The Celtic Manor Resort garners a mixed bag of feedback, with guests enjoying its stunning location and vibrant atmosphere, complemented by live music and festive decor. However, issues like noise disturbances, dated rooms, and a lack of tranquility have been pointed out by some travelers. Although the service and cleanliness receive praise in instances, there are notable concerns regarding slow staff response, disorganization, and cleanliness inconsistencies. Many guests feel the resort does not offer value for money, with criticism towards the costly extras and service charges.

An experience..

The good
The room was large and the bed was comfortable. Plenty of space in the room and hot drinks were available along with some biscuits.

Elemis toiletries were in the bathroom and the room was tidy and clean (noting the below).

Breakfast: the food was lovely and a wide choice, so no complaints on the breakfast. Limited vegan choices but enough to get by, of note we attended the disco through the ages event and the vegan choices were shockingly bad with very minimal food selection for vegans (the veg was all covered in butter!).

The Bad:
Parking… £20 to park in the underground parking is shocking, especially when paying neigh on £300 a night £283 discounted as at an event. Given the location I find it incredibly appalling that guests are charged so much for parking (more than even the centre of Bath!). Parking is dotted around and it said full but there were spaces in the underground parking lot.

Small things, our room still had evidence from a previous guest with a name tag for an event left on a broken lamp (that was burnt!). This is quite poor for an expensive hotel to not have cleaned the room, the label wasn’t even hidden it was literally stuck on a lamp. Our air con was a bit flaky, we set it to 19 and it decided to heat up to 24.5 degrees before slowly dropping down.

We have stayed at the Celtic Manor numerous times over the years both as a couple and family. Just the little things that have now made us think twice about returning.
Our check in was past 4 pm as they were waiting for the room to be checked. On arrival at the room other people’s luggage was in our room so we had to wait for that to be collected before unpacking and showering etc. It seems it might be a regular thing according to the porter.
In the middle of the night it became really hot in the room which made for a disturbed sleep for ourselves and the children. We attempted to turn on the air conditioning after both trying numerous times and even down loading the app. The window handle did not work and was not fixed to the frame properly so we were unable to open the window. It was like being in Premier Inn with a sealed window or a sauna! We were all pretty tired the next day. I mentioned this to the reception the following morning and they said that they were available 24 hours a day. But this was not on any information to hand in the room and I wasn’t sure how they would fix air con or a window at 12am.
On returning from breakfast at 9.20 the key on app stopped working meaning we were unable to enter the room.
Disappointing that the buffet in the Olive Tree Restaurant seems to have been made smaller with no more pizza! They have made that into a carvery, this looked great but was lukewarm. The gentleman carving the beef had trouble carving and it was chewy!
Positives:
Children enjoyed the cakes in the lobby to celebrate 25 years, good experience in pool and breakfast was enjoyed by all.
Just wish we had all managed a better nights sleep!

The check-in process for the hotel could be improved as the 4pm time results in a queue stretching around the Christmas train set in reception. So half an hour later we finally check-in with a £40 upgrade to floor 6 - the Signature rooms. This was despite calling the day before to enquire about room upgrades only to be told that the ONLY rooms available [as they were extremely busy] were £144 more!

No chance of using the swimming pools as there wasn't anything available before food was booked at 8.15pm and we had to leave the next morning bit were offered 10.30am.

Food at 'Pan' was really good and opting for the 'Taster Menu' was a good choice to try lots of the dishes. Service was really good in the restaurant.

We then opted to have a drink at Merlins Bar which was busy but managed to grab a table in front of the musician, great spot. The waiter/waitress service was so poor so I opted to queue at the bar - massive mistake. The two drinks took 20 minutes to make after incorrect drink provided to start. Bar staff avoiding talking to customers who were chasing their orders and even hid behind the coffee machine at one point. No apologies offered after the long wait and sat down to enjoy the final minutes of the musicians performance. Also the bar was stacked full of empty glasses to look like a poorly managed Wetherspoons pub.

That was also spoiled by children under 6 running around like idiots on the stage next to the musician while the parents 20 feet away were only interested in getting drunk. He tried his best to sing over their screams however there was only one winner! There was no bar manager or management in place to ensure this bar after 10pm was run smoothly or to complain to!

They charge '5-star' pricing for drinks but only '1-star' service provided. Shocking and really spoiled the end to the night there.

The luxurious feel of this hotel has started to slip away. Unfortunately, you can't simply pop on your robe after a relaxing breakfast and wander down for a swim. You won't get past the front desk unless you have booked one of your two 45 minutes swim slots. Be careful, if you are ten minutes late, you are now officially a no show and your precious slot is given away. The changing room is so small you have to side step past other guests. Breakfast was nice, unfortunately mine went cold while I joined the long queue for the coffee machine which was completely undrinkable. What happened to the lovely fresh filter coffee waiting for you on your table after getting back from the buffet. What's next? A rotating toaster? The plates are looking a bit scratched and worn but if you discard a few you will find one that hasn't got dried food on it. The staff in the restaurant were lovely and friendly...to me... unfortunately they just glared at my children while they were choosing food from the buffet (The Olive Tree). The family room was nice. The sofa bed was made up ready when we arrived, with just the one pillow for 2 children to share (be careful of the big gap between the mattress and the cushions). Service charge is added to everything. I got a take away coffee from the coffee shop (no seating here just a counter) and when I asked a simple question about milk the lady serving told me to read the board. I went to pay and discovered she had added a service charge to my two coffees. I asked her nicely to take it off and she huffed at me. I booked a dinner, bed and breakfast deal for myself and two children. Silly me, I thought this meant my children would have dinner. I only discovered I had been charged for their meals when the bill was posted under my door the next day (with another service charge - for a buffet?). Apparently the package only covers the adults meals (Not sure where the Celtic Manor thought my children would be eating). I later discovered this was in the terms and conditions (yes I should have checked this), it wasn't mentioned at all in the booking stage - my fault for thinking dinner, bed and breakfast for 3 people meant the 3 people would have dinner, bed and breakfast. The dinner part covered two adult meals. I am a single parent, unfortunately my 12 year old was not allowed to have one of the adult meals and I had to pay for her separately so I was forced to lose out on an adult meal (The restaurant manager refused to move on this). The hotel explained they didn't cover the children meals in the deal because its usually couples that come to their hotel (My fault again, I didn't know when I booked that I was supposed to be part of a couple). We had a lovely time because we made it fun in the room with some pampering and snacks. I think I'll try some other hotels before going back there.

Desperate disappointed by so much.
Upon arriving, no porters to take luggage .
The room was nice, dated and tired, but nice. However, no mini bar, it was empty , not even a bottle of water.
45 minute sessions to go into the swimming pool, we chose 20:15/20:30, as we’d hoped to enjoy a quiet relaxing swim, but alas, there were as many children in the pool as euro Disney has ever seen, inflatables aswell in the pool. Screaming and shouting and splashing , but the life guards (who were children themselves) were uninterested in restoring calm to the pool.

We then redressed and left after a brief dip. Attempted to go to Merlin’s bar, there was a queue at 22:00 that was at least 16 people deep, and a drunken rabble and cackling was emanating from the room. We swiftly bailed into the small cocktail bar by the restaurant, although no draught beers available, and when we asked for a bottle of water (since there was none provided on the room) we were told that there weren’t any . A 5 star hotel unable to quench a human necessity, absolutely shocking.

Only because the server (Gundar, if I’m right in thinking, he was brilliant ) nipped into another room and fridge, did we end up with 750 ml’s at the bargain price of £5.75.

Room service was for drinks only after 22:00. I missed dinner so I was left hungry.
The breakfast was something to behold, by god, I have never seen such a chaotic display of humans attempting to fight over food. No signage, no staff instructing as to where to go. It was being run by staff children yet again, who were more interested in hiding from the guests on their phones.

When I came to checking out, the woman on reception didn’t ask how my stay was, as I would have liked to have advised her.

I am still awaiting my deposit for checking in back.

So bitterly disappointed and dissatisfied for such a lot of money for a single night.

Wont hurry back

When we arrived at the hotel, the reception staff were very miserable, and not welcoming at all, just asked for the name and payment of the holding deposit. No hint of an 'enjoy your stay'. Nearly every member of staff spoke to my wife and I like they had some sixth sense telling them that we earn less than £13 an hour, and this was meant to be a special treat for us.
The room was supposedly a deluxe king room, but all furniture, electrical appliances, and bathroom looked dated and worn. I think I would have had a more comfortable, and less painful night's sleep if I had slept on the floor. Everything needed a good clean and renovation.
Food at The Olive Tree cost £40 each, but it was a self-service buffet. The food was nothing special, and some of it had the taste and consistency of food that had been made the week before. Again, the staff were miserable and rude.
The morning after the stay we had booked the spa and a treatment, but the staff there seemed in disbelief about the possibility, and reluctantly gave us our towels. Again, the spa seemed dated, and nothing special at all, and the changing rooms seemed in need of a renovation and a good clean.
Maybe people with a lot of savings love to be able to say that they stay at this hotel regularly, and love being able to pay the expensive fees, just so that they can say they stay at the Celtic Manor Resort, but we will not be staying there again.

Where to start with this hotel..... We stayed here on Sunday 4th August and were celebrating our wedding anniversary. Before we arrived at the hotel, a lady from the spa rang us to tell us they had no water all day due to a burst pipe so could we reschedule our spa treatment and have it the following morning. Once we arrived at the hotel, we learned that due to the burst water pipe the main hotel had no running water so nobody could wash their hands or use the showers and this had been going on all day and they didn’t know when the water would be back on. There was hardly any communication about this from any of the hotel staff and was not a pleasant start to our break away.

We were told we could the use the swimming pool in the main hotel but the showers weren’t working. We went into the pool which was nice but it was rather annoying to have to get dressed and then go in a taxi to use the golf swimming facilities just to have a shower as still at 7pm there was no running water in the main hotel.

We went out for dinner and when we got back at 10pm there was still no water and no information from the staff. We had to queue up at reception to find out what was going on and we saw from another guest that they were handing out bottles of water so that we could wash our hands and brush our teeth! There was no communication at all about any of this, they could have put a sign up on the reception desk, left a message on the room phones or even told us on the app but there was nothing.

The next morning, the water was still not back and it was running from tanks. We had to check out of our room at 11am and I had been told the previous day that because we had booked a spa treatment we could have a slighter later check out. We went up the reception desk to ask about this and the member of staff that served me was so rude and couldn’t care less. Due to this, I had to go back down to the spa and explain that we couldn’t have the treatment as I wasn’t allowed to go back to my room afterwards to have a shower..... utterly ridiculous!

I understand that the burst water pipe wasn’t the hotel’s fault but the way they handled it was awful. There was zero communication and there was a complete lack of sympathy that I was expected to pay for a hotel room with no water and pay for a spa treatment that I did not get. I complained to the hotel desk who only offered a 25% discount on the room. I was told I would get a refund on my spa treatment and over 2 weeks later this has still not happened and I have rung the hotel several times and sent in a help form which says they get back to you in 2 working days (they still haven’t replied).

The rudeness of the staff and the complete lack of organisation and communication means I will never stay in this hotel. The second there is a problem, the staff and the management do not care and I am still owed for my spa treatment which I did not receive.

I was the lead of a family group involving 3 rooms - one a Signature King, one a Queen Single and one a Family Deluxe. In the Queen Room the toilet had been used but not flushed, and whilst 2 pairs of slippers were wrapped in the wardrobe, one pair noticeably smelt - and when opened was found to have faeces on the sole - unacceptable. The "package" at booking included a £30 contribution per adult towards dinner but at check out this had not been applied and needed to be challenged to rectify. The family evening meal had been booked at Raffles but was cancelled - very late - due to weather (I realise beyond the Celtic's control) - but being left then with just a buffet, the failure to apply the offered discount was even more irritating!. On the night of arrival, after a day of work and long travel, I ordered room service on the night - delivered reasonably quickly, but at the very best I would have to describe the steak as very average. I was also disappointed to no longer be able to order (and pay for) a newspaper for the room - I do realise that views on the carbon/consumption reduction agenda will vary, however I found it interesting that the reception desk had to go away and ask a colleague why I couldn't order a newspaper before being given this as the answer - I couldn't help being left with the impression that the policy of no newspapers was certainly just advantageous to the Celtic in not having to be bothered with such details. We've used the Celtic a number of times before due to the location of extended family but noticeably felt that things also like the presentation of the staff/uniforms etc was poor - overall, in our view, a significant decline in standards at the Celtic was quite apparent. The Celtic continue to charge premium rates for a premium hotel - but was no longer providing a premium service - we will not be visiting again. Incidentally, I very rarely leave reviews or complain - I think this is my 3rd ever in my 60+ years! - but have been encouraged by members of my party to do so in the hope that it would prove helpful to potential customers to consider.

We have been coming to this resort with the family for 21 years still as impressive and wonderful as ever

We have just returned from an Easter break had 2 rooms 565 & 804.

We first started bringing our son here when he was 5 and now he is 26 and he is bringing his family with him now.

Parking the car is seem less, we pulled up outside the main entrance I was appreciative to the concierge Paul, that was last time we saw the car until we left, the luggage was carefully all put up in our room with no fuss, I can’t comment on car parking charges I haven’t reviewed the bill as yet.

Check in was smooth, I had to wait 5-10 minutes as they was busy but not unexpected as a busy weekend, there was plenty of staff on duty.

I made a genuine error on my booking, Joseph the duty manager helped me resolved this swiftly, a big thank you very professional approach.

The lounge area was busy as usual you can always finds seats if you are patient, table service was efficient and friendly enough.

Our room was a king deluxe with a balcony, lovely views the room / bathroom was cleaned to a very high standard, every morning the room cleaning was excellent also.

Breakfast in the olive tree was lovely, plenty of choice and items replenished quickly when run out, our preference was to sit in the garden room for the views, just ask when you are booking your self in, we got down at 8am daily and went straight to our table any later you may have to wait a while to be seated as very busy.

We had dinner one night in the olive tree which was perfectly acceptable as a quality buffet, not the same as on a cruise or brunch in Dubai to manage expectation.

We dined in both Steak on six and Rafters which I will do a seperate views on, on there page score of 5 / 4 respectively.

Overall we left this morning all very happy and certainly will be booking to return maybe for Christmas if not before.

For anyone wanting to watch some sport there is a sports bar in the Manor House which is a 5 min walk from the resort hotel internally, great atmosphere with a pool table and lots of screens.

The females in the booking went to the Spa for some treatments, world class was there comment, I wouldn’t expect anything less from Elemis trained ladies.

Couple of minor comments below which was not worth giving a 4 score for.

Probably would have liked to have some water in the room fridge rather than have to pay for it daily to take up from the bar, for future guests take some with you and put in the fridge to save a moan.

We had a 3 year in our party who loves a swim, we was never told at the of booking our rooms all swims had to be booked which was annoying, we managed to get her in once in the four days we were there.

Apart from that can’t really think of any other constructive criticism.

Thank you Celtic Manor for your warm hospitality.
