The George Hotel offers a mixed experience, according to guest reviews. While the value proposition has been lauded by some for its reasonable pricing, others have been caught off guard by quality concerns and extra fees. Opinions on service range from commendations of the staff's warmth and efficiency to frustrations over occasional sluggishness. The amenities, including diverse dining options and comfortable rooms, are often highlighted positively, yet calls for maintenance are noted. The hotel's ambiance and lively character are generally enjoyed, despite some guests pointing out issues with noise and a lack of atmosphere. Rooms are described as spacious and cozy, though a few guests have experienced maintenance and noise issues.

Myself and 4 friends went for sunday lunch at the George, the food was absolutely amazing! The meat was tender and dropped apart, the vegetables were delicious as was everything else. The staff were friendly and could not do enough for us. The deal of £20.00 and all you can drink for 90 minutes also went down very well. Would highly recommend.

i stayed here for 5 nights and the single room i booked was in fact a double en suite at the top of the hotel.the decor is very befitting for a country coaching inn, with the associated antiques and open fires. the staff are well drilled and always willing to assist.food was also good and a wide selection available, can personally recomend the salmon, and most definately the sticky toffe pudding. breakfast was good too, with the usual selections of pastries, cereals, juices and full english as well as omelletes, poached haddock etc.great value for money and the scenery nearby is excuisite , the river tweed adjacent to hotel and grounds. ample parking too!

A family group and guests attended the George yesterday for a Wake and we were all very impressed with the care that the staff there had provided. An excellent and extensive food spread was laid out with copious tea and coffee and the room provided at the rear of the building, overlooking the Tees (the same room my wife and I had our wedding reception in 42 years ago!), was immaculately presented and clean with plenty of tables and chairs, fresh linen and with the heating very comfortably on, adding to the ambience.
The staff attending were unobtrusive but obliging and impressed with their care, attention and professionalism. Though the George continues to be renovated following its new ownership after many years of neglect it is being done to a high standard, the bar particularly impressing. The George hadn't been our first choice to hold the Wake at, but bookings at the other venues led us here and we were so pleased that was to so. As a family we all left impressed and very much satisfied and on such a somber day the George concluded proceedings to a very satisfying standard which we are grateful for, thank you. We look forward to returning.

Me and my partner went for Sunday lunch first time visit. We sat waiting a while waiting for someone to come take our order then while we was waiting for our starter to be served a lady came walking into the restaurant with a dog where people was eating their meals. We had the garlic mushrooms to start which was were really nice.
Both me and my partner ordered a Sunday lunch my partner ordered belly pork I ordered chicken.
These came with a very large Yorkshire Pudding which was tasteless and bland and a dish of cauliflower cheese and a dish of carrots and broccoli that looked like they they had come out of the microwave. My chicken was hard around the edges and very dry which I sent back advising what the problem was. This was replaced with a new plate of dinner. The chicken was still very dry and hard around the edges. Both meals were tasteless and both of us left most of the meals. When asking for the bill we was not asked if everything had been ok as I think the waiter knew we was not happy with either the meal or the service.
Would definitely not recommend and would not go back.

First impressions are of a lovely old coaching inn located by a river in a nice small village. The exterior looks like it could do with a fresh lick of paint but it looks a lovely building. Inside the reception, bar, function rooms and restaurant areas are immaculate, very smart and very clean and tidy. Unfortunately on going up to our room we were very let down by what we saw. First impression of our double room was how small it was - it definitely should be classed as a small double on booking sites. What was even worse was the fact that the room had definitely not been cleaned. The window sill was covered in dead insects, thick dust was all over the headboard and television and the floor especially behind the bed was dirty and the bathroom was unclean.I spoke to the manager about this and asked to be moved into another room but was informed that would not be possible as the hotel was fully booked so the best thing he could do was go and clean the room himself while we had a complimentary drink in the bar. The room was quickly cleaned and was now acceptable to stay in but could definitely do with a fresh lick of paint and an upgraded bathroom but had a very comfortable bed and was very quiet. Next issue was the evenings dinner menu was very limited and had little choice for vegetarians like myself and my wife. After a decent night's sleep the breakfast was much better than we expected. Food was well cooked, large continental choice and polite, efficient staff. On our second night we hadn't eaten and went down to the bar at 8.30pm to see if we could have a bit of food and the menu was a lot better than the previous night although we had to order there and then as apparently the kitchen was closing even though the previous night we were told food was available till 9.30pm.The food was lovely and we enjoyed but we did also venture outside to go for a drink in the beer garden and it was so poorly lit down the steps that we decided not to risk life and limb. This issue definitely needs improving. In summery we both agreed that we would definitely stay here again if we were in the area . I would imagine 30 years ago this place was excellent but nowadays the rooms upstairs seem to have been neglected compared to the downstairs areas. So much potential though .

We stayed at the George for 3 nights at the end of November paying a very good special offer rate. We also paid around £12 per night to stay in a superior room which proved to be well worthwhile as the room was one of the nicest and spacious, we have stayed in. The staff were friendly, and the public areas had a nice country pub atmosphere. The beer was fine as the food (we only used the bar menu). The setting on the banks of the river Tees is very picturesque. The hotel is larger than it looks as there are rooms in an annex and the can accommodate weddings. There are several places to visit within a 20-mile radius. Guests at the front of the hotel may notice some traffic noise early morning. I will certainly be returning.

Having visited the George many times over the years and not being able to vist because of covid then seeing it was closed down image my joy when I received an email from my hotel breaks saying it was open and there was an offer yes,so called a week in advance to see if they could cater for my husband who has celiac disease, yes was the reply chef is off sick just now but should be back just put it in the notes when you book great done also as we were going to be there on my birthday dinner was on them for myself. Arrived yesterday at 4pm greeted I use that word loosely by who I've since found out was the manager not a smile or barely a hello he took payment straight away bit strange to do this on arrival but thought this could be a new policy then ohh no meal on us tonight as chef is still off sick there is a pub just down the road i explained its not always easy to find places to eat when you're celiac,so much as shrugged mumbled in a certain tone happy birthday wish he hadn't truly felt like a slap in the face . So off we went to our room clean nice fresh bed atad dated but it looks like the whole place is getting a make over but way too hot for us so we opened the window and turned the radiator off looked for half an hour on line at places to eat most are closed on a Monday night and others don't cater for celiac or didn't pick up there phone so off to the nearest supermarket to get picky food to have in the room if only we had a call to say make other arrangements earlier. Back to the room still hot would have gone downstairs but figured we wouldn't get much help it went off at 2am .
Now on to Gemma who knows customer service lovely smile and a warm welcome for breakfast knew her stuff about cross contamination and the breakfast cook and cleaner were also friendly mr manager learn from your staff

This was the third visit this year but this was our first stay in the Mews which looks like a row of cottages.
The courtyard in front was fenced off and had a table and chairs so it was quite private, through the door along a passage & into the large bedroom which was well furnished and a lovely welcome tray with tea's, coffee's bottled water and biscuits.
The bed was large and very comfortable.
Our stay was on a bed and breakfast tariff which was served in the bar with a good selection of hot menu and continental option's. Lunch & dinner were also served in the bar these were very generous portions and well priced the bar had a good selection of beers ,lagers, spirits and soft drinks /mixers which were reasonably priced ( there was a good mix of guests and friendly locals in the bar every time we stayed)
The staff were all very friendly and helpful

Visited the George for Sunday carvery with my family of 6.

We hadn’t booked so we arrived not knowing if we would be able to have the carvery how ever they did manage to get us a table.

Settings in the Geroge are very nice they had an open fire burning away opposite the bar making it nice and warm and cosy.

We was then told by a member of staff that when we want to order our food and drinks we go to the bar and order it so we did.

They then gave us a ticket to head through to the carvery we then made our way through

We was found the hot plate but no member of staff present to carve the meat etc so a few minutes went by then someone did eventually turn up

They had 3 different meats to choose from oh you can have abit of each (beef, turkey, ham)

I opted for abit of each it was then on to the veg
Now they had carrots and parsnips mixed together

roast potatoes, mash , sprouts, sweet and green beans mixed (frozen)

Anyway got sat down after a trek back to our seats which consisted of dodging people coming in and out the pub and people at the bar.

Now the food wasn’t great I must admit firstly the veg wasn’t cooked the sprouts wasn’t up to much very very tough and roasties pretty much the same.

And the Yorkshire puddings don’t no what was going on with them once you started eating them you got a strange texture in your mouth like saw dust texture.

Wasn’t great improvement is defiantly needed.

Note: the salt and pepper shakers on the tables are suppose to have salt and pepper in them not empty tried five tables and all the same issue

Family stay at the George when visiting, we always dine there when they are staying. The food is basis but enjoyable and according to family members rooms are clean and comfortable. This last stay however, when had a problem, I booked and paid for the room as a gift for my daughter in law. On the day of their arrival my bank informed me that my card had been debited for £144, ( the room was £45 and paid for at the time of booking) I rang to enquire what the charge was for, the hotel couldn’t tell me and escalated it to head office. Head office called me and informed me it was payment for the special offer they had on in the restaurant - 3 courses for £17.50. Now, I am not a mathematician but even at best 4 diners at £17.50 is £70 not £144. I hadn’t been told that my card was going to be charged or even agreed to the ‘meal deal’. They agreed to refund the charges and allow us to pay for what we wanted to eat on the evening. We also got a bottle of wine as an apology (thanks) however it’s now 2 days later and the money still hasn’t hit my bank account, I have been informed it was refunded yesterday but could take another 5-7 days to get bank into my account. It was on,y my chance I saw the notification from my bank, had I been at work I wouldn’t have seen this until much later or possibly not until checking my account at pay day. I would stress that anyone booking to dine needs to check and double check and make sure you don’t get charged before you go !.
