Booked this campsite via a phone to reception who were very help, as we arranged last minute due to cancelling our holiday abroad during the pandemic.

I was very unsure as reviews are very poor due to the cleanliness of the lodges and others reported being treated poorly by the staff.

We booked 'Coote Pitch 5' 12m x 12m, which was about 5m from the water. The pitch size is huge, allowing loads of space for our 6 man inflatable tent, guys ropes, car, trailer and then huge area at the front for tables chairs and our kayak & SUP. Electric hook up and water tap along the morrings. I would recommend the screw type pegs, as the ground super rocky & bent most of our pegs. We were very happy with the pitch, as we had a view of all the boats coming in & access to the water for our kayak & SUP.

Our children mainly played in the area on the water in front of our tent. We did go for a paddle up the river towards Beecles, but we turned around as the storm was making paddling difficult. We were told it takes about 1.5 hours each way to paddle to Beecles, so as the kids are small we didn't attempt. It's a shame that there is no pub nearby to paddle too. There is a pub restaurant onsite, but it's not my taste & only a terrace for outside space. We did walk to the White Lion Wheatacre pub White Lion Rd, Beccles NR34 0AT on country roads, which was worth the long walk as yummy food & garden. Lots of nature in the dark on the way home you may need a torch in the evening - spotted owls, bats etc. Beecles is the nearest supermarket we used Morrisons.

The toilets, showers, sink & hairdryer in self contained cubicle are kept very clean and are locked with a PIN code. Easy to get you or young children toilet & showered as enough space, in warm & lockable area.

Playground and indoor swimming pool onsite. We had to book a 30min session bookable the day prior to your session- very strict about social distancing in pool area and no butterfly & backstroke....too much splashing during the pandemic... hopefully this will settle, as the kids don't get they have to keep away from other families in the pool.

If you are not interested in the river then I would choose elsewhere (unless on a Coote pitch), as the camping is very crowded. Unfortunately, the other camping pitches & Yurts looked small & if your idea of camping in a large field is important then this is not the campsite for you.

Negatives
Rocky pitches for camping
Other pitches too close together.
Not suitable for large motor homes.
Yurts not spaced apart

We spent 4 nights in one of the lodges on site. We arrived early afternoon but couldn’t get in until 5pm due to a deep clean being carried out. The lodge was very clean and the facilities as expected. I think the outside of the lodge could have been cleaned as there was a lot of debris etc.
The centre is definitely for boat lovers and campers as has all the amenities for this type of holidaymaker. The usual camp shop was closed and there was only a small shop opened that usually sold ice creams, they did have milk and a few provisions but not enough to keep you going. They were also very expensive. We had to drive into Beccles which is 20 minutes away to buy some provisions. So it’s better to come prepared. The pub on site is called the Waveney Inn and is also the restaurant you had to book a table and they were fully booked one of the nights we tried. The waiting staff there are all very young very pleasant but I felt they had a lot of responsibility on their shoulders and probably working for the minimum wage!

We walked around the river centre on the first day and would have liked to be able to sit down near the water but there are no benches or seating apart from a couple of benches in the children’s play area. For the size of the camp and the occupancy they do not have a lot of facilities to cover the numbers staying.
The hot tub was very good and we used it as much as we could when we stayed in camp. We mostly went out each day as there wasn’t a lot to do there the swimming pool was only open for booked slots 30 minutes due to Covid 19 which we understood.
I definitely think they could have a separate restaurant on site and maybe some entertainment in the evening.
The lodges are expensive to stay in you are paying over £700 for a 4 night stay you don’t get in until 5pm on the day you arrive and you have to leave by 9.30am after the 4th night!
Overall we made the best of our few days as it was the only break so far this year. Nice and relaxing there staff friendly but as my review says some improvements required

Not sadly what we expected so left early . I’m not a camper or a lover of remote places so if you are you may enjoy this . The photos show a hot tub on a balcony in our lodge for 6 called retreat spa - but it’s not like the photos it’s old , in need of cleaning & renovation , the hot tub is at the back of the car park area and the balcony can just sit four at a push , there is no bbq area in the lodge so it was like camping but not eating outside as planned . I was heart broken when I saw it and thought I had a week there.

We think the hot tub filter is faulty as after 4 days it was dirty. When I asked them to clean it I was told it’s fine/normal and just our oil off our skin - see photos would you go in it especially now ?? They did after asking 4 people eventually change it for which I was truly grateful . Our home one never looks like this as our filter works

Cleanliness being a must now means this isn’t the place for me it wasn’t great with a dishwasher that mixes around the dirt only , no dish cloth or washing machine . It was too basic for me but that might suit many

The main issue was it was too remote with a narrow lane to get to it making driving around unappealing . We did the boats which was fun but expensive since you needed full days . To get to a town it took 1.5hrs so be prepared with a picnic which we did and whilst I wouldn’t do it again it was a nice experience

There is a nice play park for the kids And once the pool reopens this would be a nice bonus

The Waveney inn didn’t have enough staff so be prepared to wait , at least 1hr for food, but the manager and her staff were super friendly and attentive . They worked super hard and breakfast there was superb . She tried hard to look after the group and was a credit to the resort we thank her for her kindness

They offer you access across the river to marsh lands but be warned it’s over an hour walk with nothing to see to get anywhere and with kids this proved too much . If you are a bird watcher or want to simply walk this is perfect but for families it was for us a 2hr round trip and both pubs en route were closed which we didn’t know so not a fun morning

Sadly for me this was a huge disappointment after staying in Norfolk resort & spa or forest holiday lodges Thorpe which were modern and clean with access to towns and walks. We would go back to these but sadly they were fully booked

We moved on to Great Yarmouth and found a wonderful hotel for our anniversary night thankfully so it ended well

If like camping and quiet this could be for you but if you like getting out , comfort and activities this isn’t for you

In fairness the manager changed our towels and approved the hot tub cleaning so we are grateful for this . Manager of the inn lovely but the receptionist Louise could of diffused my upset but made it worse rude and unfriendly she even messed up our boating booking awful service from her . We know next time to triple check the photos advertising the lodges and read more reviews as perhaps we would of booked something more appropriate for us

We arrived at the Lodge and the man was very welcoming and gave us information. Our lodge was lovely but considering we couldnt check in until 5pm and had to leave by 9am for extensive cleaning, it was not up to standards. The main bathroom had a clogged drain of hair and one of the ensuites had a gummy bear in the corner and the dining room table was incredibly sticky. Making us feel that actually the time was not being used for the extensive cleaning it should have been. I called two days previous to ask for highchair to be added on for my baby, this was not supplied and lady on the phone was incredibly rude and blunt. They did not have a proper highchair available and offered a wooden one from the pub which we declined due to support for my baby. We ordered pizza on the first night from their onsite restaurant, to again be spoken to very rudely by the same member of staff. We ordered two seperate orders, one came and one was 45 minutes late so we called, was put on hold and left on hold. We walked down there and the lady (same as earlier) had forgotten we were on hold and again was very abrasive and rude. The pizza were not nice. One of the twin beds was broken so the mattress sunk into the bed, this was replaced the next day but again not as expected. We hired a boat and this was fantastic, had a great day on the river. Hot tub was nice but couldve been more private, anyone walking past could see us. On the second day we managed to get a highchair but was charged £8 for two nights when its £13 for a whole week, thought extortionate especially considering that one wasnt provided when advised. On our last night we had dinner at the restaurant, the food was lovely and staff very nice and welcoming. The swimming pool changing rooms were shut so you would have had to walk home in the cold wet in ur swimsuit and towel, I had 5 month baby so unfortunately we couldnt use this facility. The onsite shop was shut 3days out of the 4 so we couldnt go in there either. Overall dissapointed for the money paid and expectations we had.One of the beds was broken to mattress was sunken into the bed had to get this changed and also had to buy a kettle due to the kettle being one you placed on a stove and was very slow and loud. Kitchen equipment should be better. More storage for clothes and toiletries, we really struggled with this.

Firstly I’ll start with positive, enjoyed the location and tranquility of it. The positioning next to the river is beautiful but the positioning of the lodges is far from beautiful . Maybe was expecting too much to have a nice view from our lodges, they are rammed together. Constantly see people walking past and you can literally see into all the lodges around. The hot tubs are crammed in and our was positioned in between two neighbouring lodges bedrooms. Just found it too awkward especially when on there on the evening. The lodges are definitely in need of a deep clean, surprising as they ask you to check out at 9am on the departure day to allow for deep clean. Definitely not the case, found the lodges to be tatty in many aspects. Discoloured grouting and silicone, cobwebs and dust everywhere, dirty rusty blinds, mattresses massively dented and horrendous to sleep on. This is definitely not the high end luxury lodges was expecting and for £1600 a week is not really worth it.

The Waveney River Centre is in a fantastic riverside location with undisturbed views over the river and countryside, it’s the perfect place for a relaxing weekend.
Check in was over the phone before we arrived, which was great, thus avoiding the need to venture in to reception which always looked fairly busy.
We did try to contact reception a couple of times during our stay but couldn’t get through, and whilst there is an emergency number, nothing was that urgent to ring them out of hours.
With the exception of the far end of the centre which is a fenced off building site (and looks out of keeping with the rest of the centre) everywhere was well presented, clean and tidy. The camping area looked a bit cramped but lodges were well spaced out with easy access and parking alongside the accommodation.
River activities were easily booked on line and staff, whilst social distancing, were on hand and helpful at the waters edge when departing and returning.
We found the centre to be quiet with guests adhering to social distancing and above all being respectful of others who were holidaying at the centre.
This came very close to being a 5 Star review only let down by a few niggles such as poorly maintained appliances and little bits of dilapidation within the lodge. Whilst none of this detract too much from our lovely stay, when paying top dollar one could reasonably expected these items to have been made good by housekeeping during their post/pre let inspection.
The acid test is would we stay again, undoubtedly yes.

Country Lane to site is ok if you take your time and know how to reverse as sometimes the nearest passing place is behind you. I’ve driven down far worse lanes towing my horse trailer.

Check in was quick and easy, given a map of the site and explained how to get to our lodge, plenty of parking space right outside. It was a Marshside lodge Aldeby Went in and the lodge was clean with all the beds made up and plenty of towels supplied. We noticed the handles on the windows were in poor condition and would be very easy to break in. There was black mould in the en-suite. There was no DVD player as advertised we reported this to reception and all the said was it’s on the back of the TV which it wasn’t. The TV in the master bedroom didn’t work but we reported this and fault was rectified upon our return from a day out. We also reported there were no steps to get into/out of the hot tub to be told they don’t have steps even though the lodge next to us (exactly the same model) had steps, as a health and safety rep, steps are a must have to prevent injury. WiFi in the lodge was non existent even though they advertise lodges have it.

We loved watching the cygnets and swan go by on their feeding expedition every evening. The picture of the different birds that can be seen around the site was really helpful.

We did not use the bar/restaurant or shop so cannot comment. We went to the Norfolk Broads to hire a boat and we didn’t use the ferry. The site is within easy reach of many major tourist attractions.

On check out day the staff came to the rear of the property to see to the hot tub, we expected them to start emptying it, but all the did was put more chlorine in and disappear. We had been on site for a week so it should be changed not to mention the COVID promise that the water is changed after each hire.

Would we stay here again? I don’t think so
Would we recommend to a friend? No

Response from Lisa Holmes, Other at Waveney River Centre
Responded 22 Sept 2021
Thank you for your feedback, we are sorry you didn't feel the lodge was up to standard, we will of course investigate and address this with the relevant departments and take remedial action where appropriate, we do find the use of steps in and out of the hot tub cause more injury than not, they get very slippery etc, sadly the Wifi is intermittent due to our rural location, we are working with local providers to see where we can improve this, the swans are a joy aren't they we are glad you were able to enjoy them. Our hot tubs are indeed emptied, cleaned sanitised and refilled for each guest, what you saw would have been our team adding chemical to the hot tub to neutralise the water before being emptied, it is a very involved process and to protect our environment we simple aren't able to just empty the contaminated water. Thank you for taking the time to feedback.

We wanted a little getaway for NYE, I’ve been to the centre before and stayed in one of the little pods, and the pods are fantastic. However, this time, we decided to stay in one of the Yurts.
The yurts themselves are nice inside, and it was nice and warm on arrival which was very pleasant. It’s completely self catering, so you have to bring everything with you including cutlery, and cups etc, which the details on the website fails to mention. Thankfully we came fully prepared! The woodburner is NOT a stove, as stated on the website, it’s purely a log burner. There is no hob on the top, or no real way to cook anything inside the burner unless you’re having marshmallows for tea! The electrics inside were also dodgy! Several times, the extension lead provided was faulty and the things plugged in kept going off and flickering. The location of the yurt is awful, you’re so close to your neighbours and can hear pretty much everything going on inside someone else’s Yurt! Being NYE, we expected a little noise and was told there would be wardens for noise control etc...there were no wardens so the noise of other people around us continued in to the early hours. We stayed up until around 1am, but the noise continued way beyond this. There is no type of barrier between you and the other person next door, so if you’re sitting on the decking, you’re basically sitting right next to your neighbour. Nothing personal or special about the stay at all. The showers and toilet block is fine, old and a little worse for wear but nothing a little tlc couldn’t solve.

We voiced our concerns to a chap in reception this morning and he was very helpful and took everything on board, so it was nice to know we were heard but unfortunately we will not be returning to waveney river centre.

We paid £20 to moor stern-on on the pontoon. Our boat has a low platform for ease of boarding and it kept getting trapped under the pontoon due to children from the campsite running up and down it.
For a mooring location with electricity and toilets, the price should surely include some sort of security to help with this?

Think it’s a very steep price especially when it’s causing damage to people’s boats.

Spent a week here staying in a lodge for 2.
Check in easy and staff very friendly.
This was a theme for the visit with helpful and friendly staff available when needed.

The lodge with hot tub was in general excellent and very clean. Particularly pleased that hot tub had been emptied, cleaned and refilled.

Now for the negatives. We were provided with just 2 plates, 2 bowls, 2 knives, 2 forks and 2 spoons. How utterly daft!
As my wife said: if we had bacon and eggs with toast and marmalade she would have to wash the knife half way through breakfast.
There was a full size dishwasher but nothing to fill it with so we faced having to wash up after every meal.
We did beg some extra cutlery and crockery from the restaurant but in the end also bought some cheap stuff in Yarmouth.
So my tip is pack your own.

Also, despite having an excellent bathroom there was no two pin socket for shaver/toothbrush so take an adaptor.

We only ate in the restaurant/pub once. It was ok but no great shakes. It felt like a missed opportunity to create a nice cosy pub with decent food. You will find such a pub about five minutes drive away.

Overall we enjoyed our week. The location is lovely and we saw plenty of interesting birds on our walks such as kestrel and Egyptian geese.

It is a really nice place with lovely staff - just let down by the ridiculous notion that two people means you just need two of everything!
