Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed for two nights in June as part of a Wowcher deal and we were so impressed.
The room was spotless, well furnished and the guestbook is absolutely hilarious! The menu was pub grub and it was AMAZING - we ate both nights in the hotel and we were absolutely stuffed and so satisfied - the lasagna is a must try and the portions are massive (but not over facing). The breakfast was included and the quality was superb; the meat was clearly locally sourced and everything was cooked to perfection.
It was my other half's birthday when we stayed and the owner brought him a candle in his breakfast cumberland sausage and sang to him - so funny and made his day.
The staff go out of their way to help and gave us tips on where to visit locally (I would definitely recommend Appleby Castle and Pooley Bridge).
We will definitely be back with our little dog (who also had a lovely time eating too much) and look forward to drinking 15 pints in one sitting again!

Booked a table for a weekday evening and when we arrived we were made to feel very welcome. Shown our table (2 adults and 3 kids), drinks ordered and a short chat about how our day was, top marks! Food ordered and drinks arrived in great time. Kids food came out first, simple but so many restaurants get this wrong and leave the kids waiting, again top marks C&C. All of the food was tasty and well presented, kids ate it all and both the Cushion burger and the Cajun chicken were really good. Couldn’t see onion rings on the menu, but the gentleman said he could rustle something up (OMG...see the photo - they were amazing). Kids were well behaved so had earned themselves a pudding. Couldn’t see a kids sized option on the menu, but again our needs were met and kids sized puddings were bought out, along with some chocolate ice cream for our youngest. From start to finish, the team at Crown & Cushion made this visit a great experience and the food was just as good. Well done, 5 stars from us!

This booking was given to us as a gift and what a gift. The owners did everything they could to make this stay enjoyable, changed anything on the menu to fit what we wanted that's my idea of service nothing to much trouble. Minor criticism but did not detract from stay shower cubicle a bit snug

Made a reservation through booking.com for one night on the 12th of June. Unfortunately my Father passed away meaning I was no longer able to stay. At the earliest opportunity I informed Crown and Cushion which was 10 days prior to the reservation, I requested a refund of the deposit which was declined. They offered to transfer the booking to another date but there was unfortunately no availability, so the deposit was lost which I could accept.

However what I hadn't realised was that I needed to press a button on booking.com to cancel the reservation. So despite informing Crown and Cushion that I wouldn't be staying the booking remained and I was subsequently billed the full amount. On the 12th of June I messaged Crown and Cushion requesting they give some consideration to a refund. I have not had a reply.

Having not visited I cannot comment on the accommodation but if their customer care is anything to go by I'd be seriously concerned.

Our family of 5 stayed in the two bedroom loft room suite. It had been refurbished to a very high standard. Both bedrooms had a double and single bed. The bathroom had bath with shower over. The living room had a small sofa and dining table and 4 chairs and tea and coffee making facilities. Decor was modern but in keeping with the lovely beamed ceilings. The rooms were quiet too with no noise from the pub. The church clock nearby didn’t disturb us at all.

Ate here recently, we sat in the beer garden at the back which looks like it's just been renovated to a high standard. Tv outside too so we could watch Sky Sports News. The chap who served us (I assume the owner/manager) was very attentive and helpful. We only had sandwiches off the smaller menu but they were perfectly acceptable. We will for sure be back here if we're in the area again.

Wonderful welcome and an enjoyable stay. We were shown to our room and breakfast times etc were all explained. The room was very clean and plenty of space even with our dog. Excellent breakfast and good to have the choice of a later breakfast if needed. We dined here on both evenings and again there is a good selection available and cooked to order and well served too. All the staff were very friendly and helpful especially with suggestions for dog walks. Would love to stay again soon. Many thanks to all

We stayed in the Mews which is a short walk across the bridge but owned by C&C - nicely furnished twin room, lounge, small kitchen and bathroom with shower.
Access details were sent before making it very easy to find.
We ate dinner and breakfast at C&C - both very tasty, large portions and thoroughly recommended.
Friendly owners and staff and also helpful changing date of the booking due to rail strikes. Can't recommend highly enough

We visited while on holiday as a family including two children. The menu is varied and caters well for all. You place your order at the bar and the food brought to our table. Service was quick and efficient. The food was tasty and good value for money,

It’s a lovely settling right in the heart of the town, very much worth a visit.

the really friendly and helpful staff made this a good start to our night away. The Crown & Cushion is a large pub/hotel in the centre of Appleby. Our room was excellent and had just been refurbished. The food whist typical pub grub was cooked very well and can be recommended. The pub itself is a bustling town centre pub which however still felt comfortable. The full English breakfast was excellent and freshly cooked. The cask ale was kept very well and they have a good choice of gins. Appleby is a pleasant and historic town .
All in all I would recommend the Crown and Cushion and was good value for money.
