What a magical place to just be and relax with the added attraction of being really close to nature. Anya and Emma have always made us welcome and given us the feeling that they would do anything possible to make our stay the best experience we could have. Having stayed in Pencarrow twice now we’ve come to love the place, truly a home from home. It has always been very clean, well presented and maintained. The kitchen has everything you need for either home cooking or bringing in food. The lounge area is spacious with plenty of comfy seating and even a T.V. to watch if you’re exhausted from having fun around the farm. The bedrooms are super comfortable and the en-suite disinfected within an inch of its life. The grounds are superb with plenty of areas for the children to play in with age appropriate equipment as well. The highlight of the holiday is the morning walk round the farm with either Anya or Emma giving a running commentary on what is happening on the farm and how the animals are being looked after. The transition from Fiona and Nick’s stewardship of the farm to Anya and Emma’s goes from strength to strength, well done the two of you. We look forward to coming back soon.

We have been coming to coombe for 10 consecutive years with our children. They look forward to it all year and no matter where we take them in the world, this is the holiday they talk about most! We now have a teenager and we thought he might outgrow the farm, but every year we find new adventures in Cornwall that keep the children entertained. Our eldest also still enjoys the feed run and can catch a goose after many years of practise! The farm is beautiful, and over the last few years Anya and Emma have re-vamped the place. The games room is great and we have many a competitive table tennis/ pool match in the evenings or on a rainy day. The sound of the river is soothing and calming and Anya and Emma potter round the farm and are always on hand to help, educate or generally catch up on your day. As a family they try out local attractions with their children so you get an honest view on what Cornwall has to offer and through discussion you can decide if it would suit you as a family. Throughout the years my children have completed the “farm run” in all weathers and generally end up muddy, dirty and extremely happy. It’s quite refreshing that I’ve had the opportunity to allow my children the freedom to explore in a safe environment without restriction. If you’re an extremely clean person who is obsessed with hygiene you may struggle as it’s a farm in the countryside. The lodges are clean and spacious but you will get the odd creepy crawlie in your lodge and within the first few hours of arriving the carpet needs a vacuum because the children are trampling the outside indoors, but who cares, the children are exploring and having fun and have a beaming smile on their face! Also they touch and interact with animals so will need to wash hands, but again I personally feel this is beneficial for their mental well-being rather than a health hazard as perceived by some. There is a washing machine in the lodge which I find is a great addition for when the kids get clothes muddy and saves me over packing the car. We don’t use tumble dryers (especially with the high energy prices in the UK at the minute) but they are on hand in a communal area if the weather is against you but we use the maidens or washing lines provided in the lodges. The lodges are cosy and warm because they have solar panels and under ground heating systems so even on wet days things dry overnight. The lodges have brilliant play rooms and these are a great space for the kids to let off steam and they have a variety of toys. The lodges are well priced for the beautiful location and because Coombe only have 6 lodges we love that it’s not over crowded like other locations in Cornwall. I wouldn’t come back year on year if it wasn’t fantastic or recommend to family and friends. Anya and Emma are fabulous hosts and run a very successful family farm and holiday retreat that we highly recommend. Don’t hesitate when booking, I can guarantee you’ll be a returner, like 80 percent of their bookings.👍

An amazing holiday surrounded by nature and lots of adorable friendly animals. The Guinea pigs were the family favourites. The whole site was safe and family friendly, the lodge was spacious and clean could not ask for it to have been any better.

Coombe Mill is an absolutely stunning site, I could write all day long about the biodiversity and geography of the site. Its truly a highly valuable haven for wildlife, and we are so lucky to be able to witness and share it! Set near to the start of the River Camel with no industry, excessive monoculture or building sites upstream so the water runs pure and clean, which is a rarity to find. We read about the River Camel which is a special area of conservation before we travelled. One of the times we were talking to Anya she mentioned they'd hoped to knock down some of the older buildings and replace with Scandinavian log cabins which is a wonderful idea. There are restrictions in place which require biodiversity around the river to be protected and enhanced, particularly focusing on minimizing phosphate pollution. Anya had a negative opinion of this regulation saying it would stop the plans as they would be required to plant hundreds of trees, I personally don't see that as an obstacle or negative. Habitats and wildlife - especially areas as unique and thriving as Coombe Mill and the River Camel area need protecting at all costs. Humans should strive to be stewards and protectors of the land, Emma and Anya are very lucky/fortunate to be able to care for such uniquely biodiverse land. I am surprised that more sustainable measures aren't being added to site - such as rainwater harvesting and solar, it could be a great financial and environmental investment. The Cabins/Holiday homes are practical, cosy and welcoming in design. The furniture is mostly solid pine which is really good quality. The beds were also excellent quality and actually the comfiest mattresses - which is so needed after a long day exploring! The addition of the smallholding and daily tractor rides to feed and interact with the animals is wonderful and special. I studied Horticulture and Agriculture and my Husband studied Horticulture and Ecology, we both grew up on farms/small holdings however we're unable to give the same experience for our children so we leaped at the chance to give them a week on a small holding in beautiful surroundings. Our youngest particularly thrived, having physical, cognitive and emotional developmental difficulties it was a truly beautiful to see him thriving, he made great progress with his physical skills and speech in just one week. Although we do live in a Fenland Countryside village surrounded by fields and frequently visit woodlands, it does not compare to spending a week truly immersed in Cornish Countryside and wildlife! Emma the Farmer obviously adores all the animals and is a natural with the children, she is patient, kind and informative when the children asked questions. The children were ecstatic to take home an egg each day, help with feeding, hold the chickens and pet the goats and pigs. I've never seen them so continuously happy for an entire week! The location is also perfect for dozens of wonderful tourist attractions and local gems, an easy drive to multiple beaches, forest/woodland walks, farm parks, museums, and even a huge soft play (kidz world). Unfortunately, there's some negatives as well, that has meant I've put off writing this review however I feel its important people know exactly what they're getting for their money so they can make a choice. The holiday cabin/home was disgusting! We both grew up on farms, we know how dirty/dusty agriculture and living in the countryside is, we know its difficult to keep on top of. However, there is no excusing the state of the cabin we stayed in. We spent hours on the first day cleaning. The bathrooms hadn't been cleaned, the shower even had hairs in it (and not the kind from heads). The kitchen drawers were filled with crumbs, the carpets hadn't been hoovered and had animal hair stuck in the edges, the kitchen tiles and cupboards thick with sticky grease and grime, the kitchen appliances over 20 years old, the dishwasher was broken on the front and didn't clean the dishes at all, the washing machine was the smallest I've ever seen and didn't fully spin, several bulbs around the property were blown, there were dead flies and thick dust on every window sill and picture. There is a tumble drier available - in a separate building and costs £1 for 20 minutes - one tiny load costs us £3 to dry! The kitchen was a mixed bag; there was plenty of basic crockery, mugs, glasses, cutlery and pans and good condition/quality, however the utensils and tools looked like the reject section from the charity shop, with utensils older than me! The 'toys' were broken and in my opinion an actual danger - disgusting stains on the rocking horse which looked suspiciously like urine, a ride on that was peeling and flaking pieces, and a couple odd toys that didn't make a set. The cushions on the sofa were a disgusting brown colour and were sticky they were so dirty. I hid all the toys and cushions the first night we got there and I am so thankful we packed our own bedding and toys! The cot provided in the main bedroom is not even EU compliant (let alone UKCA), the mattress is more than 20 years old and definitely not safe for a toddler or baby to sleep on, the cot frame looks vintage and I suspect could be lead paint which is a huge danger. We covered it with a blanket in the corner of the room so the children couldn't touch it. (but I am over cautious with vintage/antique items, most people would be unbothered by this) The 'play room' which is actually similar to a temporary office or portacabin, looks like it hasn't been cleaned since winter, it looked like a Halloween scene with how many cobwebs there were over everything. The walls had patches of mold and fungus, the toys covered in dust, cobwebs and dead flies. The guinea pig shed which is something my children were extremely excited for was shocking, there were dozens of malnourished guinea pigs in one shed, interbreeding! They were cleaned only once a week (we asked how often they are cleaned), it doesn't appear they deep clean or disinfect at all, their water bottles were leaking which meant the entire floor became a poop soup sludge! The guineapigs were walking through it so they were dirty, the children needed baths and new outfits after ever visit. The guineapigs were overrun with mite, the worse outbreak I've ever witnessed which we were reassured was being treated but I saw no evidence of that. Its extremely easy to treat mite and shouldn't take more than 8 days to eradicate them with treatment and cleaning. When we approached the owner about cleanliness we were dismissed with 'oh I know who cleaned that property, I'll have a word with them about doing a better job' however, this is clearly not a one off, one week problem, the kitchen has months of grime build up, the entire property has suffered neglect for a long time. The second time we approached Anya about the play room we were dismissed with 'oh that's the nature of living in the countryside' as if anyone living in the countryside has never heard of cleaning! The owners moved from being teachers in a City to Coombe Mill only a few years ago, having worked on similar sites (before becoming disabled) I know how high the work load must be for them doing it alone (and with children to care for), I suspect they are struggling to manage the work load of both a smallholding and holiday lets. However, there are options - accept less bookings or employ someone to reduce the work load, I don't feel its fair for families to be paying such a high price for inadequately maintained and cleaned cabins. So that's my review, the good and the bad. The kids desperately want to go again and it was a wonderful experience for them which I am grateful for. Would I recommend Coombe Mill? it depends on perspective and what you expect/hope for from a holiday. If you're happy with cleaning on arrival, your kids are a bit older so hygiene is less of a priority, and can tolerate the outdated/broken appliances and bulbs, if you love adventure and wildlife - you are onto a winner! If you want a low stress, relaxing holiday in a home that's fully functional and equipped, or like us - have young children and disabilities so cleaning is very strenuous and hygiene is essential - I would not recommend. (I've edited this review to add photos after the owners reply to my google review accused me of defamation. I've not added all the photos I took as I feel this would make the photos on trip advisor unbalanced. I do not intend to make any false statements or damage their passion and business, I just like to write reviews and with that I am honest about the good and the bad so people can make their own choice. I am also disabled so we chose this specific holiday based on that - that there was a dishwasher and laundry facilities provided, cleaning is particularly strenuous for me personally so this impacts my opinions and review (at home I have a carer and cleaner to assist me). Most people do not find cleaning or carrying washing to the tumble drier room strenuous so the majority of people should not be negatively affected by this review, but for some people that may be affected by these issues, I hope this review will help them make an informed choice if this is the right place for their needs. )

My favourite place. We travel all over the world. We are lucky to be able to see some pretty cool things but we keep coming back to coombe. It’s a hidden gem that gives you access to Cornwall but with the tranquility of a private escape in the valley away from hoards of people. Wake up and go for a walk around the farm, do the feed run, look after the animals, go out for the day, come back and go fishing or have a wander up to the pub. Anya and Emma have taken over from Fiona and Nick and have added their own flair it just gets better every time we come down. Over the year I have seen salmon, brown trout, eals, hoopoes, buzzards, kingfishers and last year we even got to encounter two wild otters. We have stayed at various farms and choose to live in a semi rural location but I would urge everyone to take a moment and go and enjoy the delights of true country living at its absolute best.

We’d previously stayed at Coombe Mill under the previous owners Nick and Fiona, who were very welcoming. Anya and Emma are the new owners and have managed to keep everything we loved previously and added a few new touches. Our girls loved the games room and were in there most days, as well as the guinea pig shed and the play area. A particular highlight was the feed run and I enjoyed learning about the animals from Anya and Emma. The lodge was clean with plenty of space for the four of us. Internet connection varied but this is explained on the website and didn’t affect our stay, it’s definitely a part of getting away from it all! I found both Anya and Emma to be friendly and very kind when taking to our children. My daughter wanted to hold a duck and Emma very patiently talked her through it and helped her and on Anya’s morning she was showing my other daughter a nest of eggs and answering her (many!) questions. This attentiveness by both owners was very much appreciated and made our experience all the better. My younger daughter in particular was very upset to leave and I take that as a sign of a good holiday! Thank you Anya and Emma, I hope we will return one day!

We stayed in the Polzeath lodge at Coombe Mill for a week in May 2022. It was our first week away with our two year old twins and we could not have chosen a better place. The lodges are clean and comfortable, with everything a family needs including dish washes, washing machine and dryer. The upstairs area is a play area for the children, which is a life saver when your kids get up at 5 am and need entertaining until it's a more sociable hour to lay outside. The tractor rides in the morning with Emma and Anya are fantastic and my boys loved it. There are plenty of beaches, National Trust and other places to visit in the area. We will hopefully return in 2023.

This was just brilliant- accommodation was spacious, warm and well equipped. The farm itself was a delight with so much to see and do. We didn’t have any children with us this time but will definitely be back with them - they would just adore it! Thank you Emma and Anya, you’ve made this place amazing!

We booked a log cabin holiday at Coombe Mill holiday farm. All we really wanted was peace and quite where we could come and go as we pleased. I would say if you have a young family it would be great to take them for the nature walks look at the animals plus fishing and there a small river. Personally my wife and her sister just wanted a complete rest It was excellent. I never stayed in a log cabin before but I will definitely go again. The log cabin was clean and really don’t have a bad thought about it.

We’re back again - 10 years on the trott. Our favourite place. Calm and tranquil. Then the kids wake up and the farm comes alive! Anya, Emma and Kids have given a new lease of life to the place. Their kids are amazing and ours spend most of the day asking when we can go back so they can play. Looking forward to many more years making memories.
