On spec Sunday lunchtime visit: Received a warm welcome and beaming smile from Bex as we walked through the door. Extensive renovation has resulted in a bright modern, clean interior while retaining the style and charm of the historic Cayley Arms outside. The food was beautifully presented by attentive friendly staff. It’s over thirty years since I was in The Cayley. Bex & Tim (who we met for the first time today) are obviously dedicated to providing a memorable experience and have done the place proud. We’ll be back.

The hotel and restaurant was superb . We appreciated its quiet setting, which was perfect for a relaxing break. Our standout favourite was the stream that runs through the rear garden—it really added to the relaxing atmosphere!

We stayed for two nights and enjoyed four meals. The food was fantastic, especially the cooked-to-order English breakfast. The evening restaurant served classic pub food, and the sausage mash with Yorkshire pudding will long be remembered as one of the best I’ve had in years. The roast dinner was top-tier, with generous portions of both lamb and beef!

The restaurant was super busy on Sunday evening—a sign of its success!

We visited the coast, travelled on the steam train (which was a 10/10 experience) and visited York.

We did get the sense that the hotel wasn’t particularly geared up for hosting kids, this worked well for us. I’d recommend the Cayley Arms to couples and other adults looking for a peaceful retreat.

Lastly, a big thank you to Tim and Becky, who clearly worked very hard. They knew that spending just 10 minutes chatting with guests could greatly enhance the experience, and their local expertise was much appreciated. Thanks to you both for your warm hospitality!

OMG what an amazing place. Rooms were spotless with everything you need. We stayed in the Stag room and the views overlooking the brook and gardens were lovely and peaceful. Food was amazing, freshly cooked to order and piping hot, varied selection of dishes and definitely good value for money. All staff extremely friendly and very helpful but special thanks to Tim and Becky (owners) who went out of their way to make our weekend perfect and for suggesting things for us to see and do in the surrounding area. We have been home and hour and are already planning our next visit which will be very soon.

Four of us thoroughly enjoyed Sunday lunch here but be warned - the roast beef, pork and chicken all come with a HUGE Yorkshire pudding! Best of all, we were given plenty of vegetables including a delicious cauliflower cheese to accompany our meals. And the food and plates were hot. Can't stand places that are mean with the veg or serve lukewarm food on cold plates - this is not one of them. Only one of us had room for a pudding and he reported the apple charlotte was perfect. Wish I'd had room for the rice pudding. Excellent value too at £98.95 including 3 x 2 courses at £22 each and 1 x 3 courses at £27 plus 2 pints and a soft drink. We will return. Oh - the pub is not in Pickering but in Allerston, a few miles from Pickering on the Scarborough side.

We live reasonably locally and have been trying to discover somewhere that is "good". Well this place is not good, it is very very good! We booked a table for late Sunday Lunch, we do not like to eat before 5 p.m. We were greeted and seated drinks orders taken and menu's provided in the most delightful bar, the whole place is beautifully decorated just adding to the feeling of been somewhere special. According to the men the beer was very good, always a plus! The food was superb, lots of fresh vegetables, melt in the mouth meat and a lovely yorkshire pudding, deserts, which we shared because we were really full, were lovely. Price wise it is not the cheapest place in the neighbourhood but worth every penny. Outside the gardens are smart and on a warm day they would be a pleasure to sit in. We also appreciated the notices about children and their behaviour when on the premises, oh how I wish other places would do this, nothing spoils a nice meal out or a quite drink more than out of control children racing about and shouting. We will be back very soon

Just got back from a 2 night weekend away at the cayley arms. First time visit my wife & I loved it, the place is spotless throughout ! Lovely room, lovely food & drinks very well priced.
Ideally situated for visiting areas such as Thornton le dale, pickering, helmesley etc. Our hosts were really great, going out of there way to help in any shape or form. Plus an added bonus of not being surrounded by dogs when having an evening meal or drink. So thanks to Becky & Tim, we shall be back.

We've had a fantastic Bank Holiday visit to Pickering with the sun shining. Tim and Becky made our stay at the Cayley Arms a special one, with a warm welcome and friendly hosting throughout, along with great directions, help to sort taxis and advice on a curry house. Our room, the Grouse, was smart and cosy, with a comfy bed and a cracking double shower. The setting of the pub is lovely, with a stream running through that you can hear in bed with the window open at night, very relaxing. There are horses grazing in the field by the pub, and the outdoor seating catches the sun, with heaters outdoors for those sitting out after sundown. It's a scenic 7 min drive into Pickering, with ample parking at the B&B. We ate at the B&B one night and while the vegetarian options aren't extensive, we had a tasty meal, and Tim produced some veggie sausages for our Full English in the morning... we certainly didn't go hungry! They're a smashing couple and we'll recommend the B&B to those visiting the area.

We went for a meal, 4 adults, 2 children and a toddler. The surroundings were beautiful as was the decor. The food was absolutely delicious but the staff were miserable and didn’t appear to like children being there. There was no child menu, which we were told in advance, but were told that children were welcome and food could be adjusted for them. Within 5 minutes of us arriving, we felt totally unwelcome and just wanted our food so we could leave. The beer garden was beautiful for adults but had nothing to keep children entertained. My granddaughter who is 5yrs old and disabled, sat near another table to look at some ornaments for a few minutes and we were asked to move as they now needed to sanitize that table again. My grandchildren are 6yrs, 5yrs and 1yr and I would say if you have young children or anyone in your party who has learning difficulties - DO NOT GO THERE. It’s such a shame because the restaurant and food were lovely.

My wife and I recently had a fantastic week staying at the Cayley Arms, the room was fantastic and finished to a very high standard and we were greeted by Becky who was a fantastic host along with Tim and the rest of the team during our stay.
The food was fantastic and a breakfast to die for which set us up for the day in readiness for some fantastic long walks in the surrounding areas of beautiful countryside and seaside locations.
Nothing was too much trouble and we were given loads of advice on places to visit.
Always helpful when the weather was as fantastic as the week we visited and most evenings were spent outside in the beer garden enjoying our evening meal and a nice drink.
Tim and Becky would always make time to have a quick catch up each evening to ask about our day and were the perfect hosts in a perfect venue.
I travel all over the UK and Ireland for my work, and stay in many different types of hotels and pubs and this has to be one of the best I have stayed in by a huge margin.
We will definitely return..

Response from Management Team, Owner at Cayley Arms
Responded 22 Jul 2022
Hi Peter, Thank you for your wonderful words, We would like to thank yourself and everyone who has taken the time and though to write a review for our business, we will endeavour to reply to all of them in due course when we can set aside some time so we apologize for not replying before now. We have put our hearts and souls into trying to make this business everything we would wish for should we go away for a break or out for a meal, a drink or celebration with friends. To make visiting us an enjoyable experience for guests gives us immense pleasure. I have to say though, its not just Becky & I that put our all into this, its the fantastic teams both front of house that the customers meet and also the kitchen staff that are rarely seen but equally valued for their contribution, each and every one of them. Its been a huge journey since we arrived in North Yorkshire 5 years ago refurbishing the building and honing the service we offer. the support, cards and kind words from customers are at times humbling. We can only say a huge thankyou for the kind support and encouragement we have received though what has been difficult times for all of us in so many ways. Your custom supports Becky & I, our staff and our community whether here or our surrounding villages with their own businesses, for that, we are eternally grateful. Thank you. Tim, Becky and our fabulous Team.

How long has the pub been closed when was it last open

I've recently stayed at The Vale of Pickering campsite and was asking the lady about this pub and she said it only opens Fri, Sat & Sunday's so the beer is stale, it looks closed from the outside and it is up for sale
