Situated in Hillersland near Coleford, in the stunning Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, The Rock offers three luxury contemporary-styled self-catering holiday homes each sleeping two people: Forest View Cottage is dog friendly and the two garden lodges are on the ground floor only. Set at the edge of the forest in tranquil gardens, The Rock enjoys far reaching 25-mile views across open farmland to the distant Malvern Hills. A short stroll through the forest leads to Symonds Yat known as one of the finest viewpoints in Southern England which perches over the River Wye below. This area is very popular for cycling, walking, caving, climbing and canoeing in addition to multiple tourist attractions for all ages. Further afield, the historic cities of Gloucester, Hereford, Bristol and Cardiff, historic monuments such at Tintern Abbey, Chepstow and Goodrich Castles and the quaint villages of the Cotswolds are all within easy driving distance.

I cannot praise the communication and help prior to our visit - all information was so helpful. The house has everything you need and everything has been thought of. Hosts are so friendly and my daughter loved the dogs! The house is close (10 mins) to many attractions which made it an ideal location for us - we visited Goodrich castle, the sculpture trail, Perrygrove railway Symonds Yat and had many walks in the forest over the road! The best bit - the view 😊 Such a relaxing place - we will be back

My partner and I have stayed in a few self-catering lodges across the UK and this is by far the best.

The location is right in the middle of all the attractions that the Forest of Dean has to offer. Perfect for getting to see everything.

The communication from the owners was welcoming and contained all the necessary information needed for a quick and easy arrival. Upon arrival, we were greeted and shown to our accommodation, which was everything we could have asked for.

The kitchen was a good size and contained everything we could have needed: fridge, oven, microwave, hobs, pans, kettle and cups. All we’re clean and ready to use.

The living area was nice and relaxing however with the weather being as nice as it was, we spend a lot of time sitting outside looking at the incredible valley view that we had. This was a big highlight, as opening the curtains in the morning was extremely refreshing.

The bed was really comfortable, with plenty of pillows. Every night was a good nights sleep.

The bathroom was stunning. The toilet, basin and shower cubicle were all pristine and served their purpose perfectly.

Overall, our stay at The Rock was perfect. We’ve stayed at places where the bed’s have been extremely uncomfortable, or the kitchen, while being described as a kitchen, only had a fridge and a microwave. The Rock has everything we could have needed and acted as the perfect base when visiting this beautiful area. They even sell delicious duck and chicken eggs, which we had for our breakfast.

We’ve already recommended it to friends and family and intend on visiting again. Thank you for having us.

We have just arrived home after six nights in Maple Lodge at The Rock, Hillersland.
Sally, Anthony and Beth were excellent hosts and were always attentive to our needs. They left us a wealth of tourist information such as maps, guides, walks, etc. plus binoculars to view the wildlife (we were lucky to see a White Tailed Eagle on our last day). Maple Lodge was well equipped and comfortable but what made it stand out was the scenery to be seen from the balcony, terrace and living area. It was wonderful to awake to views across miles of countryside to the distant Malverns.
There are large gardens, five friendly dogs and, in a separate field, ducks and chickens.
The lodge made a great base for exploring the Forest of Dean with Symonds Yat Rock a 30 minute walk along a well marked forest trail.
We cannot recommend this self catering accommodation enough.

A lovely clean and comfortable location. We stayed for my birthday and they had left me a card and wine which was a lovely touch. There were also biscuits and a towel for the dog along with throws for the sofas, again really lovely touches.
The accommodation is alongside an easy walking trail to Symonds Yat which we thoroughly enjoyed along with walking in the Sculpture Park and around the lake Mallards Pike. The Dog and Muffler pub nearby is lovely (dog friendly) for a meal and the Hen and Dot also nearby worth an afternoon in their sunny garden for lovely cakes and snacks.

We had such a lovely stay in this immaculate accommodation. Location near entrance to the forest was excellent and Sally, Beth and Anthony were the perfect hosts. We stayed an extra night as didn’t want to leave and Sally made this very easy for us. The views are fabulous and walking to several pubs off road makes this a perfect getaway. Thx for being so welcoming and informative. Caroline and Billy.

We chose this B&B because of all the good reviews on this site, but our experience was entirely different!
Chris was unfriendly and unwelcoming, and Lindy was cordial but detached and made several comments that made us feel unwelcome.
The rooms were awful - cold, small, very basic, with terribly cheap fixtures and fittings. We hired 2 rooms, and 1 of the rooms smelt like there was a sewage problem.
We were made to feel like they wanted us out of the way as soon as we'd eaten breakfast, and were made to feel uncomfortable when we lingered in our rooms or in the garden after finishing breakfast.
We thought the breakfasts were a joke - the tiniest portion of beans ever seen on a plate served with 1 sausage, 1 rasher of bacon - we were still hungry after eating it!
The atmosphere was stifled and we witnessed the hosts arguing over the fact that another guest wanted yogurt when they had not previously ordered it the night before.
We will not be returning and will not recommend this place!
The self catering suites look nicer than the rooms, but at the price they are charging for them you'd be better off staying in a nice hotel!

Its not very nice to read such comments as this review when its too late to correct any issues raised, especially when you put as much time and effort into trying to please people as we do. But I guess you can't please all the people all the time, its such a shame these people didn't mention any of the issues to us while here. I feel duty bound as the proud joint owner of the Rock to answer the questions raised in this review. The AA inspector and many of our guests describe our rooms as comfortable and sizable as required by a 4 star rated B&B. Our inspector advised that while our shower rooms are very good they could be improved by adding better lighting, more shelves etc, to match the high standards of the rest of the room and we plan to do this over the winter this year. Rooms Cold?- all rooms have their heating on all the time (Even over the summer) but are controlled by a thermostat this must have been turned down its a simple matter to turn it up, if we forgot to tell someone where the thermostat was, its our mistake but they only had to ask or read the room information. Poor breakfast?- I have just read our visitors Book everyone comments on our great breakfast. we always serve two rashers of bacon unless requested for one so am surprised with the comment Often people can't eat all the full cooked breakfast that we provide.Hungry after eating our breakfast?- we serve a buffet of juice, cereals, Fruit, toast which you help yourself to Jams etc. So you should be able to ensure you are full. Yogurts - I remember discussing this and actually including I think this group in the conversation, we hate letting people down and if we are advised that people want something off the menu we like to meet their needs but we need notice and that's all we were saying but obviously it did not come over as that. Smells in the room - All rooms are cleaned to a very high standard occasionally the shower drain can start to Block and although we regularly clean them as we don't use the shower we don't always notice it until a guest advises of an issue. So this must have been the case here High priced rooms- I believe these people were paying no more than £28 per night B&B which most people believe is very reasonable, our new rooms completed in June 2010 are not pure self catering rooms they are B&B but with a combination oven full fridge and sink. People who have used these rooms think they are also very reasonable and good value. But we understand that for people who don't stay away a lot in serviced or self catering accommodation it may sound a lot but we have carried our a lot of research and got advice from several sources and are sure we offer good value at £430 to £500 for a week B&B. And many people starting to use us instead of the Good local hotels. Grumpy Chris - most people are very impressed with the welcome they receive from us but when on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week without a day off in over 8 weeks I am sure it is possible to catch us on an off period perhaps we were in the middle of dinner? I can't remember, and if we appeared unwelcoming we must apologize but we are only human and quite tired at the end of a busy season. Fortunately I see another good review has just come in to cheer us up a little, I hope these people find somewhere to meet their needs on future visits and its a shame we shan't see them again as we do with many of our repeat bookings with many of these people become as much friends as guests. Chris

My Partner and I booked to stay at the Rock inn as they advertise as Dog friendly and had a Hot Tub. As many have said we were greated with smiles and shown our room. I was told the dogs were not allowed in the breakfast room or allowed to stay in the room while we had breakfast. They told me the dogs could run around in there garden while we ate ut it was cold and drizzling with rain so I had to leave them in the car. Dog friendly I dont think so.
Straight after arrival we went for a very long lovely walk and we were given maps to help us which was great.
When we got back we were pleased to see the Hot tub was available so put are swim wear on rapped in a towl and went out to use it. Lindy came out before we got in and said we had to book to use it and was told that if we had read the welcome pack I would have known that. once it was agreed it was my fault that I did not now I was told as it was empty I guess it was ok to use it but not to touch any of the controls. after 30mins even though there was nobody else around we were told our time was up. I asked if we could stay in and was told it cost alot to run.
Moving on. The outside of the Builing is looking tatty and needs a paint. The room was a reasonable size and was clean but very basic. I decided to take a look at the Rule book. Sorry welcome pack and it did make us laugh.
The Breakfast was very nice.
I know this sounds silly but I think they have been watching the hotel inspector and have some nice touches but spoil them by being so in your face. This place has potential to e great ut could not relax as was made to feel like it was a problem eing there with Dogs and using the Hot tub. After the hot tub and view was used to sell the place I thought it would e ok to use it. There were four guys there who also wanted to use it and as soon as they came over we got out so they could relax for there 30 mins!!!
This couple should not run a BB as I dont think they really like people.
All that said its a great location.
M. Wiltshire

Unfortunately The Rock was a rather disappointing experience for us - surprising, given the good reviews it has garnered.
On the positive side, the views from parts of the property are really stunning, and it's right near the forest area for walking to Symonds Yat.
However, there are a number of negatives. The road to Symonds Yat runs right by the property, and during the day the traffic noise is very loud. Our Forest View room shared an adjoining wall with another room, and also an external entrance stairwell - so pray for quiet neighbouring guests!
Also, be aware that dining/food options within walking distance are extremely limited - the nearby pub is very much a chips and hamburger type joint, and it seemed you could only get there via the forest (hardly ideal at night), as there are no footpaths on a section of the road between The Rock and the pub (so very unsafe to walk along it).
Our room was small and basic. The beds were not the most comfortable, and the bathroom door did not close properly.
There is only a 45 minute window during which breakfast is served, and when we requested a slight variation from the standard menu (ie boiled eggs, tomato and mushrooms rather than the full English - we try to eat healthily) we were treated as a bit of a problem (the only time this happened to us during our 6 week holiday in England). The breakfast room/lounge was locked most of the day, and to be honest the impression was you weren't encouraged to hang around outside the 45 minute breakfast interval. We really weren't made to feel very welcome here.
During our stay we drove to Monmouth, and would recommend this attractive market town as a base for visiting the Forest of Dean instead - it's a short drive to most walks/attractions, offers a full range of services, and has numerous nice pubs and eateries.

Thanks for the feedback - As you suggest we think you just chose the wrong B&B in the Wrong Location. We’ll check our website to make sure it’s obvious we are in a rural position. Dangerous road? Currently two other roads are closed for repair so our road is busier than normal, I walked back for meeting some friends at the pub last Friday evening at 9 pm and in the 10 minutes it took 11 cars passed me, so it’s not too bad and it does have streetlights. As the road is single track further on we get no large vehicles passing through. We also have torches available for loan if guests request. Although we offer a number of healthy options for breakfast you are correct that boiled eggs are not on our menu although poached, scrambled , fried and omelets are. This is because we can not produce consistently soft or medium eggs although we happy to cook them but can’t guarantee the outcome. We will add our menu to the website and probably add a note to this effect. Rooms next door to yours? Most Hotels and B&B’s will have rooms next to each and although sound insulation is in place as always we are in the hands of our guests respecting others. Our client profile fortunately means that we rarely have serious issues with this problem. Bathroom door not closing? We checked this out and is closes and Locks, but the latch plate needed slight adjustment, we could have fixed this in less than 10 mins if you had advised us of the problem The local pubs food is enjoyed by most of our guests and has many excellent reviews, There are more fine dining places in the area, but generally around here its more pub or Gastro pub food. We do list these on our website. We are sorry you felt unwelcome during your stay we did not pick this up when we chatted to you or indeed when you checked out and we asked if everything was OK with your stay Hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in the UK

Found this accomodation (Forest Cottage ) on cottages.com , the self catering cottage is next to the owners home, there are three other studios all with amazing views.
The Forestry is across the road and an excellent walk to symmonds yacht awaits you.

The accomodation and facilities in forest cottage are first class and extremely comfortable , downstairs has a porch to store wet walking Gear and muddy boots, the kitchen is clean and modern with a recent update and good equipment, glasses, cooking utensils, saucepans, plates etc, a great easy to use cooker, dishwasher, washing machine and microwave and fridge freezer.Table in kitchen area which extends but we were 2 people so not applicable .
Huge flat screen tv...wifi is available but due to local area is patchy.
Two comfortable sofas , nice colour coordination with pictures and a huge coffee table with some local maps , walks and couple of games .
Nice touch with welcome, milk, loo rolls and biscuits, dishwasher tablets, cleaning products and handwash.
The view from the bedroom upstairs is amazing, as is the star gazing...another sofa upstairs with king size comfy bed, crisp white linen, again nice subtle colour coordination with bed linen and curtains, lots of storage and hanging space , two bedside tables, lamps .
A walk in waterfall shower, plenty of hot water, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, cotton buds, cleansing pads, large white towels and hand towels and bathroom cleaning products .

Stayed for 2 nights. Warm welcome and hospitality. Great spot if you like walking and exploring the Forest of Dean. Dogs welcomed.
Breakfast was excellent in clean surroundings. The owners went out of their way to make sure we had all we needed to get where we wanted each day.
Highly recommended. We'll stay again

Hi is the four poster room a decent size. I get a bit closterphobic.
Answer from TheRockBandB

The room is of reasonable size about 4x3 mts plus a showr room and an entrance lobby about 1x1 mt. the room has a window as does the shower room. The AA describe it as a sizable room in their inspections. Its a first floor room. Their are pictures on the web site hope this helps - actually no one in 10 years has ever said they were claustrophiobic in the room, or actually any of our rooms. Chris

Yes in either of our dog friendly rooms which are Ross or Monmouth our website give all details of rooms and bringing dog guidelines but tripadvisor won't let me give you the links here. But the link to our website is avaailable on the tripadviosr listing. This link costs £600 a year which is why most B&B's don't have the link Hope this helps
