A brilliant location for those who like walking, but also for those who want to travel further a field. Lots to do in Barnard Castle and equally within easy access of lots of other places of interest. Without exception, every member of staff made you feel very welcome. The rooms are as described and very clean and comfortable. We had a room overlooking the lovely courtyard and were a bit worried about the soft music but without fail, every evening the music stopped at 10pm as promised. What was very clear was that this hotel is well used by the locals, always a very good indication. We had breakfast on each morning and dinner on two evenings. The quality of the food was very very good and lots of choice. Service was very good and prices very reasonable. The hotel have their own car park, off the Morrisons car park and very well sign posted and clear instructions on how to reach it. Without doubt, would recommend the hotel and restaurant to anyone wanting to visit this part of the country.

We visited this establishment with friends over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend and really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is ideally situated in the centre of the Town and has a small car park that accommodates about 8 cars and was never full during our stay.

Staff were very friendly and checked us in with no fuss, and we were shown to our rooms which were in the annex next to the beer garden. Our room was on the ground floor and was really nice and spacious with all the mod cons that would suit even the most demanding of guests. We did have an issue with a wayward toilet seat, but this was rectified whilst we were out for the day.

We had dinner booked in the hotel on the first night which was excellent. My first choice of starter wasn’t available but this wasn’t an issue, and as for mains, I’m happy to report that I am no longer a Chicken Parmo virgin! Restaurant and bar staff worked their socks off, and were extremely pleasant and polite. The chap with the beard that was working the bar on the Sunday evening was master class in his trade, making sure that everyone was supplied with drinks and just the right amount of chat was delivered to make you feel you were a valued Customer.

I’m a big fan of the Full English Breakfast and was really looking forward to a feast in the morning. We were well looked after at breakfast, plenty of choice of cereal and fruit juice and a good cooked selection was available. I was a little disappointed with my cooked breakfast, the bacon was exceptionally well done, and the black pudding was cooked so much, it was very hard almost to the point of being inedible, but a word to the waitress the next day about having a “lightly cooked” breakfast was observed, and an excellent plate was delivered. Could have done with two sausages instead of only one, as I’m a big lad, but I suppose I could have always asked for more. 

We knew that on the Sunday evening there was no evening service for food. We found this a bit odd that a hotel/pub with accommodation couldn’t provide an evening meal, particularly on a Bank Holiday weekend, but thought we’d manage and eat elsewhere. Unfortunately there was a theme running through all the establishments in the town and most of the pubs and eateries stopped serving food at 4pm. The one place we did manage to eat in was obviously rammed and had sold out of a lot of items on the menu, but we managed.

Our weekend went quickly, and we retired to bed on the Sunday evening having been thoroughly refreshed with out stay at The Three Horseshoes. Unfortunately this came to an abrupt end at 04:15 in the morning when the fire alarm went off and we had to evacuate the hotel for some 20 minutes whilst the building was checked. These things happen, it’s not he first time we’ve stayed in a hotel and this has happened, but it’s annoying when sleep is disrupted.

To conclude, would we stay again? Yes we would! Apart from the minor issues reported it was an excellent stay! Well done to all the hard working staff there.

One further thought, why only three horseshoes? Did a three legged horse once stay there? 

Hi LancasterKebabman, Thank you for taking the time to leave us this honest and in-depth review. Customer feedback is very important to us so thank you for bringing the issues you highlighted to our attention and thank you for your patience and understanding. I do apologise for the fire alarm going off, it is definitely not what you want at 4am but like you said these things do happen unfortunately. I am very glad to hear that overall you very much enjoyed your stay with us and would be happy to return. All our staff work very hard to ensure every guest has a great time and from your feedback it is clear to see they didn't disappoint, especially Oliver (chap with the beard). I will pass your compliments on to him, I'm sure he will be absolutely thrilled. Thank you again for your kind review and we hope you will come and stay with us again sometime. Best Wishes, Steph P.S The name "Three Horseshoes" comes from the idea that if a horse lost a shoe it's owner would have to stop at the inn to re-shoe it. Therefore when they arrived the horse only had three shoes.

We stayed for two nights and found our room, like the rest of the hotel, to be exceptionally clean with modern tasteful decor. Felt very covid safe. We had room 11 which is a double that can also be used as a twin. This room was up one flight of stairs and situated in the annex which I’d only a couple of metres from the main building. Excellent bathroom and shower over bath. Breakfast was a little chaotic at times. This is no reflection on the staff who all worked exceptionally hard. Breakfast was freshly cooked served at the table and we really enjoyed it. I would advise booking if you intend to have your evening meal in the hotel. The choice is limited but the food very nice. We will definitely return.

The customer service was outstanding, from the first contact on the telephone. We booked four rooms and needed a ground floor due to mobility issues and the helpful receptionist was able to organise this. The subsequent email communication made sure that everything continued to be smooth.

On the day, all of our group was provided with attentive customer service which made the stay. We ate in the hotel that night and it was lovely to see that the customer service was continued to the wait staff and bar tenders. The evening meal and breakfast was fantastic.

All in all we had an outstanding stay, the rooms catered to everything we needed, they were clean and comfortable and I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

We have just had a weeks break in Barnard Castle and really liked the Three Horseshoes. We went for a drink on Saturday and immediately liked the atmosphere and was comfortable. we ate on the Monday night and I had the steak and my wife the thai curry and we both really enjoyed the meal. We were meant to be eating at another pub on Wednesday night, and although we had booked, there was a long queue outside and little propect of getting in (overbooking with government scheme). Fortunately the The Horseshoes managed to fit us in and I had the lam shanks and my wife the sausage and mash. Really enjoyable and excellent value for money.

What an amazing find this place was!
Never been to Barnard Castle before and this place is an absolute gem. The welcome we received was warm and friendly. Without exception, all the staff were charming, hospitable and ultra efficient.
The catering team deserve the highest accolade possible. Behind the scenes they are absolute magicians! The quality of all the food was amazing (I consider myself a good cook and admit to being ultra critical!) All dishes were delivered piping hot and beautifully presented. We both chose the breaded Brie to start. I had the sea bass, which was heavenly. Hubs had the chicken sizzler dish. He then chose cheesecake for dessert and I opted for the panna cotta with honey. All of it defied criticism. The waiting staff were so professional, friendly, knowledgeable about the menu and enthused about the food. All this goes to demonstrate a happy team and makes the guest feel comfortable and at ease.
Breakfast was also to a very high standard with lots of choice. We both opted for the full English. It arrived hot and again, was beautifully presented. Staff were attentive and eager to make sure we had everything we wanted.
Stayed in Room 1, which overlooks the street at the front.
A big thank you to the housekeeping team. The room was lovely and warm, immaculately clean and the bed linen crisp and fresh. The bed was large and comfortable and we enjoyed a good nights sleep. The room was tastefully decorated and had obviously been recently refurbished to a high standard with no corners cut. There was the usual tea, coffee and biscuits, complimentary toiletries etc, also an iron and ironing board. The bathroom was also immaculate and the shower of very good quality, powerful and good temperature.

How rare to stay somewhere and be 100% happy.
Thank you to the whole team.

Had Sunday Lunch at The Three Horseshoes yesterday and it was absolutely beautiful. I've almost stopped going out for Sunday Lunch because most of the time I'm disappointed, but this was honestly the perfect experience. The food was tasty, hot and plentiful, my Lamb was melt in the mouth, large yorkshire, cabbage, leeks, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, mash and roasties 😋, my husband had Vegetable Rissoto which he said was delicious, all for a reasonable price and the staff were lovely! We will definitely be back!

My wife and I visited Barnard Castle a couple of days ago for a short break and stayed here. What I lovely little well managed hotel it is. As have many, they must have really struggled over the last 18 months or so and things are obviously still not back to normal but how well they are coping. The owners and their staff really do deserve full credit in how they are managing the situation and whilst taking full regard to the regulations, have introduced these with as little fuss as possible and in good humour!

We had a very nice spacious room on the front of the premises with a view onto the busy little town. The en-suite was extremely clean and well-appointed with an immaculate modern bathroom. The bar, although we spent most of our time either outside at the front or in the rear sun lounge area, was very comfortable with a good selection of real ales.

We stayed for two nights and ate in the recently refurbished restaurant on both evenings. They have small but very well-balanced menu and the food and service can only be described as ‘informally superb’. You can always tell the attention to detail of the kitchen if they trim off the pith on a wedge of lemon. They do here and that sets the standard throughout the meal. We both thoroughly enjoyed it. The only disappointment was there being no cheeseboard on the ‘sweets menu’. However, when I mentioned this, I was informed by the Chef that he could certainly do one albeit limited and I was able to follow my perfectly cooked fillet steak with blue cheese, biscuits and a glass of port! A very nice touch, I hope I have not set precedent. Breakfast was equally as good with locally sources ingredients including an excellent sausage.

We found Barnard Castle an intriguing place and the Three Horse Shoes a lovely place to stop. We intend to revisit the town in the autumn. I would like to thank The Three Horseshoes and all its staff for their hard work in these difficult times.

Hi Robert S, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed review of our hotel. We really do have an excellent set of staff, from, chefs, to front of house to cleaners. They all play such an important part in creating the perfect environment for our guests. We will hopefully have our normal full dessert menu up and running again by the time you revisit in autumn, as you menitoned we have had to scale a few things back at the moment due to covid and this is one of them. We are always happy to fulfil your requests where we can, so please dont hesitate to ask! Best Wishes and many thanks once again, Nicola.

We stayed for one night the first weekend that hotels were allowed to accept overnight stays after lockdown. Great location right in the centre of town. Lovely building and our room was very nice and newly renovated. Our room was on the ground floor very close to the outside seating area but we didn’t hear any noise. The breakfast was fantastic! Very busy for lunch and dinner I would recommend booking in advance. Residents car park at the back of the hotel in the Morrisons car park.

Absolutely brilliant. The attractive traditional exterior opens up into a modern, contemporary interior. Our rooms, (Nos. 2 & 5) were clean, modern & nicely decorated & furnished. The bar & restaurant are also clean & contemporary & extremely popular judging by the number of people eating & drinking there.
The menu is modern & eclectic & food itself delicious with very generous portions. We ate breakfast, lunch & dinner in the restaurant both days we stayed.
Service was prompt & polite & there were plenty of helpful staff. All the staff we encountered were extremely friendly & pleasant.
The £750k invested by the owners has been very well spent in modernising the whole operation.
We will return!

All the rooms are done to the same standard on site and off. The super king size rooms have a lot more space. Some rooms have baths with showers over them and some just have large walk in showers. It just depends what you are looking for.
