A nice hotel overall and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. However we had a few criticisms. We were booked into one of the 'comfy' rooms. The room was very dark , and the bed was extremely low - we are no longer youngsters and we struggled to get up out of bed. The bar area was also very dark and the music was too loud to have a conversation - in the evening we had to move to the restaurant early to be able to hear each other. There was always plenty of hot water but I almost got scalded in the shower. The shower height was not adjustable so was too high for me and the shower head was fixed. I set the temperature via the bath tap then switched over to shower. It was fine until I was about to rinse conditioner off my hair and the water temperature suddenly turned scalding hot as if someone had flushed a toilet and the cold water was restricted. I could not turn off the shower as I would have to put my hand through the scalding water and there was no room either side of the spraying water to avoid it. I had to get out the shower and put my hand round the glass screen as close to the wall as I could and knock the controls quickly as hard as I could to try to stop it . the only other way would have been to wrap a towel around my arm. I found this very dangerous. We did mention this to reception when we checked out. Also the soap and conditioner dispensers were on the wall next to the shower pipe and would have been better positioned on the side wall so that you don't have to reach through the hot water spray again. The food was good but the evening a la carte menu we found very expensive, particularly as there was a distinct lack of vegetables and no salad garnish on any starters which you would normally expect would have this. Breakfast menu was good and had a lot of choice, and the food was also very good. The first morning, there was one girl on her own, setting and serving all the tables. She was excellent and did not get flustered despite having to apologise to everyone for the delay. We were not in a hurry so it did not matter to us but we felt another member of staff serving was required.

Myself and my 3 friends were excited to try the newly refurbished dining room.
Food - The food quality was excellent! We had starters and mains from the al a carte menu. Steaks were great, loved the starters.
Drink - For me I will say this, £9 for a 125ml glass of wine is outrageous. I was told at the bar they only sell small glasses, and small means 125ml. Complimentary water has been replaced with £4.50 bottled water.
Atmosphere - busy, some tables too close together so very loud, difficult to hold a conversation. We were moved to a quieter table so appreciated that.
Service - excellent, but please try to be a bit more professional in interactions with guests would be my advice until you’ve built up a rapport.
Value for Money - expensive. £82 per person for a 2 course dinner with equivalent of approx 1/2 a bottle of wine.
The food was excellent but I feel as an overall night out very overpriced for the area.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed the quality of our food, particularly the steaks and starters, as well as the attentive service from our team. We appreciate your comments regarding pricing and atmosphere. We strive to offer a premium dining experience, sourcing high-quality ingredients and carefully curating our wine selection. Our pricing reflects this commitment, as well as the level of service and ambiance we aim to provide. That said, we understand that value for money is subjective, and we will continue to review our offering to ensure it aligns with guest expectations. Regarding your feedback on glass sizes and water, we do offer 125ml servings as standard to encourage guests to explore our wine list in a measured way, but we’ll ensure our team clearly communicates all available options. We also provide a choice between still and sparkling bottled water to maintain our service standards, though we appreciate this may not suit all preferences, tap water is still available as always on request. Lastly, we take your comments on professionalism and table spacing on board. We aim to balance a lively atmosphere with comfort and will continue refining our approach to guest interactions to create a welcoming yet polished experience. We truly appreciate your visit and your constructive feedback, it helps us improve and refine what we do. We’d love to welcome you back in the future and hope to provide an experience that feels even more aligned with your expectations. Best regards, Benito @ The Priory

We stayed at the Priory for one night and it was excellent. We had a really lovely room, which was modernly decorated and had a lovely large bed, two easy chairs and a great bathroom. The tea and coffee in the room was of high quality, and there were two large bottles of complimentary water.
Breakfast was well cooked, but there was nothing you could help yourself to like fruit, cereal and juice, which would have been appreciated.
The hotel itself is lovely with a brilliant garden. The only negative we found was that the bar smelt of fish from the restaurant and was very cold in the evening, so not welcoming to have a drink.
We’d definitely come and stay at the Priory again!

We stayed in Room 22, and overall, the stay was okay. We weren't in the room long enoughwe left each morning and returned at 11pmish. The fold-out bed was missing a slat, and my daughter somehow managed to break another into two! The mattress on the fold-out was fine. The bath opposite the bed hadn’t been used in a long time—there was an unpleasant smell coming from the pipes. I filled the tub and added a generous handful of shower gel, which helped mask the odour. The room itself was spacious and located above the dining room. We did hear music one night, but it wasn’t overly intrusive.
The cleanliness of the shower left a lot to be desired. After taking a shower, I wiped the tiles with a tissue, and it turned extremely dark with dirt—not a pleasant experience. It was obvious the tiles hadn’t been properly cleaned in quite some time. Similarly, there was black mould around the base of the tap, which needed a good scrub to remove.
I also noticed that all the staff had changed since my previous visit.
Breakfast was particularly disappointing compared to my last stay. Not enough staff on. The menu no longer includes poached eggs on sourdough or similar types of bread, no porridge, no pancakes, and no yoghurt. The selection of fresh fruit was also very limited. My husband ordered granola and was served a bowl full when all he wanted was a small portion—completely over the top. The veggie cooked breakfast was nice but no veggie sausage!
There was also a noticeable lack of bread options for toast: only focaccia and white bread, which you had to slice yourself. This was unhygienic, as there were no cloth napkins provided to hold the bread, meaning you’d have to touch it with bare hands like everyone else had. I really missed the wholemeal bread they used to offer on my previous visit. I also overheard another guest commenting on how they were served only one poached egg, even though the menu listed “eggs” in the plural. I experienced the same and was left wondering what had happened to their once-fabulous breakfasts, which used to be one of the reasons I chose this hotel. I left feeling so disappointed.
The room has no ironing board or iron but we got one sent up. There is no dressing table with a mirror. Mirrors on the walls in wrong locations and made it hard to do ones makeup. Maybe better in the summer.
On a positive note, I still like the hotel's location, as it’s peaceful. Just avoid the lanes nearby—they’re nothing more than dirt tracks! We liked the hotel better before the new changes! We would still stay here, getting hold of reception staff at times was difficult!!

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback following your recent stay at The Priory. We sincerely appreciate both your positive comments and your constructive criticism, as they help us improve the experience we offer to our guests. We’re pleased to hear you found our location peaceful and enjoyed the spaciousness of Room 22. However, we are truly sorry to learn that several aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations, especially compared to your previous visits. Please accept our apologies for the issues you experienced with the fold-out bed and the condition of the bathroom. Your comments regarding the shower tiles and black mould around the tap are concerning and do not reflect our usual high standards of cleanliness. I have shared your feedback with our housekeeping team to ensure these matters are addressed immediately and more rigorous checks are implemented moving forward. We’re also sorry to hear that breakfast did not meet your expectations this time. We’ve taken note of your comments regarding the limited menu options, portion sizes, and the self-service bread setup. Your suggestions are valuable, and we will review them with our kitchen team as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance our offerings. Providing a memorable breakfast experience has always been a priority for us, and we will work to restore the high standard you previously enjoyed. Your feedback regarding the room amenities, such as the positioning of mirrors, lack of a dressing table, and availability of an ironing board, is also appreciated. We will explore ways to improve the functionality of our rooms to better meet our guests’ needs and do have continued refurbishment plans in the the works for our accommodation. I am truly sorry to hear that you found it challenging to get hold of our reception staff at times. We aim to ensure that all our guests feel supported throughout their stay, and we will be reviewing our staffing levels and availability as well as looking at new technologies to address this. We’re grateful for your honest review, as it provides us with a clear direction for improvement. Thank you for your loyalty and for noting that you would still consider staying with us again despite your concerns. We hope to welcome you back in the future and have the opportunity to provide you with the exceptional experience that you deserve and have come to expect from The Priory. Warm regards, Benito @ The Priory

Absolutely stunning room, amazing service from very friendly staff. The room it self was very cheap for the quality room and service given, didn't try the food as everything added on seemed pricy. Multiple ways to manage the temperature of the room including multiple radiators and a fan included, a stereo was included and having it playing classical music on entrance was a very nice and appreciated touch, all in all very good room and service would definitely go again.

I was travelling for work in September 2023 when there was a heatwave and my stay at the hotel was lovely. I would definitely go back but there was no aircon in the rooms and so used a fan. Wasn’t the most powerful and very noisy.
The breakfast was divine. Would go back just for that. We didn’t eat at the restaurant for dinner though, it seemed very over priced and abit too fancy. You can pick fish and veg etc but not a lot of choice if you want something basic like a burger.
Went for dinner at the Indian round the corner and the pub across the road, both great places and this hotel is in a great location for them both.
When you first enter the room they are playing classical music, even when I came back from the day the housekeepers had put classical music back on! The windows in the room wouldn’t open.
There is the cutest gift shop but is pricey. Would be good for souvenirs.
A nice stay

We visited The Priory a few years ago before the "improvements". We were very happy with everything when we stayed before. I wished that we kept the previous memory of the Priory and not stayed there again and had to witness the deterioration of a lovely place. Our room was no more that average with not one single drawer available for underwear, socks, etc. There were very few supplies of milk, tea and coffee (less than a Premier Inn) The food is very expensive and we were very limited as to choices. Several items that we chose from the counter were 'sold out', despite it being before 7.00pm!. To add insult to injury, when we received our bill upon leaving the next day, we noticed that an £11+ 'service charge' had been added to the restaurant bill for the two of us!! There was no menu on the table and nowhere was there mention of this stealth tax. This is a disgrace. A tip or 'service charge' is paid for outstanding service, not as a sneaky add on! To add insult to injury, the breakfast is poor. Too many trendy, weird choices and 45 minutes to 'cook' and serve toast to the table is just taking the Mick - especially as there were just 4 other people in there. There was no fruit or yogurt available. When we mention this at reception, we were told that several people had mentioned this. The cost for two nights Bed and 'Breakfast' and one evening meal was £472.20!! That is the last time that we will be throwing that amount of money down the toilet - as we feel we have done at this poor establishment.

Upon arrival, we were shown to our seats. The young waitress asked if we wanted the wine list and we said no, she offered us water and was about to leave. I quickly asked if they had a drinks menu, she was holding this the entire time but failed to give it to us and she instead tried reciting the drinks to us. When I said I'd like a cocktail she then gave me the menu to read, how peculiar? We then made our way to the counter and placed our food order and the man serving there was very kind and helpful, although for a 4* restaurant they didn't have many things on the menu. Once back at the table the waitress came to tell me they had no raspberry syrup to make the cocktail I wanted, again 4* restaurant not fully stocked? So I opted for something else. Our starter came which we enjoyed, the chorizo and beef pincho. Our steaks arrived with a side of carrots but they forgot our side of potatoes, they quickly brought these out. We then noticed the steak was supposed to be served with shallots and neither of us had this. I didn't enjoy my steak and have cooked better at home. Our desserts came, I had the chocolate ganache with ice cream, these were very small scoops. We also ordered coffees along with the desserts, after the waitress had left I realised she didn't give us any sugar, and then there was no waitress to be seen to ask for some and finally when we recieved the sugar the coffee wasn't hot enough to melt the sugar. We came to pay and they automatically add on a 10% service charge so it puts customers in awkward situation to have to ask them to remove this due to poor service, not something me or my husband felt like doing with other customers around us. So foolishly, we paid them a tip. That evening I started feeling unwell and had sickness, the next morning I had more sickness. After looking at other reviews, this seems common with customers leaving with bad stomachs. My advice is to not bother. We wanted to go to receive 4* service and food, but this is definitely not what we left with.

I booked and stayed 2 nights at The Priory with my daughter. We’ve stayed in many hotels around Newport area as my sister lives close to Tredegar House. We prefer this hotel over the others hotels.
My daughter really liked the Priory. No complaints at all🙂 She couldn’t remember her previous 2 stays. Another room possibly room 13.
Kim was really kind and helpful. He said to pay on checking out. Unlike The Celtic Manor who took payment on checking in and an extra £50 for breakages. (What sort of guests stay there!) Kim took us to our room and showed us to our room and helped with our luggage. He even brought us a cold water bottles. The ones in the room were warm.
The radio was playing some soft music. It was late and I could turn it off so I unplugged it.
We had been to the beach and my daughter was sandy and wanted a shower. It was nearly midnight and i needed to just shower her body without wetting her hair. Too late to be hairdrying and she was sleepy. Thankfully she had told me to pack a plastic jug as she dislikes fixed wall shower heads as some hotels have fluctuating water temperature. The showers are old Victorian(?) style unfortunately they had no hand held wand. The jug saved the day (night!) Lots of hot water she slept well.
Breakfast is still cooked to order. Other guests told me to use 2 teabags per cup as it is weak. Toast was good as they have 2 Dualit toasters to use. My daughter was happy as she likes all her butter melted into the bread and hot toast. My poached eggs were nicely cooked. It was lovely.
The room windows opened up over the hooded Monk aka the Grim Reaper as my daughter called him. Very quiet even with the windows fully opened.
We will be returning to The Priory in the future, normally with my husband. The best hotel around by far. Polite friendly staff. I’m grateful to the cleaner/housekeeper who found my clothes I left behind and reception kindly called me.

We were due to travel to North Macedonia and Kosovo, well that fell through due to covid. We booked a hotel in Bath that fell through due to local lockdown. As we couldn't leave Newport and did not want to stare at the same four walls any longer I booked a stay in The Priory. We have been to the venue many times, usually a drink in the bar they keep an excellent pint of Wye Valley beer! While enjoying a pint or two I have mused to my wife how I would like to stay there. So as mentioned above we bit the bullet and booked three nights and I'm so glad we did. Due to changes made to comply with guidelines relating to covid a lot has changed but it is all designed to keep you and the staff safe. Even before booking in I received an email laying out the procedures for the stay. Reception desk is now enclosed in glass but the reception staff were very helpful, they still use keys so be aware each time you enter and leave, if you leave the key with reception, the fob will be cleaned this is no slight to you! The rooms are clean well decorated and have most the facilities you would require, welcome tray is restricted but can be replenished if required. The food, we had heard, is excellent at this hotel and on check in you asked for the time you will require breakfast. Breakfast is now served back in the restaurant and again although probably not the full offering they may have provided in the past is quite adequate. As veggies we found sufficient to more than satisfy us. The gardens to the rear of the hotel are really lovely and very well kept. We enjoyed taking a stroll around them. We also ate dinner in the hotel on one evening and this is where I feel they let themselves down. I fully appreciate the current circumstances but only two two veggie options! We were glad it was a short trip. However, our choice was well prepared and very nicely presented. All in all it was a very pleasant break and I can imagine a good base to travel the South Wales and borders areas. After we left I discovered I had left my phone charger staff posted it on without any problem.

Hi Dogs are not allowed in the rooms but they were happy for our labrador to sleep in the car in the car park there is loads of walking and grass to use next door. I would just check first with the Priory in case it has changed its policy
There are more places to choose from in the Caerleon area.
