Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The real star of this hostel is its location right in the thick of the old town . It is situated next to the Old Town gaol which is where the tourist information centre is . The castle is just up the hill along the cobbled street. You need your keycard to gain entry to the corridors and your rooms. The accomodation is on two levels and this is quite a climb not to mention the walk up the hill. My room was compact ,4 bunkbeds with ensuite shower and toilet ,however the floor boards creak and are very noisy so early mornings and late nights disturb everyone . The staff are friendly and are good at providing information . Just down the street is a Wetherspoons pub (The Crossed peels) which has good for food and beer good value for money. There are other bars that looked good but i did not have the opportunity to try. There is also a VUE cinema over the footbridge at the railway station . During my stay the UCI World cycling championship was taking place and the streets were closed on and off for most of my stay so to avoid being trapped in the car park on my day of departure to Pitlochry i had to park at Springkerse park and ride for 3 nights which is over a mile away. Parking at the hostel is limited anyway to about 8 spaces.

We very much enjoyed our stay at this hostel! We arrived in Stirling well before check-in, but were allowed to leave our bags until we checked-in. The desk staff were kind, helpful and friendly. We stayed in a double ensuite and found the room to be very clean. We did find the shower a bit intense - but the strong water pressure was nice after a long train ride and carrying a large backpack (mostly) uphill from the train station, though some water did splash onto the floor. The shared spaces were also clean and well organized. The hostel was very conveniently located and we were able to walk to Holyrood Abbey, Stirling Castle, Stirling Distillery and a Tesco Superstore. We would absolutely recommend this hostel to other travellers.

Very nice location if you love classic Scottisch architecture. I loved the view on the cemetery, very spooky. Double room was moderately clean...for example shower carpet had yellow stains. Bed sheets were already on, but we had to take own towels from downstairs. Bed was comfy and super view. There is also a small table with chairs in the room. The biggest no was the shower, the whole room was full of water after taking a shower and also the shower curtain...not very modern and not hygienic. The door to the toilet was also broken as if someone had kicked it in. Unfortunately we could not do the check in strictly before 16 although we arrived earlier and alhtough we had a private room. We did not have breakfast but I checked the common kitchen and rooms and looked fine very cosy. Personnel was also nice and friendly. Position of the hostel is great just below the castle and very close to the city center. All in all is was a nice hostel experience!!

Positives: A lovely old Church building renovated with interesting industrial staircases. Beautiful windows and views. The location is phenomenal, right next to the castle, old prisons, art centre and restaurants. Check out the viewing deck at the Tollbooth centre opposite & recommend the ghost tour next door. We got there early and had no trouble parking. Facilities were basic but clean enough. Staff were really helpful and friendly. Negatives: I did whack my head on the shelf on the head board - can these be repositioned? We shared the floor with an excited teenage rugby team & it was noisy but obviously not the hostels fault and just a little unlucky. Think they had a good time too.

Stirling Youth Hostel isn't anything fancy, but it's got everything you need in a hostel. It's perfect for Backpackers. It's in a perfect location for Stirling less than 10 minutes away from the bus & train station, next to the old jail, a couple of minutes down the hill from the castle and 5 minutes from the main shops. I found it so handy to pop back in during the day for cups of tea. The staff are all really freindly. It's clean and I felt very safe. The lockers are a decent size - bring your own lock. I got an amazing view from my dorm room. There's kitchen facilities with free tea and coffee. It's 2 minutes away from wetherspoons if you want cheap food and can't be bothered with cooking.

Thanks again to the very friendley man and lady at the reception at the hostel. I came from Edinburgh to visit Stirling. I had problems with my mobile phone. I went into the hostel and asked for help, and they really saved my day and solved my problem. I had a wonderful day in beautiful Stirling and made a lot of pictures with my mobile phone. Without your help this all would not have been possible. I wish you the best. Greetings from Juliane

We love youth hosteling and the mix of people and that’s what you get. Staff helpful when you engage. Signage is poor in the hostel as only discovered large comfy lounge on first floor by chance . The cleanliness standard at the hostel is an issue . A very tired hostel in need of love and attention . Could be great with a refit as for example the kitchen . Who would place two large fridges right next to the only door , Despite there being a large catering kitchen as well as the residents kitchen there are no meals offered apart from a continental breakfast . There is also no cafe . The location is good although steep for some . There are many cafes / take always within a short distance from the hostel and supermarkets .Be aware there are stairs no lift and the rooms on the top floor are very poor . Furniture dated and dangerous ( shelf on headboard ) so if any access issues I would avoid .

Lets start with the plus points. The room was a decent size, the shower was hot(When the hot water was available) and the bed quite comfortable.Location near the Castle and the older part of Stirling was also good. However.I do not appreciate being misled when I asked if I could leave my bag due to early arrival in Stirling.I was told I could but there was no one there on arrival. When the reception did open, the attitude was pretty much"Couldnt care less.".I Know cheap is cheap but there is also a Travellodge in Stirling and this may be a better place to stay.

Response from Hostelling Scotland, Agency / Consultant at Stirling Youth Hostel
Responded 7 Jan 2022
Thank you Chris for your recent review following a previous stay at our Stirling Youth Hostel. Although we don't staff our receptions 24 hours per day - particularly during the day hours our team members are on site and away cleaning our rooms. I'm sorry to hear that no one was in ear shot to hear the bell to come and assist you and take your bag for you. The hostel does benefit from being in a great position just a few doors down from the castle. Our teams across all of our properties are highly praised for the customer service. I will ensure that your review is shared with the Manager of the property and ensure appropriate training with the team members for our 2022 season. I do hope you will consider choosing to return to Stirling Youth Hostel or another of our properties in the near future. Best wishes, Craig. Guest Relations Manager.
