Reception, bar, lounge and dining room are lovely but it's fair to say say the rest of hotel is dated and a bit shabby, however the white towels and bedding are spotless and the staff are the most friendliest ever, I definitely would stay again

We stayed for 2 nights over Easter. Lovely hotel. Bedroom was clean with a really comfortable bed and bouncy pillows. The view was outstanding, looking out directly over the beach. The breakfast was good with lots of variety. The bar area is beautiful and so welcoming with the warm fairy lights everywhere. The staff were lovely. The internet was very intermittent and with an 11yr old internet mad child it was something that was fairly important for us. The two girls on reception/on the bar went out of their way to sort it for us and were always smiling and happy. Only one lady called Chris let the team down but I’m not letting that bring down the hard work of all the other lovely staff.

Avoid this hotel if you have a food allergy,or poor mobility even on first floor you have to walk 18 steps. Staff friendly manager very rude. Dining room staff outside front door having a cigarette with tea towel over shoulder then brings your food using the tea towel to serve your food.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Booked this hotel for a New Year break with 5 other family members, one of whom had a severe nut allergy. First thing we noticed after being given our room keys was the vast difference between the decor/standard of areas between the public entrance level where guests can walk in to eat/drink and the areas/rooms paying guests are shown to. The condition of the three rooms we were allocated were of a very poor standard with floors not being straight, furniture propped up to accommodate the varient, bathroom areas carpeted and dirty with a crack and chip out of the pink sink in one room and windows full of old paint resulting in not being able to opened. We booked to eat at the hotel the first evening and arranged with four other friends to eat with us. We were seated and given menus, my nephew made the waitress aware of his nut allergy and enquired about the dish he wanted to order. The waitress was very rude and commented 'there's always one' and refused to let him look at the allergen list, told him he could only have chicken or steak then served his steak with a pot of peppercorn sauce next to it on his plate and told him she didn't know if it contained nuts or not!!! The waitress was very rude whilst serving us, using bad language and complaining that it would be midnight by the time she got home. Every time she came to the table she smelt strongly of cigarette smoke and was seen stood outside the hotel smoking with a tea towel thrown over her shoulder, this tea towel was then used when she brought food to our table. When it was time to pay the bill she made two of our friends feel uncomfortable because they asked to pay their bill separately. The following morning we had to go down to the basement breakfast room to order breakfast. My nephew could not even stay in the breakfast room as there was a nut loaf uncovered on the table, only one serving tong to put bread through the toaster with this tong being used to put the nut loaf through the toaster. This was not only very disappointing for my nephew as he had to leave the room but also could have been life threatening if he hadn't witnessed the nut bread being put through the only available toaster. On checking out the next morning we made the owner aware of what had happened and asked him if he was aware of Natasha's Law and he was also very rude and argued the legalities of the Law. We asked him for the money back for my newphew and his girlfriend's breakfast as they had to go out to eat and he refused saying breakfast was free with the room. He then proceeded to shout at us accusing us of using the nut allergy to have a refund, then proceeded to throw a ten pound note onto the table we were sat at😡 This hotel has been reported to Environmental Health over this matter.

Response from Max Thomas, General Manager at The Belgrave Hotel
Responded 16 Jan 2024
We have been waiting for your review. All the rooms are different and they are all at a different level of decoration, some more modern and some not so, but we are working through the rooms redecorating as we go. Yes the floors are not level in quite a few of the rooms, as are the walls. The building was built in 1876 over 140 years ago. The waitress was made aware of the nut allergy yes and her comment “there’s always one” was made in jest, she herself has food intolerance's. She was most upset that her comment was taken in that way and apologises for any misunderstandings. It was expressed how immensely serious the nature of his food allergy is and she spoke to the chef as he wanted to order the beef brisket. The chefs response was to not recommend that dish. The beef brisket has 12 ingredients in the dry rub alone, nuts are not one of the ingredients but some of which have been processed in facilities where nuts may have been processed and say that on the label. Which is the same case for our kitchen, nuts are prepared in that kitchen and we make every effort to keep our guests with allergies safe so we can not guarantee a nut free environment but make every effort to reduce any contamination. The chef recommended dishes he would have complete control over, the steak or the chicken which comes in fresh and from the butcher, less exposure to any possible nut contamination. The steak was chosen, everything on that plate is made in house so the chef was confident that the dish had the least chance of causing an allergic reaction, including the peppercorn sauce made from scratch. Just to be clear we can not and will “GUARANTEE” there are no traces of nuts in our products as we are not a “NUT FREE” kitchen. In the same way we are not a gluten free kitchen, shellfish free kitchen or any of the 14 allergens. I can only apologise on our behalf, for th waitress and how she came across during your meal, she once again apologises for any misunderstandings. On the bill side again no one should have been made to feel uncomfortable, but with the current offer of buy one get one free it does not always work out in peoples favour to split the bill by their dishes, as its buy one get one free. It usually ends up being more expensive when split odd and even numbers etc. The following morning a continental breakfast, yes a date and nut sliced cake made by the chef which was on display under the hot lamps on the hot buffet next to the pastries. Covering products with one of the 14 allergen ingredients is not a requirement by the food standard agency. If your nephew is so allergic to nuts that he can not be in the same room as a product with nuts as one of the ingredients then covering the product at the buffet would have made no difference as other people would be eating that product uncovered at their tables, in the same room. As an evening meal example one of our starters is pesto chicken skewers. Pesto is made from pine nuts, or a knickerbocker glory for desert as that has nuts on the top. Or even Amaretto from the bar. Does that mean that if someone ordered any of these products your nephew would have to leave the room? On the hot buffet stand there are between 6-8 individual tongs. The toaster area yes only has one set of tongs, for the sliced bread to go through the toaster. Only sliced bread in the toast area should go through the toaster and only the sliced bread is next to the toaster. The date cake just like the sliced meat on offer were never intended to go though the toaster. There is a member of staff there to assist anyone who asks for help and overlooking the guests. You expressed your displeasure over the proximity of the nut product to the pastries, but were offered individually wrapped pastries, still sealed and offered bread from a new loaf that could have been toasted in the kitchen for you in a second toaster. That toaster is specifically for gluten intolerant guests for the most part so again we cannot guarantee a nut free environment as explained above, but it was available. As well as that there were yogurts, sliced meats, cereals, again could have been fresh from the box if requested, fruit juices etc. The next morning yes we had a discussion and you insisted that Natasha’s law was applicable in this situation and that you were a dinner lady at a school for many years and I was in the wrong. I said Natashs’s law related to prepackaged foods for sale. Which it does, you said I was wrong and I offered to bring that legislation up on google for you but you were not interested so I said I disagree with you on you interpretation of Natatsha’s law. I suggested that in future when booking to go to a hotel or a restaurant that anyone who has a serious reaction to food or anything really. To inform where your going, we could have made specific accommodations tailored to their requirements. I even gave an example of a customer who is allergic to cleaning sprays so before they arrive we use soap and water or vinegar and water in their bedroom to try and minimise and issues. No information was given to us when you booked and in my view anything that is that important like a life threatening allergy. I would be telling everyone and making sure everyone knows and things are prepared best as possible, especially meals plans. That's just me. Then after all that one of the ladies said we were not even offered any compensation. So I said o right so all this is down to money, so I got £10 from my pocket and put it on the table. Not my best moment but there we go, no one shouted at anyone. Everything was there to cater to his needs as we are supposed to do and required to do under food safety regulations. We would have bent over backwards to help him if we could have, but no one said a word. Yes you reported us to environment health and when I spoke to them I explained what happened and what we have in place, because we follow food safety regulations and are proud to have a the top rating. What a sorry situation. Max

Spent one night here in between Christmas and new year. Lovely hotel. Rooms a bit dated but very clean and comfortable. Rooms have everything you need for a 1 night stay… tea and coffee facilities…shower gel, shampoo and conditioner! Shower is small but very powerful. Good size towels too… both the day and night staff were very friendly! Lovely lounge area with a bar where you can get a range of drinks including coffee/tea. Would recommend staying here for a short break!

The hotel is clean, although a little dated. I certainly haven’t seen a pink bathroom in a while. That said, the Staff were really warm and friendly, the food in the restaurant was delicious, and I would definitely recommend to friends and family.
