I booked a 2 night stay at this hotel for me and my boyfriend before lockdown started. We paid £118.39 for a standard double room (no breakfast)

I messaged the Hotel before our stay, to enquire as to if you could reserve parking, and if there is any alternative parking nearby if their car park is full. I received a reply about a week later, advising the car park is £8.50 per day and is first come first serve. The Hotel advised of 3 alternative nearby car parks: Mill Road, South Shore Road and Quarryfield Road. I wanted to arrive at the Hotel as close to check in as possible, to ensure I could get parked. I arrived at approximately 3pm and there was plenty of space.

We received an email prior to our stay, to conduct an online check in and to pay the room charge online. (This will be to minimise face to face contact at the reception)

We arrived on Friday 7th August and departed on Sunday 9th August. Check in time was 3pm, check out time was 12pm.

The Hotel is very ‘covid secure’. There is a hand sanitiser station as soon as you walk in the entrance, and another one in front of the lift. There are screens at reception, markers on the floor, and signs in the lifts advising only 1 household can travel in the lift at a time.

There is a bar on the ground floor of the Hotel. You can take your drink outside, and sit at one of the benches, overlooking the Millennium Bridge and the river. We liked sitting outside in the evening, and watching the Bridge change colour.

The room was your average hotel room, nothing too fancy. We spent hardly any time in it, so it suited us. Rather strangely, we were only given 1 towel. I am not sure if the cleaning staff were made aware we were a couple, not a solo traveller, so I had to ask at reception for another towel. I sat down to watch TV one evening and came to realise the remote had no batteries in! Fortunately reception had a spare supply. The water pressure of the shower was on the low side. The toiletries come in refillable containers which I wish more Hotels would do, instead of tiny bottles given to every guest.

On checking out, I went to reception and advised I would like to pay for my parking. The lady I spoke to advised I didn’t need to pay, and when I drive up to the barrier, she would let me out. I am unsure if this is a discretionary decision or not, as the information we were given states parking is £8.50 per day. Either way, it was much appreciated! Thank you again.

One of the cheapest options out of the hotels, the location when I looked online seemed very central which it is - walking distance from the city centre however when you see the other hotels which are right in the middle you feel a bit let down.
Rooms are quite old fashioned, bathrooms need an upgrade, little things needed fixed we had a broken plug socket with someone else's plug stuck in it and a dirty pint glass outside our room when we arrived.
Temperature in the rooms was also really cold all the time and it wouldn't change no matter how often we changed the thermostat but the price was very reasonable for two nights.

Stayed here few times over past month, and looks like it’s going to be my home away from home over next few months all things Covid related excepted.

Rooms are spacey, try and get one over looking river, and avoid those on 1st floor, ended up on 1st floor couple times and views rubbish and rooms are cold. Might have just been poor coincidence, but rooms on upper floors much better view as I say.

Safety, sanitising, visors, masks etc all there and proper procedure in bar / restaurant being sat in safe distance fashion. Woman who runs bar really busy but manages it all really well.

Great location, 5min walk over river and 10mins up the hill and you’ve loads food places, shops etc.

Stayed in room 118. The heating was broken when we arrived so after ringing reception we were offered to swap rooms which we agreed. However after packing our things the receptionist said the problem was across the whole hotel so we decided to stay put and accepted 1 night complimentary breakfast (we were staying 2 nights but had already paid for the first morning). Also a heater placed in the room.
This would have been acceptable, however the breakfast was really basic. They charge around £12.95 per morning per person if you don’t book in advance (in advance it’s £8.95 if I remember correctly). The selection was really limited and they had ran out of bagels, crumpets and baguettes on the first morning leaving basic sliced bread. No porridge or healthy choices and no nuts/seeds which you might expect at this price. The coffee was advertised as Costa but there was no offering of anything other than basic filter coffee and UHT milk!
The sausages and bacon were also of poor quality and the bacon looks as though it had been deep fried. On the plus side the staff around the hotel were friendly but didn’t ask for our comments on checking out and just took our key cards whilst chatting with another guest.
Maybe I have high standards but breakfast is a big part of staying in a hotel for me and it didn’t deliver. No extra touches in room - no biscuits on tea tray just basic tea and coffee.

What an experience, never to be forgotten. Disasters from start to finish, no heating available, we requested a fan heater which after about ten minutes the lead/and plug were too hot to touch. The restaurant staff were obviously not supervised, brought two plates or dishes at at time, didn't know what was on the menu. For the four nights we were there, it took on average 1.5 hours from the time we arrived in the dining area until the time we had finished our meals. We requested a rubber safety mat for the bath and the recommendation was that we swopped to a wet room. Upon further inspection the wash hand basin in the room had a huge crack in it, looked like someone had tried to paint the inside of it, and there were huge water stains on the ceiling. When we returned from a trip on our third day my husband went into the bathroom to fill up the kettle, the floor had huge puddles on it, and upon looking at the ceiling there was water dripping down from the floor above. There was a notice in reception saying that there would be no room service, cleaning/emptying of bins etc. but we wanted tea/coffee/toilet rolls/clean towels we could request them. The female waiting staff had their hair tied back but not securely fastened with no head covering/nets to protect us as the general public.

Response from Customer Experience, Other at Leonardo Hotel Newcastle Quayside
Responded 8 Oct 2021
Good Morning L8062JLchristinel, Thank you very much for your recent stay with us and for leaving a review. We are truly sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the bar service and the room cleaning as well. At the time of writing, we are working with some temporary challenges around consistent staffing and supply chain issues which have come up due to the ongoing pandemic which means that on some occasions we haven't been able to meet our traditionally high standards and we do apologise that this has affected your stay. Also. for guests staying more than one night, we do not offer a standard stayover housekeeping service. Upon request we are happy to provide additional linen, towels & toiletries which will be delivered to your door the following morning. This approach supports the Laundry Association guidelines and recommendations, which in turn helps manage supply logistics & shortages. We very much hope you’ll be able to visit again soon once normality has returned and experience what our property can offer unencumbered by international events. Kind Regards, Melisa Customer Experience Team

Rude and unhelpful man on reception when checking in.
Room was basic but clean, Shower took 10 mins to heat up
Huge gap under the door with the hall lights on all night
Paid for breakfast and there was a bag with 4 things left outside my door…. Did not state this on the booking and was £10 extra for breakfast… was offered a £6 refund for breakfast.
Parking £8.50 for guests per day! Not exactly in a hot spot area for people wanting to park so free parking shouldn’t be an issue
Stay in hotels in north east every week, won’t be coming back to this one

I stayed here with a group and got little sleep because of the noise from the ventilation shaft being next to my room. It was as if the bathroom fan was going all night long. Apparently if you have a walk in shower room, there are not many of them, most have showers over the bath, you have to put up with that noise day and night. There were no grab rails in the showers and no slip mats to put in there either so making us feel very unsteady, and no shelf to put your own face clothes, sponges etc. The complimentary toiletries were 2 pump action dispensers attached to the wall, not even a shower cap as most hotels provide. Rooms were not serviced all week, the reason "Covid" but probably more to do with shortage of staff. I've been to London and Wales this year and rooms were serviced every day. Duvets were hard and heavy and one was torn and double bed sheet had a large dirty mark on it. There were no drawers to put clothes away only an open hanging rail and shelf above. The best thing in the room was the river view.
The staff they had were friendly and the dining room staff worked very hard. The food was fine at breakfast but the evening meals were dire at times. Burnt roast potatoes and parsnip and the chicken was more like an old boiler hen, very tough and we could have been better with steak knives than the knives provided.

Dear Guest Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at the hotel. I am disappointed to see you were unhappy with certain areas during your stay. I can assure you that our guest feedback is very important to the operation of our hotel and affords us the opportunity of reviewing and improving the hotel’s facilities and customer service. The reasoning behind not servicing the rooms is to be more Eco Friendly and to combat the effect on the environment as was explained on the leaflet present in the room. Please accept my sincerest apologies and I can assure you we will take your comments on board in order to improve our guest experience Yours sincerely Janis Kyle Front Office Manager

Get there early or parking is on the street, and your vehicle has to be removed prior to 8.00am or bother with parking attendants. Car park holds 30 cars at best! Good position on the edge of town. Comfortable beds. The food is highly recommended - try Pizza Con Carne, fresh and tasty!

Just returned home after a nights stay to celebrate our anniversary.
we had an executive room with a huge bed and nice size bathroom with excellent power shower. room overlooked the river which was a nice touch.
Reception were very helpful on arrival and we enjoyed our little breakfast bags that were left outside our room this morning. Would definitely stay here again.

Me and my partner stayed here for a get away, very disappointed to say the least and was a superior room! Cleaners in the corridors upstairs shouting and using bad language in front of guests, the room was very dated and scruffy. There was a burn on the bath tub, the bathroom mirror was rusty and there was a hole in the desk which was covered by a brochure on arrival. Broken toilet, wonky plug socket and messy floor. Orange juice drink option for breakfast wasnt fresh, had been watered down too. I'm not a fussy person but when you pay decent money to stay in a good hotel that's what is expected. Wont be returning here very disappointed.
