The Sefton Hotel garners mixed reviews, with its prime location being a highlight for many guests, while value for money raises concerns due to perceived poor quality and service. While the cleanliness generally meets expectations, opinions on the atmosphere and rooms are divided; some guests appreciate the spacious, clean accommodations, but others are disappointed by the dated decor and lack of ventilation. Service is often commended for staff friendliness, though inconsistency is noted. Amenities like the pool and gym are well-received, adding to the hotel's appeal.

OK so reading some of the other reviews we wondered what we were going to. We booked an Atrium room in this 4 star hotel. The room was an excellent size really large. All the facilities you needed except aircon. There was a large electric fan that we used and it did keep the room cool enough for us. We stayed 4 nights. The room had large folding doors that opened up onto a balcony which over looked the Atrium garden and fish pond. It made it feel like we were abroad. Really lovely and worth the extra 40 pounds we paid. The room had an enormous bed, fridge, kettle iron etc in. The bathroom had a bath with a hand held shower over and a tiny shower cubicle. It was clean and had toilettries etc. There were a couple of points to make, there are no plugs by the bed so charging at night you had to leave things plugged in across the other side of the room but no biggie. Also there was no extractor fan in the shower/bathroom. The shower curtain was a little stale smelling and it did stick to you when you used it as the cubicle was so small. Breakfast- this was great. Cereal, continental choices fruit yogurt, cold meat and cheese a toaster that actually toasted the bread with one trip through ( this you can tell was a highlight) Hot breakfast was help yourself to Bacon (really thick lean) Sausage that must have been 80% meat, fried bread, hash browns, mushrooms, tomato, beans, and fried or scrambled egg, I had poached eggs a couple of days which were freshly cooked for me and really fresh eggs. There were also croissants and danish pastries jam and honey if you had room too. All the staff at breakfast were exceptionally friendly and helpful also. The coffee machine didn't suit me, I wasnt keen but you could have latte etc. The hotel is right on the front at Douglas just a short walk from the sea terminal. There was a restaurant for lunch dinner etc and a bar but we didn't use either. The swimming pool we used twice. It has changing facilities but I couldn't get the shower to work in the ladies changing room not sure if I was doing something wrong. There was a very large hot tub area that wasn't in use just held a flower display. The pool itself was tiny and because of the shape of it you couldn't really swim. It only had a foot of it that was 1.5m up the middle and the rest was slanted sides but it was a nice refreshing temperature and something you didn't have in other hotels nearby. We would stay again it was reasonable and the breakfast was very good. All in all a lovely stay.

My colleague and I were recommended this hotel and booked it on the day of our arrival in the Isle of Man.

I have read the previous reviews and, yes, it could do with some updating but if this place had a full corporate makeover it would lose a lot of its charm. The room was large, with a sofa, fridge, iron and TV (Although I did have to move this from the stand as it would not have been completely visible from the bed). It had a balcony looking into the atrium. The bathroom had a bath and separate shower, with toiletries provided.

We utilised the pool, which was a bit cold compared to most hotel pools and unfortunately the sauna and steam were closed but this was probably due to it being a quiet time of year.

We did not eat in the restaurant but did have a few drinks in the bar. Breakfast was buffet style, I found that the food was warm rather than hot and the bacon was quite poor quality but overall it was acceptable.

Despite these minor points I would definitely return as you get so much for your money.

Service at reception was good most of the time, parking was easy to sort out and pay and our room was comfortable.
We only had housekeeping once during our 4 night stay which I think is a cost cutting thing rather than anything. You can ask for more tea/coffee etc at reception but I think the very minimum should be every other day emptying bins and restocking rooms. Towel/bed linen change every 3-4 days is fine with me.
Slightly tired hotel in places but comfortable and quiet. Great location right on the front and few minutes walk to the end of the horse drawn tram which ends now at Villa Marina and not the ferry terminal unfortunately. Its about a mile walk to Derby Castle for the tram exchange but only about 10-15min to the ferry terminal.
The shops and town are only a few mins walk away.
Shame the hotel doesn't currently do food in the adjacent 'Norman's Bar' and wished we'd been told this on arrival. We didn't go to the hotel asian restaurant.
Breakfast was great and there was a very good selection of both continental and cooked items. They do take away the cooked section promptly at 10am! You can ask for (very nice) porridge and a manx kippers.
Their is a very small pool and small gym onsite which I didn't realise until we arrived.
All in all a very comfortable stay and in a great location for us for exploring Douglas in and IOM.

The location was brilliant a 10min walk from ferry terminal and the main shopping street was adjacent to the hotel. It is a beach front location the front of the hotel faces the promenade which had beautiful views across the sea from the breakfast room.
The hotel was clean (there was always cleaning staff visible) you could request your room be cleaned as little or as often as you liked. All staff helpful and friendly.
The Atrium rooms were spacious with there own indoor balcony and a sofa in the room, the beds were comfortable with a choice of pillow firmness.
The on site restaurant made lovely meals and fitted us in without a booking on the day we arrived despite them being busy. The facilities were impressive and the price was very reasonable.
A couple of minor things which could be improved were trees/plants in the Atrium and on balconies needed better care a lot were drooping and looked like they needed watering.
There was some wear and tear on stairway carpets. The rooms were very hot on a nighttime so we had to have a fan on and most people left balcony doors open.
None of these things spoilt our enjoyment though and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a reasonably priced, good quality hotel in Douglas.

What a fantastic hotel! Unbelievable value. We always love a sea view but decided to risk an Atrium Double (room 273) overlooking the water garden and were so pleased that we did. The room was very spacious with a king size bed, a settee and chairs on the absolutely gorgeous balcony. It was so relaxing sitting out there with the complementary prosecco on arrival; I understand a refurbishment of these rooms is about to happen but honestly, all I would change are the club chairs which have seen better days from a saggy point of view.
The bathroom, with a separate shower, was spacious and we loved the half wooden floor and French Doors in the room itself. It was all a wonderful surprise as we were paying £80 per night, including breakfast, also excellent ( sausages could be better, but really?!!) and truly lovely, friendly staff throughout. A real gem and we are definitely returning.
The location is ideal; the bus from the airport stops outside and the ferry terminal is nearby.
The only downside is that there is no 'traditional' restaurant where you can eat in the evening. The Harris Restaurant, for breakfast, is lovely but Sir Norman's Bar has a very limited menu and the Asian restaurant on site is ok for one night but we enjoy eating in our hotel and had to try and find somewhere locally.
This is a fantastic hotel, though; it was very peaceful although you did get some late night revellers returning, probably due to the cost but it must be the best value hotel in the UK. It was fabulous. Loved it. Thank you.

The Sefton Hotel is set in a beautiful Victorian building on the promenade not far from the Ferry Terminal in Douglas. On arrival we were met by a lady on the desk who was pleasant and very helpful. Throughout our stay ladies and gents on the desk were very helpful and pleasant at all times and couldn't do enough for us. We stayed in one of the Atrium rooms. The bathroom was very spacious and spotless with a separate shower and a bath with a shower. I love a relaxing bath after a long day walking. The bedroom again was spacious with everything you need during your stay. The bed was very comfy with fresh, crisp cotton clean sheets. Plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. Ironing board complete with iron and hairdryer. Complimentary teas and coffees, which were replenished daily. The terrace looked over the atrium garden which was lit up at night time and very pretty. Breakfast was buffet style with a variety of foods to suit everyone's palate and the food was freshly cooked and plentiful. The ladies in the Breakfast Room were very welcoming and pleasant. My partner requested a poached egg which was cooked freshly and served quickly. We enjoyed an evening meal in the Harbour Lights. Best fish n chips ever. Again staff were lovely and friendly. We even managed a relaxing swim in the pool at the end of a perfect day. This was my first visit to the Isle of Man. I look forward to returning to the Sefton. Pleasant staff made our stay more enjoyable.

I am sure there are some rooms in this hotel which are nice, but mine is Terrible. I am here for another night on business and cannot wait to leave.

My room has no natural light or air. I have a balcony which opens onto an atrium full of dying plants. The whole atmosphere is creepy and the light levels are so low that it is difficult to see anything.

The glass flimsy patio doors have to be closed at night for my safety and so there is no air at all. The heat is Unbearable. I am also concerned about my security as there are adjacent rooms which would have access to my room via the balcon.

I asked for a room change on day 1 but was told that there were no other rooms avaible as all those guests at the front of the hotel were being moved into atrium rooms due to the pneumatic drill activity due overnight. I will leave you to decide if that is the truth.

Do not stay here unless you can pay for the more expensive rooms. I will never stay here again. I have read that the hotel is being refurbished but there are no signs of that.

Dear jeaniefish, Thank you for leaving your feedback on TripAdvisor. My apologies in regards to your bedroom, we couldn't move you to a Seaview duo to the works and noise on the promenade during the night, all the guests where moved into the Atrium only for 1 night. In relation to the balcony no bedrooms have access to any bedrooms, our Duty manager was in your bedroom when you where present and he made sure the balcony doors where closed. Thank you for staying at the Sefton. Kindest Regards, David Codinha Deputy General Manager

Good location and iconic looking but the interior is worn and shoddy the dirt in the atrium was like a building site so much so that if you have plant or dust allergies I would say this place is off limits. The atrium roof doesn’t vent any heat that builds and the blinds are broken so the humidity and heat builds and can make the rooms uncomfortable. Rooms so dark, no natural lighting, so was like a cave, had to use lights all the time to see in the room. Breakfast was poor and lukewarm and the coffee machine was making bitter coffee so not really worth it as the café next door is a better way to go. With all the different bars in and around the town and promenade the hotel at is a poor choice high prices and just not as good as the other places on offer. We paid £680 for 3 nights so would expect good quality, a Travel lodge provides better quality !!! The positive if you can call it one is it is very retro like late 60,s early 70,s unfortunately that also means no AC

It's a real shame that the owners have let this hotel go this way. The rooms and general areas are in desperate need of renovation. Room was unbearably hot, with no way to control the temperature. Bizarrely, staff were turning guests away from the bar, despite there being plenty of seating unoccupied and the hotel being busy with visitors for the festival of motoring. The pool is its saving grace, but even there, the sauna, spa and hot-tub are all closed with no explanation. Obviously the promenade works and covid have had an impact, but for the premium money, the Sefton currently offers sub-standard service. You'd be better off at the Premier Inn.

We stayed for four days in an atrium room which was clean, very spacious and warm. There was lots of cupboard and drawer space for clothes. The furniture in the room was very comfortable and it was very pleasant to be able to sit on the balcony in November looking out onto the atrium with a cup of tea or in the room on the sofa watching TV.
The manager and staff were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was excellent. There was always a good selection of traditional British food as well as continental. The fried eggs were always perfect.
The location was great for us as my wife can't walk far and the main shopping street is only yards away, as are several bars and restaurants. The Manx museum is only a short stroll away too.
We used the swimming pool once and had it to ourselves for a couple of hours. It was very pleasant. A maximum of six are allowed, but there were only two of us.
The wifi was faulty in our room but the manager moved us to another room where it was fine. It was no trouble really. We had a bit of uncertainty over the availability of car parking but it was only very busy in the car park on Saturday.
All in all a very pleasant stay.

They provide towels but not robes. You need to go to reception to book to use the pool. There are changing rooms in the pool area. Hope this is helpful.

You can get a sefton card parking card if you speak to the receptionist about parking and you display it in your window screen and you pay when you check out of the hotel however if there is unavailable parking as the spaces are pretty much always full the staff are super helpful in trying to help you out!

Good bus service from airport into Douglas. Certain buses go through Douglas and on to Onchan which will drop you right outside the hotel. My guess is a taxi will be £25 - £30.
