Old Whyly is a Grade II listed Georgian Manor house and part of the new concept of luxury boutique bed and breakfast private houses where guests are made to feel more like friends than customers. Offering charming accommodation filled with antique furniture and pictures with the opportunity to dine and experience outstanding food, Old Whyly is the perfect place to escape and enjoy the stunning countryside with its historic attractions of East Sussex in an elegant atmosphere. The long history of Old Whyly dates back to 1100 with the kitchen retaining its medieval characteristics. There are very strong connections to America and the English civil war. Old Whyly is a place for all seasons. In the spring the garden comes to life with rhododendroms, azaleas, daffodils and tulips creating a blaze of colour continuing with its flowering summer and autumn plants and trees. The lily scented terrace with its rose covered pergola is well used on sunny days and warm summer evenings as is the drawing room with the blazing fire in winter. You can also enjoy lovely walks through the adjoining private estate with its wild flowers and rare orchids at any time of the year. Guests can play tennis on the new hard court or laze by the secluded swimming pool with its wisteria covered pool house. This is truly a suave swipe at the old cliche B & B.

We came here for a weekend retreat from London and it was well worth it. The house itself is stunning with spacious rooms and beautiful gardens in a very quiet spot that is superbly located for local walks. Sarah was a charming conversationalist, and a warm, and helpful host, with in-depth knowledge of the best places to eat and visit in the area including recommended walks. Sarah is also an excellent cook. Highlights of our stay included drinks by the fire made specially for us, tea and cake following our day out in the cold, and the delicious dinner prepared with our dietary needs taken into account. The South Downs are a beautiful part of England and there could not be a better place to explore this area from than the Old Whyly - the perfect blend of stately and comfortable. Would definitely stay here again and would be very keen to return in summer to experience the stunning garden. Also an ideal place to stay for those attending Glyndebourne. Highly recommend. Thank you, Sarah!

Old Whyly is a beautiful Georgian set in a lovely garden. The accommodation is very comfortable and spacious, with attention to detail. Sarah and her staff give you a warm welcome and a delicious dinner if requested. The large round dining room table makes the mealtimes sociable and convivial.

We had stayed several times before, we had some free days, Old Whyly had had a cancellation, so taking advantage of settled fine weather we arrived ,as always ,to a welcome tea with lemon cake in the glorious gardens , after which we fell asleep , surrounded with lavender bushes by the pool.
This is hospitality as it should be , warm atmosphere, comfortable beds, excellent food ( one particular meal was extra memorable) put altogether in a magical setting . Thank you Sarah - and Leah.

This is a bed and bed and breakfast to dream of. Not cheap, but very good value. If you want a day or two in luxury this is the place to go.

We went for two nights, on one of which we went to Glyndebourne which is 10 to 15 minutes away by taxi. Our hostess was charming and she and her housekeeper were incredibly helpful and very friendly without being in any way assertive.

The drawing room and dining room are charming and the bedrooms and bathrooms are delightful as well as very practical. The very extensive garden is really something else. Tea and lemon cake, and a pre-breakfast cup of coffee, on the terrace were, in a way, highlights of our stay.

The boys enjoyed the use of the hard tennis court with balls and racquets provided by our hostess.

The dinner, on the night we stayed in, was excellent.

A couple of days and nights of relaxation and enjoyment.

Highly recommended.

Old Whyly, a B&B with a difference, is the home of Sarah, a trim and elegant widow, who runs it on a tight budget with the help of Lea. The Georgian country house, attractively furnished and decorated, is surrounded by well maintained grounds. Breakfast and dinner were beautifully presented though sparse. To me it appeared as if guests were monitored which made me uncomfortable; I did not feel able to relax.

Stayed here for 3 nights for a rest and escape post lockdown. Sarah is a wonderful host we were made to feel very welcome. Our room was very comfortable and clean, with a lovely view. The house and grounds are beautiful. Sarah is an amazing cook , the food was delicious. Interesting conversations over dinner with fellow guests made for a very relaxing and enjoyable break. Lea the housekeeper was very efficient and our needs were always met. We look forward to returning in the winter.

We stayed for a night at Old Whyly as part of a hunt for a calm weekend after a very busy time: we found it in spades. The house and grounds are beautiful, and Sarah and Leah looked after us royally. Sarah cooked us a delicious supper, sitting by the fire before and after was lovely and meeting Minnie was an extra bonus. We will definitely be returning (hopefully when the garden is in full pomp). Thank you, all!

My wife and I stayed at Old Whyly for two nights. We were met with a warm welcome. Sarah was a wonderful host. So much thought had gone into every aspect of the B and B experience. Nothing was too much trouble, the food was excellent and serviced with style, but in a very relaxed and personable way. From the tea and cake on arrival, to the G n T on the lovely terrace and yummy dinner, the relaxing swim in the pool all set in a beautiful house and gardens, we had a wonderful stay. We would recommend Old Whyly to anyone wanting to treat themselves to a night or two away from home.

An exquisite experience from arrival to departure. Wonderful place, lovely decor, attentive non intrusive service and delicious food prepared by our delightful hostess Sarah. Lewes historic town in easy reach with great architecture, historic sites and interesting independent shops. Will happily return to Old Whyly and if you are seeking a relaxing break in a beautiful place I highly recommend a visit.

An excellent place to stay - so good I recommended it to my parents, and there is no higher praise! Friendly and accommodating people, a beautiful garden, lovely house and excellent food. Not inexpensive, but the price reflects the standard.

Dear Highgateglobetrotter, I wish I had read your review and others on Tripadvisor regarding the B&B owner and her housekeeper prior to booking accommodation for myself and my mother. I would then have been more prepared for the extremely cold and unwelcoming attitude, the fact that the housekeeper felt it appropriate to enter our bedroom whenever she liked with no knock on the door - in fact she moved our belongings and made our beds while we were at breakfast. I was told not asked - to not stroke the dog and to move my car. We were informed what time we would eat breakfast, when we declined dinner the temperature in attitude from Sarah the owner went down by several degrees and it was already below freezing. We felt we were in the way of her house party of Belgium guests who were also staying at this B&B when we were. I very much had the impression that because I arrived in my (6 year old) Fiesta I was not the kind of guest they wanted. I was so disappointed in the attitude I received from the owner and staff as I really wanted a lovely relaxing weekend for my Mum - this was her only holiday this year, sadly we were totally mislead from reading the rave reviews from so many other people. We informed Sarah we would not be staying the two nights as we had booked but would be leaving after one, very uncomfortable night, and were again "told" not asked to go and wait for her in the Drawing room while she finished what she was doing. At this point I handed her the cash for our stay and walked out - I have never been treated so disdainfully by anyone. Sarah and her housekeeper really need to find another way to supplement their income what is less inconvenient to them. Or they need to screen their guests for appropriateness before letting them book. So my question is more of a comment and an agreement with what you have said and previous guests - why oh why did I only read the good reviews and dismiss the bad?

I'm rather suprised at your treatment in Old Whyly..... it was not our experience. Yes, our rooms were refreshed during breakfast, but that's not a problem as far as I'm concerned - it's not unusual in hotels for beds to be made up and rooms cleaned during breakfast. As to your treatment by Sarah and her staff, I can only assume that your interpretation of her manner was unique to you. Our experience is such that we will want to stay there again next time we go to Glyndbourne.
