Only booked one night as a quick stop over of our tour of Scotland. It turned out to be the best room we've had all week. Lovely large modern room with a large opening window. Great space. Bathroom was clean and modern. As the 6pm curfew was in place we could eat at the hotel, but no alcohol. We ordered Steak Pie with vegetables and a Chicken Pesto Pasta with garlic bread, served with a glass of Coca Cola. The waitress was lovely and the meal was really good. We went to the room, watched some TV and had a bottle of wine. After a great night's sleep we went down for breakfast. Again, lovely food and great service from the waiter. The hotel itself is on a quite shopping street and is a restaurant/wine bar. The rooms are lovely. We parked 3 minutes walk away at Rainbow Slides car park and it cost £3 for 24 hours. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and ready for our next journey.

First the positives - and there are some real advantages to this hotel. Excellent central location and nevertheless very quiet. Pleasant staff and good breakfast if a wee bit slow to arrive. Bedrooms spotless and very comfy bed. Lots of room and nice sitting room. Parking at the rear (council) but time limited so had to park elsewhere overnight. However there are a few points that could do with improvement. We booked an apartment just to give ourselves a bit more space and flexibility. Although accommodation was for 4 people there were only 3spoons (no teaspoons) , 2 forks and no knives. Had to cut sandwiches with the pizza cutter. No corkscrew. . Wine glasses were very sticky and dusty - had to wash before use. Kitchen cupboard doors were also a bit grimy. No dish towel so had to use a hand towel. Bathroom was large, but we were a bit worried about the exposed wires on the radiator. The walls could have done with a wipe or a lick of paint as there were run marks all round. Glad we didn’t have to use the spare bedding as this was basically bundled up and lying on the floor of the hall cupboard. Didn’t look very clean at all. However the flat was cosy so no additional bedding required. The area outside the apartment door seemed to be a dumping ground for unwanted furniture... it all had a bit of a feel of student accommodation. The meals looked lovely (we only had breakfast) and the small restaurant seemed as busy as covid restrictions allowed. Our breakfast was very nice (if a bit slow to arrive) and we did hear the couple nearby being charged for a second coffee which was a bit mean given by the time their hot food arrived the coffee and tea must have been cold. Overall place has lots of potential but the flat was a bit neglected. The Hotel rooms looked small but lovely. The apartment was a bit disappointing if I’m honest. So I guess I would recommend booking a bedroom rather than an apartment if you are choosing Friars Wynd.

Husband booked this fab looking boutique hotel with the perfect location! On arrival waited 10mins to be seen and checked in. Handed pre order forms for breakfast with no pen. Taken to room omg on the top floor, i tell ya the room on the top floor os absolutely NOT like any the pictures clearly the smallest room in the hotel! Lift - not working. Clean enough, scrapes out paint on walls, shower doesnt drain away quickly. Breakfast first morning - we thought it would be lovely to have it in the room- now your only allowed 1 breakfast choice( most hotels you can get cereals, yogurts etc and something hot, nope not here!) Breakfast arrived coffee split all over the place poor girl had to carry it up all the stairs! Breakfast was not that warm, no butter for toast, not even salt or pepper! My husband who loves haggis said it was disgusting. We ate down stairs second morning was better. Poached eggs were over cooked alot.. still nothing other than your one choice available. The girl was nice just one person doing everything. Such a same as the location is quite honestly perfect!! What we had was absolutely not worth the money. Real shame.
