My wife booked this hotel since it was the main hotel in the area. The hotel itself is quite an impressive structure, and I'm sure it used to be very popular back in the day but it does have a slightly stale feel about it now. A few of the rooms had chairs all stacked up and carpet rolled up. If that's how they are in August in peak season, are they used at all? Seems like a waste of good space to me.

I don't like to unnecessarily criticise a British hotel trying to make ends meet and Sandown itself has issues with a number of empty and dilapidated shops on the high street, but there are a few small things they could do to make it better.

We opted not to do the meal package which was extra, but when you do that you then have no other options for food. Surely they are missing a trick here. Why not offer a small bar menu? I would have come down to the main lounge area for a croissant and coffee and paid 5-6 pounds. If not then why not have vending machines. Perhaps this is seen as too downmarket an idea, but lets be honest, there is a pool table in the bar/lounge area and games machine so i don't think that would be too far fetched. Plus apart from paying £4 for 2 small bottles of water at the bar one evening, i ended up going to the local supermarket to brings snacks and drinks tot he room...surely this is not something the hotel wants it's guests to be doing, what a wasted opportunity.

On the Friday night being on the 3rd floor, it was incredibly noisy on the street below and in rooms nearby. Luckily this tailed off just after midnight, and there isn't a great deal the hotel can do about this. I echo some of the other reviews when our rooms were hardly touched during the stay. When we rang reception to say that the beds hadn't been made, we were told that it was probably because we were in the room when they came around. However it was clear they had been to the room when we were out because the 'make our room' sign had been removed for our door and placed back in our room. Again any changes due to Covid should have been clear. The rooms were old fashioned but i don't have any complaints as such, in fact i was surprised by how many plug sockets there were which was good and free WIFI worked well. the bathroom was nicely updated. The hotel has a good location by the beach and we were able to get to anywhere on the Island pretty quickly and easily.

when we left we accidentally left two iPhone/ipad chargers in the room. I emailed and called to retrieve them but had no reply from the Hotel. Which is disappointing to say the least.

Unfortunately I wouldn't stay in the hotel again, despite it's size i don't think it offers anything more than a good B&B would offer in the local area. I think they need to have a think about how they can add a bit of a personal touch to the hotel. Sometimes small things like a chocolate on a pillow, or water in the room, can make a big difference. It is a great building which harks back to an age where the great british seaside was the go to holiday, but now with a Premier Inn opening just 100 metres away I think they need to make some changes.

This place could be amazing. It has a beautiful lounge and bar, a stunning restaurant overlooking the bay and lovely family rooms over looking the beach.

They also have some great staff. Clean white uniforms and they're taking covid very seriously.

We had a drink in the bar every night and the young man behind the bar could not do enough for us. And when he wasn't doing anything he was wiping down all the surfaces with disenfectant, wiping down handrails and making sure the place was spotless.

Our maid was fantastic. Kept the room lovely and chased me to the car to give me my phone charger.

So what's not so good? The restaurant menu is terrible. Brocoli and Cheese pasta, Hake and Roast Pork and no kids menu. No chips. Which means no good for my kids.

The rooms need a makeover. Old and tired.

The place is family run and you get the feeling they have a very officious management style. The people in charge always know best and don't listen to what the staff are feeding back to them or what reviewers like me write.

The current covid offer at the Sandringham was half board for 'covid safety reasons'. So no bed and breakfast. They only had 40 people staying there when we were there. Why? The restaurant is massive even with a reduced seating capacity you could get 80 in there and keep everything covid safe.

They're refurbing and putting in a Premier Inn on the Esplanade. And I fear that's going to hit the Sandringham hard. The place is old school but they're not playing to their strengths.

Do up the rooms.
Get a decent chef.
Have a kids menu. (Pizza, Chicken Nuggets, Cheese Burger - done)
Put on some background music at the bar.

But most of all listen to feedback.

It's a beautiful hotel in a great location. We want it to succeed.

I wish I'd read some of these reviews first........The Sandringham has a great location, and Sandown has the most wonderful sandy beach right opposite..and we had a sea view room, I would have been pretty grumpy without that! I dread to think what one of the back rooms is like...but our room was OK I suppose, clean, shower room fine, but furniture and decs looking old fashioned and tired (dark brown wood) and please get some larger firmer pillows! Only fair value for money bearing in mind we could have probably flown to Spain or Greece for a week with what we paid for 4 nights here plus ferry cost and fuel. Shame, it could be really stunning.

When paying £900 for a family room for 4 nights half board, I expect more than what we got. The reception area, dining room and bar are all reasonably well kept, apart from a chandelier falling from the ceiling in the dining room on our last night!

Our room was in the basement and was dark and very damp. Rolled up carpet outside in the hall and we had to request a light bulb for the room. There was bird mess on the inside of the window, which we reported, but this was never cleaned up. A smell of urine was apparent in the bathroom, not helped by having carpet in there. The place is run down and for the money they charge, they really need to up their game.

High chair had old dried on food and there is no children’s menu either. Grilled fish or meat served with roast potatoes and veg every night. Not much variation. Items listed on the breakfast menu ran out on our first morning and not replenished for the duration of our stay. Prosecco ran out on the first night and again, not replenished. Dead flies floating in one of the drinks ordered from the bar also.

Whilst we appreciate the hotel had been shut for a number of months due to COVID-19, this hotel is falling short on basic things. From speaking to other guests in the hotel, it became apparent that it wasn’t only us who were unimpressed.

We had a lovely server in the dining room, but other staff were unhelpful and one on front of house was just rude.

Sandown is really rundown and we certainly won’t be heading back to the hotel.

Following a recent stay at the hotel I would like to point out some observations. The hotel has a good position on the beach but sadly that is possibly the only good thing I can say about it.
Having stayed in many hotels in England, Ireland and the continent this hotel is most likely the worst.
The bedroom was never cleaned in our six-day stay; every day we returned to the bed in the same state that we had left it, and so it was clearly never made.

The mattress was very uncomfortable and only a duvet was provided, which is ridiculous in the summer.
The room was small and noisy from the external traffic in the street outside.

When reporting any problem with services in this hotel, or even just asking very general questions at reception, a particular staff member was difficult and very rude. Both verbally and in her body language. She was just so disagreeable and was not at all suitable for everyday contact with customers.

Generally speaking the entire hotel is run down and old fashioned. Both paint work and wallpaper is often shabby and in poor condition and the carpet sometimes threadbare. During one evening meal a large light fitting fell from the ceiling and onto a table near us thankfully without diners present at the time.

I have not commonly taken it upon myself to write reviews on places where I have stayed in the past but this hotel is an exception. I strongly believe that I do not want anyone else to go through the experience of spending their money on this hotel as it is definitely far short of the hotel you may expect from how it reads on their website

This is our second visit to The Sandringham Hotel. Everything about our stay here has been Wonderful. The hotel has a unique, retro quality to it. The check-in process was quick and the staff were very welcoming. Our room was perfect for our needs, and, Wow, what a Fabulous view out to sea from our balcony. The evening meals were delicious and filling, and the breakfast was equally so. We have no complaints whatsoever about this hotel. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable of the island and its amenities. Everything here was delightful. We are now in the process of re-booking for a couple of months time. We highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a hotel that is welcoming, comfortable, one that offers exceptional value for money, one that will not disappoint. We cannot thank the staff enough for everything they did to help us settle in quickly. Happy Times!! Thank You, Sandringham Hotel, Sandown, IOW. :-)

In a stunning location on the seafront. Our room was good as it had a balcony with sea view and was very roomy. The pool was good and appeared clean and we were the only ones using it. The food was average and for some reason you got roast potatoes with every meal even fish. The waiting staff were helpful and friendly. On the negative side, the heating wasnt working and we were cold. The Receptionist told us to pretend it was the 70s and there was no central heating!. The bedlinen was musty and the toilet roll was so thin we had to use serviettes. We tried to order a bottle of wine at dinner but we hadnt taken our cards to dinner so tried to charge it to our room but we weren't allowed to have it unless we could pay on the spot. The hotel had our card details from when we booked so it seemed strange and we couldnt be bothered to go up 3 floors to get a wallet. There are quite a lot of leaks in the property. and damp walls and ceilings. Overall you get the impression that the owners want to squeeze every penny out of their clients and give little in return. It is not cheap to stay there. Its a shame because it could be lovely.

Stayed for 4 nights in August. Hotel looked pleasant enough in the photos but actually seems to be stuck in the 80’s with the decor, furniture and worn carpets. Not good for people with mobility issues as the lift doesn’t actually go down to the ground floor. Had to carry 2 heavy suitcases up 2 flights of stairs first! Once out the lift, it was down a few steps along a very long corridor, through 3 fire exit doors and then up another flight of stairs! Ridiculous!
We booked a family room with a side sea view. Looked like the window hadn’t been cleaned for a year. The room was really hot, no A/C or fan and being on the main road was noisy with window open. Bedroom furniture is very dark brown wood, soft mattresses and pillows (fine if you like metal springs in your back!) Basic tea and coffee making facilities provided and topped up each day. However beds were not made. Room was clean upon arrival. Could hear people walking along the corridor and also the room upstairs’ creaky floorboards. Have to prebook meals prior to staying which is £30 per person for breakfast and main evening meal. We booked this hotel as it has an indoor pool. Unfortunately it is not heated and the sea was actually more pleasant. Most hotels have leaflets etc on the desk regarding sightseeing etc. not this place.
Would I rebook this hotel? No. Would I recommend this hotel? No.
£850 for 4 nights (room only) is a rip off.

I took my wife to the Isle of Wight for the weekend of her 50th birthday; I booked the room directly with the hotel, and it couldn’t have been easier. I had tried to book the ferry over directly with red funnel, but they said nothing available on that day, but the hotel said they could do it and not only could they get us on a ferry it was £100 cheaper than red funnels tariff.
The hotel got us into our room by 1pm, and we were delighted, fantastic views over the whole beach and sea.

We booked the half board option which was a full breakfast and 4 course evening meal, the food was very good and loads of it.

The staff across the whole hotel were excellent, if you wanted a chat you could or they just left you to it.

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

1. When you make a complaint for noise you will struggle to get the night porter on the phone as management is virtually non existent!

2. I have tried to contact the hotel manager today and was told by the lady on reception that she was not allowed to give out the managers name which immediately sounds alarm bells. Then when I asked if she would kindly pass the message on to call me back and was told 'I can leave it in the office but he wont call you back' .....

Substandard rooms, sub standard customer services, sub standard safety with new covid 19 measures and ownus falls to the manager who wont even allow staff to give his name out! Then when I asked what time he would be in I was told 'i dont know he doesnt have set shifts' .... again alarm bells start to sound if the staff dont know when the manager is at work. No wonder the level of customer service is so low.

You still want to stay here? Very best of luck to you.....

Absolute disgrace!

The Swimming Pool temperature is checked everyday. Today it is 28.5 degrees celsius however, the pool room itself is also heated meaning when you enter the waters it does feel cooler that it actually is.
