Detailed Reviews
Perched on the edge of town, right in the front with great views of the promenade and Grand pier, Marstons, the old colonial is well positioned with its own parking, and across the road to the lovely beach
I booked directly, and it gave us 20% off any food we ordered downstairs, Aaron is a great host who looked after us from when we walked through the door to when we left.
So the room was ok, however the hot water ran a little slowly which made running a bath a bit of a mission. Apart from that, it was a comfortable, clean and warm room.
Food was what you would expect, good quality, variety and reasonably priced. We eat there both nights as it seemed a little pointless to go out in the cold, when you had just what you needed right there, with 20% off.
Breakfast was also good, and worth the extra, full English being of a good size and quality, but equally you could have continental or just cereal.
The place had a nice feel to it, and you were made to feel welcome. I think we will come back, as everything is walkable from here.
One observation is, that it needs a bit of a refresh as it’s obviously been open a while.
It wasn’t a fancy place, but felt homely.

We were supposed to go to a Prague for Christmas but decided to cancel due to covid and didn’t want to risk being stranded abroad. I still wanted to go away to get away and my partner and I decided on Weston. Not everyone’s cup of tea admittedly, but I absolutely love this place and have lots of childhood memories here. We went Christmas Eve to Boxing Day. Typical Weston weather and pretty much rained all the time lol. We arrived and were very welcomed. Couldn’t check in til mid afternoon but had free parking at the side of the hotel within a paying car park. We had only booed a double but with no sea view as they were booked. However, we were told we could have a family room upgrade which had a partial sea view towards the marina. Christmas Day breakfast was bought to your room, rather than sit down. Appreciate they had a Christmas morning to celebrate, plus had to sort the dinner crowd out. Was more than happy with my continental breakfast in bed with a personalised Christmas card. Boxing day breakfast was served in the pub restaurant and had a cooked breakfast. Very nice. We ordered a Christmas Day meal for just under £50 for 3 courses. Well worth it and saves on dealing with shopping and washing up. Lovely meal. Rooms were basic, but clean and tidy. Why would you go spend all your time in the room anyway??? To sum up, lovely hotel, food and people. Thank you

Went here for dinner with friends and due to the current climate left feeling a little bit disconcerted.
A group of 6 of us - 2 families with children in tow. The place is doing the eat out to help scheme so food was a bargain. The children enjoyed it but as an adult felt you got what you paid for. On the whole the food wasn't bad and portion size was good.
My issues are with the fact that we weren't asked to sanitise even though they were placed around the pub and were not asked to fill in any track and trace forms. There didn't seem to be any cleaning of tables between groups and for the first time felt that having this virus wasn't a serious consideration. I hope this was a one off on a busy evening.

Although room 5 was a spacious room it felt very tired in decor, especially the bathroom. I found hair and fluff on the bathroom floor, the hot tap on the basin was at an angle and I finally discovered to get it to work you had to turn it on the opposite way, the window wouldn't open, if I had wanted a bath I couldn't as no plug but just a very large hole, there was a lot of wear/marks around the pipes and skirting board areas as if you were in an older house that hadn't had anything done to it for many years, and the back of the toilet bowl near the top of the rim had marks. I had forgotten my slippers so walked around the room in my flat shoes as I couldn't bear the thought of my feet touching the flooring in either room. Also because the bathroom window wouldn't open the room was too warm to get a decent sleep as obviously due to safety the window in the bedroom area only opened so far. And finally the 2 mugs provided were not totally clean. If I had been on the show 'Four in a bed' I would have paid no more than £45, rather than the £75 charged on a Thursday in June. It is a shame that Marstons haven't updated the rooms so that everything is clean and bright. The furniture itself is fine but flooring, paintwork, old bathroom fittings all need changing if you're going to charge at least £75 per night, at weekends and during school holidays.
Even the reception was very tired and wherever you walked there were many squeaky floorboards, including the stairs.
On the positive, the 2 members of staff we met were lovely. The curtains in the bedroom really blocked out the light. The location was perfect for our needs as we were attending an event at the Winter Gardens just 5 minutes walk away. There was free parking, and you have a kettle with tea/coffee/biscuits and a hairdryer.

We have stayed here about 6 times and always been good, location parking etc but it has gone down so much which we are very disappointed about. First of all the lobby and reception were very untidy. I on the way up to our room, which was on the top floor we noticed how tired and dirty it was. The doors and kick plates at the bottom were dirty. In our room the draw curtains were very dusty and there was mold in the bathroom and the bath panel and skirting were not clean. One day we went back to our room and had to climb over dirty sheets and shower curtains which had been thrown on the stairs. Breakfast wasn't that nice, coffee was awful. 2 staff members were pleasant a waiter and the cleaner. The Manager and some staff need to do customer service course as they have not got a clue. Manager seemed like he didn't want to be there, never said good morning etc just looked miserable. It's looking very tired and needs refurbishing. The price we paid was too much for what we had, we have had better for less. I really don't recommend this place now, and it's a shame as we liked it here. We won't be going back

We stayed at this hotel on the 5th August for 1 night. The receptionist and managers were fantastic, so welcoming and friendly. We weren't going to have our evening meal here after reading some reviews but in the end we did and it was fantastic! The burgers were excellent. The kids meals were very reasonably priced and they loved their meals to! Fantastic breakfast! Fantastic customer service! Fantastic evening meal! Thankyou! Highly recommend! Parking for guests is FREE and right next to the hotel in the pay and display car park.

Excellent location on sea-front. Great value and quality food. Welcoming friendly staff. Free parking next to pub/hotel. We booked direct with MARSTONS and got a great sea-view room (really good view from room), and got 20% off meal as a result.
If you are visiting Weston, then this is a good choice. We stayed in room 7. Large room with bed, sofa/bed and good wardrobe. One thing to mention though..,lots of stairs to get to our room, but we knew when we booked, so no problem. Literally across the road from beach and promenade, and five mins walk from high street.

I had the most gorgeous meal at lunchtime. It was the chicken, leek and cider pie.I was amazed at how lovely it was! The vegetables were fresh and cooked to perfection, too and we were served by a very efficient and pleasant young lady. All in all,it was a nice experience and I look forward to visiting again.

We visited the old colonial on Mother’s Day for an overnight stay while visiting family in Weston.
We decided for ease to eat in the pub as we like our local Marston pub however completely disappointed by the food. Kids meals were ok but Sunday lunches that we ordered were mushy veg which was barely edible.
The room in the hotel was ok. Plenty of space but a little outdated and in need of repair. The floor squeaked whenever you walked on it at any point in the room and the toilet sounded like it was trying to take off whenever you flushed it. We stayed on the first floor and the music from the pub was quite loud in the room, not ideal but probably unavoidable.
The breakfast was great and a good selection for us all and a decent price.

This was a sad review to make to be honest, we came 8 years ago and stayed at the Colonial and it was so lovely, we often come to WSM up to 4 times a year to walk the dog and always come to the pub for a drink and food, After falling really poorly I couldn't go on a trip aboard so cheered myself up and decided to have a night away here at the Old Colonial.. We arrived to the reception early but there was noone on reception and a very small chalk board hidden that we didn't see stating 'this isn't manned till 2pm', although a lady came out from the bar area after we rang the bell twice and checked us in early which we were greatfull for as only wanted to check the Car in. We were advised at check in that the wardrobe door was missing (not an issue). Entering the room it was light and airy, There was no hairdryer in the room although this was advised on the website & booking . Com that there was one. This was quickly delt with. Then on further inspection everywhere was dirty, there was dust and dirt on every window seal, thick inch dust on all skirting boards, the TV had finger and hand prints all over it, the mirrow on the desk was full of dust, the bathroom had dirt and soap scum still on the tiles, the bathroom bin was not even emptied and had the guests stuff from the day before in it, the carpet had sharp bits of plastic and lots of bits and also food bits under the desk, after being really ill and having Asthma I couldn't ignore this anymore and spoke to reception who came and gave it another clean and explained the staff unfortunately don't get enough time to clean. after the clean we came back in to make a coffee and then I was horrified even more, the kettle had coffee stains all over it and water left in it, had lots of lime scale, the tea bags were broken and wet and totally useable, the tea tray had which looked like months worth of dust and bits in it and the coffee cups were not cleaned and had someone's dried coffee inside them, once we washed these ourselves with our own soap the cups came up super clean, not forgetting the coffee stain underneath the tray. The shower was also a laugh, my watering can could showers better than that thing! I didn't want to check the drawers but the bed side drawer had plastic rubbish in,
I will say what you have right is the Mattress, it was super comfy and although from the stress of the cleanliness once we cleaned it ourselves, we sleep nicely. Noone was on reception when we left apart from a basket to put your key in.. Not a great experience unfortunately.
