This was not our first visit to the hotel, we have stayed two times previously and have always been so happy with the hotel but this visit will always stand out the most to us for many reasons. Being so exhausted I hadn't actually realised I had rebooked Crabwall Manor until we drove up to it and I wish I was lying when I said I was so emotional that I shed a tear of joy and relief!

We returned December 2023 but this time round with an eleven month old baby and a 23month old toddler which makes things generally a lot trickier. We had a couple of issues with the room that were handled by the duty manager (I believe), Andrew going above and beyond for us.

The evening of our stay was incredible. You'll notice that as soon as you visit this hotel, it is absolutely spotless. As someone diagnosed with OCD I can tell you know that this is the truly cleanest, tidiest and most well thought out hotel I have stayed in my life. As a ND adult, details like this are key to a stay away from home. Prior to children we used to travel regularly together and my husband travels weekly for work and he says the exact same thing. No one's standards are higher than this hotel's when it comes to cleanliness. The spa and pool area are kept immaculate, water tested regularly and towels given out upon arrival. We took advantage of the hour session for our children which you will find are 3x daily. I do wish there was a later session to tire them out for bed and not have to rush back from a day out for but this was a common theme amongst the parents we spoke to as they mentioned it to us and we agreed a later session would be ideal but obviously not for those seeking a spa getaway, which we understand and completely respect!
The next day at breakfast there was another slight glitch due to a gas fault that no one can ever predict! Andrew and the other staff present were completely onto of the situation calmly, politely and professionally which I know from experience isn't always easy with the possibility of disgruntled guests expecting food immediately. He swiftly brought us our high chairs and the lady working breakfast brought us soya milk for our babies that are both allergic to children. We were offered a partial refund due to this but refused it on the grounds that we had been looked after so well.

Unfortunately both of our daughters and my husband became very unwell, our eldest ended up in the urgent treatment centre for two nights in a row with a chest, throat and eat infection and dangerous fever meaning swimming was off the cards totally, we always pick this hotel if we want a pool as it's my daughters favourite thing to do! During the time that my husband had taken her to hospital, he became unwell as did our youngest. We ended up spending all but a few hours of our stay confined to our room. Our beautiful, huge room luckily!

When I say that this hotel went above and beyond for myself and my family, I cannot emphasise enough that their efforts travelled further than the moon and back. Allergy and child friendly food not on the menu was arranged by Andrew and the chef for the girls at a time around their naps. We were able to have breakfast in our room where it was safer for us to do so. Absolutely anything we needed was provided and as worried as I was about the staff wanting rid of us ASAP and us being a nuisance, they could not have made me feel better
and were so thorough in calming my anxieties. I cannot remember everyone's names but absolutely everyone we had any contact with- including the night staff bringing us more towels at 4am were phenomenal. You will all hold a special place in my heart forever!

Without getting the violins out, my family has had a horrific year behind us having to cancel any trips we had previously planned for a catalogue of reasons and have no idea of when we can get away again. Even though the Christmas present I had planned for them did not go as planned, I am so thankful that it was Crabwall Manor we were staying when these events unfolded as I know in my heart, we would not have been looked after this way elsewhere. Perhaps the cry of relief on our arrival was my intuition letting me know we'd be looked after should anything go wrong.

Whether you are a solo traveller, on your honeymoon, a baby moon, an almost family, a family, friends, a hen party or ANYONE, I really suggest you stay here. You are ten minutes away from everything via car and the scenery is just beautiful inside and out. I wish we had of got married here!

I am trying to find a way of returning for my daughters 1st and 2nd birthdays at the end of January as the eldest is heartbroken she couldn't return to see "the fish" at Blue Planet- a must if you are visiting with children. We shall see, we certainly wouldn't go elsewhere.

If you are visiting this hotel or are planning to, you will not be disappointed. Please treat the team with the respect and kindness they truly deserve- you will not receive this level of care in any other hospitality environment.

Truly one of a kind.

Love, The Stardust family x

We booked a suite in this place as a celebration for my partner finishing his PhD.
The location is about 15mins out of the city and if you pick the right window you can probably see the zoo from here, it’s ridiculously close.
We spent our entire first evening in the spa, access to which was included in our room price. The facilities were great and the staff were super helpful; it was our first time going near a spa and we had no idea how to engage in any of it, but the receptionist was happy to guide us. The only draw back was that we had to chase change for the lockers, but that was barely a crease. We had access to the pool, jacuzzi & steam/sauna rooms, and we could have booked other spa treatments, but had decided not to so we could be more liberal with our plans.
Our room was unreal; we were in room 1, which is one of the Master Suites. This room featured a turret as part of the lounge (which was really spacious), underfloor heating in the bathroom, which also included a nice big bath (my partner is 6ft3, so the size of the bath is always something we like to mention) and an enormous comfy bed.
I have a little ritual in hotels, where I check where the fire exits are and it was literally next to your bed, with one way access on the door, so that nobody could randomly wander in, but you could get out.
Literally the one downer I can mention on the room was that it is right above the bar and you could hear the music through the floor, however it does close and go silent at 11pm, so it’s not like you’re kept up by a nearby club all night.
We visited both the bar and restaurant for food over our stay:
The restaurant was great - not a big menu (I find that to be a good thing in restaurants - you know it’s all made fresh) and the service was spot on.
The bar meals were just as good and actually a similar menu, now that I think of it.

Overall, this place is 10/10, we’ll definitely be back next time we want an adventure around Chester.

On arrival we were amazed at the sheer beauty of the building and it’s decor. We were greeted by a friendly guy on reception who took us up to our room, we stayed in room 8 which is upstairs. There are no lifts so I relied on my boyfriend to do the carrying!

The room itself was really spacious and had almost everything you’d need, the only issue I had was lack of lighting. By the dresser it’s really dark even with all the lights on you can barely see, there’s no plug sockets near the bathroom so I couldn’t use the lighting and the mirror in there to do my hair.. this resulted in buying an illuminated mirror for use on the next 2 nights we stayed as the first night I got ready using my flash light!

The food was lovely in the restaurant and breakfast you couldn’t fault.

On the last day (New Years day) we came down to breakfast just before 9am and the staff were still vacuuming. A young guy told us breakfast wasn’t on until 10am, then a young girl said no it’s 9am and there was a bit of disagreement between the two members of staff. This to me was a bit unprofessional as we were sat there listening to this. Turns out breakfast was at 9am so we were quickly seated not long after this and enjoyed a lovely breakfast!

We enjoyed our massage in the spa, the girls are lovely! The facilities are clean and have everything you’d want.

We enjoyed our 3 nights here and would definitely recommend Crabwall to anyone in the area ... oh and visit Chester Zoo!

Our first stay out of the lockdown and we were apprehensive of what it was going to be like. This hotel has everything in place loads of hand sanitisers and a one way system, screens where appropriate, but in a strange way things felt strangely ‘normal’
We were in room 10 which I would highly recommend especially for a family 2 separate rooms and a great bathroom looks like it was newly refurbished.
The grounds are amazing took me back, plenty of out door seating if you fancy a drink or meal outside.
Breakfast was a great continental selection including bacon and sausage sandwiches it’s a pre order by 10pm and a bag with all your goodies in is left by your room door.
Will we be returning
OF COURSE 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Dear Timm724, Many thanks for sharing your feedback following what appears to have been a very positive experience here at Crabwall Manor. Though times are slightly different it is really pleasing to hear that you and your family felt comfortable and that service was as normal as it can be in such uncertain times. May I just add that it was an absolute pleasure to meet you and your family while you were here, and it goes without saying if you are ever in the area again we very much hope to welcome you and your family back Crabwall Manor. With thanks and kind regards, David

Just returned from a 2 night stay. Stayed in room 35. It's very "tired" , paint flaking on the ceiling, grouting missing between the tiles in the bathroom. The shower head needed a deep clean as covered in lime scale along with black mold in and around the shower tiles. The room itself was unbearably hot. There was a small fan (extremely dirty) which kept vibrating off the dressing table in the night. You can open the window but there's a child lock on it so cannot open it wide. We also wondered if it was safe to do so as the window frame was rotting. We had an issue with the TV which was sorted straight away when we mentioned it to reception. The staff were really pleasant but need to stop pulling their masks on and off or touching them all the time when handling food and drink. Breakfast was a choice of Full English (have had better) or continental (yogurt, cereal, croissant and toast). While we didn't have an unpleasant stay, it was nothing to rave about either.

Dear AmandaG370, Many thanks for taking the time to post your feedback following your most recent experience at Crabwall Manor. Sounds like a frustrating time you had and I am sorry that there are elements here that should have been much better. Sorry on this occasion we missed expectation but I assure you the issues raised on your note have all now been actioned though sadly there is little we could do about the hot period of weather we experienced at the time of your stay, though we have replaced the fan as noted above. Thank you, pleased to hear that the staff did all they could to ensure a pleasant stay, and ofcourse we will reissue the guidance around the mask wearing procedure to ensure there are no grey areas. If I can offer any additional assistance however please don't hesitate to contact me directly, With thanks, David

I don’t really know where to begin! From the moment we pulled into the car park and saw the beautiful grounds and building, I knew that I was going to love staying here. On checking in, the very professional and friendly chap informed us that we had been upgraded due to it being my birthday and very kindly informed us of where the restaurant, bars and spa were located. When I walked into our room/suite I was truly blown away. Not only was it beautiful, but immaculate and even though it was large, it felt cosy.

My husband and I then visited the restaurant for our afternoon tea, which again was absolutely superb. The waitresses were so professional and even asked us to select which tea we would like from a wide range of loose teas available. The sandwiches were delectable, as were the desserts. We sampled the blackcurrant cheesecake which was light, but creamy and was definitely my favourite.

The spa was clean, the changing facilities were decent with showers and plenty of lockers. I wish I had booked in for a massage as I saw a lot of very relaxed looking people in the spa area, but I shall use this as an excuse to visit again.

Our evening meal was plentiful, of a very high standard and very fresh. I tried the chef’s special of rump steak followed by his soufflé and thoroughly enjoyed both. My dessert even came with a happy birthday message on the plate which I thought was a lovely touch.

Breakfast was also great, a good choice of food for all dietary requirements was on offer and the buffet selection was restocked quickly. All the food was hot and again tasted very fresh.

Drinks in the bars are very reasonable, and all of the staff are friendly, welcoming and extremely professional. I think the management of this hotel should be extremely proud of how well the staff look after their guests. I came away from Crabwall instantly wanting to rebook, feeling pampered and relaxed. I really do hope that this review will be shared with all the staff so that it is noted of what a fabulous job they all did in making my birthday so special. I wish I had asked for people’s names as I would like to have given them a special mention. Thank you all so much for a truly wonderful stay!!! We shall be back very soon!

On overnight stay with my partner. Arrived couple of hours prior to check in time of 3pm so we thought we'd have a drink in the lounge. The lounge itself is dated and could be made much better. There had been an event the night before so main bar wasn't open and we had to go searching for staff to order drinks and food. However the main frustration of our stay was the Al A Carte menu wasn't available for our evening meal due to 'unforeseen circumstances' which we were very much looking forward to. I believe the unforeseen circumstance was due to the chef being off sick but surely this can't be unusual situation for an accomplished hotel and there is a no.2 chef!? Therefore only the bar menu was available for our evening meal which was extremely disappointing. This meant the only starter available to us was soup but I think the waitress could see we didn't want soup and offered us pate which was appreciated. However when it came the accompanying toast was cold. My partner ordered the ceasar salad, chicken was dry and no bacon which was included on tye menu description. I had fish and chips, fish really good size but mushy peas looked as though they'd been sitting in oven for hours and had gone crusty. THE FOOD IS NOT CHEAP! Steak burger was £17 and if you want bacon an extra £2 and cheese another extra £2, that's £21 for a burger! Pizzas although nice are approximately £14 for a medium size pizza. We're fortunate that we have eaten at some high end restaurants and have never paid £21 for a burger. On average we pay approx £13-£15 for a homemade burger and chips including bacon and cheese so I don't know why this restaurant can justify this price. My fish and chips was £17 which again is extremely expensive for what it was. All food on menu we thought was extremely expensive, if it was fine dining I could understand more but it certainly isn't fine dining. Carpets in some areas of the hotel looks extremely dirty and there are scuffs on bannisters and window frames are in dreadful condition. The main positive of our stay was the room which was a large room and nicely decorated and fully stocked with water, tea, coffee, biscuits etc. Breakfast was also very nice but staff seemed rushed off their feet and waitress told us that a breakfast team member had phoned in sick. Therefore both our breakfast and evening meal was affected by staff sickness. Before leaving we used the health suite which is lovely. Great size pool with jacuzzi, steam and sauna.

Dear Davebeza, Thanks for the review Dave and I am extremely sorry for the disruption caused especially regarding the restaurant service. There is no question that as a whole the hospitality industry is experiencing unprecedented demand for a number of reasons, which is sadly combined with an industry wide recruitment challenge. For us this challenge has primarily hit our food and beverage teams and especially our kitchen brigade. We are in the process of rebuilding an entire kitchen team from scratch and while we do that we are relying on agency and a small number of our core retained staff. Sadly if those agencies do not appear for their agreed shifts it leaves us in a very tricky position and recently we have had to make dramatic decisions in order just to maintain a level of food and restaurant service. We are hoping that this situation will be resolved very soon and we have some fantastic resources coming into our kitchen full time within the next couple of weeks. In the interim it is proving a challenge there is no question. Not a position we expected nor planned for but we are doing the best we can. The same applies though not as drastically to our front of house food and beverage team. I am sorry this had such a detrimental impact on your stay but I appreciate the feedback. I hope we get the opportunity to welcome you back again soon where I assure you the food and beverage department will be in a much improved position. With thanks, David

We received a Sunday stopover voucher as a wedding present which included a nights stay with a three course meal and a bottle of wine. We decided to pay to upgrade to a Friday night and stayed on Friday 21st Jan.
The first thing we noticed was it seemed to be very under staffed, this may have been due to covid but there was no explanation or apology for wait times and we really felt for the poor staff who seemed to be run ragged.
We had a superior room which was a nice size and on the whole comfortable but it was a bit tired. The bathroom felt very bare and not enough attention to detail with cracks in the ceiling on show after a very poor touch up job. Wires were hanging down from the tv which as well as being unattractive was probably against h&s too!
The bed was two singles pushed together, as a married couple away for a romantic night, we’ve never slept further apart! Trying to lay together was very uncomfortable.
We had a drink in the bar sat by the fire which was lovely. Again the bar was understaffed for the amount of guests and the one poor lady working was rushed off her feet. Despite this she provided a great service always with a smile.
We went through to the dining hall for our meal and immediately asked if we could go back to the bar and eat. It felt very much like a canteen with no atmosphere and felt very cold. When we got back to the bar our table by the fire was taken so we moved to the other bar where they hadn’t lit the fire and it was freezing cold so sat shivering the whole time.
We ordered our meal and was told we could only have white wine! We challenged this and had a nice bottle of Rioja with nice starters and mains. Unfortunately as the bar person was so busy we really struggled to get her attention to order our pudding and after waiting a good 20 minutes we gave up and returned to our room so didn’t get the full worth of the voucher.
The next morning we had breakfast in our room. This was 20 minutes late and luke warm when it arrived. It wasn’t covered and the kitchen was quite a distance from our room! The toast was more like stale bread, it couldn’t have been in a toaster for more than 10 seconds tops and was inedible. The tea for two came with one saucer to share and no teaspoons. Whilst not a big deal really it’s all the lack of attention to detail added to the other issues that really made this stay mediocre.
Before leaving we thought we’d use the spa facilities and have a swim. Being a couple away, we purposely arrived 30 minutes after the children’s float session finished only to find the pool was still full of children with their floats! So we gave that a miss and went home!
We definitely wouldn’t return to crabwall manor and wouldn’t recommend either.

We enjoyed our two night stay. We were in a superior room, which was large and clean. The bathroom was also large with both a shower and a bath. The shower was fine but the bath water just dribbled out.

The windows of the room were broken and couldn't be opened or closed properly. They should repair them. There was tea/coffee, water and biscuits. They only supplied two tea bags, which is a bit mean.

The floors on the passageways to the room are terribly stained. Most of the doors were dirty. Does the hotel manager not notice these things?

The people at reception were friendly and helpful. They should have better signs to indicate the way to Jacob's Restaurant, the Terrace Bar and the Spa so that new guests can find their way around better.

The menu in the bar and restaurant was poor. Lots of burgers and pizza. We ate but it was expensive for what you get. I had a Boddington's draught beer in the bar and it tasted very strange - like a cheap lager, not a creamy bitter as it normally is.
The background music was too loud.

The breakfast was extra but it was good. You could help yourself to cooked breakfast. They should offer more fruit and cut it properly without leaving the skin on. The background music which sounded like 'hits of the 1960s' was unnecessary. The tables in the dining room are old and worn and the room has a bit of a canteen feeling.

The Spa and pool are good. They charge £5 to use a dressing gown, which is a bit much. The pool water is quite warm.

The parking is very good. The WiFi was good but makes you log in with password each time you return to the hotel.

The location is good but too far to walk into Chester.

Overall, we liked it and would return but we wouldn't stay for the evening meal again

Dear zenMaster62, Thank you for taking the time to post your review following your most recent experience. I think this is a very honest and genuine review so thank you. We have had challenges rebuilding a kitchen team since we re-opened, and I agree that the menu at times has appeared limited. We are slowly but very surely getting back to a level which is appropriate for the brasserie in terms of level of service and menu selection and have at times concentrated on just providing a level of service which I accept has appeared limited. BE assured we are working daily on expanding and rebuilding the selection with a brand new kitchen team now virtually in place. The bar menu does by nature carry more burgers and arguably less formal food selection, but I appreciate the restaurant menu should at all times feel very different. Look forward to welcoming you back again soon where I hope you would have an improved experience - please do let me know when you are returning so we can ensure we get the opportunity to address some of these frustrations directly. Thank you David The carpets throughout are a constant challenge for us based on the core colour. We get them professionally cleaned once a month and have only just had them done last week so I hope you would see a difference since you were here, though there are still areas that require additional cleaning. Not so much dirt just signs of some wear in certain spots.

We booked here for one night in December 2021. The hotel itself is well placed for Chester, only a couple of miles away from the centre and the zoo. We booked a standard double room which included dinner and breakfast and came with a massive bed (two beds made together) The room itself was clean, large and comfortable, nicely decorated with good facilities and large en-suite bathroom. If I were just reviewing based on the room I’d have given 4.5 stars. One draw back on the room, it really needed a light above the dressing table mirror as the wall lamps gave out very little light. The food left much to be desired. We wondered why the restaurant was practically deserted at 7pm. The brasserie were serving a ‘festive’ menu. Starters were great (duck pate and soup for us) although the pate only came with a small amount of bread. Main course (turkey paupiette) was horrible and might have been microwaved it was very tough. There was no salt and pepper on the tables, nor table cloths (which might have given the room a bit more of an ambience, but unfortunately there was none.) Salt and pepper was delivered in sachets. I presume this was some sort of labour-saving/ money saving scheme due to Convid. It felt a bit like the restaurant that time forgot, even though the overall decoration was modern. Breakfast was equally as disappointing. Cold ‘hot’ plates, cold scrambled egg, what smelt like microwaved bacon (though we did not eat this to try) there was no provision for veggie sausages which were mentioned on the room service breakfast menu. The breakfast includes: sausage, bacon, fried egg, scrambled egg, tomato, mushrooms, hash browns, baked beans, pastries, continental selection, juice, cereal etc. But unfortunately all was pretty dire to be honest. Most of the staff were excellent though, friendly and welcoming. I think the only problem here is the trying to economise on things which needed a bit more spent on them, however these are hard times for the hospitality industry so I can understand the cut backs. The spa was excellent, nice pool with jacuzzi, Steam room and sauna and we both had treatments.

hi there. you will need to book the pool - this is what we did. Try leisure at crabwallhotel co uk to book pool slots. We booked massages via the online system - go to crabwall's web page and you can find the booking system there.

Yes they are in the scheme and we couldn't use them when we stayed in July! May have changed now though
