Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Many thanks. Shame the weather was so bad for everyone but the lakes looked fantastic with all the snow. So pleased you got home safely.

Just returned from a lovely weekend break with our dog at Virginia Cottage. Hosts Angus and Sherry made us feel so welcome the moment we walked in the door, and made a fuss over our dog Brock, which was just fantastic. Nice room, comfy bed. Great breakfasts in a friendly atmosphere and sausage treats for the dogs is a lovely touch. Wouldn’t hesitate to return, and recommend to all. This place genuinely wants you and your dogs to have a good stay!

Stayed for a week, ideal location only a few minutes walk from Lake Windermere. Excellent hosts. Room was clean and well maintained and most importantly the bed was lovely and comfortable. Good quality breakfast. No on-site parking, however this wasn’t a problem as there was good public parking close by. Would highly recommended staying at Virginia Cottage if you’re visiting the area

Virginia Cottage is perfectly placed to enjoy Bowness on Windermere and as a base to explore the lakes. It is an old building, full of character and lots of personal touches from the owners Angus and Sherry. Our room (6) was spotless and really comfortable and warm, perfect after a day out walking in the rain! The room had lots of little touches that you just don’t find in chain hotels, fresh milk in the fridge downstairs for tea and coffee, great Wi-Fi and comfy seating areas. In the public areas there are blankets and treats for 4 legged visitors (we didn’t have one with us but we are dog lovers and like to see them well catered for!) Angus and Sherry are brilliant hosts, they know the local area and recommended lots of places to visit and eat. Make sure you book breakfast as well as the room, Angus’s breakfasts are brilliant and Sherry’s welcome is a great way to start the day. There isn’t onsite parking but a very large and reasonably priced car park a 5 minute walk away. We will definitely return to Virginia Cottage.

I have just spent Bank holiday weekend at Virginia Cottage in Bowness, and would highly recommend, particularly if you are a doggie owner. The lovely decorated rooms are so clean and well equipped, and it was a pleasure to meet Angus and Sherry who were so very welcoming. Bon and I will certainly be returning.

We spent the August b/hol weekend at Virginia Cottage - it was wonderful! We needed dog-friendly accommodation and we’ve never stayed anywhere else that has come close to what we’ve just experienced at Virginia Cottage. Lovely hosts, Angus and Sherrie attended both ours and our dog’s every needs - even down to providing a doggy brekkie (chopped sausage), while we enjoyed ours. It’s the little things that showed how much they cared about their guests - there were too many to mention. Spotless, comfortable accommodation and a location that couldn’t be better - right in the heart of Bowness. Looking forward to returning as soon as we can.

A very pleasant stay, the hosts could not do enough for us. Breakfast was fantastic. The whole place was very clean and is situated ideally for local shops and pubs. Also not too far for the boat trips.

Stayed in the skylight room last minute on a day out and Angus the lovely owner met us at the property within five mins. Central location, parking a couple of mins walk away. Room spotless and tasteful. Drinks tray good and lovely biscuits too! Had to leave before breakfast unfortunately. Host really helpful and knowledgeable, recommended some great bars and restaurants. We stumbled across this gem by accident but will definitely be back for a longer stay!

We had a fabulous stay at the Virginia Cottage whilst visiting the area. Angus and Sherry (the owners) made us feel so welcome and couldn't do enough for us. Angus has a mindful of knowledge on the area which made it easier for our stay and locations to visit. This was topped off with a lovely ensuite room and the breakfast well it's just fantastic. Such a shame we had to leave and will definitely be going back. We highly recommend staying here.
