Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

Having been to Trimstone Manor many times before I must gluton fir punishment, but more importantly wanted to give this business the benefit of doubt thinking that it might of improved. Sadly this was not the case, the place looks tired and kept like seaside attraction that has seen better days. Not sure why the owner doesn't just sell tge place and let someone that truly has the passion and focus to run the place properly rather than a after thought or has the capability fir hospitality which this owner truly doesn't for sure which is sad.

The last time I was back at Trimstone Manor was back in January 2023 where I was very disappointed by this shabby venue and thinking of taking friends there at the end of April I thought things might of changed as the holiday season is heading into the spring and the summer just a few months away. Unfortunately I felt embarrassed as the place was still as bad as I had remembered it January, looks down at heal, service not good, take it or leave, and the prices are very high for what you get. These friends said that a place like this should have a greater prominence and it seems the owner or owners don't really care about the place. I always like to give places and venues the benefit of the doubt and unfortunately Trimstone Manor doesn't live upto any expectation and the best thing to the current owner should sell it and let someone with true passion and focus and knows how the tourist sector works. It should be focused on the customer, customer and customer and you can see that the present owners are interested in themselves unfortunately. I would be recommending this sorry venue to anyone... I might get barred but do I really care where is better venue's who really focus on the tourist.

I am afraid you were banned from visiting after your last enquiry which fortunately for us came to nothing. I cannot possibly imagine that you would be planning to return with 'friends' based on your vindictive narrative, one which I am afraid supports our response to your earlier nasty mention. We welcome a better calibre of honest guests here and whose command of English is as accurate as their candid remarks about our beautiful location. I wish you well with your future venue choices but do make sure you show them your comments on here before entering. You may find you are not welcome anywhere else either after that. Yours faithfully Trimstone Manor Team

I visited here with my family including a toddler and would highly recommend. I see a review below has complained about being the only guests, as were we, and although this a shame for the hotel, we actually found this a benefit as we felt we could relax, and it’s evident that with time of year it would be quiet, the local towns were also very quiet with several cafes and shops closed for the winter season, but not an issue if you research first. The hotel is dated, but was very clean and with lots of fabulous features- the gardens are stunning with lots of birds/chickens/peacocks to see- it would be beautiful to see in the summer. The swimming pool (although it closed for low season, again to be expected), was in a lovely building with a fabulous water wheel feature- something the hotel should definitely promote on social media! The games room was great and well equipped! The beds and pillows were very comfy too. We enjoyed breakfast during our stay, and the bar was well stocked- again the review below mentions it wasn’t staffed however we text the number provided and Hazel was there within minutes to assist us with drinks. Hazel was lovely and couldn’t do enough for us, she was great with my little one too. The local towns are within short driving distance making this a great base. We would definitely like to return.

The hotel was clean. Once you've said that you've said it all. No restaurant although we understood there was. No bar open which you would expect there to be in an hotel and most interestingly no people. We only stayed one night instead of the planned two because we actually had been looking forward to an enjoyable stay. E mailed the owner to discuss the balance. He did not reply but took it anyway. Having signs everywhere saying that you could press the buzzer and someone would appear from somewhere is not service. Seeing other responses from the owner he will be quite rude I imagine but I gave him the chance by giving him my phone number.

Dear Sheeplady2016 We are all saddened by the review that you left on Tripadvisor. We removed our restaurant from our website and all the platforms we use 18 months ago when we had to take a decision to close it, so I am not sure why you thought that it was open. When you arrived, we explained that the bar was available at any time of the day and night and if not attended, then to ring the number provided and we would attend to your needs within a minute or two. We offered to serve you from the bar when you arrived but our offer was refused. You were given a list of local restaurants to assist you also. You enjoyed a full and hearty breakfast the following morning and then informed us that you would be leaving immediately as there were no other guests. It is February and known throughout the industry as low season, called so due to the low demand for accommodation. We are but one of many hotels that see very few guests in the low season and we cannot assure any guests of the presence of others – can you imagine the booking conversations! Many close altogether. You were indeed aware of our terms and conditions that clearly state that if you choose to leave before the end of your booked stay, no refund is available to you. However, we contacted you and even offered you a £100 credit note against any subsequent stay. We are indeed very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay but we can hardly be responsible for other guests not wishing to holiday at this time of year. We do all we can to advertise and promote what we are and what we do and at prices reflecting that and cannot be responsible if a guest decides that our offering has not met their needs which vary from that. However, clearly in the future we encourage you to call to enquire of these situations before you book a hotel in a seasonal area in future, to ensure your overall likely needs are met before you book. Philip Milton - Owner

Just to appreciate the lovely team at Trimstone Manor Country house! I stayed for a month and half with my family and enjoyed the quietness of the place. The lovely well furnished self catering cottage gave us a good and comfortable stay in an environment with a lovely garden view and the birds! My kids enjoyed the games room and the place is quite strategic to visiting other sites like the beaches and harbour.

After reading the many reviews I thought trimstone manor would be a treat but the place looks shabby and unloved, reception staff were unhelpful and couldn't be bothered. It is a shame it could be a lovely place to stay but unfortunately it seems that the owners can't be bothered either and I understand that they have run down many establisments, pubs included to try and make either a quick profit or upset the locals or guests combined. This place should be sold to someone who can manage this property properly and focus on the guest and customer service which appear they don't.

We are only an accommodation provider, with breakfast. Sadly this comment reflects the worst in TripAdvisor with unregulated, anonymous, defamatory comment from someone who has never stayed here nor who never would. We are open only to the odd guest at this time of the year. We have had two sets of great guests this month. People just down the road in our local town of Barnstaple from where this reviewer comes wouldn't stay here. It is probably some local competitor envious of our success and keen to besmirch us. It has really upset the staff here who are great, hard-working and very welcoming. Their only consolation is that people like this will never come here - because they would be barred anyway. We have never acquired any operating pubs incidentally - another lie. We have never 'run-down' any businesses. However, we do own a lovely, superbly maintained restaurant in Barnstaple which we established from scratch up for rent. It closed sadly when the tenant left as a consequence of the Pandemic. We have also opened a brand-new pub from scratch and it is thriving. It is doing so on the back of great investment and super customer service - just like my main business has enjoyed for nearly four decades.

Followed a sign for "cream teas". Wasn't sure what to expect whilst following the tiny country lane to get there. We was greeted by lovely, friendly staff, who brought us our cream teas. Well, the scones were massive and warm from the oven. We had a walk around the grounds, which were absolutely beautiful. On top of the lovely food and service, the birds really put a smile on out faces, especially the two emus and the "ducks with wigs". After our visit on Wednesday, we came back the following day with the rest of the family, who were just as impressed as us! We are looking forward to returning next year.

We enjoyed our 2 day break here. ‘ East down’ room was very nice, with big windows over looking impressive gardens and a very comfortable 4 poster bed. The swimming pool was exceptional. Warm water, clean and very quiet when we were there! The menagerie of birds were entertaining. Hotel is also in a great location for exploring North Devon.
