Robin & Louella Hanbury-Tenison have handed over Cabilla Manor to their son Merlin and his wife Lizzie and have built themselves a lovely new house close by. Right in the heart of Poldark country on the edge of Bodmin Moor, this is a working farm surrounded by acres of ancient woodland and open moorland. There are horses, Highland cattle and sheep. The farm is currently being re-wilded to make the environment even more enchanting. Walks through the woods, across Bodmin Moor and along many footpaths are all close by. Half an hour's drive from both north and south coasts, spectacular Cornish beaches, fishing villages and many famous gardens, including the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the astonishing Eden Project are easily reached. The Old Deer House is an exciting contemporary building with glorious views over the countryside. There are two attractive double bedrooms for bed and breakfast guests. One has a Four Poster double bed and the other double can be made into a twin. Both bedrooms have en suite bathrooms with both shower and bath. The new home of explorer Robin and his wife Louella, who has been all over the world with him, The Old Deer House, is full of books he has written and interesting artefacts brought back from their travels. Their home is beautifully decorated and furnished and guests are looked after wonderfully. You will receive a warm welcome; tea on arrival, drinks, and we are happy to book you a table somewhere local for supper.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Old Deer House is, hands down, the best bnb we have ever experienced. If you want to be truly taken care of, but somehow also feel completely free to be, this is the place. If Louella and Robin give a recommendation, take it, they really know Cornwall and will direct you to the best, most interesting places. The bedroom, private, beautiful, with art all around you, contains one of the most comfortable beds ever, like being enveloped in a warm dream, fully prepared by a hot water bottle that magically appears at bedtime. Louella and Robin are impeccable hosts. Robin, who was an explorer, having written scores of books, and Louella who was once the Sheriff of Bodmin (among other talents), are well-travelled and able to tell glorious stories of their rich, adventurous past - so conversation around their table, in addition to the lovely food and drink, beautifully served in their conservatory, is equally enriching! We happily, highly recommend The Old Deer House!

It may be there is a better B&B than at The Old Deer House, but you would be hard pressed to find it!! Louella and Robin have a happy knack of welcoming their guests as though part of the family, which continues throughout one's stay. Bedrooms are extremely comfortable, with little extra touches, and breakfasts will easily set you up for the day ahead. Above all, both are excellent converationalists, whether about the many places they have visited or, probabaly, on almost any other subject you may care to suggest! Thank you both for our most recent visit, and we hope to be in touch again quite soon.

Such a beautiful location and great hosts. We stayed 3 nights and were so pampered. We had a great day at the minions and another in Boscastle. Tried out the pond at the old deer house and it was great. So sorry to leave. Thank you Louellla and Robin

Robin and Louella gave us a wonderfully warm welcome. Delicious dinner, washed down by generous amounts of good wine. Then a fantastic breakfast after an excellent night's sleep in very comfortable beds. Entertaining conversation, amusing anecdotes - altogether great fun. And all this in an exceptionally beautiful location, with a magnificent view. Highly recommended.

A wonderful stay. Louella and Robin were the perfect hosts, warm, entertaining and so welcoming. Very comfortable stay in the romantic garden house. Delicious breakfast. Very kind with my 95 year old uncle who stayed in the house and reported it was the most comfortable bed he had ever slept in! Highly recommend.

We had the loveliest time at this beautiful B&B. Louella and Robin are so helpful and generous, my mother and I were visiting as we were going to a wedding nearby. They offered to drop us off and collect us from the venue. Louella booked a a table at a local pub for the evening we arrived. They couldn’t have been more helpful and are wonderful hosts The accommodation is gorgeous. Set in beautiful countryside with stunning views. The beds were incredibly comfortable and the breakfast had everything you could have asked for, fresh fruit, cereal , cooked , toast. Delicious. We would highly recommend to anyone looking to stay in the area and we will definitely be back!!

Thank you so much Robin & Louella for giving us both such a welcome! Your house has an incredible view across the moors and, with the beds being so cosy and the rooms so quiet, we had the best nights' sleep we've had for ages. Your hospitality is second to none (your dinner was amazing Louella and the drinks kept flowing!) and we honestly felt like old friends by the time we sadly had to leave. In addition to all that, and the reason I personally wanted to stay, was the privilege of being in the company of the eminent explorer, Robin, and his lovely wife, Louella. They were more than happy to chat at length about their travels and his influence on geographical science and anthropology, and the wealth of books made freely available to read during guests' visits gave even more of an incite into Robin's extraordinary life. Thank you both for a truly memorable stay - and we sincerely hope to visit again before too long!

The Old Deer House and Hut are one of the finest properties we have stayed at in well over 100 BnB type properties over the years. Not only is the accomodation in an incredibly scenic area on the edge of Bodmin Moor but The Deer Hut was the highlight of our 2 week stay in the UK at 6 different properties! The greatest draw card of all however are Robin and Louella Hanbury-Tenison. They are warm, welcoming, fun, fascinating and an absolute pleasure to be around!
