Pine Marten By Marston's Inns is often celebrated for its professional service and cleanliness, with guests frequently lauding the spotless rooms that enhance the comfort of their stay. While the hotel's tranquil atmosphere and modern amenities are appreciated, some visitors have noted the rooms could benefit from updates and the hotel isn't suited for canine companions.
Despite occasional organizational and Wi-Fi glitches, the serene setting makes it a favorite for dining and drinks. However, opinions on value vary, with food prices and pet amenities sometimes seen as reasonable, yet others have found better options elsewhere.

Detailed Reviews
My wife and I spent Friday night and Saturday night (this weekend) here. Both of us have mobility issues so the manager on duty (Ewan, I believe) switched us to a ground floor accessible room. The room was very clean but basic and none the worse for that. Dinner was standard pub grub but done very well. Thank you, Dana for exemplary service. Breakfast was good too.
The only problem was the shower. Being an accessible room we had a wet room with shower running direct from the water tanks rather than an over bath shower. On the Saturday morning we got up a wee bit later than usual and found that shower only produced a mere dribble of water. We reported this to the restaurant manager (Hayleigh) who promised to get the cleaning team to look at the problem. This morning (Sunday) about 0800h, my wife had a full strength shower and was delighted. My turn and the shower was down to drip strength again. It seems that all of the other guests at the hotel were bathing at the same time and there was not enough water pressure to go round. Reported it again to Hayleigh. Her team had looked into our room after we had left (lots of our fellow guests were going to the same function and had left too) and they did not find a problem with the shower.
Hayleigh explained this to us. That’s fine. We have had that experience before in really high end cost hotels and all credit to Hayleigh for listening and explaining.
I would have given the hotel the full five stars had it not been for the shower. As it is Hayleigh is an absolute star and Ewan and Dana are not far behind.
Dunbar is a lovely wee town and we will probably return. Only thing is, although the hotel bar/restaurant is dog friendly the hotel bedrooms are not. Pity because the area has great dog walking opportunities and if the hotel was dog friendly I am sure there would be lots more people visiting.
One other thing: the beer was Marston’s rather than Belhaven - the local brewery. Perhaps not surprising as it was a Marstons’ establishment. I had a few points over the weekend of their IPA (Hobgoblin) and it was very nice but maybe a wee nod (one brew?) to acknowledge Belhaven would have been diplomatic.
I hope this review is useful.

Hotel's Favourite
We stopped here for lunch en route to Scotland on 16 Aug 2022. The Pine Marten is part of the Marstons group. We have dined at other Marston’s places, so we kind of knew what kind of food to expect, and we weren’t disappointed. The food was piping hot, delicious and served very quickly. The staff were very attentive and made us feel very welcome. Would definitely return.

During my recent stay at Pine Martin in Dunbar, Scotland, I was pleasantly surprised by the seamless check-in process and the peaceful atmosphere that greeted me upon arrival. The hotel, smartly positioned away from the adjacent pub, ensured a tranquil retreat from social activities, providing the quietude I greatly appreciated.
The room, although not the most spacious, struck a perfect balance with its size and modern amenities. It was equipped with a nice bathroom and a comfortable bath, adding a touch of luxury to my stay. The presence of Asda directly across the road was a highlight, offering the convenience of easily accessible shopping for any necessities or snacks.
There wasn’t anything to fault with Pine Martin; it lived up to the expectations set by previous reviews. To sum it up, Pine Martin stands out as a good option for anyone looking for a hotel in the Dunbar area, combining comfort with the convenience of location.

Check in noted as 14:00, we arrived at 16:30 after a 6 hour trip with our 5 year old. We were looking forward to getting into the room and relaxing. We collected our room card from the adjacent building (pub/restaurant) and carried our luggage upstairs to the room. As we got to our room we noticed the door open, no staff present and the room was not cleaned and ready. My partner called back to the pub to inform the staff, who said they would text the cleaners. 5 to 10 minutes later the cleaners arrived and said it would take 10 to 15 mins. We thought we would call to the pub and have tea early. As we were sat I spoke to a member of staff explaining our frustration and we were greeted with a "well we have 27 rooms and only 2 staff". I explained that we arrived 2 and a half hours after the stated xheck in time. We had no apology and so decided to have tea at McDonalds which was not the plan for the evening.
£107 for 1 night with terrible customer service.

Stayed here last night. Booked for evening meal decided to cancel due to really bad weather. Went to reception to cancel and had to stand outside in the pouring rain due to checking diners in. Eventually gave up and returned to my room as incidentally we only had 1 key which operated the electricity so had left hubby in the dark to allow me to exit the room and re enter. Breakfast this morning blaster. Tea pot full of floaters and lemon pips, when we spoke to staff tea pot exchanged but original half full tea cups left. Veggie breakfast no veggie sausages. No offer for f continental which was in the price eventually asked and were offered there flavours of yoghurt and apples. Breakfast worst ever all put in to a frier and was like having a chip shop dinner for breakfast. Absolutely the worst breakfast ever. Did not complain due to lack of privacy as the diner was very quiet and did not want to draw attention. Oh wanted more orange juice which has to be served in 6 small glasses as they had no tall glasses available.

Was very disappointed in my recent short stay here.
On arrival, key for room was not ready despite arriving later than we had stated.
Once in room settling in , a couple of other guests then walked into our room - not at all ideal under current circumstances. We were told this should not have happened.
No hot food was available due to break down of extractor system in kitchen. We were not informed of this before making our journey. Had we been informed of this it may have changed our decision of course. We were offered free breakfast during our 2 night stay which comprised of 2 slices of toast , a croissant and cup of tea - fair enough. However, on 2nd day when arriving for breakfast we were told that extractor fan was now fixed so “ are you having a cooked breakfast ? “ was the attitude of staff. When we asked how we were supposed to have known that, the attitude of staff was very poor.
Not any fault of the inn but we were also awoken in early hours of first nights stay due to the fire alarm going off. We had to stay outside the building without any explanation or apology from staff on site. We were then allowed back in building before arrival of fire brigade.
Back to our room, it was clean and comfortable thankfully but our keycard had to be reset several times - very inconvenient.
Customer service attitude really let this place down. I will not be back.

I can honestly say I’ve never had tastier chicken. We were so impressed by the service and the food, everything was perfect. The icing on the cake, so to speak, was the birthday cards dotted around on seats. My daughter handed one to the staff member serving us and he explained they were intended for people who had missed birthday celebrations due to lockdown. She then handed it to my son as he had just celebrated becoming a Quaranteen (13). A 10/10 experience. Thank you.

I stayed here with 3 old pals for 3 nights, whilst exploring the local golf courses (and a few of the pubs naturally). I arrived mid-afternoon and was quickly checked in (over in the bar/restaurant) by the manager, a lovely young lady who got me sorted out with a quiet place to work whilst I waited for the rest of the lads to arrive. I grabbed a beer and cracked on, and 50-70Mbs internet certainly helped out.
When the rest of the lads checked in we decided to eat in the Pine Marten the first night as we'd all travelled quite a way, and once again the manager was on hand, along with her staff to make sure we were all sorted out, and she even got one of the local lads to call us a cab for when we finished dinner (mostly steaks all were cooked perfectly and really tasty) and fancied a few beers in town (we bought him a pint to say thanks).
The rooms were clean and comfy, the shower was good, and we got a good night's sleep (probably partially due to the 75%ABV "tiki fire" rum we found in the Volunteer pub that night! Breakfast was great, I've seen people moaning about instant coffee, but all you have to do is ask the front of house staff (another super-friendly and helpful young lady) and you'll get a proper flat white or cappucino, just ask nicely and don't be a d*ck about it.
After a tough day on the course, back to get changed and a couple of beers in the Pine Marten before hitting the town for dinner. Lo and behold, our favourite manager was on hand again, giving us a few ideas of places to try (it can be tricky as many seemed to be closed on certain days midweek).
Rinse and repeat (minus the tiki fire) and before we knew it we were on our last (massive) breakfast, and saying a fond farewell to the breakfast team (chef always made an appearance to say hi, quality chap) and we were on our way, sure to return next time we're in the area.
Overall a great spot, can't fault the food or drink, prices were very reasonable, and the staff were really friendly and welcoming and always up for a laugh (or at least they were good at pretending we weren't being annoying).

This is the 3rd time we have stayed at this hotel when visiting Dunbar. Again I have no complaints about the cleanliness and facilities of the room. We had a meal in the restaurant for the 2 nights we stayed and the food was very enjoyable and reasonably priced. The staff are very professional and friendly. For what we paid this hotel is good value for money. We will be back.

We live locally and had a "Hello from Pine marten" offer leaflet through the door, with offers for meals. This evening we gave it another shot after a long absence, and were disappointed yet again with the meal provided. A goat's cheese lasagne and rotisserie chicken were ordered. The chicken was not available, so chicken pie was ordered instead. The lasagne came with "salad" which turned out to be a few varieties of lettuce and nothing else. The pie tasted ok but was clearly mass produced. The mashed potatoes had a crust before reaching the table, and the cabbage seemed to have avoided several minutes cooking. I didn't tempt fate with the gravy.. Won't be rushing back.

Yes it is, they have water bowls and dog biscuits there too.
There are buses which run into Edinburgh and take about 1 hour. We are also about a 10 minute walk to the railway station and the journey takes 30 minutes. If the weather is bad, you could get a taxi from the Pine Marten to the station - cost is approximately £3. Trains run roughly every hour but you could check on the internet for both train and bus times and frequencies.
Kind regards.
