Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We loved our stay here. All of the staff were super friendly and helpful, the spa was great and much better than we were expecting. Our room was spacious and comfortable. Our evening meal in the restaurant was delicious, and so nice to have such interesting and inventive veggie options! Would definitely come back :)

This is a superb manor house in a quiet location about 10-15 mins walk into Appleby. The staff were friendly and helpful, and we were made to feel very welcome. Our room was decorated and furnished in the correct period which added to the feel. Breakfast was superb, my wife and I had the full English. our plateds were warmed, which was a nice touch, the quality was perfect. I've stayed in all types of hotels all over the world and this is probably one of the best full English breakfasts I've had. I always rate a place on whether I'd go back, and in this case I certainly would. It would be a great place to explore the countryside of N.Yorks from without the noise of a town or city.

Lovely staff. The best part being the staff. They are happy to help with whatever. They just want you to have a great staff. We had a glorious restaurant meal, and also ate in the bistro and had afternoon tea ( and large breakfasts!) Lovely views down towards the castle as you eat. Enjoyed cocktails in the bar too. Nice seating rooms to sit and chat. Good power shower and good quality bath products. Felt like a very well run family hotel.

This review is more about a staff member than the actual hotel. A young man who looked after us both on arrival and the next morning at breakfast. His name is David and we all thought he was absolutely wonderful - a true professional. He was polite and helpful and went out of his way for us all. Good old fashioned hospitality that we don’t see all that often these days. Thank you David for making us feel so welcome 😊

A large group of us had Xmas dinner here today and it was very good. The food was excellent and the service friendly. My wife's gluten free choices were no problem. Very nice Christmas atmosphere. Clean and tidy toilets immaculate. Wheelchair friendly.

Had a very nice afternoon tea here today for a special birthday celebration. We were a party of 12, the service was very friendly & attentive but not over the top. We were offered refills for tea & coffee without asking & happily served with bottled water when requested. The afternoon tea itself was good & plentiful!

Today 8 ladies met for afternoon tea, firstly we were taken to a room with coffee tables we asked politely if it would be possible to be seated at dining room tables it didn’t go down well but they did move us . We were asked if we wanted tea or coffee the tea came out and placed on the table one of our group was gluten free her sandwiches had crusts on the bread all the others didn’t , hers was dry and curled at the edges ! Christmas cake fell apart when it was bitten into left with a plate of crumbs ! The individual trifles were awful not fresh cream and the custard tasted of powder . We were never asked if everything was ok or if we needed fresh tea , when we asked for fresh tea the waiter never spoke just picked up one of the two pots . When we went to pay the man asked if it was ok so we told him of our concerns he said oh shrugged his shoulders and smirked !! The receptionist was also informed but that also fell foul ! We won’t be returning !!

My partner took me for a 2 day spa break as a surprise for my birthday. What a wonderful stay. A lovely traditional hotel where you always felt you as the customer were the priority. The room was beautiful and the bed was really comfortable. We used the spa on 3 occasions it was really clean and well equipped. The staff were really helpful. We had dinner in the Bistro and the restaurant during our stay and the food in both was delicious. All in all it was a perfect stay. I would highly recommend it and we shall be returning.

Stayed in deluxe room with panoramic view over hills and Appleby. Room was spotlessly clean, comfortable and spacious, with coffee and teas available. Wi-fi weak, but not a concern. Service in restaurant and bistro was excellent and the food first-rate; all staff helpful and friendly. Good choice for breakfast - coffee/tea and cooked breakfast served at table.
