We stayed for two nights and loved every minute. After spending a few nights on Mt Mulanje, this was absolute luxury. The food was excellent and Amos was incredibly professional, friendly and made the best cocktails! We did the tea and coffee tour and went off a few times on mountain bikes. We definitely could have stayed longer. Annette was...

We spent a lazy day here, just the 2 of us, & it was perfect. Coffee on arrival ( mid week), an excellent & informaive 1.5 hr guided walking tour of the estate including tea & coffee plantations with Lamick, a leisurely 2 course lunch (also excellent) and a refreshing power nap in the garden before going back to Blantyre...

This house/hotel is in the middle of a tea estate. The house has definitely seen better days but more than makes up for it with the service and staff. My room was enormous with a cavernous bath in the bathroom and nice soap to use. Tea/coffee could be ordered to be brought to your room before breakfast. We [ daugher,...

We had booked for afternoon high tea and tea tasting, but the weather was very rainy. We were concerned that the road would deteriorate further during the course of the day so we arrived late morning hoping that they could accommodate us in some way. They did so much more than this - they welcomed us, drove us to the...

Charmingly old fashioned estate, which is a bit run down. Don't take the run down part as a criticism, it just adds to the charm of the place. Very peaceful place in the middle of a gorgeous tea estate, Huntingdon house is a very restful and beautiful place to stay near Blantyre/Mulanje. It is probably the best place in the...

I cannot rate Huntingdon House highly enough. The location is mind-blowingly beautiful and the service is first class. You really feel you are stepping back in time staying in this colonial house. The menu was varied and absolutely delicious, far exceeding any expectations. The staff are so polite and friendly- a special thanks to the manager Fleur for her wonderful...

The house was built in 1935 for the family who owned the plantation (the 86-year-old MD is still there!). It is a comfortable, slightly faded, colonial-style house with 5 large rooms. We had the Nursery, complete with enormous (and probably original) claw-footed bath in the bathroom. The new (joined June 2016) manager Flora is excellent; extremely welcoming and makes sure...

We been there a couple of times. Everything is always perfect. From the hospitality to the beautifully decorated state rooms, carefully manicured gardens, breathtaking tea plantation, and the food.... simply amazing. Great place for a romantic weekend!

My husband and I spent two nights here and enjoyed it tremendously. We stayed in Mother's Room and were delighted with the enormous bathtub, cozy bed, and private balcony. We were initially concerned about having enough to do, but with all the trails around the plantation, we were able to spend plenty of time walking. We also enjoyed a tea...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Arguably the most scenically beautiful region of Malawi, The Thyolo district forms the heart of Malawi's tea producing region with rolling hills of immaculately cultivated, emerald green plantations and some of the oldest estates in the country. With magnificent views of Mount Mulanje and the Lower Shire valley to the west, Satemwa enjoys a temperate climate of the Shire Highlands and relaxed ambiance of a by-gone era. Visitors to this corner of Malawi cannot but help to be caught up in the colonial magic of the area and diverse scenery which ranges from tropical evergreen forests to riverine thickets and rolling hills. Huntingdon House was built in the 1920's and the estate has been in the Cathcart Kay family for generations with members of the family still running the tea and coffee production of the estate. The grand old colonial style house has been tastefully restored as a joint venture between the Satemwa Tea Estate and the Ulendo Travel Group. ... more   less
