Detailed Reviews
We came to the picturesque old town of Midhurst for lunch at the historic Spread Eagle, though unfortunately the car park was completely full. The waiters were helpful and rustled up a ramp so I could get my wife's wheelchair up the steps. The atmosphere in the olde-worlde restaurant was good, as was all of the food. My wife chose Stilton and walnut 'beignets' and minute steak from the lunch menu, while I had a tasty tomato soup, followed by bacon with mashed potato and kale. The two courses, together with two 500 ml carafes of white wine (confession), came to the not excessive price of £78. I would certainly recommend the Spread Eagle for food, service and ambience.

The Spread Eagle is full of charm and places to relax. The spa provides excellent facilities, with the treatments being exceptional. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff were extremely attentive throughout our stay. The evening finished with the loveliest of sleeps in a vey comfortable bed! The bathrooms are also well equipped with luxurious spa toiletries so you feel consistently pampered and relaxed. We went on a walk the next day directly from the hotel, so feel it was extremely well located. Would love to go back one day!

I had read good things in journalist reviews so was very excited to find the Midweek spa+overnight stay deal for my partner's birthday here at the Spread Eagle.
For 2 people it includes the basic room, 3course dinner, full English breakfast and £50 between you towards spa treatments!
I also love that it's a dog friendly hotel, but we left ours with family on this occasion!
I had mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday on the off chance we might get a free drink or something, but to our delight we were upgraded to a four poster bedroom with a lovely box of chocolates on the bed and a note from the manager Sarah 😁.
With our trip off to a fabulous start, we donned the robe and slippers provided and went down to the spa. It was quiet (in the midst of Coronavirus 😬) and we really appreciated having the space almost to ourselves. The Jacuzzi wasn't working which hadn't been mentioned, but everything else was so nice it didn't really bother us.
We really enjoyed the dinner, particularly scallop starter and Pavlov dessert. I'm assuming the venison was also delicious as my partner made short work of it!
The spa treatments were very good too, I highlighted problem areas and my masseuse, Sammie, made sure to work extra on that part of my shoulders during the In Good Spirits massage. My partner had the Work it Out massage and was also very happy with it. I recommend booking 55mins for the sake of the extra £25, it's well worth it to treat yourself.
The service, from booking to checkout and everything in between was perfect, personal, and friendly. Particularly from Sarah and our waiter Horace who was there to serve dinner and breakfast.
It was GREAT value for money, although not cheap, so for me this is a special occasion getaway but it depends on your budget. If you're deciding between one of those £100 spa days on lastminute.com vs an overnight stay here, you won't be sorry you spent the extra.
We will definitely come back another time 😁

We stayed here for valentines weekend as a romantic and relaxing weekend away. The hotel is beautiful and has a lot of history. We were pleased with our room (cosy room, slightly smaller) we knew it would be quite a simple room as that was what it said online although we did pay £240 for ONE night !! So with that price we thought we’d get a brilliant stay, charging that much for their smallest room for one night. The hotel had no atmosphere at all, no music playing or anything in the bar area or restaurant so very quiet and almost awkward as we could just hear other people’s whispered conversations. The spa facilities didn’t live up to the price of this hotel - everything was so small, the jacuzzi, steam room and sauna could only fit a max of about 3 people in each, so when it was busy we had to look for somewhere else to fit in. The robes that were provided were of poor quality, the loops for the belt to go through were all broken and/or non existent.
We had breakfast included with our room- the food was lovely and the continental options were great too, however we both ordered the vegetarian breakfast which consisted of 1 sausage, egg, 1 tomato and mushrooms which to me isn’t worth the money we paid. We asked for some extras which the staff were more than happy to add.
The front of house staff in the restaurant was so friendly and polite and any cleaners we saw in the hotel were very polite too. Our receptionist that checked us out didn’t ask how our stay was at all, made no conversation, just charged our credit card and that was it. No one went above and beyond to make sure we had the best stay.
Overall we had an okay stay, disappointed as we paid a lot of money and feel that it wasn’t worth that price at all. Some lovely elements to this stay but let down by a few simple things. Would only recommend staying during the week when it would be less busy.

Great rooms, hotel full of historic details and comfortable atmosphere. We went half board which was good value and dinner was excellent, delicious locally sourced cuisine. Service was a little ponderous at times, a reflection of the popularity of the venue. Its evident from the number of regular repeat guests also staying.
Rooms very comfortable and spotless with nice furniture and spa was ample for a short stay, possibly a little busy at weekends with day-spa members.
Staff could not have been more friendly or helpful.
We would definitely stay again.

We were in room 14, what they call a cosy room but was plenty big enough for us, beautifully decorated and on the corner of the hotel by the bar and restaurant. Walk in shower new and very clean. Loved the touches like the prettily designed tea and coffee cups and own nespresso maker/decent tea. Rooms above the Spa would be easier if you want to wander around in dressing gowns as our room was the other side of the hotel. Bar was lovely and quiet with open fire. Evening meal delicious and sat by the fire in the beautifully lit dining room. Spa is small I must say, busy in the day but I swam early evening with only a few others in there. I can imagine it can be busy and may not suit all for a relaxing day but clean, pretty, calming. I had no treatments but heard people praising what they had had! Breakfast was the only disappointment as vegetarian option was not very impressive one cheap looking vege sausage, one tomato and bland button mushrooms (luckily I ordered two eggs). I think demand probably higher these days for this kind of option and better quality/more would be welcomed. The toast was also a little bland and was a contrast to the lovely specialist bread with dinner the night before. All in all I would visit again and well worth it. Just sort brekky and then fabulous!

Using the Gift Vouchers we received from our Family at Christmas we stayed for the night as well as using the Spa on our day of arrival.
From the point of arrival till the moment we checked out the following day all the staff we spoke to were extremely friendly and helpful,
While our standard room was not particularly large the care with which it was fitted out and the quality of the bed and bedding made up for this. The most comfortable pillows I have slept on.
Dinner that evening was ok. The service was very good, the quality of the ingredients were good and the dishes were cooked to a good standard but at £42 for three courses it wasn't quite as special as the rest of Hotel promised.
However this didn't spoil what was a relaxing and very enjoyable 24 hours

We stayed as part of a racing day package during Glorious Goodwood week.
The hotel is in the town but you would think you were in the country. The building is old and has character and charm both inside and out. The decor is quirky and traditional and works very well.
Our room was very traditional with all the facilities - tv, wifi, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, nespresso machine and tea. The treat was the homemade cookies!
There is onsite parking, so no worries trying to find a parking space.
We ate in the hotel restaurant. The evening meal menu was £38 for three courses plus wine. The menu was very good with 5 or 6 choices of each course plus a specials menu. The wine list was very good. Tables were nicely spaced and set with linen, nice silverware and glasses.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming and projected an air of calm which was so nice after a busy day at the races.
We didn't use the spa or really explore the hotel and bar as we were only there overnight - two nights would have been better!
The town is a typical market town and being close the Cowdry Park there are very nice walks on the doorstep.
I would recommend the Spread Eagle for a short getaway as there is plenty to do around the area and the coast is only a short drive away.

I wanted a really indulgent spa break. It's been a tough few years. This was everything I imagined. The hotel has such character with nooks and crannies to discover. And not too big. It felt intimate but not intrusive. The spa was perfect. Where other hotels were requiring guests to book a one hour slot to use facilites, we were able to hang out in the spa garden or by the pool. The loungers were distanced and sanitised and guests were encouraged to be respectful (and were). The treatments were super relaxing on treatment tables that were like lying on a warm hot water bottle. The food in the restaurant was excellent so I'm glad we did the dinner, bed and breakfast deal. I was really impressed with all the staff who were, without exception, friendly and helpful and kind. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

This is a delightful place. Starts well with a good sized car park. Then you enter through a conservatory where people munch scones and read newspapers supplied by hotel. You go into reception and everyone is well organised and helpful and you know you can relax. I stayed in the Blue Room, up two flights but worth it, quiet, light and airy and gentle decor. Sparkling modern bathroom. The bar is a dream for foreign visitors : huge oak beams, persian rugs, comfy arm chairs and a large open fire.
Breakfast good including vegetarian options . Its a short walk to bookshop, town centre, Budgens supermarket or ruins of Cowdray. Will happily return.

Dear apriljs12 and Nicole M,
Thank you for your question and answer. Unfortunately, due to the nature of this 15th Century coaching inn and the fact it is Grade II* listed, we are not permitted to make any major structural alternations to the fabric of the building, which would be required to install a lift. We are also not a five-star hotel, never have be, nor want to be. We are a 15th Century coaching in which we hope offers, luxurious comfort in a charming, warm and characterful setting.
Please do not hesitate to get in contact, should I be of any personal assistance with any future bookings.
With warmest regards,
J-J Pollak
