In these times, the safety of hospitality venues is important. We were greeted warmly and the very pleasant server checked our “passports”, recorded our contact details and seated us rapidly. Throughout our visit, all staff could be seen wearing masks properly.

Shame to have to start a review with that! The rest of the experience was great as well - snacks, drinks very enjoyable in a good atmosphere. Thanks!

We try to come here once a year for a wee couples retreat and we usually avail of the Sunday night deal. This time we have come on Saturday, overnight, deluxe Seaview room and 2 x 3 course meals. I was a little apprehensive this year as I had heard anecdotally that there had been some poor reviews and I was worried it would be a disappointment on previous years. It was definitely not. The room was lovely as ever, staff were fantastic and the food, oh the food was I would say the best we have had in all our visits.

Seafood sharing platter was genuinely to die for, the prawns, squid and mussels with sourdough were all individually wonderful. The steaks were great, really well seasoned and the pepper sauce was one of the nicest I've ever had anywhere.y husbands cheese ake dessert was divine. The only criticism was for my pannacotta was not set properly, but the ice cream accompaniment was heaven. Breakfast this morning fantastic as always and a latish checkout time of 12.

Wonderful. Can't wait til next time

The communication with the Salty Dog was quick and efficient before our trip. They had a very warm welcome for us when we arrived, and explained very clearly the requirements they had regarding Covid 19: they have to ask a few questions, and then they provide the guests with the shower products and the tea/coffee in a little bag, as they cannot leave it in the room and when they take us to our room they are not not allowed to come inside the room with us for security reasons. We were upgraded to a bigger room which was very nice. The room was very clean and the bed so comfortable, we slept like babies! We had a lovely view on the Marina, from the top floor! Mandy took the time throughout our stay to inform us about the walks on the coastal path, answer any question we had or just have a chat with us. We could book the times when we had lunch and dinner to avoid a big crowd and keep safe and away from the ongoing virus. The food at the restaurant was amazing, they had a new menu, and it was lovely - not too much choice, just enough to know what you want, and the presentation is also lovely. Staff at the restaurant was brilliant also, very welcoming and looking after their customers. We will definitely stay at Salty Dog next time we come to Bangor!

My wife and I decided to have lunch after morning shopping. Our table top was sticky and the vinal on the chairs was cracked, same with a lot of other tables, restaurant approximately 20 percent occupied.
The service was poor two out of the five staff were sixteen year olds on work experience, they should have chosen a different restaurant to learn!

The napkins were two worn tea towels
Seafood chowder consisted of smoked cod, smoked haddock and salmon, no mussels or prawns, chowder too salty with a few pieces of sweet corn and not enough broth. The burger was average the onion rings totalled one and was 98 percent batter the red pepper relish was tastless and the chips just okay.

The flat white coffee was fine but served in a glass which was too hot to hold so we had to wait for the coffee to cool.

We were never asked whether we were enjoying our food!

Overall poor food and service plus overpriced and restaurant was totally in need of refurbishment, new kitchen and waiting staff who have been properly trained.

We shall not be back.

16/05/21 2pm - Booked a table through open table, on arrival was escorted to the back beer garden where we were then shown to our table, I can only describe the seats as two deck chairs both facing the rest of the people in the beer garden, two table with a table about 90cm x 90cm that was between us. So effectively they want you to eat your dinner at a 90 degree angle.
Waiting 10 minutes before the gentleman came and offered us a drink and we asked to move to one of the numerous tables that were free, was told NO!

The lady at the front desk said she understood our frustrations but yet did nothing!! It is an embarrassment they are offering this table to the public and to expect them to eat as is laughable. For a restaurant we have used several times it is sorely disappointing.

We won’t be back and I encourage others before booking to not book the deck chairs facing the everyone, Please be warned.

Frankly, it’s not forgivable to serve people, inevitably at close quarters, without wearing a mask.

Temperatures were taken on arrival. Hand steriliser was there. Signs about procedures due to Covid at the door. But NO MASKS. That shows either a casual disregard for your customers - or pure stupidity. We won’t be back until the owners wake up to reality and insist their staff wear masks.

Thank you for your comments. We have carried out extensive risk assessments of the business and have decided to implement a number of precautions to combat the spread of Covid-19. This includes the taking of temperatures for everybody entering the building; guests, staff, suppliers, etc. We have protocols that mean the staff are not in close contact, for example the passing of plates, the setting of drinks and cutlery etc. at the end of a table. We train staff in body positioning, so they are not talking directly at customers. All staff carry their own personal sanitisers and sanitise their hands after touching anything that a guest has touched and after clearing every table. And of course, there is table distancing and the cleaning protocols between tables. There is also evidence to suggest that masks can actually concentrate the virus when worn for long periods and there are a number of protocols that would need to go into the handling of them through a shift. We believe, as do a number of other restaurants that we have hit the correct balance and have found the majority of guests appreciate our approach. I am sorry if this made you uncomfortable.

Overall a very nice stay. The bedroom had everything u could need. Hairdryer, coffee &tea, a fan, extra blankets and a huge comfy bed. The breakfast was fab! We were in room one. It was cold and nothing we tried made the room warmer but in the end we were warm enough without any heat on….
However our stay was definitely over priced, and there were issues that needed addressing.
We were not informed in advance that our sea view we were paying a lot of money for was blocked by scaffolding and dirty windows.
Also The bathroom had a toilet that didn’t flush properly, a bath mat that was slippy, and a shower head that needed replaced and very weak water pressure. It was a very disappointing shower experience!! And some of the tiles were mouldy.
Also the nasty dirty rope key ring could do with being replaced!!
One of those hotels where u really want to give them a great review but there are just some basic things they could do so much better, and having a crappy shower is pretty much unforgivable when ur paying over £150

Stayed here in 2021 had a really pleasant stay, booked as a Christmas present for the family in Apr22 but decided to book the front facing room for the view and the experience was not good. Arrived with only 3 beds when it was booked for 4 people, said they couldn't accommodate 4 people in the room I showed them how the website had let me add on an extra bed in a 3 person room they said it shouldn't have done that and got us a mattress for the floor for the 4th person and said they would remove the extra charges, it was cramped but we agreed on the condition the extra charged were removed. In the morning when we were checking out they said they couldn't remove the charges as we had an extra bed, told them we wouldn't be back and we wouldn't be recommending. Attitude of the manager was very poor, they obviously don't want returning families. Very disappointed after a favorable experience the first time, all extra touches of dog treats etc that were added on the first stay were missing from this stay, definitely lacked the personal friendly touch. We thought this was going to be our new favorite place to go after the first experience but have decided not to go back

Decided to try the Bistro even if we heard some poor comments. Booked a table & arrived to a nice welcome on a miserable evening. Had a very nice window table & waitress was prompt to see to our requests. We both ordered Seafood Linguine with a nice white wine. Meal arrived well presented smelling delicious and tasted excellent loads of seafood in a nice broth, pasta really nicely cooked. We ordered cheesecake for dessert, still drooling. Staff attentive while letting you enjoy the evening. Don,t know where poor review came from it was all so good for us could not fault anything.

As soon as we walked in the door we felt very welcome and that didn't change over the week. Our dog poppy was made to feel very welcome and not an inconvenience at all. Charlotte and the team couldn't have been nicer and went above and beyond to make our stay very special. We had a lovely room, very comfortable bed and a great shower but the best thing about our room was the view which was stunning. There could be more storage in the bedroom for thoes visitors who are staying for more than a few days. Lovely breakfast, particularly lovely sausages and tomatoes. Being dog friendly seems to be unusual in northern Ireland but at the salty dog dogs are as welcome as humans. We found northern Ireland generally to be very unwelcoming to guests with dogs so going back to the salty dog every evening was lovely as we knew poppy would be welcomed with a bowl of water and lots of treats. We will definitely be visiting again.

There are irons and ironing boards available. Just let reception know when you arrive. Otherwise we have a couple of drycleaners we use who could press suits ... would probably need about 1/2 a day though.
