Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We booked a 4 night stay at the Coal Store, which is a former foresters accommodation in the Forest of Dean.

As others have said, it is quirky, with foliage effect decor and a large stone floor bathroom area.

The manager, Jon, is a lively chap and was very helpful getting us checked in etc.

Disappointed though that there were absolutely nothing available, no evening meal, no drinks ( alcoholic or soft ) no breakfast, no pizza, nothing.

So we had to fend for ourselves, although there was tea and coffee in the room.

We were disappointed to note that there was no door between the bedroom area and the toilet/ bathroom, so no privacy, basically.

For this reason, after 2 days we upgraded to the refuge, which is a more of a self contained cabin to the side of the main building, this had a small self catering kitchen area with microwave and oven, fridge, ( which wasn’t clean ) and crucially, a bathroom door.

It also had a log burner, which was crucial as there were large gaps under both external doors.

There was also, allegedly, underfloor heating in the kitchen and bathroom, also though there were no instructions and it didn’t seem to work at all.

More alarmingly, the dining table was made from the old front door of the building, and there were sharp screws sticking out of it which would have caused a nasty injury.

Notwithstanding the above, the beds were comfy, it was certainly relaxing, and the manager was very pleasant.

With a bit more attention to detail, safety and cleanliness, it could be great, but at £150 per night for the cabin, it really should be better at that price point.

Would certainly go back if they improved on the crucial areas, and actually provided food and drink.

After fighting a storm to get to the property the warm lights were a welcome sight , the property is quirky and fascinating , with a welcoming and cozy feeling . We stayed in the Coal Store .. and the only way to describe it is , amazing ! The decor of bringing the outside in and the natural charm of the 200 year old barn make the room an absolute delight and pleasure to stay in . No matter how many time you look around the room always something new and intriguing to see . Lots of natural wood through the room makes you feel at home . The Hosts were lovely and very attentive and helpful , the amenities were spot on and the breakfast was delicious 10/10 will definitely be returning .

Had a brilliant stay here. The Lodge was everything we were expecting and more. We stayed in the Coal Store which was a quirky room with ‘living walls’ and a beautiful bathroom. John was great- contacted us on the day of arrival to give clear directions and was very helpful when recommending places to eat nearby. Would definitely return.

We were in the shed room, it was comfortable and beautifully clean. The Lodge rooms are set in a very peaceful and quiet area in the Forest of Dean, we were made so very welcome by the owners who put everything into this wonderful set up. we were greeted by two wonderful dogs at the gate, Helen met us and showed us around.
What a wonderful place

My husband and I stayed here as a belated anniversary trip. We stayed in the coal store and what an amazing room! The bathroom was like nothing we have ever seen and the bath was so unique I had to add in “have a bath” to our itinerary!
The owners could not do enough they were so lovely and the buffet breakfast was a lovely surprise that we hadn’t realised was included!
I have never felt the need to write a review before but I felt like this place and the owners fully deserved the time and effort to write this one!

Had a lovely stay in The Lodge Rooms last weekend. Place is hidden away down a bumpy forest track so not your normal. Decor in the room also unusual and quirky but very cosy. We were greeted by fabulous smiley hosts who couldn’t have been more accommodating and got a free buffet breakfast too (which was a lovely surprise and I dont know why its not mentioned on the website) Spent our time doing amazing forest walks which were right on our doorstep. We will definitely be going back again soon!

Came for a birthday getaway treat for two nights, stayed in the coal room , what a delight! From the comfortable double bed to the quirky bathroom might I add a superb double bath aswell as a shower. On arrival the lovely Helen showed us around and gave some advice on were to eat out.... again the owners were a delight! Would definitely return to try another room or even one of the domes that are situated in the gardens , some building work being done at side of property was told they are in progress of building a treehouse, looks awesome. This place is right next to paths leading into some lovely walks ( watch out for the wild boars) I was disappointed to not see any but they are there! Overall a lovely peaceful stay can't wait to return in the summer . Complimentary light breakfast available also yummy scrambled eggs 🥚

We stayed a few nights here with family that were staying at the Dome Garden. Lovely place in the middle of the forest. Great wifi, nice touches with the tea/coffee and the beds were very comfy.

Would recommend booking a restaurant at one of the nicer establishments locally - luckily they had space for us this time around!

The room was clean and comfortable, with a quirky and rustic feel. The service was brilliant. The atmosphere was really friendly and the Dome garden area with yurts and hobbit house, is beautifully set out and had a really peaceful feel (I imagine it's pretty lively in the school holidays - it looks like a great place for families). The location is great. Jon couldn't have provided better service - great ideas for things to do and places to see and I had a lovely cooked breakfast each day.

We had a delightful and memorable stay at the Lodge Rooms. Such a magical setting in the middle of the forest! We stayed at the Coal Store. Loved the room and decor. Very quirky and original. The staff were so friendly and kind. The pizza night was great. Our little boy really enjoyed the outdoor space and didn’t want to leave! We have recommended it to so many of our friends. Accommodation unlike any other and memories that last a life time. It’s what we needed after 5 depressing months of lockdown. This was really uplifting!
