Grand in Lerwick was a truly appalling experience. After phoning the Lerwick Visit Scotland Office and being given the contact for this hotel, along with paying £240 a night, there is a certain expectation. We were led up multiple stairs, along dark dank corridors that smelt of damp to be presented with something akin to a Victorian prison cell. The owner must have seen the look on our faces and told us he would change us to a better room as soon as possible. We are still waiting on that better room.
The room smelt damp and moldy and on inspection the net curtains were covered in black mold. We went to place our suitcase in the wardrobe but green mold was throughout the space.
The carpet and bed felt damp, the wallpaper was peeling at every edge and the room was just truly horrible.
There was nowhere else available or we would have walked out immediately. The room hadn't been hoovered before we went into it and on moving the bedside table to find a plug socket, it looked like it had never been hoovered in there in years. The carpet below was rotten and soaking wet and the floor underneath rotten.
The place is an absolute health hazard and I have no idea how it is still open
To be honest, this hotel is an embarrassment to Shetland. It ruined our trip and we wouldn't consider going back. There is no way Visit Scotland should be putting any traveller to this hotel.
It was a complete rip off, compounded by the fact that when we flew back to the mainland, we stayed in a spotlessly clean hotel in Nairn for £100 per night and it was just beautiful.

Harvey is probably the hardest working man in the business - he's pulled in all directions and seems to do all the jobs himself - the shortage of staff was quite obvious and breakfast was a bit "Fawlty Towers" at times. It was also huge! I don't think I've ever seen so many cereals, so any fruit juices and the cooked breakfast would have easily fed a family of four!!

The rooms are in need of refurbishment, but they are clean, quiet and comfortable. We stayed for 3 nights - the bar felt very safe, with table service and social distancing in place. I do think it was very expensive, but it is very central and Lerwick seems to be quite costly.

The hotel is run down, tired and simply not clean enough for an hotel. The new owner is trying his best but it’s a huge old place. He’s full of ideas, explanations and apologies but, having paid £150 per night for 3 nights, we left after 2 thus forfeiting our last £150. It was that bad.

OK OK - I've read a fair few of the rather scornful reviews of this hotel on here and, bar one or two, they are largely unfair. Yes, the place is more than a bit frayed at the edges. Yes, the carpets are sticky and stale. Yes, the wallpaper is hanging off the walls. Yes, the window frames are withering to the harsh elements. Yes, there are no lifts and yes, the mouldings are brown due to decades of grime and smokers haze. BUT... I liked it! The room was functionally clean and everything worked, even if the shower was a bit of a dribble. The breakfast was excellent and the staff were truly lovely, friendly and chatty - ALL OF THEM. The owner, Harvey, bought the place during COVID and is trying to do it up as well as the nearby Queens Hotel at the same time. Trying to get trades people in the UK is tough at the best of times and in this remote outpost it's even harder. Due to an enormous wind farm project, accommodation is hard to find in Lerwick and prices are generally very high, but don't kick this one into touch just because it's a bit faded. I hope that Harvey has extremely deep pockets as he tries to address the main fabric of both hotels first before he can seriously deal with the internal decor. In the meantime, we should be patient and support a business that is trying hard to restore the grandeur at The Grand. P.S. If you can't find anyone at the reception desk - someone will willingly help you at the bar. And if you want an idea of how costly this part of the world is, try buying a large fish supper or getting a taxi from the airport.

I was put to this hotel after my flight was cancelled. My single room was clean and comfortable, and the breakfast was excellent. As my rebooked flight was late in the day, the owner let me keep the room for as long as I wanted. The hotel does have a very “grand”interior and has a very nice feel to it. Taxis can drop you off at the front door and a free public car park is just outside the back door.

I stayed here for 6 weeks whilst working in Lerwick. The new owners provide a wonderful service, working extremely hard to cover staff shortages, (This is common on Shetland all the hotels have a problem). Breakfast was great , my single room cosy and clean. There is a bar but no evening restaurant but as the hotel is centrally situated there are several eateries within 5 minutes walk. There is a large free car park to the rear. All in all highly recommended

This is a difficult review to write. The vision and ambition of the owner in wanting to rescue a once handsome building is to be admired. However, whether it should be open to paying guests whilst this is going on is questionable. We were shocked at the shabbiness of the interior when we arrived and daunted by the three flights of stairs we had to climb to our room. There is no lift. On arrival, we had to wait some time as the owner could not be found. Our room was very dated and tired. The shower was a mere dribble. There are some positives. The room was warm and the sheets and the bathroom were clean. The breakfasts are enormous and hearty. There are no other meals available. The staff members are friendly but very scruffily dressed. There is so much potential for this hotel and Shetland as a whole but they are suffering, like many other places, from a severe lack of labour. We wish the Grand Hotel owners all the luck but we would not stay again.
