Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

The hotel is both clean comfortable and inviting. The staff extremely friendly and I've not had any problems with anyone or anything with the hotel. I guess my biggest complaint is that the parking in a little bit difficult sometimes I'm on a motorbike so it shouldn't really be like that. The hotel don't feel a little bit dated even though it has recently been modernised or at least redecorated I just didn't like the Declaration of much maybe that's just my personal taste. There is nothing wrong with this hotel it is a clean hotel with clean bedding obviously no hotel is perfect but I couldn't really pick anything out that was especially bad. No mould on the floor on the ceiling or the walls a nice place to be and I would recommend it despite some of the reviews saying otherwise. This is not a 5-star hotel and as such do not put this photo expecting it as such.

Highly recommended lovely place to stay

Like the other review on this page, staff are OK but can't understand very good English. When asked if the fish had bones in it they had no idea what was being asked.

The hotel is stuck in a time warp, but whilst there it was being painted so a sign of improvment! The carpet in our room was very dirty and needed ripping out, the bathroom was so small it was hard to move around in it.

The food was OK, but on the last night of our stay we eat out as enough was enough.

Not a bad place, the staff do try but could really do better.

We took our recently widowed daughter and her two children there for a week's break. We found the staff very helpful and the food good, although the outside could do with a bit of a make over. The location suited us perfectly and overall good value for money.

The hotel is tired, but the staff have developed a very unhelpful Covid culture, can’t put anything on your room, you have to pre book a breakfast and if you are early or late you are told abruptly. The staff are so unhelpful and if you want to take a glass to your room for a drink you have to justify it... this is my second visit in 12 months and never again... such a shame but I am not paying that sort of money to be dictated to. I can guarantee they will hide behind Covid rules but that is a complete joke compared to other hotels. Terrible culture!

We stayed three nights at this hotel as a pre-Christmas treat - departure day was like getting out of gaol. This hotel is stuck in the 60s. It is English hospitality/catering at its absolute worst. The evening meal is served between 18.30 and 19.30 and breakfast from 08.30 to 09.30. The food is possibly the worst hotel food I have tasted in my life. There was no sign of any members of management during our stay. The staff were friendly, but too friendly and became intrusive. At breakfast there were two waiters - one from Eastern Europe who didn't understand "we would like two fried eggs on toast please". His colleague appeared and shouted across the room "what was it you wanted?". I have never had such a bad experience and would certainly neither return nor recommend anybody to stay at the Sandown Hotel.

I booked this hotel last minute for a night as it was the only hotel which allowed a dog. I had to pay £28 for the dog besides £88/night per room. The lobby and rooms were clean but the room had a musty smell when I first entered it and the pillows smelt.
The receptionist was a young girl Megan was not very welcoming. She took my credit card details when I checked in case we did any damage to the rooms overnight!!!!
Unfortunately my dog ingested too much sea water and accidentally we'ed
on the carpet in the lobby. I apologised profusely for the accident but the receptionist came out and said that they had seen him wee in their CCTV and I had to clean the carpet or pay £25 cleaning charge. Amazing. What was the charge for the dog if it did not include cleaning charge?? I asked her if a guest had been sick on the carpet, would they make the guest clean up their vomit as well?? Astounding customer service. I am a seasoned traveller, I have NEVER experienced such appalling management EVER.
Unless you are desperate, stay away from this place.

Having travelled alone, I was soon feeling most welcome. The staff are fabulous, the food was great, my room was overlooking the beach!!!! I couldn't have asked for more. I had my birthday during my stay, and was made a fuss of. All in all it was such good value for money, and the location of the hotel is ideal. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone, if you're looking forthe "real deal" then this was most definitely it for me. A great big thank you to everyone at the Sandown!!

The staff were lovely i couldnt fault their hospitality, there were 3 members of staff the whole time,no management at all, one barman (great) receptionist (lovely) waiter also nice, the room we were allocated on arrival was quite frankly the worst room ive ever seen, the leaks in the roof, damp walls, curtains falling down and the smell really took my breath away,we asked to be moved and with no bother at all we were given another room, this room was twice the size, still not particularly pleasent but by far better than the first, we had a kettle but no teabags/coffee in the room which is clearly stated that this facilty is topped up each day,no one came into the room to top up anything,in the reception the wallpaper by the bar is held on with cellotape, all the celings have obviously flooded at some point, the dining room was pleasent enough to look at as long as you didnt look at the months of dust and grime settled on the table legs, the food was absolulty dreadfull(apart from the soup) the potatoes were black and solid, and the yorkshires were totaly burnt, you were allocated 2 potatoes only and there was no point going down to breakfast if you were hungry as the so called 'full Einglish' was served to you on nothing bigger than a side plate, i would never recommend this hotel to anyone as the 2 day break cost me £175 which in my opinion was a waste of money because the brohure i recived couldnt be further away from the truth.

The other reviews on this page do not do this hotel justice. We have now visited this hotel 3 times and although the hotels decor maybe dated, don't forget how cheap you got this deal for!!! £80 for 3 nights half bored including your ferry crossing, DO YOU EXPECT THE RITZ?

We have 2 dogs and the hotel staff are always very welcoming. We love the walks along to Shanklin and over the cliffs to Whitecliff bay.

The rooms are very comfortable and clean. The lounge area in the hotel is fantastic with a nice bar, great sea views and good entertainment a couple of times a week. The food is always delicous and hot, what more can you ask for
