The hotel is a traditional style Highland Hotel offering the comfort of a country house but with modern amenities. The hotel was used as a filming location for the BBC Series 'Monarch of the Glen' from 2000 to 2005. The Clan Macpherson Gathering has been held at the Duke of Gordon every August since 1938. The hotel is a popular wedding venue and many family events have taken place in the Ballroom. Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

I have put off writing a negative review on this place, as you can be forgiving of so many things, but being a local and it currently being the only bar in town, our friends and family have to frequent this place. I tried writing to the hotel by email and facebook but have been ignored. I have since written to their Head Office but no reply so feel it necessary to let prospective guests know of our experience. They do serve local real ales, which are great, and they used to have a decent wine list, which included sauvignon blanc, one of the most popular wines. For whatever reason, they have removed sauvignon blanc from their wine list. Worse than this, today, we went down, and asked for sauvignon blanc in case they had got some in, and was told 'no, sorry', on top of this, no chenin blanc, no pinot grigio, one white wine only available by the bottle and the only one by the glass was a spanish white. Other guests were in at the same time and were in total disbelief that a hotel of this size had such a poor offering! I feel so sorry for the bar staff. So, clearly, the hotel don't care about losing revenue in the bar. Such a shame when they have invested in a beautiful bar downstairs, which is barely open, but then, if you don't have the stock, what's the point?! Never mind, potential guests, The Star in Kingussie will be opening later this year, which will include a new bar, and I am in no doubt that the new owners of the Star will make sure they have someone who understands about wine and what people want, and will include sauvignon blanc on their menu!!

Be prepared for a Long coach journey, from Leicester the folks were 13 hours. This could be shortened considerably by having the pickups on the M1 corridor rather than wasting time driving into towns. First night on arrival no time for a shower straight into dinner. This was our 3rd trip and things have deteriorated greatly. Most staff were very friendly and worked hard. Food items ran out... Not enough bread one evening, beans and tomatoes at breakfast... The excursions were good Train journey and Loch boat trip were the making of the holiday. Some rooms have had an upgrade but others can only be described as tired. Our friends room 430 was like something out of Faulty Towers. One curtain was 18" longer than the other, laminate peeling off the wardrobe doors but most concerning the shower head was just black mold. They asked for a room change but we're told the hotel was full (strange as a couple on our bus had cancelled only the day before). Finally, on arrival the hotel lift was broken (these things happen) apparently some guests with mobility issues were not happy and let staff know this, upsetting staff. On return from our bus excursion on our first day we were told after a long trip back to the hotel we needed to stay on the bus. A member of staff who did not identify himself (possibly deputy manager) then gave us all a Telling Off like I've not had since at school!!! With regards to how staff had been treated. The only positive thing about this was we didn't get detention. The Hotel is really struggling to retain previous standards, a shame as the young front of house staff worked hard within obvious restraints.

We stayed here with Cairngorm Travel coach holidays, although we did self drive. We still had reserved seats on the coach for any excursions we wished to do.The hotel was excellent, we had a lovely ground floor room with a very well appointed bathroom.Meals were very good, evening meals very varied , good choices for all four courses.I am gluten intolerant so need to eat a gluten free diet. This was a bit hit and miss with bread and desserts but any problems i had were easily rectified and I really enjoyed my meals.Every night there was entertainment which was good but would have been even better had we had a Scottish night to finish off our last night when a piper piped us into our evening meal. I cannot comment on the excursions as we only did one which was the train journey from Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh. This was brilliant and we were very lucky having excellent weather to enjoy the beautiful views. Our driver Paul was a lovely man, very friendly and helpful. We had a really good holiday at the Duke of Gordon, all the staff from receptionists to waiters/waitresses and cleaners were very pleasant.I would definitely recommend this holiday/hotel.

This the fourth time we've visited this lovely place and our experience has been wonderful as always. Such welcoming and accommodating staff, comfortable rooms, tasty food, and a great selection of drinks. We feel like we've only just scratched the surface of what there is to do in the area, and having the Duke of Gordon as a base from which to explore the Cairngorms and Highlands, is perfect for us. We will be back again!

We have just returned from our 4th visit to the Duke in the past 10 years. As ever, we had a brilliant time - the hotel is super comfortable, the ideal base for exploring everything the Highlands has to offer. Brilliant walks from the door of the hotel, lovely food, comfy rooms and a great welcome! We'll be back :)

Once again the Duke of Gordon has lived up to our expectations. The long drive from Yorkshire was made worth it when we arrived to a warm welcome and a well-stocked bar. There's so much to do in the area with stunning walks straight from the hotel door, and tonnes of family activities within a 20 minute drive. The Reindeer Trek was a particular hit with the opportunity to hand-feed these beautiful creatures, and the top of Cairngorm mountain had a reasonable amount of snow for sledging fun. It's a good job that we were so active during the day because the cooked breakfast was hearty and the four-course dinner was tasty and plentiful. Can't fault the rooms which were clean and seem to have recently been renovated. A decent shower and a comfortable bed is all that we needed to relax and re-energise.

Fantastic place, very welcoming with great staff. Location is great for walking, cycling and snow sports. This is our 3rd stay at the Duke of Gordon and I hope it won’t be our last! Good hearty breakfasts and evening meals and a well stocked bar for post dinner drinks. A great base for adventures!

Great stay with plenty of activities a short drive or some only a walk away. Some lovely authentic Scottish food options on the menu which were great to let the kids have a try of some new thing. Great spirits available in the bar for the adults to try new things too. Will definitely be going back.
