We stayed here for 2 nights. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a lovely lady who took our temperature and talked us through the safety procedures etc regarding COVID. Check in was easy but we were disappointed to hear that we had a tiny slot to get breakfast the next morning - between 8 and 8:30. With it being a holiday, we didn’t fancy waking up so early to eat at this time - we felt restricted in a way.

Entering the room for the first time was quite a shock. After booking online and seeing photos of the rooms, I was expecting better decor but the room was very basic and it was in good need of a refurbishment. The room smelt ever so slightly damp. Despite this, the linen and towels were nice and clean and we were told to leave our dirty towels outside our door in order to get new clean ones which was good.

Other reviews mention the issue with noise. This wasn’t a problem for us! However, we would’ve benefited from air conditioning or even a fan! It got very hot during the night and we had to open the window where the fan from the kitchen was buzzing.

The room had brew making facilities, a hair dryer and a TV. The shower was big and spacious.

We didn’t end up having breakfast on either of the mornings we were at the Stags Head which is a massive shame as we paid for it to be included - we just didn’t appreciate being restricted to a time slot.

Despite the disappointment on arrival, our stay at the Stags Head was good. We needed somewhere clean and safe to sleep and that’s what we got. Just a shame about breakfast.

We actually cancelled this booking so I can’t comment on the hotel itself. I have mobility issues and so choosing a hotel with a car park is essential for me and is always my first filter option when booking. I rang the hotel to check the check in time, as 4.30pm sounded late and they advised this was correct and that they would direct us to the car park. Upon further investigation, it turns out there is no car park and you need to park in the closest public car park, which you have to pay for and is a good 5 mins away. The woman on the phone was rude and very short with us. The only redeeming feature was that when I complained they cancelled the booking without charge. In my opinion, you should not be able to advertise parking as a facility. Lucky I phoned before we arrived.

Rooms are looking tired and in need of modernisation and a lick of paint wouldn't go amiss. Drinks are expensive even with the 10% guest discount. And whilst talking drinks, this place stays open longer than anywhere else around there, so all the drinkers head there so can get noisy till the early hours as we found out at 1.20am with a fracas outside. The bit about parking is misleading, there isn't any parking on site, it is only a short walk (5 mins) to a car park, but charging is 24hrs, so an overnight stay of 12 hours would cost £7. The highlight was the breakfast which was cooked to order, and staff were pleasant enough considering the difficult times at the moment.

First things to be noted, this is a pub with accomodation. Not a 5star spa, therefore dependent on your needs it might not be suitable
Check in is simple enough.
We booked a suite with 4 poster. Although the furniture is tired we found the room clean and much larger than our requirements needed
Four poster bed not the most comfortable but adequate.
Not much of a view. (If you want a lake view then you need to look elsewhere, with budget to match.
Bathroom. No bath but shower (monsoon shower being fitted was extremely ambitious as water pressure isn't great. (Floor tiles need re-grouting (before someone complains about a cut foot).
The floor are very "creaky" and although next to no one else staying you could hear EVERY footstep at 2am)
Breakfast was very good and more than enough for most appetites.
Overall. an okay stay (for us)
It is, was it is. and is useful for a 1 night stay. However I would not recommend anything longer than a weekend. Bowness is expensive enough as it is and the Stags has priced itself due to location and NOT for facilities or experience

Ordered a beef baguette when out with the family of six, I received not slivers of beef on there but a good cut. Drinks a tad pricey but a good atmosphere there.

Definitely value for money and a fast service as well

Stayed in the Windermere room which is the most expensive and is located on the second floor. Spacious room with 4 poster bed and sitting area. nice bathroom with what looks like new fittings and tiling etc. But totally ruined by the lack of water pressure ......... I literally had trouble getting wet, and even the basin tap ran at a dribble. A simple pump would make this into a habitable room, but if you want to have a shower during your stay, forget it.

The bed is old and not very comfy- needs a new mattress.

Overall a very poor experience.

On arrival no one at desk, no bell to ring. Young girl walked past and went outside so followed and asked how to check in. She then came and did this and showed us to the room. Room basic - the 2 single beds were so narrow and the mattress really uncomfortable. Windows were dirty. Bathroom looked newly done but the shower was no more than a dribble, unable to get soap out of hair at all. Breakfast was plentiful but served on a cold plate meaning it was cold by the time we got it. Felt unsafe as servers were not wearing masks although all guests walked in wearing them. Worst of all - the fire escape was padlocked. I was shocked and went back a couple of times to make sure I was not mistaken at which point another guest was also looking at it.

Stayed 2 nights last weekend in room 14. Great location, lovely staff and a good pub meals and full English breakfast. Room 14 was small and dated, net curtains, old carpets , sparsely furnished. Shower was excellent. Room window backs onto kitchens below so extractor fan noise and cooking smells in room if windows open. Can’t fault the hotel staff and bar/waiting staff who were all good. 10% off drinks and food too. Just felt the room was a little shabby for the price.

We popped in here for a drink and were really pleased we did. Lovey little bar with friendly staff, all COVID practices are being followed, customers have temperature taken upon arrival, although the bar is quite small there are screens between the tables to help protect everyone.
Would recommend for a friendly drink, they also show the football if that is your thing.

Before booking we checked on trip advisor and were slightly worried about the hotel facilities and state of repair from previous reviews. We needn't have worried as room 18 looked like it had been recently decorated, with a new carpet, water pressure and shower was fine and everything clean. So first impressions were great. Pleasantly surprised we had a lovely evening out in ambleside and came back around 22:30. As the weather was great we had left the window to the room open to try to cool it down but it was still very warm as no aircon but we knew about this so left the window open. However what isn't made clear on the website or in most recent reviews (probably because we have been in lockdown for 18 months) is the noise directly outside the rooms. The bar directly below the rooms stays open until 1 a.m. which wouldn't be a problem if everyone stayed inside. Unfortunately there is a beer garden there so everyone congregates outside. Even worse as the bar is the only one nearby that remains open until late it was 2 a.m. both nights of our stay when people began dispersing. Closing the single glazed windows made little difference to the noise. Something has to be done about this as it ruined our stay and our impressions of what would have been a decent hotel in a great location in Bowness. Got to say it would be fine if you are deaf.
