First of all, I have nothing but praise for the staff. They are all very friendly and nothing is too much trouble.
Secondly breakfast is served freshly cooked & arrives hot.
Unfortunately, the room did not live up to standard.
It was above the bar and the "back ground " music was very loud, after a long journey we just wanted to chill out in our room, but the music didn't allow this, I did mention it to a staff member who to be fair did get it turned down a little, but on returning to our room on the following days it was loud once more, Saturday night there was a live band which was even louder, but thankfully stopped playing at 9pm.
The outlook of the room was dire, it over looked the huge kitchen extractor fan, which disturbed our sleep, I am just thankful we didn't need to open the window. You can also hear the early morning staff arrive & then hear the noise from the kitchen.
The room itself is tired & needs an update. Apparently, a refurb is due in January. But nothing can be done about the view or noise.
We paid extra for this room as it's a "suite," which basically means it's larger than the other rooms. The bathroom is large with a jacuzzi bath, a large walk-in showe, and a bidet (very retro!
We only booked this room as it was the last one available due to Durham's Lumiere weekend, which we didn't know about, we were visiting family & the
hotel was closest to where they live.
I would definitely book again next time we visit, but definitely not room 53 despite the upcoming refurbishment.!

Dear Pbf22 Thank you for taking the time to write your review. Thank you for recognising and praising our team, we certainly pride ourselves on the service which we give here at the Honest Lawyer. Our breakfast is and will always be served fresh, great news is we have just expanded the breakfast choice and our dinner menu is changing too. My apologies your room was not to your expectations. When you return to visit your family, please call ahead and we will be more than happy to discuss and allocate a room which would be better placed for you. We look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future Regards Tracey

We stayed here as close to family we were visiting and also they welcomed dogs. We were given one of the dog allocated rooms. The hotel has rooms in the hotel itself, but also rooms which are around a courtyard, which you can park your car in a space in front of, so handy when moving in a dog pen and luggage.
The room was spotless, having the sleeping accommodation, a comfortable chair, desk/table with a lamp on, chest of drawers (in which was a hairdryer), on which held a tray with a kettle, mugs and pot with tea/coffee etc., side tables with a lamp on, either side of the beds, an alcove with a luggage rack containing a rail with hangers above. A good sized bathroom, Bath/shower, basin and toilet, towel rail and large mirror, fan activated when you switched on the light, all spotlessly clean.

We had a 2 night stay and can say without reservation that every member of staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a minor issue on arrival as our room was extremely hot, I turned the heating off before going out but when we returned it was still very warm. I contacted reception and was told someone would come to check it. True to their word someone arrived about 3 minutes later. He said the thermostat was busted and immediately offered us another room. Within ten minutes we were settled in a nice cool room. That’s what I call good service. The food in the restaurant is excellent if a little pricey, overall a great little place to stay.

After being recommended this hotel from my parents and family, my husband and I decided to book it as our last night away before the arrival of our baby.
We decided to pay for the four poster room in apposed to the standard double.

I’ll give the hotel praise where it’s due but unfortunately there were a lot of negative points.

The reception area was nice and the guy behind the desk was helpful. We were given room 47.
The corridor was uncomfortably hot, the heat hit you as you walked into it.
The room itself was immediately disappointing. It looked like a budget b&b. There was a four poster bed as advertised but this was covered in dust, cobwebs and was very unsteady - it moved a great deal when just touching a post.

In the bathroom alone there were 5 spiders on the ceiling.
I went to reception and complained about the spiders and the guy quickly came to the room with a hoover. He couldn’t have apologised enough.
I get spiders come indoors this time of year but surely they should have been noticed when the room was cleaned.
On viewing the room further I saw that every surface in the room was very dusty, including the towel rail in the bathroom. This was thick with dust.
The walls were dirty, the carpets were stained.
The free wifi wasn’t in range either.

Once again I went to reception and complained - the same guy was great and gave us a new room key to room 53. We went up and he followed. This room was a vast improvement on the first room. I think we were upgraded.
The guy who helped was very polite.

We settled into the new room and found there was still dust on all surfaces although not as much/bad as the first room.
The air conditioning on the ceiling didn’t work.
The biscuits given with tea/coffee were 3 months out of date.

All of the issues (except the wifi) seemed to be a house keeping problem in stead of a management problem. Although I’d expect the rooms to have been inspected before guests check into them.

I didn’t complain anymore as honestly I felt like a pain doing so.
Yes we were upgraded to a better and bigger room but unfortunately this came with a few faults as stated above.

We would stay again as the service received from the guy at reception was great. We just maybe need to specify a certain room next time!

I only booked for one night to see what The Honest Lawyer was like as my daughter is at John Snow College and I usually stay for three nights. The amazing B & B I usually stay at has closed as the owners have retired.

Opening the door to room 13, there was a slightly musty smell, not fresh at all. It was clean enough but there was a pubic hair on the basin (!) and the handle on the bath had black mould on the inside of it. The décor was all rather tired and old. As the room is directly opposite the entrance the traffic could be heard going past and so could anybody walking and talking outside the door.

Anyway, it was warm and comfortable enough and I had a decent night's sleep. I was looking forward to the "sumptuous breakfast" as quoted on their website.

No! For my £11.95 I had one piece of toast with marmalade & butter. One glass of extremely cheap orange juice, a small bowl of economy, tinned grapefruit, a pot of tea and a yoghurt. No sign of any fresh croissants for example, they were available but served fresh in a packet!

What a ripoff, £11.95 is expensive for any breakfast, especially in an average hotel, but to economise by using such cheap products is a disgrace.

Not everyone wants, or indeed, can eat a cooked breakfast early in the morning.

Never again at The Honest Lawyer.

I booked my parents a courtyard room as a gift for their 65th Wedding Anniversary. The room was just what they needed with them having mobility issues. The room was clean and comfortable. Unfortunately they are the only positive comments I can make about the whole experience. The plug in the handbasin was stuck and dad had to remove it with a nail file before they could wash. I paid extra for breakfast and sincerely wished I hadn't bothered. The options were cereal which to be fair wasn't to my parents taste. They were told the other option was a bacon sandwich which when it was served was bread with no sign of any butter or sauce and a cold leathery piece of bacon. I understand that there are problems at the mo but I'm sure someone in the kitchen could have cooked the bacon until it was at least hot!. On the website the ad offers continental or full cooked English breakfast. It's a pity no one told the staff. I did email the hotel before I left this review but had no reply or apology. Very dissapointing service. We won't be booking again

We were fascinated when we realised the rooms are set out American Motel style around the car park.

The room was a good size with a double bed, chest of drawers, 2 bedside tables, a dressing table, clothes hanging rail and a wall mounted t v. The bathroom had the usual amenities. There was also a kettle with a range of teas and coffees.

We had our evening meal in the hotel and the staff went out of their way to facilitate my need to not sit near any windows due to my being uv sensitive. The menu was not extensive but the food was reasonably priced and of a good quality.

We had our breakfast in the hotel and there was a good selection of cereals, fruit juices, fruit and yogurts. The 1st morning, the waitress took our order for our cooked breakfast but the 2nd morning, it was serve yourself which we found much better

I would recommend this hotel.

I always stay at this hotel when in Durham, and have never had a complaint before.
I Stayed 2 nights B&B ,I wished I had not botherred with Breakfast, I must mention I was traveling with my Mam who is 95 and does not eat much . The first morning we came to Breakfast my Mam wanted cereal and scrambled egg on toast ,No she could not have that It was full english or Continental of which included cereal .I thought that was strange 2nd morning no cereal but egg on toast go figure. I suppose i should of complained when i was there. My complaint is I wish they had told me about the breakfast because i would not of paid that price for Ltd items and they should forewarn people . A minor winge but feel better for saying it

With a choice of excellent pub restaurants in the area, we visited for a meal thinking the Honest Lawyer had undergone a refurbishment and would offer something similar or better.

Whilst the outside has been painted blue and looks sharp/catches the eye from the road, inside the restaurant and bar appear very run down and dated (and in need of a clean and refurb).

The food was underwhelming. I would say what we ordered was greasy and not particularly appetising presentation-wise (especially for the price range of the dishes).

Service was prompt and not too intrusive, but their attire is also rather dated and needs modernising.

I think with further refurb and attention to detail with respect to the staff and the food/presentation of the food it would be worthy of a visit, but we wouldn’t rush back given the other options elsewhere in the area.

Whilst the worked out the front has been started, unfortunatly the inside work has been held back due to things out of our control. Hopefully the work will progress in the new year. Please do keep watch for updates on our facebook page. I will also pass the review on to the kitchen. Stayed for a night in one of the better rooms in the main building. Carpet needed refurbishing but otherwise comfortable and clean. Quite spacious. Unfortunately the hot water died in the evening, and not knowing when it could be fixed, the staff moved us to another (smaller) room. They were apologetic.

The courtyard room was fine, but didn't match the space we had earlier.

We found out afterwards that the water was fixed later the same evening. By way of compensation, the staff gave us breakfast for free.

It's not a bad place. It was just a pity the water problem affected our experience.
