We stayed one night in this beautiful old Manor house Hotel near Chippenham on a Travelzoo deal and were very happy with the standard of accommodation and food. Our large superior double room was well fitted out if a little cold when we first arrived. This was immediately rectified by the receptionist who turned up the heating and also arranged for a small portable heater to be delivered to our room.
The breakfast served in the morning was prepared and presented to a very high standard and our included evening meal was superb (please see separate review).
All of the above merits 5 stars however we have only awarded 4 because the telephone reservation system used by the hotel and the others in the Sleeping Bear group is, to say the least, extremely frustrating. After being presented with a choice of numbers to press for the service required and choosing reservations either the phone just rings and rings or an answer phone message tells the caller the opening hours. This happened on a number of occasions despite the fact that we were calling during opening hours!!!

This was an overnight stay with a Travel Zoo voucher. The hotel is impressive, set in lovely grounds and very easy to get to. The staff are very helpful and the service excellent. Our room was large and comfortably furnished and equipped with tea and coffee and home made flapjacks were provided and
the enormous bed was really comfortable. The ensuite bathroom was brilliant with lovely quality toiletries and huge
fluffy towels. The decor is
period with lots of antique
features. The taster menu was
exquisite and the serving staff
were very efficient and attentive
. The full English breakfast was
lovely. We had a really lovely
stay and would recommend it
for a short break. With the
voucher it was very reasonable.

So wow what is 2020 all about ?
Decided after such a difficult year so far that we should get away for a couple of days, having acquired a puppy during lockdown finding a hotel that welcomed pets was a must. I was so happy to find Stanton Manor openly welcomed dogs and even offer a dog lovers break where not only do you get bed breakfast & evening meal but you also get a bed for the pooch dog food and a dog bowl in with it, plus an upgrade to a better room when booked through their own website.
I can honestly say we were not disappointed !! The hotel was obviously quieter than normal given the current situation but it felt like we were a world away from all this talk of Covid 19,
The hotel itself is beautiful the rooms are clean and well presented (cabin rooms are a little on the small side but then how much time do you spend in your room) , we had a superior room which was spacious with a king size bed , windows on 3 sides of the room overlooking the grounds and a bathroom with a shower and a bath. Due to Covid rooms were not being cleaned during your stay but it was made clear if anything was required such as towels sheets extra coffee or tea all we needed to do was ask any it would be provided . The room is equipped with everything you need , wardrobe with hangers , hair dryer, kettle tea coffee milk and toiletries. There isn’t currently a fridge or a telephone in the rooms.
The bed was sooooo comfortable !! I just wanted to take the mattress hone with me.
Food.... breakfast is currently being delivered to your room, it’s dropped off outside the door in bags and consists of a croissant muffin alpine bar and orange juice. Not my cup of tea but you have to expect some things to be different in the current situation. Evening meals could be taken in the restaurant bar or lounge, dogs are welcome in the bar and lounge but not in the restaurant, evening meals were from a paper menu inline with government guide lines, and choices were limited but more than adequate, the food was well presented and tasted amazing, there was nothing I could fault and highly recommend the pork and the Chicken katsu curry
!! Yum !!! Desert again was limited but equally as lovely (compliments to the chief ! Life in the kitchen must be so difficult right now !)
The hotel grounds are beautiful, extremely well maintained and a lovely space to walk around especially having a dog with us.
The staff were very pleasant and nothing was to much trouble , they defiantly went above and beyond ! A big thank you to them all.
Would I stay here again most defiantly, I would highly recommend this hotel to everyone especially dog lovers.
One thing I would say if you book through the web page dog lovers weekend it does take you through to the general web page and you then need to look down the list to find the dog lovers package in order to get the upgrade and the things for the dog, this will save having to sort it out when you arrive xx
Thank you again everyone at Stanton Manor , we wish you every success it this very difficult time xx

The one thing this place has going for it are the grounds it is set in, other than that we would not stay here again. Don’t believe the photos on the website, very out of date. It could be such a nice place, it may come down to money but it should have had a major overhaul / refit, especially in lockdown (like others have done). It was our understanding that hotels were supposed to be deep cleaned, even more so in this current environment. This was not the case. Our room had a broken headboard, knobs missing from drawers, chairs stained and threadbare, the extractor fan in the bathroom had thick dust and cobwebs hanging from it(clearly hadn’t been cleaned in years), other people’s hair was stuck to the wall, .... the final straw was when we pulled the sheets back on the made up bed, they were stained ... it was at this point we asked to be moved. The second room was better, bigger, brighter but not cleaned to a high standard, food crumbs on the floor, finger marks on wardrobes, doors and walls, if we’d had a wet wipe I’m sure it would have been black after use. In the hotel there was no sign of management, people who were there were clearly trying to make do with what they had. Surfaces / banisters outside our room were sticky, cobwebs and dead flies on the window sills in the restaurant ( food was ok) although being told they had run out of menus so can you choose from the menu that was on the wall in the hallway by reception, omg. After one night, we were told they had run out of wine but could offer an alternative, the next night it happened again, each time the price just kept going up and up. What’s going on ? Finally the box breakfasts, totally understand why, although other places have been much more inventive around this ie. order in advance, stagger your sittings etc. The boxes were left outside your room every evening, the problem is, they kept only leaving one so I had to chase them for another every day. If you’re going to offer boxes maybe mix it up a bit, offer a variety..... I like a croissant, a muffin, carton of OJ, a cereal bar and an apple but not every day.

Don’t stay here until they’ve sorted themselves out, whenever that may be.

My wife and I checked out early because of a complete lack of satisfaction with our stay at Stanton Manor. Unfortunately no one was available to hear our complaints personally, only Brad was left in charge of front of house, he didn't even know how to close our account.

Prior to our arrival, we had tried 7 times over the phone to confirm a dinner reservation for our arrival evening. Every time we were told we'd receive an email and phone call to confirm our reservation. We didn't receive any such communication.

Upon arrival, we enquired about a dinner reservation, no messages had been received at the hotel, but luckily we were able to book a table for that evening in the restaurant. We also had a booking for the next day, Saturday at 10:30am for brunch in the drawing room for 4 people and a dog. This was confirmed again as it had been booked two weeks earlier.

We were allocated room 4, just above reception. The room is very tired and shabby, but we decided to make the best of it although it's nothing like the website. We had drinks in the bar, then dinner in the restaurant before retiring to our room.

There was loud music until midnight, then the sound of furniture being moved around, doors slamming etc until about 1:30am.

On Saturday morning we used the dedicated room service WhatsApp service to order 2x coffees in our room (screen shot attached). The WhatsApp was delivered but after an hour, we cancelled our order as no acknowledgement or otherwise had been received.

No shower was possible as the shower controls only allowed scalding water.

So we went down for our pre - booked brunch with our guests, only to find that the drawing room was already in use for a private party. We were told that we could eat in the bar and a table was moved to the bar to accommodate the four of us and the dog.

We placed our breakfast order 1x Eggs Royal, 2x Eggs Benedict and 1x English Breakfast. The server returned to say that there was no salmon, so the order became 3x Eggs Benedict, 1x English Breakfast. Then we were told there was no hollandaise sauce, so the order had to be changed again to 3x English Breakfast 1x Scrambled Eggs on toast. In the end we were only charged for two breakfasts by way of compensation which was a gesture at least.

We informed reception before going out for the day about the shower and were assured that something would be done before our return.

Upon returning, nothing had been done about the shower and a loud party was underway in the drawing room.

Only Brad was available to hear our complaints, he had no authority and no idea how the booking system worked so he could not cancel or refund anything for us.

The hotel is a disgrace, tired and terribly maintained. The staff are it's only saving grace, I'm guessing they are used to apologising by now as our experience must be common place.

This weekend was supposed to be a special birthday surprise for our daughter who we hadn't seen since lockdown last year and we'd travelled from Scotland to visit her, have brunch, meet her new dog. This was supossed to have been a fabulous weekend, but it's start was ruined by the Stanton Manor experience.

Thanks for leaving giving us your feedback on your recent stay I am really sorry it was not up to standard. We have only just re-opened fully and at the time were still finding our feet, we also had a few staffing issues which have now thankfully been resolved. The hotel was refurbished in 2018 where we spend just under 350k, the images on our website are correct and show the hotel as it is today I can see from your review that you did not have a good time with us and I am going to contact you directly about this as we do like to talk directly to our guest if there is an issue. Again, sorry we did not get it right on this occasion, I think a lot of what you experienced was down to re-opening teething problems and I am sorry about that.

Had a feeling the trip wasn’t going to go well when they called me just before I left to go there to tell me they had double booked our room so we had been down graded for the 3 night stay. They had done this to us on a previous booking too. They offered a meal & wine to compensate. We arrived and my mum has mobility issues, no trolleys for luggage or help and the car park is quite a way away from reception & rooms. The room was very small and my mum was unable to use her walker in the room. Room also very hot, no air con so we asked for a fan. Once unpacked we fancied a cuppa but the cups were dirty & stained. Luckily we always take our own as we like large mugs. The bathroom was ok but no air ventilation and the bath so high we had difficulty getting in to use the shower. In fact my mum couldn’t get in so had to have washes. The tiles had mould on and the grout in some places looked like blood on it. The toilet had to be pumped to flush it as it didn’t work properly & a long cobweb hanging from the ceiling. The bedside lampshade had mould on, wallpaper ripped and some paint missing on the wall in the bed area. Staff were friendly, when you could find them. In the dining areas the floor was stained and looked like it hadn’t been washed. The second 2 nights we waited 30mins for the dessert menu and in the end gave up. We went for the B&B option and due to covid it’s bought to you in a box, except ours wasn’t so I had to WhatsApp ( yes that’s how you contact reception as no phones in room ) to ask for ours. You pay for a full English but get a small croissant, muffin ( if they remember it), carton of OJ, apple & jam. If you stay for more than one night during covid they don’t clean your room until you leave. You have to ask for rubbish to be removed, loo rolls etc. So disappointed as the website made it sound amazing. Lack of staff ( one waiter at meal times ) Lack of some of the listed facilities and tired decor. We won’t be going back. When I complained they did take money off the bill but they shouldn’t have to do that if they provide the service they promise.

My daughter booked an overnight stay at Stanton Manor for me as a birthday treat. Stanton Manor is in a beautiful location with lovely grounds and ample parking. The staff were really lovely and very attentive. Our evening meal was superb and it was a lovely touch that I was given a small piece of cake with a candle along with my panacotta dessert.
The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is down to the room. We were staying in what is described as a deluxe room which is supposed to be a top room. Unfortunately the room was disappointing, tired decor, marks on the wall, stain on the bathroom floor due to leaky sink and a really high bed that was not at all comfortable. We were really looking forward to the homemade flapjack in our room but there wasn't any, neither were there any biscuits which is a fairly standard expectation. I also personally really dislike PG tips and would have preferred English breakfast tea and a selection of fruit teas.
Overall the positives definitely outweigh the negative, but there's definitely some room for improvement.

As we checked in we were reassuringly questioned about our health and before we went to our Room (5) we were informed that complimentary tea and cake was being served in the restaurant when we were ready. Unfortunately the room that we had requested (and confirmed by the hotel prior to arrival) was not the room we got. It was however quite a nice large room overlooking fields. We took advantage of the tea and cakes although there was a long wait to be offered tea! We had booked a DBB rate and although my steak arrived well done the chef corrected this by cooking another one medium for me the hotel also served us a complimentary bottle of wine for the mix up with the room. The staff at Stanton Manor are all young students and the restaurant, lounges and terrace were littered with crockery which never seemed to get cleared. On check out our bill reflected a charge for the complimentary wine and the tea & cakes! This was quickly corrected... pictures of our room and the breakfast attached.

Room didn’t look like the picture so we got moved to a “refurbished” room which had had a lick of paint and new bed linen. Bathroom in second room was in an even worse state than the first room which hadn’t been refurbished. Back of bathroom door was discoloured and shelf and sink were sloping so you couldn’t put anything on them. Both rooms were very noisy and sounded like the windows were open even though they weren’t. Could hear constant motorway traffic which isn’t what I expected for a break in the country.

Had the 4 course tasting menu and the food was good but the service was poor. Staff were very inexperienced, didn’t know what was on the menu (it was a set menu of 4 dishes!) and not visible unless they were putting food down or taking plates away.

Breakfast was a disaster. Continental breakfast buffet consisted of some bread to toast with only the option of one jam or marmalade, some tiny croissants, some slices of ham and cheese and a choice of about 3 cereals. The selection of “fresh juices” was a small jug that had been filled up with a carton of orange juice. 20 minutes after ordering our cooked breakfast we were told there were no eggs. Everything on the limited cooked menu had eggs in it so there was little in the way of substitution!! Management were nowhere to be seen during our stay and the poor waitress was left to deal with a room full of unhappy customers with no support.

Such a shame as it could be a lovely hotel but it appears to have no management or direction so almost everything needs improvement. Would not recommend.

Travelzoo offer
Stayed here on the current travelzoo offer which was excellent value for the money. It included a 3 course a la carte dinner and a cream tea.

Our superior king sized room was large and looked out over the car park - towards the motorway but no noise with the windows closed.
Furniture was a bit tired in places but in an old hotel modern would look out of place.
The large bathroom was clean with two large bath towels and bath mat (no hand towel provided) .
We were were unable to use the magnificent bath tub due to the wind whistling through the window.

The Bed was firm and comfortable.

Cream tea was 2 scones- mediocre.

Dinner was delicious but spoilt by a disagreement regarding the 3 course a la carte meal which we were expecting. The restaurant staff gave us the Residents menu and not the a la carte menu.
The Residents menu was restricted and additional charges were involved for the items we wanted. This would have involved a further £30 charge.

Eventually after a very unpleasant disagreement in front of everyone they honoured the a la carte meal that was included in the Travelzoo offer.

I have made Travelzoo aware of these issues

Breakfast was freshly cooked and excellent.

Friendly staff, very busy.

This hotel is in need of someone to manage it.
