Robin & Louella Hanbury-Tenison have handed over Cabilla Manor to their son Merlin and his wife Lizzie and have built themselves a lovely new house close by. Right in the heart of Poldark country on the edge of Bodmin Moor, this is a working farm surrounded by acres of ancient woodland and open moorland. There are horses, Highland cattle and sheep. The farm is currently being re-wilded to make the environment even more enchanting. Walks through the woods, across Bodmin Moor and along many footpaths are all close by. Half an hour's drive from both north and south coasts, spectacular Cornish beaches, fishing villages and many famous gardens, including the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the astonishing Eden Project are easily reached. The Old Deer House is an exciting contemporary building with glorious views over the countryside. There are two attractive double bedrooms for bed and breakfast guests. One has a Four Poster double bed and the other double can be made into a twin. Both bedrooms have en suite bathrooms with both shower and bath. The new home of explorer Robin and his wife Louella, who has been all over the world with him, The Old Deer House, is full of books he has written and interesting artefacts brought back from their travels. Their home is beautifully decorated and furnished and guests are looked after wonderfully. You will receive a warm welcome; tea on arrival, drinks, and we are happy to book you a table somewhere local for supper.

My wife and I had the most wonderful stay at the old deer house Bodmin.
Our hosts Louella and Robin were absolutely magnificent(sincere apologies to you both for the late review.

Ok where do I start, this could be a longish review.
I suppose first and foremost the cleanliness of the whole place was.

Second
The immaculate the setting of the accommodation.

You are greeted by a private road from the a30 that takes you through their wonderful massive estate passing through farm land with the most fantastic views you could ever imagine With wild horses and cattle on route that leads into the the old deer house itself.

Once there you will be greeted by Louella and Robin
With the most friendliest of welcomes you will probably ever experience.

Our room had a four poster massive sized bed with beautifully presented furniture bathroom and all the luxury facilities one could ever imagine.
Bed was luxurious enabling a very comfortable peaceful sleep.
Room was spotless.

Next the views..

From the enormous canopy/veranda with a beautiful patio area to sit outside the house you are greeted by the most stunning views of the country estate with sheep and horses roaming to the hillsides

Breakfast.

Incredible,

Louella goes out of her way to ensure that you have everything you want from Personal variations/requests of her full cooked breakfast to whatever else you could possibly want.

Best cooked breakfast my wife and I I ever had.
And believe me I can cook myself.

Next Robin and Louella.

If you take the time during your stay to interact with Robin and Louella you have the most fascinating insight into the history of their lives and the many places Robin has explored all over the world, not to mention the scores of books he has written during his lifetime so far

The warmth friendliness and the way we were personally looked after was first class and we both had a wonderful experience and will defiantly be returning next year.

Louella and Robin we thank you both and hope this review finds you are both well at this time.

Kindest regards

With over 20 yrs. of experience Louella has refined the art of knowing what is needed to satisfy the expectations of the most discerning guest. Everywhere you look it is clear that all possible guest comforts have been carefully considered. Starting with a beautiful home which oozes a unique personality set in breathtaking countryside, a large inviting sitting room is available for guests' sole use and comfortable beds are warmed with hot water bottles when needed. A comprehensive breakfast timed to suit the guests is provided. Hosts provide detailed advice about what to see, where to dine and how to get there and back bearing in mind the isolated location and meandering country lanes. Louella and Robin provide a warm welcome and entertaining conversation and the Westies, Maisie and Myrtle, are glad to greet guests as well. Stay at The Old Deer House and you won't be disappointed.

What a fabulous place our hosts Robin and Louella have in Bodmin. We would thoroughly recommend it to couples and families alike.
We were welcomed with tea and cakes and truly entertained by our warm and friendly hosts. The Old Deer house is beautifully appointed and the views across the open countryside are simply stunning.
Perfectly placed in Bodmin The Old Deer House enabled visits to both of the Cornish coasts and on our rainy day The Eden Project.
Although The Old Deer House is a relatively new venture Robin and Louella are old hands as B&B hosts and that certainly showed in their attention to every little detail.
The huge comfy bed and the fabulous breakfast and evening G&T’s did not disappoint in any way.
We will be back!

Robin and Louella were the perfect attentive hosts, in a very welcoming and friendly house. This is a quiet, relaxed location in the moors and would suit a wide variety of guests. My own stay involved travelling to family elsewhere in Cornwall but I was made to feel part of their family during the time I was at the house.
I wished I had more time to spend closer to the Deer House, to enjoy chatting about travel and to follow up on their recommendations for local restaurants.
The house itself is very luxurious and comfortable but it was the hosts themselves who made the stay special.

The Old Deer House is in a beautiful position - surrounded by moorland and fields - half way between the North and South coasts. We stayed in a lovely, clean, quiet room full of charming and unique items collected on Robin and Louella's travels. We were offered tea and cake on our arrival and drinks before we went out to eat. Breakfast was beautifully cooked and conversation was always interesting. We could not have been made to feel more welcome and look forward to returning in the future!

Louella and Robin are exceptional hosts welcoming you into their beautiful home and chatting about their extraordinary travels. The scenery, horses, dogs, and chickens make you feel very relaxed and secluded but it is a great location for exploring all areas of Cornwall. When we returned in the evening we were offered drinks and would sit under the verandah with beautiful views.

We spent five nights at the Old Deer House and had a really enjoyable stay. Louella and Robin are very warm and hospitable hosts, and we also enjoyed getting a friendly welcome each day from Maisie and Myrtle their two West Highland Terriers! Their guest house is located in beautiful countryside with great views, and we were also pleased with our room which had a very comfortable bed and powerful shower. We would wholeheartedly recommend a stay here.

Spectacular property set in a secluded countryside setting. Surrounded by beautiful hills, lakes and wildlife.
Robin and Louella welcomed us with tea and cake, and we were treated like extended family throughout our 3 day 2 night stay.
The bedrooms were very comfortable and the full English breakfast set us up perfectly to explore Cornwall.
Ideal spot for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle, but still be in reach of all the favourite attractions around Cornwall.

We stayed for three nights and had an amazing time. Both Louella and Robin are fabulous hosts and made us feel very welcome. Louella has a wealth of knowledge of the surrounding area and has very interesting tales to tell. Louella gave us lots of tips as to where to eat and places to visit all of which were really helpful.
The room was beautiful with a very comfortable four poster bed, ensuite bath, toilet and shower, and included all you needed for your stay.
The sitting room was amazing, very comfortable, beautifully decorated and very welcoming. The ground and view from the deer house are exceptional.
Louella's breakfast freshly prepared and cooked as we requested was very tasty and set us up well for the day. The glass of wine on our return was an unexpected delight.
It is obvious that both Louella and Robin enjoy having guests in their home and we thank them for making our holiday!!
We would highly recommend people visit and experience their 5 star accommodation and welcome but also the five star hosts!

Louella and Robin are excellent hosts, and they went to great lengths to make sure that my stay was extremely comfortable and enjoyable. The views from the Old Deer House are wonderful, and the lovely rooms are equipped with everything that a guest could want.
I would be very happy to recommend the Old Deer House to anyone who wants to spend time in this beautiful peaceful location, it is certainly at the top of my list of great places to stay.
