Old Whyly is a Grade II listed Georgian Manor house and part of the new concept of luxury boutique bed and breakfast private houses where guests are made to feel more like friends than customers. Offering charming accommodation filled with antique furniture and pictures with the opportunity to dine and experience outstanding food, Old Whyly is the perfect place to escape and enjoy the stunning countryside with its historic attractions of East Sussex in an elegant atmosphere. The long history of Old Whyly dates back to 1100 with the kitchen retaining its medieval characteristics. There are very strong connections to America and the English civil war. Old Whyly is a place for all seasons. In the spring the garden comes to life with rhododendroms, azaleas, daffodils and tulips creating a blaze of colour continuing with its flowering summer and autumn plants and trees. The lily scented terrace with its rose covered pergola is well used on sunny days and warm summer evenings as is the drawing room with the blazing fire in winter. You can also enjoy lovely walks through the adjoining private estate with its wild flowers and rare orchids at any time of the year. Guests can play tennis on the new hard court or laze by the secluded swimming pool with its wisteria covered pool house. This is truly a suave swipe at the old cliche B & B.

This is a bed and bed and breakfast to dream of. Not cheap, but very good value. If you want a day or two in luxury this is the place to go. We went for two nights, on one of which we went to Glyndebourne which is 10 to 15 minutes away by taxi. Our hostess was charming and she and her housekeeper were incredibly helpful and very friendly without being in any way assertive. The drawing room and dining room are charming and the bedrooms and bathrooms are delightful as well as very practical. The very extensive garden is really something else. Tea and lemon cake, and a pre-breakfast cup of coffee, on the terrace were, in a way, highlights of our stay. The boys enjoyed the use of the hard tennis court with balls and racquets provided by our hostess. The dinner, on the night we stayed in, was excellent. A couple of days and nights of relaxation and enjoyment. Highly recommended.

A mini-Arcadia….a very special place. An updated and lovingly maintained Georgian house and grounds, no question of in-authenticity here. A delightful dinner (and thank you for the fried bread treat at breakfast!). We certainly hope to come back…….

We’ve been coming to Old Whyly for nearly twenty years now. Sarah and Leah make us feel so welcome when we’re staying with them, we feel like part of the family. Our rooms are always spotless, and the breakfast is wonderful. Do be sure to book dinner at least once when you stay, as it’s always delicious. We tend to visit when it’s cold, so a nice drink in the drawing room by the fire is always a highlight. Many thanks for such wonderful stays over the years! James and Darlene

An exquisite experience from arrival to departure. Wonderful place, lovely decor, attentive non intrusive service and delicious food prepared by our delightful hostess Sarah. Lewes historic town in easy reach with great architecture, historic sites and interesting independent shops. Will happily return to Old Whyly and if you are seeking a relaxing break in a beautiful place I highly recommend a visit.

We had stayed several times before, we had some free days, Old Whyly had had a cancellation, so taking advantage of settled fine weather we arrived ,as always ,to a welcome tea with lemon cake in the glorious gardens , after which we fell asleep , surrounded with lavender bushes by the pool. This is hospitality as it should be , warm atmosphere, comfortable beds, excellent food ( one particular meal was extra memorable) put altogether in a magical setting . Thank you Sarah - and Leah.

But if you’re looking for something a little unique – and more than a little exquisite – we thoroughly recommend a stay! My husband and I just returned from two wonderful nights at Old Whyly and could not have asked for more – or recommend it higher. We arrived rather frazzled (over two years since having time off our two small children, thanks to the pandemic) and it was honestly the first time we have been able to properly switch off and actually relax in so long. Apart from the historic charm and stunning beauty of Old Whyly, the peace of the place is palpable and from the moment we stepped in we felt so looked after and truly away from it all. Sarah’s hospitality was second-to-none, she even braved the recent storm to make sure she had the best ingredients when we asked if we could have dinner for a second night (as the first had been so good!). Dinner was AMAZING (three courses, perfectly matched: beyond-delicious duck, heavenly chicken.. plus divine starters and puddings!), I had to stop myself asking for every single recipe! Breakfast was equally scrumptious (freshly squeezed orange juice, a full-English as good it should be (but rarely is), gorgeous homemade jams and marmalade, beautiful poached plums and yoghurt. We shall cherish the memories of our evening G&T’s by the fire, our lovely chats with Sarah, the peaceful nights’ sleep and the cut-above food (and of course our pat or three with Puzzle the cocker spaniel), plus our walks in the wonderful surroundings. Sarah’s recommendations of things to do, places to walk and local pubs, were also spot on. I don’t say this lightly as die-hard Londoners – but our stay with Sarah has even inspired us to consider moving to the countryside from London! The only negative I can think of was having to leave. We shall definitely be back.

Old Whyly is a beautiful Georgian set in a lovely garden. The accommodation is very comfortable and spacious, with attention to detail. Sarah and her staff give you a warm welcome and a delicious dinner if requested. The large round dining room table makes the mealtimes sociable and convivial.

My wife and I stayed at Old Whyly for two nights. We were met with a warm welcome. Sarah was a wonderful host. So much thought had gone into every aspect of the B and B experience. Nothing was too much trouble, the food was excellent and serviced with style, but in a very relaxed and personable way. From the tea and cake on arrival, to the G n T on the lovely terrace and yummy dinner, the relaxing swim in the pool all set in a beautiful house and gardens, we had a wonderful stay. We would recommend Old Whyly to anyone wanting to treat themselves to a night or two away from home.

Stayed here for 3 nights for a rest and escape post lockdown. Sarah is a wonderful host we were made to feel very welcome. Our room was very comfortable and clean, with a lovely view. The house and grounds are beautiful. Sarah is an amazing cook , the food was delicious. Interesting conversations over dinner with fellow guests made for a very relaxing and enjoyable break. Lea the housekeeper was very efficient and our needs were always met. We look forward to returning in the winter.

You are stunned by Old Whyly even as you approach, as it is such a beautiful building. The gardens and planting are superb, and it took me 10 minutes just to get to the front door, I was taking so many photographs! Sarah is a charming host, and her house is impeccably decorated. When we arrived we were offered a fabulous lemon drizzle cake with tea. If you have dinner in, (which I recommend as Sarah’s cooking is restaurant standard), do be prepared to mingle and eat with other guests. This was actually fun! (And I’m normally quite antisocial ) There is delicious tea in the room, and proper sheets and blankets on the bed- not duvets! I would not hesitate to recommend and I hope to go back before too long. It was a truly restful, and in every sense enjoyable stay.
