Whilst the hotel decor is in need of a makeover the hotel itself is very stately. The staff are attentive and welcoming also the food is well prepared, tasty and reasonably priced. All in all a very comfortable stay, my only critisism was that they took payment for the room twice, however after a phone call to the manager this was very quickly remedied and dealt with in a very professional manner. Thank you to the staff at dinner and breakfast for really great service.

A hidden gem of a hotel. If you want to step back in time and feel the grandeur of high ceilings and cubic volume with ornate staircases then this is the place for you. Set within beautiful gardens with beautiful established trees it is a place to relax and leave all stresses behind. Be prepared for creaky floorboards ( they are hundreds of years old) be prepared for uneven floors and all bedrooms are on either first floor or second floor. There isnt a lift but your baggage will be ported for you should that be required. There are several eating areas and a lovely lounge bar to relax. Breakfast is freshly cooked to order and is always excellent with traditional choices but also includes vegetarian and vegan choices as well as gluten free choices. The restaurant offers an excellent range of fresh options and served on dressed tables. I have always had a lovely meal here and one of the owners is very experienced in wine and stocks many gems. This is a family run business with an incredibly warm welcome. I can highly recommend this establishment as a place that has no pretence, just a warm, friendly welcome.

Stayed here for 2 nights as it was closely located to a business whom I needed to visit over a period of a couple of days.
The drive up to the hotel reveals a quite impressive frontage that I would imagine is most attractive when in full bloom.
The building is old and comes with all thecquirks you would expect I.e. sloping and squeaking floors and various underfoot undulations - all part of the charm for me.
Room was of a good size and the bed was massive. Nice to have a chair to sit in with overhead light for reading. Shower was hit and miss - best let itveun for a good couple of mins first.
Ate the a la carte menu both nights. Decent quality. Steak a bit fatty and sinuiy but other than that it was good and service in both bar and restaurant was friendly.
Location is quite remote and it was very quiet in the hotel which suited me for this trip. Would stay again if needed to be in the area.

Jeff H Christie on a bike, where to start with this joyless experience.

Over the years we’ve attended many weddings and events here and it’s always been nice. As my parents have been shielding for months we decided it might be a good place to meet for a meal, so phoned up and asked if they could accommodate us as a group (1 bubble and an extra family). This was fine as long as we sat on separate tables. Absolutely no problem with this.

We arrived, walked through the door and were immediately barked at “where are your masks?”. It not being a legal requirement to wear masks in restaurants we hadn’t brought them. We were given disposable ones to wear as we walked through an empty restaurant to a table so close by I didn’t even had a chance to fasten it behind both ears before we were seated (I have no problem wearing a mask but I object to the lack of welcome, tone and method).

We were a 3, 3 and a 2. They gave us two tables of 4. As we had to mix up anyway we asked if we could just push the tables together. Nope, this is against the roolz (and common sense).

Ordered a bottle of red wine. This arrived open and was plonked in front of me. It was chilled. We asked if there was a children’s menu “no” and that was it. No explanation of what they could do, or an offer to speak to the chef.

We suggested they take the order of the other table while we tried to sort something out. That apparently was also against the roolz as it had to be done one table at a time (no catching these guys out by suggesting they turn to the next page in the pad and back again). This led to us eating in relay - in your face Covid.

The food in fairness was quite nice, though the menu was somewhat surreal in its offering. We weren’t asked if they could get us anything else and we had to ask for sauces which arrived in unbranded sachets (truly the mark of upmarket dining experience). The final straw was having to pay on your way out a la greasy spoons across the land.

The ambience was that of a nursing home, the gastronomic version of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill. We just felt like an unwelcome nuisance. We were there because my mother is terminally ill and had convinced herself she was going to die without ever seeing us together again and it was supposed to be fun.

They’ve just gone to far. If you don’t want custom then stay closed, otherwise it’s just a waste of everyone’s time and energy.

We have done nothing but restaurant crawl around London and East England for a month and have never experienced anything like it. Everywhere else has made us feel welcome, given a seamless service and managed to work within the rules whilst making it feel normal. For a relatively expensive meal for the area we expected so much more not least a thank you for coming out.

Response from mark wilkinson, General Manager at Hardwicke Hall Manor Hotel
Responded 10 Sept 2020
Hello AnonCambs Thank you for giving us the opportunity to respond to your comments on this social platform. I will respond to each comment if you don't mind individually. The government guidelines for the wearing of masks are which I will quote directly from the government website "In England, you must wear a face covering in the following indoor settings (a list of examples for each is included in the brackets):public areas in hotels and hostels. Now as you are aware we are a hotel so we fall into the category of masks to be worn. This was also reminded at the time of your reservation as was that the maximum legal size table currently which is six people. Prosecution of a licensee who break this law currently stands at up to 2 years imprisonment and a maximum fine of £10, 000. So as you can see common sense tells you do not push the tables together. As there was 8 people we can put you onto two tables of 4 if that was your social bubble. If not let us know otherwise. An email table reservation was sent out to yourselves on the 31st of august stating two tables of 4 booked. This was 1 week before your reservation. If as stated you were a 3 , 3 and 2 why did you not come back to us within that week ? Having looked also at the video footage at no stage were you "barked at " and if I had the option I would upload this to tripadvisor. Not sure if it was due to some of your part arriving an hour late. I understand that as stated you have done nothing but crawl around the restaurants in London and the East of England . I genuinely hope that these were as covid secure as we are especially with you visiting your terminally ill mother. I would of expected that you would be happy that we are following the correct guidelines to make people feel safe and secure in these uncertain times. Regarding a children's menu we do not have a designated menu and point taken we have now added a this to our menu options. However on the menus that you were given we did have Banger's and Mash, Chicken Parmesan, along with a House Beefburger. ( With options that they can be made into small plates.) Our apologies that this was not clear for you. Now if your experience was so bad why was it that when one of your guests went to pay at reception they also left a gratuity for the staff. With Regards Mark Wilkinson

We really enjoyed our stay here. We had a great evening meal that was very competitively priced at ‘happy hour’. Food was of a very good standard and tasted lovely. The room was a good size with an ultra comfy bed. Very clean and tidy.
The hotel & room were a bit dated decor wise but for the price and overall experience it was a great stay. We would definitely come back as we really enjoyed it here.
Staff very helpful and friendly.

My wife and I have just had a great weekend away at Hardwicke Hall Manor Hotel.
We were welcomed politely by the reception staff and told how our weekend vouchers for the free drinks worked and shown the dinning room where we would later enjoy a lovely dinner.
We were offered a hand upstairs with our luggage and down again when we checked out,Conner is a credit to the hotel in this regard. Indeed during our stay all the staff were friendly and polite, well done all!
The hotel is based in a lovely old building full of the charm of yesteryear. We will certainly visit again.

Room 10 was cold as the heating did not work but gurgled all night, the toilet seat is broken and unfit for use. I have noticed from my bank statement I have also been charged twice for the room once on the 29th Ocotber and again yesterday.

In breakfast this morning the service was fair however there was no milk provided for the coffee and in fact families had to get glasses of milk from the table to use in drinks.

We stayed at the hotel for my husbands 50th Birthday and took part in the murder mystery night where the food had been exceptional. However, there was a group of people who had clearly too much to drink and as we retired to the loungh bar area we're standing on the funitire. I am sure this is not the image you wish to portray yet bar staff contined to ask them if they required more drinks. It made other guests feel intimated and uncomfortable. I was also aware that indeed that party had already been spoken to by staff, as another guests coat had been removed by them.

No receptionist didn't answer the phone internally or externally and I'm still trying to get through now terrible experiance. Presently paid twice for something I wouldn't have paid half for. Currently have rung 4 times to get an answer phone message telling me to ring back. I see for another review they have also been charged twice.

Visited yesterday for a meal we chose the 3 course and have to say it was beautiful. Good varied menu cooked fresh and plentiful. The vegetable spring rolls were lovely served hot and crispy, the chicken terrine was delicious . Can highly recommend the duck stir fry. We will definitely be back need to try a flatbread.

My husband and I have just visited the Hotel for afternoon tea and were extremely disappointed. Afternoon tea experience should be a relaxing experience. Unfortunately the room was full with a party of over 30 people over five tables and we had to listen to them make their speeches and sadly we could not hear ourselves speaking to each other. We were not taken to our table and when the afternoon tea arrived the cling film was not taken from the sandwiches nor were we initially told what the sandwiches actually were.. Coffee was served in a cup and whilst we were offered refills I do feel that a coffee pot should be provided on the table. The food was adequate but the whole experience was noisy and certainly not the relaxing experience we anticipated. I do feel that if the Hotel are aware that they are having a large party of guests that other guests should be informed and possible the party catered for in one room separate from others. We left after half an hour very disappointed.

Such a nice looking building from the outside …. To give credit, where credit is due, our meal in the restaurant was absolutely fine. The bedrooms, on the other hand, were disappointing to say the least. The room was far to hot due to the towel rail running at at about 80C - turning it off was an unwanted challenge just before bed. Finally, we located a switch hidden behind the dressing table. The room was still too warm though (despite the window being open and the fan on the ceiling) because (I assume) the hot water pipes are running at a dangerously high temperature which I discovered when I tried to take a shower in the morning. Not only was the water blisteringly hot there was hardly cold water making taking a shower a rather tense affair (also because the shower hose is too short so that the shower head only came up to chin level - why??????????????). Other stuff like the towel rack being broken, the broken switch outside the room and the TV remote being barely functional and the fact that the hotel is not accessible for people with walking difficulties (it’s a no go for anyone in a wheel chair) were minor irritations and just evidence that the hotel is in need of significant investment. We would have had breakfast but it is only available until 09:00 which was a shame (why anyway????). Finally, if you are sensitive to people not wearing masks around the hotel you should check there isn’t a wedding function on when book !!!!!!!
