As soon as I approached the inn I was convinced I had made an excellent choice. The building is very olde worlde, complete with thatched roof and ample parking space behind. The reception staff were very welcoming and helpful and it was obvious throughout my stay that a great deal of thought and attention had gone to the COVID-19 hygiene arrangements.

I was assigned room number two, which was a large suite. The bedroom contained an impressive fourposter bed, a fireplace and a two seater settee. All furnishings were traditional and in keeping with the very rustic design of the room. The room was split level with a dressing/sitting room being up 3 steps. There was ample storage space and a spacious bathroom led off from the dressing room. This contained a standalone shower and a large whirlpool bath. The toiletries were high branded and there were soft bathrobes and plenty of towels. The room had fully opening windows so the air could circulate and they were double glazed which eliminated traffic noise from the main road outside. The bed was extremely comfortable and I had the best sleep.

The restaurant continued the country cottage atmosphere, with nooks and crannies in abundance. Social distancing was very well maintained. Food quality was very high and portions were huge and fairly priced. The restaurant operated the government discount scheme. Breakfast was totally amazing and had some of the highest quality ingredients I have ever tasted.

This is a delightful venue and I would sincerely go out of my way to visit again.

We booked early after lockdown for five nights in September, having lost our diamond wedding anniversary cruise. James kindly upgraded us to the large suite with a four poster bed.
We serviced our room during our stay and James ensured we kept the same table for breakfast and dinner each night which minimised the risk of contacting Covid 19.
The quality of the food is excellent and the staff friendly and helpful.
We highly recommend Hoops Inn.

I visited here once about thirty years ago and I have always planned to come back. With no chance of a holiday this year, I booked us in for a couple of nights at Hoops Inn. It was a great choice. Our room was large and well appointed. If you are fussy you could say it is a little dated but I thought it was very appropriate for an old inn. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom very modern. The large jacuzzi bath with room for two (!!) was great fun. Rooms in the main building overlook a main road but we never heard any traffic throughout the night. The curtains are substantial making the room very dark so we slept really well. As with any comments I make about hotels, the staff always feature. Staff at Hoops Inn are a delight. Very pleasant and friendly, they are also well trained and chatting to them about food and drink choices shows that they know what they are doing. Evening meals were superb and accompanied by a decent wine list. Breakfast was cooked to order and substantial. This is a delightful place to stay and I hope it isn’t another thirty years before I return.

We have just spent two nights at this quaint and friendly hotel. We stayed in a Superior Room in the main thatched building. It was a very old fashioned room but with all the necessary mod cons. My only small criticism was the mattress but that is probably being picky! We used the restaurant both evenings - the food was good quality and plentiful and indeed both food and drink were good value. The Hotel is set in lovely grounds and although it faces on to the A39 it was not at all noisy. Service was also very good. This Hotel is in a good position with Clovelly being about five miles to the west and Bideford about 10 minutes to the East. Would I recommend this Hotel? Yes, I would and it was excellent value.

Stayed B&B in superior room. As you pull up it is a beautiful Olde Worlde Inn, but inside it is a mish-mash of additions and sadly lacks any atmosphere. The staff with the exception of one lady seem disinterested, just serve and no conversation. We were hoping for a nice meal and night in the bar, food choice limited and unimaginative and meals were quite oily and not cheap. Room was nice if a little tired, lovely bathroom but shower lukewarm. Robes a nice touch, but teeny toiletries, one of which was part used! Breakfast, hell where do I start, thought I'd woken up in 1970, cutlery, chinaware and menu stuck there, choices poor and unimaginative, cheap and old fashioned, the coffee was vile and the orange juice tasted like cheap longline stuff. When I'm on my hols I like to feel like an effort has been put in to make my stay special, not the feeling I got here, sadly, they could do so much better and certainly not what I would expect for the hefty price tag of £120 a night, probably time they haul themselves into the 21st century where more than small bags of wheatabix or museli are expected (unless you are staying at cheap motorway motel for £29 a night), feels like they have given up.

We checked the website and Facebook page prior to our visit and there was no mention of a reduced menu so safe to say we were disappointed to find the items we had in mind were not on offer when we got there. My main arrived wrong and both mains were taken away again but when they arrived back correct it was clear my partners meal had been left under a lamp and was cold when it arrived back. When it arrived again hot it was dry and flavourless.

Admittedly the staff were incredible and very understanding and helpful throughout and my partners meal was deducted from the menu, if it wasn’t for the brilliant waiting staff it would have been a nightmare of an evening.

Popped in for a quick drink at around 3 pm today. Ordered the Warm Salt Beef and Blue Cheese Flatbread with Pickles. Looked lovely when it arrived but the beef was visibly pink? I’ve eaten a lot of salt beef, which normally melts in my mouth, but never had it undercooked! When we tried to bite into the beef, our teeth just couldn’t puncture it to eat it. We had no alternative but to remove all the beef and ate the majority of the rest, which was very tasty. When we finally caught the waitress’s eye and called her over and told her we couldn’t eat it, I asked her if the chef ever tried food before he sent it out? She returned to the kitchen then returned and said the chef agreed with us… it was tough!! When we asked for the bill, we hadn’t been charged for the flatbread which I had no intention of paying for anyway but at no point were we offered a replacement flatbread by the waitress, which would have been nice… we won’t be back, which is a shame as the flatbread could have been even more tasty had the beef been properly cooked. Perhaps it was a cheap cut of beef as there was a lot of gristle and inedible fat. We were astounded the chef hadn’t even pre-tasted it.

Stayed here for one night had a lovely suite was huge a double spa bath was so nice and very good value for money £129.
Staff were lovely the food was incredible dinner cream tea and breakfast was so lovely.
Lovely seating outside in gardens
Best burger ever and scones were to die for.
Cons
Arrived 14.40 to be told room was still being cleaned check in was 14.00 on wards so would have expected it ready really.
No one really introduced themselves esp the manager. Be proud say who u are it's a lovely building and business.
Just be nice to no.
Waiteress had not really any idea of the menu at lunch time had to go back and ask twice.
On arrival in our room noticed the tap in the bathroom was running and wouldn't stop i reported it to the the bar staff who new about it allready and said a plumber will be out Monday would have been nice to be told that there was a problem with the tap before going up to the room to find it ourselves.
The key keyrings are very big and makes it difficult to lock and open the doors.
Maybe have a smaller one.
Shower was lush but felt it needed a bigger shower head as you have all that space in there which is lovely.
Cabinet in bathroom needs replacing the wood is coming apart and a rust water coming from towel rail.
Overall very clean and lovely feel to the place.

After visiting the restaurant last year and having an amazing experience we decided we would visit again and make this a special night .
On entering with the current circumstances we did expect to greeted and told of the measures for social distancing etc. and maybe details taken ? The usual room which is lovely was not offered to us and we were put into this little dingy back room which was not inviting at all. Also that the menu hadn’t been up dated on website as both the meals we were going to have weren’t on the limited menu, our main reason for going. When our food came you could see it had been under the warmer for a while, the chicken very dry and the fish curling on the end . I was hoping that the pudding would recover all our disappointments but that was dry and had no taste which was a chocolate peanut butter cake, something you’d expect to be full of flavour . The waitresses had no masks or shields on either . All in all it was so disappointing . We was asked if our meal was good which we replied it was only ok ? Personally I’d thought they would of asked why only ok but they didn’t . The room was that small there was no way we were going to make a fuss . Really hope they can get through these hard times but feel they really need to up their game to keep people coming back .

Response from James Stephens, Owner at Hoops Inn
Responded 26 Jul 2020
Firstly thank you for your review. When you arrived and were sat on your table your details were taken again along with the information we store along with your booking where we state your time of arrival and all contact details. You have mentioned social distancing, we have set all of our tables at a minimum 2 metre distance and we our lucky that we have many rooms nooks and crannies that enable us to have single tables within their own room to maintain distancing and safety of our customers which is paramount at these times. During the serving of all drinks and meals we have table service only and everything is put onto trays and taken to the end of your table so as to go above what is required. This was once again explained to you. We also have a sign on the entrance door and throughout the building of what measures are in place which is strange that you didn't manage to see these? We are very sorry that the menu is currently being changed weekly but that is due to everything that has and still is going on with a major problem being our suppliers as well. If you had mentioned that you were not entirely happy with your meals during the check backs your received or at the end of your meal we would have done everything possible to rectify this. It is just unfortunate that you haven't given us the opportunity to do so but have mentioned it on here first. We do hope that you will give us another opportunity to make your experience better and join the thousands of people that have received a great experience here since are reopening. Kind regards The Hoops Inn team

what more can one say apart from first class. we had driven 5 hours and on entering the Hoops Inn we had a lovely warm welcome and booking in was seamless. Our room, No 5 we would recommend, it was cosy, warm, spotless and roomy as was the bathroom. Everywhere was very clean.

We ate 3 evening meals at Hoops and had 3 breakfasts, the staff were so friendly and accommodating. for us the food was excellent, the chef did a great job.

great value for money

well done to everyone and thank you. We will be back.

Peter & Gina.
