At first look the hotel is a fairytale castle surrounded by stunning views unfortunately I found this to be the only selling point of the hotel. We stopped in room 28 the views were lovely but for the price of the room (220) for one night did not reflect the cleanliness of the room nor the facilities. There was dust on the skirting boards all around the room, stains on the walls and the carpet, the bathroom tiles looked like they need regrouting. I felt the furniture and the room decor didn’t match. A mini fridge would of been nice. I found the room basic to say the least.

The restaurant over sees wonderful views of the hotel grounds and beyond. I found the menu very limited there wasn’t much choice. I ordered a bottle of wine which was £26 and didn’t receive a ice bucket stand where other customers did even though I had ordered prior to them and was told they would fetch me one. I found the tables really small and struggled to fit everything on the table without knocking over. The meal itself was pleasant enough I had the chorizo to start with with a slice bread unfortunately no butter accompanied this, my husband had the pea soup for mains I had the fish and chips and my husband and the lamb my meal was satisfying, my husband was disappointed to find his lamb wasn’t served with any mint sauce which indeed made the meat quite dry. We ordered puddings and then decided to go out for some fresh air we came back to find that our table had been cleared they had poured my husbands pint (half) and my glass of wine away they did offer my husband an apology half a pint to say sorry but nothing for myself considering the cost of the bottle of the wine.

The bed was comfortable enough and the room was quiet, the water in the bathroom was a nice temperature and they offered extra soaps and toiletries on the landing if you needed more.

Breakfast was severed between 7-10am and the order had to put in the night before. You get a choice of continental and a traditional fry up and tea, coffee. We opted for the toast and the fry up again we didn’t get to choose which bread we wanted which was a disappointment. The fry up itself I found to a bit basic, to say it was meant to be traditional I felt they ruined it and tried making pretensions.

I liked the fact that dogs were welcome in the hotel, the staff were friendly, and the fact you can eat your meals in the bar if you wish where a fireplace is situated.
From my personal experience I won’t visit again.

Whilst the spa was very nice we had booked to have afternoon tea also. This was a birthday present to my sister. When the booking was initially made a gluten free afternoon tea was requested, we also double checked with the spa staff and also informed the reception when we arrived into the hotel for the afternoon tea. 10minutes later we were told a gluten free tea hadn’t been prepared so there would be a delay. 20minutes later the afternoon tea was brought out and the normal afternoon tea had an uncooked scone with it. Cutting the scone in half revealed a glutenous stringy middle. This was taken away by hotel staff and another scone was served only to find the same thing - uncooked! We were then apologised to again and told that staff were going to the local bakery to get some scones for us!! At this point we asked for a refund, lord knows how the chef manages an al a carte if he can’t make scones

Location and room was lovely, beds comfy, staff friendly and tentative. The food was lovely served at breakfast and also in the restaurant.

As we were staying for our honeymoon we booked 2 nights and booked a superior room. It says on the description that rooms are soundproofed…..they are not, as we could hear the people next door showering and using the toilet. Also we were woken at 3am both mornings with, what we can only think, was the heating kicking in as it was constant stream of regular banging that happened every 20 seconds that continued for hours.

During check-in we were told our room would not be serviced or get fresh towels unless we requested it; my thought is that we paid exactly the same rate for both nights why wouldn’t the room be automatically serviced etc?! we were left a carrier bag outside our door with a few extra coffee, tea, milk sachets! Surely paying for a superior room should come with some luxury! We not expecting a full clean of the room just fresh towels and maybe a wipe around the bathroom etc. The superior room was located above the main door so again we got the sounds of the main door opening and closing and other customers coming and going, again to quote soundproofed rooms is very inaccurate.

We had originally contacted the spa to book in prior to our stay however they emailed to say they were fully booked for August. Whilst away we both fancied a swim/jacuzzi so we thought we’d ring the spa and check any cancellations, only to find out they were closed both Monday and Tuesday, this was not what we were told and when mentioning this to the receptionist she didn’t know what to respond! Therefore advertising as a hotel and spa is inaccurate……another service not available! We rang the Grange Hotel just down the road who welcomed us to use there pool, sauna, steam and jacuzzi for just a £10 charge.

Our second morning breakfast; we waited for 30 mins for our breakfast to arrive, staff did apologize for the delay, however as we were eating they cleared all the breakfast buffet away, even though there were still plenty of diners in. Luckily our breakfast slot was 9.30 but those with a time slot of 9.50 had to be quick!

We had a lovely time, but not superior for the money we paid!

Many thanks for taking the time to post your review. Unfortunately due to Covid regulations we are still not servicing bedrooms unless requested or for stays of 3 nights or more. This is to ensure the safety of both staff and guests, but we are happy to service on request on check in. Unfortunately we have had some team members isolating which means we have had to close the spa temporarily on a Monday and Tuesday. We are hopeful normal times will resume from October. We hope we can welcome you back in the future, Kind Regards Rachael

Booked here on recommendation and because if where it is. Paid in my opinion , a lot of money for one nights stay in a hotel but as a wedding anniversary treat thought it would be worth it

Beautiful building with great views and that is the best I can say

Room was average in what was supposed to be a deluxe room, a drab double bed in a room with a cheap kettle sat on a wobbly radiator cover and milk cartons and coffee sachets. When you turned on the shower it sounded like a cement mixer and the free WiFi was non existent

The evening meal and breakfast were average

Not what you expect for £248 for one night

Needless to say we won’t be returning

Services: Spa and gym is currently closed, this has a big impact as you’re paying for something which cannot be used.

Room: If you’ve booked a room with a ‘garden view’ do be weary, the view we had was of a generator, storage for supplies and all the towels in cages ready to be cleaned.

Each night you had to choose as to whether you wanted the room to be boiling (closed window) or the noise of a generator which sounded like a double decker bus parking outside your room all night (open window).

The shower water pressure is so poor, a shower takes twice as long and you can’t even tell if you’ve rinsed shampoo off.

Breakfast: really yummy, can’t fault it.

Restaurant/ evening meal: fantastic food, small menu (post Covid this was expected) but on the occasion we visited they had forgotten our dessert and was waiting a while. Apologies were given though.

Overall wouldn’t stay here again for the experience we had.

Not good value for money
Evening meals poor and over priced.
Chips looked triple cooked from 3 nights prior.
Beef was dry with no flavour in sauce.

Breakfast satisfactory
Staff nice and friendly
Location and views nice

Bedroom was dull and in desperate need of refurb, bathroom needed re grouting and update
Toilet seat broken
At just under £200 per night this is unacceptable
All in all over priced and have stayed at far nicer places for a lot less but these guys think that location can replace all of this
Unfortunately it doesn’t.

We had to wait till just after 3pm to access our room, I.e. no flexibility whatsoever although I’m sure the room was ready.. We took our luggage to the lift but the lift didn’t work so had to carry them up the long flight of stairs. The room was sweltering, tried to open the windows but they were so old they were stuck. I asked for a fan which to be honest they did bring up straight away.

We rang reception and asked about times the spa was open, only to be told it was closed. They said it was due to government guidelines which we can understand but why didn’t they tell us before we arrived as it was supposed to be a spa break, and what else were we getting for our £175 per night.

We were going to book dinner in the restaurant but was told it was closed on a Sunday evening. WHY again hadn’t they informed us before we arrived? We had great difficulty in finding anywhere to eat because of the new Eat Out Help Out scheme and everywhere was booked up. We ended up having fish and chips from the takeaway in Grange which was very good, but when you’re expecting a nice meal in a restaurant it was very disappointing.

With regards to breakfast, we had to say what time we would be coming down for it in the morning and choose between continental or full English, in other words we had to pre-order. There was nothing else, no cereals, fruit or anything and the cooked breakfast was very poor, we’ve had better in an all day breakfast establishment. Think we arrived five minutes early for breakfast and the manager looked put out.

Whilst at reception another guest was complaining that her toilet wouldn’t flush. The girl on reception was not at all sympathetic and told the guest you have to press it hard as the toilet is very old. The guest had to insist that someone took a look at it as she had tried six times to flush it. What kind of customer service is that?

Overall we were very disappointed with the hotel and when checking out I mentioned to the receptionist that they could have told us that the spa was closed and also the restaurant was closed on a Sunday evening. She just said it was due to the government.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

So I booked 2 nights for me an my partner with a spa package as we needed a break and a pamper, the hotel is on beautiful grounds, yes it’s dated but isn’t that the whole point why would you want to change such a beautiful building, rooms were fairly modern and we had a fantastic view. Restaurant was quite dark and only had 2 small lights for the whole restaurant, food was lovely but not very warm.

The spa- well we arrived and was stood there for a few mins as no one was there I had to go in the back to get someone’s attention I could hear. A lovely girl shown us around and let us get changed. There was no nice spa music playing which is very strange for a spa, we asked the girl if she could put some on she said she will just charge the speaker, 3 hours later still love music or to tell us the speaker was not charged. My partner also ordered a coffee which never came and we was the only people in there! I went out 45mins later to cancel the coffee and she forgot about it. The jacuzzi was dangerously in its 40c that it was too hot to get in it went down to 39.5 but was still too hot that it made me dizzy and did not get to the temperature it was supposed to be while we were there. The sauna is not warm at all either I’m not sure if it’s because it was early but we really couldn’t enjoy much of the spa apart from lying on the loungers.
We had a 30min back massage each, My partner said his was ok but mine wasn’t great all the movements were all extremely fast and my shoulders did not get massaged at all apart from a light tickling with finger tips. She did get a couple of knots out which was great but I asked for a relaxing massaging with should be long slow movements. The music that was playing in the treatment room was the strangest music I have ever heard for a spa it was like old country folk music with a man singing all the way through quite loudly even my partner said how strange it was!

I was supposed to be visiting again in March with my mother I’m just unsure wether I am now or if we do go to the spa I just hope it is much better that the last time.

The hotel is beautiful though and there was no faults with this.

We arrived at the Netherwood at 3pm which is check in time , unfortunately our room was not ready, other guests also had to wait. Service was slow and we had to try and find someone to take our our order for coffees. No sandwiches ,cakes, afternoon teas are offered and we were told to go to a shop for supplies. We were staying in the Rock house which is situated in the grounds of the hotel but we had to drive to park near this block of 4 rooms. There are no signs to allocated parking or rooms so its a bit confusing if you haven't stayed before. Spa was closed this wasn't explained when booking over the phone although the spa is chargeable..Decided to book in the restaurant. My meal was a vegan option which was very poor! and had to been returned. No table check and service again was terrible. Our room which was number 39. was compact there was mould on the bathroom tiles and shower screen leaked so we asked to be moved. Kindly reception moved us without any problems and we were grateful. On check out we had been over charged and it took a long time to rectify this we were kept waiting it was all very unprofessional. This is a very beautiful hotel in a stunning location but I'm afraid under new management it is all a bit faulty towers! Netherwood offered us a part refund although I had to chase for confirmation. I just would not recommend at this time too many other great hotels locally offering better value and service.

We were looking for hotels that did Contract Bridge holidays and we found this one by doing a google search. We were particularly attracted to Netherwood Hotel as it looks like a lovely hotel, with a spa and gym, and the website page for the bridge holiday said that we had full use of all hotel facilities. We duly booked it, through the contact given on the website, and looked forward to our holiday.
On arriving at the hotel we were informed that there is £15 charge each for use of the spa, and we naturally queried this. The assistant manager who we dealt with at first denied that the website said we had full use of the facilities until we showed it to her. She then said that it was out of date and that it didn't specifically mention the spa (it did mention a pool which they haven't had for two and a half years - another bone of contention as we had expected to use that as well). When it was put to her that full use of all facilities should mean just that, she just dug her heels in and refused to budge. She was obstructive and totally inflexible.
As a result, we felt we had been attracted to the hotel under false pretences, and that we didn't get what was advertised. We wrote to the owning company 'Squirrel Group' but we didn't even get an acknowledgement that they had received our email. I intend to take this further under the Consumer Rights Act of 2015.
Two ladies in our group also had an issue with their keys. They found they could open each other's doors with their keys. Upon querying this with reception, they said that they would sort it out the next day. When returning the following day to reception, the lady asked the same assistant manager whether the problem had been sorted out. Instead of getting an apology and a thank you for bringing it to their attention, the manager proceeded to argue with the customer telling her she was wrong, that only one of the keys had a problem and that she had been inadvertently issued with a pass key. The manager in question is, to quote my friend who dealt with her on this occasion, 'the most obnoxious person she has ever met behind a reception desk' and I have to agree with her.
There were a few other minor issues that occurred during the holiday, none of which were dealt with well. The whole place feels like Fawlty Towers. They clearly have no idea about customer service, which is incredible considering the amount they charge for the rooms.
We won't be going back!
