Its amenities are a hit too, with the well-appointed rooms and delectable dining options standing out. Visitors are charmed by the hotel's elegant atmosphere, festive decorations, and the seamless integration of historic and modern elements.

Detailed Reviews
We had the most perfect wedding at Abbey House Hotel. Laura and Lauren the wedding coordinators were just amazing. Nothing was too much trouble and they made our woodland wedding dreams a reality.
The attention to detail was just phenomenal from the decor to the food and the overall service that we and our guests received. They really did think of everything and even helped us arrange a pre-wedding celebration meal the evening before the wedding for our family and friends that had travelled up and gave us our own private dining experience.
All the staff at Abbey House went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and even let us plant a sausage in the gardens in the hope of good weather for our wedding (it worked).
The food was amazing and it was such a nice touch to be able to offer our guests a variety of dishes for our wedding breakfast rather than a set meal.
The other wedding suppliers that the coordinators recommended was so helpful as well when planning a wedding in an area not local to us.
The grounds are beautiful (hence why we wanted an outdoor wedding) and just a short stroll takes you to the Abbey ruins.
The rooms are next level in terms of decor and cleanliness and the honeymoon suites are just incredible.
We will 100% return for our 1 year wedding anniversary, if not before.
Abbey House is so reasonably priced whether you're going for a short stay or thinking of booking your wedding or special occasion with them and we cannot praise the staff, building and grounds and location enough. Thank you for giving us the most incredible wedding and making our family and friends stay so fabulous!

We’ve just returned from a Saturday night Break for my 50th birthday celebrations and I have to say I thought the hotel was absolutely incredible. It’s an old building with a new addition, which it’s tastefully refurbished in a boutique style with plush velvets, touches of gold and antique wooden furniture. We stayed in the winter suite which was a huge room with a good size bathroom which contained a huge freestanding bath and large shower. The value for money is incredible especially if you book in advance like we did, we’ve often paid double or trouble for a room similar. we spent the afternoon having drinks in the bar and catching up before having a three course meal in the restaurant which again was absolutely fabulous. The atmosphere of the restaurant is cozy and chic and the food was delightful. Every person on the table, enjoyed all three courses no one for once had any complaints! There was a wedding going on as there would be frequently in this venue as it is a wedding hotel predominantly I think, but this did not impact our experience at all. There was still plenty of staff which were all very attentive and very helpful and noise levels were absolutely fine which were a concern of some of our party before we arrived. The service was definitely one of the standout things of our trip. It’s rare to get a hotel so large with so many people and not find the staff a bit stretched. They were all lovely and the lady who looked after us at dinner was just so on the ball and checked frequently that we were having a good evening and everything was fine with our meals. Breakfast was also fantastic and again the staff looked after us so well even with all of our demands for extra toast, tea and coffee ! We can be a bit of a demanding group as we all have pretty high standards so to see that there were no issues and we all thoroughly enjoyed it again is quite rare . The grounds are lovely too, as some of our party went for a walk down to the Abbey and the outside of the hotel has lots of nice seating areas so I imagine it’s a wonderful place to visit in the summer and equally is Cosy in the winter. We had all paid for different rooms and it really has something for every budget. Some of us booked suites and some booked standard rooms and they were all lovely and great value for money. It’s just a rare find to be honest and we all had a wonderful breakaway and it was a great start to my 50th birthday celebrations. Thank you for looking after us and making us feel so welcome!

Well, where do I start ? Over the past 5 months I have spent no less than 72 nights at Abbey House Hotel, whilst my partner was hospitalised just over the road at Furness General. I spent 4 nights each week there during that period, and was so very well cared for. The excellent service and professional care I have received at the hotel has been second to none. I could not have wished for a better 'second home' during a difficult time, and I was offered excellent rates for bed and breakfast, also enjoying delicious and reasonably priced evening meals there most evenings after my hospital visits. It would be unfair to single out any particular staff member, as ALL of those I encountered were professionally trained, extremely friendly and helpful, and I was welcomed back like an old friend each time I checked in, many of the staff being aware of the reason I was there. From senior management, reception staff, restaurant managers, waiting and serving staff, bar staff and even the friendly cleaners, everyone with whom I came in contact were the very best ! Breakfast and evening meals were excellent, well cooked and presented, and always very much enjoyed. Rooms are spacious and well equipped, and the hotel was always immaculately clean and tidy, as were its impressive and spacious grounds. During my last evening there I was presented with gifts and lovely flowers to pass on to my partner Ann, who was delighted to receive them. I really cannot recommend Abbey House Hotel highly enough to anyone who chooses to stay there, and we as a family very much look forward to future stays once our life returns to normality ! Many thanks indeed.

We've just returned from a weekend stay at The Abbey House Hotel, 30th June to 2nd July 2023 . We are very grateful to the hotel for holding our balance on credit when we had to cancel our original booking due to a family bereavement on the day of travelling. On arranging a further date, the hotel offered a free upgrade to a room in the main hotel as there was a function on & the original room was above the function suite.
We stayed in The Ullswater on the ground floor & the room had everything we needed - King sized bed, tea/coffee facilities, hairdryer, wifi, free parking and breakfast included.
The room was large & comfortable with two armchairs and a big bathroom with disabled access/walk in shower/toilet. Our only criticism was that the floor got very slippy in the bathroom when it was wet but we were aware and took care to avoid accidents.
We had our evening meal in the restaurant on the first night and we both enjoyed a lovely meal - my husband had haddock & chips and I had breast of chicken with bacon jam. A lovely waiter served us, Henry I think his name was, and he had the pleasure of making his first ever liquor coffee for me which was perfect.
Breakfast was delicious, self serve continental plus a choice of cooked breakfast ordered at the table. We both had variations of a Full English, all made with locally sourced foods. The second morning breakfast was a bit disorganised with a bit of a wait for coffee and toast but the food was worth waiting for.
We had a walk down to Furness Abbey which was sign posted down a path from the hotel and took about 10 minutes. There is an entry fee to get into the grounds but you can get great views from walking around the perimeter fence.
We went out for the day and had a walk along the coast at Barrow, very windy but enjoyable and then we had a drive up to Lake Windermere which took about 40 minutes, followed by a boat trip to Ambleside.
Overall, we had a lovely weekend in this beautiful hotel and thank the staff for allowing us to postpone our booking and for the room upgrade.

This hotel is a true gem, set amidst pristine grounds that are beautifully enhanced by stunning Christmas lights, creating a magical atmosphere. The interior is elegantly decorated with plush furnishings that perfectly complement the building's style and architecture.
The staff were exceptionally friendly, professional, and welcoming, adding to the overall experience. While there was a slight delay during lunch—particularly with dessert—it was understandable given how busy they were.
Our classic room was gorgeous, exuding a sense of luxury with its tasteful decor and abundance of cushions on the bed. However, the pillows could use an upgrade, as they were a bit of a letdown. The room also became quite hot due to the old iron radiators, though the receptionist explained that the heating had been turned up due to earlier cold weather, which unfortunately clashed with an unexpected change in temperature.
Breakfast was outstanding, with options catering to various dietary needs. As someone who is gluten and dairy-free, I had one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve ever experienced.
Overall, our stay was wonderful, and I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area.

Our two night stay couldn't have been better. The room was quiet, large and extremely comfortable. The bathroom was lovely and modern with lashings of hot water and a fabulous power shower. Breakfast service was superb and generous with everything you could possibly desire from simple cereals and toast, fresh fruit and compote to a great range of cooked breakfasts served quickly and efficiently by friendly, helpful staff. Our evening meal in Oscar's Restaurant was really good too; modern cuisine, very well cooked and presented and very good value! The historic red sandstone building is really something to look at, set in its beautiful gardens and within easy walking distance of the stunning Furness Abbey. The edge of town location is a real plus as well, making it easy to access the surrounding countryside, coastline and the Lake District a few miles to the north. Will come again for sure!

We are a family with a wheelchair user, wheeled walking aid and one with a shuffle gait attending a close family members wedding, found day very stressful. Wheelchair user left at back of room during service no where for chair to go so couldn’t see anything of service. Oscars not suitable to get in without blocking people other seating areas around hotel same problem, from main entrance to ceremony room very heavy door hard to mange while pushing chair. garden access via metal portable ramp which you have to find a member of staff to put up cos it doesn’t stay down all the time partners normal wheelchair wheels were at the very edge of ramp so any larger wheelchairs wouldn’t fit plus managing to open a door while holding on to wheelchair on top of step while lining up for ramp not for faint hearted, family member with walking aid and one with shuffle walk unable to do steps found the ramp very steep. When in garden no access to lower levels for photos with anyone unable to do more steps. Upstairs disabled toilet fantastic set up access is by a pass key available from reception to be handed back after use not by radar key. Lifts only just fit standard chair would not fit larger chair. Had to put wheelchair user in lift and go down stairs to get them out couldn’t fit anyone else in lift with chair. Down stairs disabled toilet near Cavendish suite which was locked had to find staff member to open, inside it was too small to do any kind of wheelchair transfers safety, no drop down rail by toilet, orange falls safety cord fastened up out of reach with bin in way so if needed not accessible. ( orange cords to be reached from floor if user has fall and needs assistance) if able to do a few steps leaving the wheelchair outside the toilet is option but it is on slope so if not able to walk across slope then option is too walk outside up hill to go to reception to get pass key for upstairs toilet or put wheelchair user in lift head up the stairs and then get them out head to reception then back to the toilet then repeat to get back to cavendish suite. Disabled parking at hotel is plentiful and easy to find. Staff were friendly and nothing too much trouble,

This was our 4th time here. We cannot fault the hotel in general - the rooms are absolutely amazing. You feel like a King and Queen for a day in them. We were given Ullswater room. We've stayed in Ullswater before so we knew what to expect. What we did not bargain for, was the horrendous noise from the people attending the Charity Ball in the function suite as they were all leaving the hotel or making their way back to their rooms. We are no killjoys, but honestly - the location of the Ullswater room, being the only bedroom in the main corridor on the ground floor between the reception and the function area, and right beside the public toilets and lift, meant we were subjected to everyone leaving the function around midnight all tromping past our door singing at the top of their voices, banging on our door, and generally making a complete nuisance of themselves. We felt reception staff could perhaps have asked them to keep the noise down slightly as they must have heard it all. I dont mind general noise if your room is above a function suite, or the music etc, but this was just downright rudeness from the partygoers. It did somewhat ruin what was supposed to be a lovely birthday celebration. We spoke to reception when checking out and was told "sorry about that, but a function letter was sent out to everyone". That may be so (we didn't get anything other than the generic email that always warns you a function "may" be on when you are staying), but a function letter does not really mean you should have people bang on your door shouting and yelling after midnight. That is something we would expect from a cheap hotel in Spain, not a hotel of this calibre.
With that aside, we really do love this hotel. It is so cosy and comfortable. The location is beautiful, out in the countryside.

Last weekend was my sons wedding at Abbey house hotel. The night before wedding we had a barbecue for guests in the conservatory which was great. But on the day of his wedding we had a few disappointing moments.
We paid for a package and got 10 family rooms for 1 night as part of the package and these rooms (which cost the same as many of the other guests rooms) were tiny and dark and backed onto a train track so if window open could here trains going past.
The ceremony was lovely, but straight after we went to a small bar whilst waiting for photos and reception. Whilst in the small bar the cleaner started vacuuming around our guests as lots of confetti on floor (obviously asked them to stop until we had gone). It was raining and no where for photos inside. Whilst waiting for reception meal (between 1.30 to 3.30) my guests asked for cocktails but were told no as no one could make them, and we were not allowed in main bar as we were wedding party ?? (lots of trainee staff serving at bar so long waiting times for drinks.
The reception meal was not great. In fact my husband could not eat his.
Overall very disappointing
Luckily we had the most amazing DJ and sax player and had the best night ever (which we organized not the hotel)
The wedding planner was very good and dealt with all of my complaints very well but on the whole I would NOT recommend this place for a wedding
I did not feel the service was worth the money and believe me it was very expensive
