The Midland Hotel has 5 fully re-furbished en-suite rooms, a lovely bar and restaurant. We have three hand-drawn pumps offering a selection of local award-winning beers, ales, traditional ciders and perrys. Cumbrians are fond of their pub food and our menu includes some of the all-time favourites: local butcher's Cumberland sausage in a giant Yorkshire Pudding, lasagna made with best minced steak & red wine, ham & eggs or steak & ale . The Midland is known for its specialty dishes too. Daily specials can include a creamy Italian risotto, a range of Mediterranean treats in the tapas style menu, a Thai curry and there's always a selection of vegetarian specials. We aim to use as many locally-sourced ingredients as we can and make as many of our dishes on site as possible. We use Appleby Creamery's award-winning cheeses in our specialty dishes or you can have a selection as a light meal or dessert.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights. The room was most comfortable and the food was excellent (some delicious homemade dishes!). The owners and staff are very friendly and helpful.

The hotel is ideally located next to Appleby Station.

We hope to return again soon.

Nice place to stay - very comfortable - food good - nice people. Was worried about it being a pub and Saturday night and the possible noise - but this wasn't a problem. It was a good place to stay. In fact - I have stayed at a few places in Appleby and this was the best I have stayed. If - like me - you are concluding the Dales High Way - this is a good place to end up.

Just got back from an Easter Break at the Midland Hotel with my partner which we booked last minute for a fantastic price.

The hotel is owned by a couple who seemed lovely and have completely renovated the facilities - the bar area was modern and reasonably priced drinks with a good selection of real ale. We stayed in room 3, which was not the biggest room but was modern and extremely clean with a good sized en-suite. A wide range of coffee etc was provided in the room with hairdryer etc which was a nice touch and the bed was fab (great nights sleep!).

Breakfast is included in the price and was great. It was lovely having a chat with Amie (owner) who asked us about our stay and plans for the day where she recommended sights etc. The food was brill and overall just a really nice stay- really glad we booked and definitely recommend!

Pleasant and helpful staff. Alcohol expensive. Very busy so we ate later. Food pretty good and they catered for my vegan friend - they also cater for dogs - a menu of their own can you believe. Room clean, stairs going up not clean & smelt of dogs. Unfortunately very noisy at night village clock chimed half hourly from 4am and woke us all & then at 6am all the glass bottles & rubbish recycled below our window., unavoidable I know. Breakfast could have been better please don't soak mushrooms in fat you could squeeze it out.! inedible. Black pudding needed cooking more. Id like it if fruit & yoghurts could be available, also sweetener & margarine on table for those of us trying to get thinner.

stayed at the Midland on Friday 14th September en route to York, the bedroom had obviously been newly decorated in a "boutique" style and although small it was really beautiful and spotlessly clean, the bathroom had everything you could possibly need with a real big walk in shower. We found that we didnt have to move out of the hotel as it had everything we wanted.....lovely meal menu....great selection of drinks including real ales...and we were made really welcome by the owners and staff. The breakfast the next morning was superb.....we will certainly be returning to the Midland in the very near future.

The hotel location is excellent and right in the middle of town. taxi right outside the hotel. Public transports are within minutes walk from hotel. city centre/deansgate is within 5 to 10 minutes walk. the lady at check in tried to check me in early as I arrived at 0900 but wasn't successful as the hotel was fully booked and catering for many events. however, the service throughout the hotel facilities were professional and friendly. The gym has excellent equipment and by far one of the best I have seen in my travels. The Spa and the hairdressers are excellent too. the suite is very spacious with all facilities one might need. Preferred newspaper was delivered everyday to the room. special thanks to the two gentlemen in the concierge for helping us receive my friend's lost luggage. the hotel has a lot of character and works are constant for improving the services. One minor let down was the breakfast as the options were not so expansive and you had to pay a little extra if one wanted to order from a menu..the coffee also had to be purchased if you do not enjoy the free Nescafe. I did expect a higher quality breakfast menu especially that breakfast is paid for and I felt I had to pay twice or one and a half for it. However, this is just a minor issue for me and I would highly recommend the hotel and I would definitely go back there.

This place was a great find. We stayed here with 6 friends and two dogs for 2 nights on a walking weekend. The rooms and en- suite bathrooms were all beautifully clean, newly decorated and well appointed. The staff were very friendly and helpful, offering to dry all our walking boots by the boiler when we arrived back from our walk. They made the dogs very welcome too!
We ate in the hotel on one of the evenings. The menu was extensive and varied and the food excellent. Breakfast was good too; freshly cooked to order with plenty of toast and hot drinks.
Positioned a short walk from the centre of Appleby, this is really a great place to stay.

We dropped into this hotel when we had a couple of hours free on our Flying Scotsman trip. The hotel managers discovered we would be around, and took the decision to open their bar on their day off. We enjoyed their selection of beer, and saw plenty others enjoying the selection of improvised bar snacks they had quickly arranged for us,
The decor was a pleasant surprise. Ladies - don't leave without a trip to the loo. Bling!

Myself and 3 others were traveling on Tornado, the Steam Train and as one member of our party is disabled, it was only prudent that we find somewhere close to the Railway Station for Lunch. The Midland Hotel was that choice, it is only a hundred yards or so from the Platform, so is ideally situated. I made the Table Reservations at least 2 weeks prior to the trip.

The Steam Train ride was superb, the weather excellent, we had only had a very light Breakfast as the Menu at the Midland was just brimming with mouthwatering items. Myself and my Brother-In-Law love our Steaks, so were looking forward to those enormously. The ladies on the trip, it was the day after Valentines Day after all, were also looking forward to choosing from what appears to be a great Menu.

We deliberately did not partake of the trolley service provided by Northern Rail on the Train but instead waited to sit and enjoy the fare of the Midland.

So, we alighted from the train and walked to the Midland Hotel. As I expected with a full load of passengers all getting off at Appleby the place was pretty busy to say the least. No panic, we had a Table booked. I managed to stop a Staff member and ask about my Table and was pointed towards 2 Tables each with 4 seats, I could take which ever I wanted, great.

My Sister then asked the same Staff member, a few minutes later if there was a Menu available, as the only thing on the table was a list of sandwiches and light snacks. She was directed to look at the adjacent Blackboard. This contained the exact same items as the list on the tables. Sandwiches, Soup, Quiche and Chips I think. I asked about the Full Menu and was abruptly told that it was just too busy and was NOT available.

The disappointment was obvious. We had booked a Hotel with an extensive Menu and arrived to find Soup and a Sandwich..........

No point trying to find another location now, as they would all be as full as the Midland.

So, a Beer and a Sandwich with Chips was my choice instead of the Low Howgill Rib-eye with Chips, not quite a suitable replacement but nothing else took my fancy.

The others also sat and ate there "Happy Meals" without too much whimpering but we were all very disappointed, very disappointed.....

I understand the Midland Hotel was busy, what did they expect, with 500 people alighting from a train at 1pm. I can only think that somehow, even with all the local advertising it took them by surprise. Only 2 people behind the small Bar, might just have squeezed a third person behind there but whatever.

If there is/was a plus point, it saved me a small fortune I am sure, as I had offered as a Valentines Day treat to pay for the meals of all 4 of us. So, at 6 quid for Soup and a Sandwich, I got off very lightly indeed.

Sorry but if the normal Menu was not going to be available, I think that could have been made obvious to me when I booked the Table.

Oh, just been reminded, that the Quiche, although nice, was chilled. The only warm items we recall were the Soup and the Chips.

The pint of Ale I chose had sold out by the time a second pint was required, so I did not bother.

Nice little Pub, good Ale, Staff as I said were obviously under pressure and quite abrupt, overall a disappointment and not a spot I will ever rely on again.

I can see you are a person who does there research and is well prepared, I commend that, I'm very pleased you looked at the menu on the website and liked the look of it, I wondered if you also noticed we usually open at 5.00 pm on Tuesdays and do not serve food, never have? Anybody that had booked a table, as far as I'm aware was told there would be a limited menu, when booking, if this had not been the case, I can only apologize. As you rightly pointed out up to 500 people arrived on one train at 12pm approx. If you add up ALL the tables in ALL the eateries in Appleby the town could not feed everyone in the limited time the train was here. You appear to think we were not prepared for the volume of people who arrived wanting to eat or drink, I take issue. The fact we prepared a special menu so we could serve as many people as possible, as fast as possible contradicts that view. We presumed the highlight of most peoples trip would actually be the train and the journey, we would have loved to have been able to serve our regular menu but unfortunately this would have meant only 30-40 people eating each day, leaving another 40+ disappointed (we served approx 80 lunches, plus takeaways, each day). We had senior figures from Northern Rail, Schenker group and RAIL Magazine, who all made a point of thanking us for our splendid efforts catering with so many people in such a short space of time. Yes we were busy behind the bar, but when everybody arrives at the same time, we are going to be, nothing we can't cope with, Appleby fair week is a lot busier. Every member of staff there came in on their day off, never complained and enjoyed the day and the banter with the customers when we had the time to chat. We may have had to raise our voices too be heard, due to the volume of people, but I would not say anyone was abrupt. Beer running out: If you have a lot of people, you sell a lot of beer, if it run's out we replace it, sorry if the new one is not to your palette. The feed back we have received over the 3 days via individuals, railway companies, Twitter, Facebook and the rail press has been more than generous, I'm sorry if you we did not meet up with your expectations on this occasion. We will be taking this one negative review (out of over 300 customers served) in our stride.

Hi The long answer is we have 2 dog friendly bedrooms, we add a surcharge if they are staying in the room,as the rooms on average take longer to clean or in some cases we cannot let the following day. we allow dogs in the bar area and snug area where people can eat but not the main dining area. Dogs are allowed in while eating breakfast, as long as they are under the control of the owners, and not bothering other guests. Short answer is we are a country pub, dogs are welcome.
