We stayed here for one night, after an appointment in Wrexham. The hotel was the only one we could find in the area for the night with a room for three and was excellent value. Our first choice, The Chester Grosvenor was full. The communication with the hotel in the run up was excellent but not executed quite so well! When we arrived to check in, the young man on reception was on the telephone for quite some time to a customer. We waited patiently for him to discuss lots of options and the call finally ended. He thanked us for waiting but he really should have interrupted his call and explained he would be with us ASAP. Our room was up a couple of flights of stairs and was large and adequate with a good sized bathroom. The sheets and pillowcases were spotless but there were dust bunnies in the corner of the bathroom and hair in the bath. I should have mentioned we were asked if we wanted to book breakfast at £12.95 but as 3 vegans I said it was expensive for toast and cereal. We were offered it for £8.00 but we declined (later saw it offered on Booking.com for £7.50). We went to the local Costa the next morning. That evening, my daughter needed an iron, the room phone didn’t work so we rang reception from a mobile and someone kindly delivered an iron. Unfortunately, it had a black sticky patch and it left a mark on her skirt so she wore it creased. The ironing board was dire - no padding and kept collapsing - but it gave us a laugh. We were booked in for spa treatments the next morning and headed there. There was no one on reception so we waited some time, along with others. The lady who dealt with us was also doing some of the treatments (amongst lots of other things and was really stretched). She couldn’t find the bookings as whoever I had dealt with had put them in their diary for Sunday, not Saturday. She accommodated us but it kind of spoiled the experience. Our treatments were lovely but the rushing and uncertainty didn’t lead to the relaxing experience we’d hoped for. All told, all the staff we met were pleasant and polite - there’s just not enough of them and they’re multitasking and stretched too thin. The hotel would benefit from some upgrading and investment because it’s in a lovely spot. I would consider returning then. I wish you great success for the future.

Dear Quest17825482510 Thank you for your helpful and constructive comments following your recent stay. I am sorry to read that you met with some delays at reception and in the Spa and appreciate your patience in this matter. With the easing of restrictions and as we bring our furloughed staff back we hope to ensure this does not reoccur. I have asked the GM to check the iron and board and replace them if needed. Meanwhile , please stay safe and well and with thank you for your good wishes as the hospitality industry returns to normal. Kind regards Denise Ummat Director

Booked last minute for a night away .
Pet friendly spa hotel ... (can’t comment on spa as we didn’t use it)
I’m guessing it’s in need of updating along side the rest of the hotel .
100% not a 4* as said on google . I’m need is revamp !
The first room we was given was on the ground floor which is understandable having the dog ... however the room was cold felt damp .. very unwelcoming .. no bedside lamps very uncosy !! Tv didn’t work either .
We had a meal booked for a restaurant that evening and really didn’t want to leave my dog In that room . The guy on the reception / bar man / manager / jack of all trades bless him a one man band running the place was happy to show me to another room on the first floor which instantly felt warm and cosy on entering it was perfect to cosy up the dog whilst we dined and then enjoy a film when we got back. Yes it’s in need of updating think we got lucky with the second room ! It was clean warm and cosy. (Room 25) until the heating went off in the night ha .
Breakfast was run by another one man band .. serving the food whilst doing reception and other duties !
Definitely need more staff !! ... Yes the place is run down and in need of a revamp and I suppose the covid situation isn’t helping them but all in all with the room swap we enjoyed our stay.
Breakfast was standard full English . All fab bar cheap sausages .
Ideal little hotel for trip on night out to Chester only £6 in a cab to the centre so for the price we paid was worth it in the end.

We booked the night before through Spa Finders for a cream tea, 25 minute massage and use of the facilities.
Whilst the building needs some work they are doing the best with what they have and it was spotless in all the areas we used.
We were greeted by Amit on reception with a smile, he took us through to the heath club explained what we could use and when our treatments were. It was also Amit that served us our delicious cream tea and that was constantly checking the spa and pool area. He didn't stop all day, was attentive and friendly.
My treatment was a back, neck and shoulder massage by Elena. Again, Elena was friendly and attentive and the treatment its self was fantastic! She made me feel comfortable and I swear she is magic because she managed to relax my hunched shoulders.
If you can look past the building being a bit past its best then the staff and treatment will definitely make up for it.

Let's get the bad bits out of the way first....
The hotel is in serious, serious need of refurbishment. Worn furnishings, tatty sofas with threadbare covers, holes in the bedroom carpet, a facade that's akin to a 60s office block. The list is endless to be honest. If the money isn't there for upgrading, it costs nothing to dust the cobwebs, litter pick the drive and clean the leisure centre properly. And the pool receptionist suggesting we should go and fetch our room towels (because she'd none left) beggered belief!! Breakfast was mediocre at best. Queues were long. Cheap bread, fatty bacon, budget sausages and they quickly ran out of croissants. No excuse, the hotel should provide the same level of service to all clientele. Basically breakfast was provided on an absolute shoestring which was a sad contrast to the lovely dinner.
On a positive note, the hotel was dog friendly, the restaurant manager was outstanding, the 3 course evening meal was great (try the shortbread if you can!), the bed was comfy and the pool/ jacuzzi later in the evening was relaxing - altho' be warned if looking for tranquility, packed with families until at least 6pm.
The welcome brochure in the room had an intro from the manager who was "looking forward to meeting the guests". But he was no where to be seen. Not a surprise really!! Over all, a below average stay. Would we book again? Unfortunately not.

Dear T4498VQnikkiw Thank you for your comments and feedback. The Hotel has seen some recent refurbishment and redecoration and we hope to complete those rooms not yet addressed in the next phase. There can be no excuse for any laxity in our housekeeping standards and practices and I will look at the issues you have mentioned with the Housekeeping team. I am sorry that this and breakfast were disappointing and will run through both with the GM. Kind regards Denise Ummat Director

We visited the hotel today for a murder mystery night with 3 course meal included through Murder 57 with buy a gift.com
I had read on here some bad reviews and I called and spoke to Vincent front of house who was really helpful and reassuring
We did choose to upgrade to room 5 the four poster room which was really nice
Yes the hotel is old and the look therefore isn’t modern but I really don’t think it’s meant to be!
I can see what people mean about when you pull up at the front it’s a bit 70s isn’t it but I would say these are extensions to the original building to make more rooms. However the hotel is nice to look at from the back and also nice views out to the garden from the restaurant
As soon as you walk through the front doors the hotel felt welcoming
I found the furnishings and carpets in the common areas of the hotel to be perfectly acceptable and in keeping with the style of the hotel
No problem with cleanliness in the room or in the common areas of the hotel
3 course meal at the event was really good arrancini balls/soup both had the chicken and cheesecake
Bottle of wine £17 and not even cheapest on there can’t complain about that price can you
Buffet breakfast fab, seated straight away, bacon and sausage were really good quality you could tell and everything was cooked nicely
Found all staff to be very friendly and helpful reception, bar, the lovely guys serving our food in the York suite for the event and the ladies who were working this morning at breakfast were so nice and helpful
Thank you everyone for making us feel welcome and thank you Vincent for all your help

We have visited this hotel for the past 5 years and over the years it has been good but this year it was extremely disappointing. The 3 rooms we booked weren't available when we arrived on Friday so we were downgraded and offered 2 bottles of wine to compensate. the manager didn't seem particularly bothered by our situation. The rooms were poor in standard with broken sinks, showers and just in a bad state of repair. The beer was awful and we ordered our meals which arrived starter and main course all at once so one of our party had to place her main course on the floor as there wasn't enough room on the table. Two of us ordered the same thing and the meals were totally different amounts of food. Breakfast on the Saturday morning was horrendous. Everything was running out and people were waiting for items while other items were going cold. There was one member of staff in particular tho called john who was very good. he got me some mushrooms after being told there wasn't any and was very good with the customers. On the Saturday evening we visited the spa and the jacuzzi was dirty and the sauna wasn't working and the steam room smelt foisty. The showers were freezing cold and there was no bags or spinner for the costumes. They ran out of the beer we were drinking in the bar (we only asked for 3) but they only had 2. The evening meal was just terrible. The starter arrived quite quickly and the soup was lovely but the fish cakes were overcooked and dry. we then waited around 1 hour and 15 mins for our main course which was not up to standard or cooked the way some of us asked for. the lamb shank was lovely tho but didn't come with what it stated on the menu. The manager didn't come near to speak to us even tho he was walking around serving etc. and it was left to the waitress Holly who was very good with us and very apologetic about the whole thing. There were other guests in the same position, sending food back and complaining about the time scales. We actually sat down to our meal at 7.50pm and it was well after 10 pm by the time we finished!! Holly was great and cancelled our bill for the evening which was very good of her. We are sad that we love Chester and have had some lovely weekends at this hotel but it has deteriorated so much especially over the last year that we will not be visiting again. Such a shame as it's in the perfect location for Chester and surrounding areas.

We have stayed at this hotel for the past 5 years for my birthday weekend. Over the years we have always been well looked after and had enjoyable weekends. This weekend,6 of us, 3 couples, arrived Friday night to be told that the executive rooms were not available even though we had an email confirming we had booked them. The receptionist's manner was not acceptable to say she was the first person to greet guests.we were offered two bottles of wine as compensation from the duty manager.
The rooms we had were very "tired". No bedside light, bottom of the bath was rusty toilet roll holder hanging off the wall, unable to alter the air conditioning as the control switch was missing.
We ordered food from the bar on Friday night, starters and main, these were all brought out together, when question the reply was as we had ordered them on one order That's the way they were served.
Saturday morning it was clear they couldn't cope at breakfast. We constantly waited for food to be brought out while the food we had went cold. John, the waiter was very helpful and tried to make the situation better.
Saturday evening we booked a table in the restaurant. Starters were satisfactory although the fishcakes were burnt and dry. We waited over an hour for our main courses. The lamb was beautiful but did not come with what was stated. The steaks were very disappointing. Dispute asking the waitress several times to check on the food not once did Clive the duty manager offer any apology or explanation to why it was taking so long. Several other tables complained at the length of the wait. Holly the waitress did her best but I feel it was not her place to take the brunt of everyone's grievances.
Sunday breakfast was a repeat performance of Saturday.
The spa facilities were inadequate. The sauna was out of order, the jacuzzi was dirty and the ladies changing rooms were cold.
Sunday morning Holly took it upon herself to clear the bill for our evening meal.
The whole weekend was very disappointing compared to previous visits.
My husband contacted the hotel this morning, he got no apology and they have offered us "discount" on our next visit.
Unfortunately this year was our last visit we won't be returning.

Drove down to Chester from just outside Glasgow with great expections. Where do I start..... first of all on reaching our destination we drove passed the hotel 3 times as we didn't believe the sat nav was actually telling us this grossly run down looking building which was poorly sign posted was actually where we were booked into! Anyway,we entered the hotel and a member of staff cane out an office at reception and having just spoken to a customer on the phone saying "I didn't know what to them there" not very professional I thought. We were then told we were staying in room 3, headed to room 3 passing a store room which was full of junk and looked absolutely filthy. Our room was not at all welcoming as we walked in our hearts sunk. The headboard was disgusting with brown stains from greasy heads over the years, the carpet had not been hoovered round the edges and there was an earring at edge of the bed. The lamps were covered in dust, the window coverings were hanging off the wall and were dirty, the skirting boards were dust coated Next morning at breakfast I happened to look up and above our table were cobwebs that looked like they had been there a while. The young staff members were clearly not well trained and did not keep the fresh juice, tea, coffee etc topped up. The following morning an older lady was on the breakfast shift and made a huge difference, she obviously was better trained in hospitality. The room had a folder with a very long description of the managers career, Fintan Gavin, you would think he would know how to run a hotel with high standards. On checkout I was asked if everything was ok, this was my opportunity to let the receptionist know that it very much wasn't. She said she would pass it on to her manager but he had already heard everything I had to say as he was sitting with his back to her and very unprofessionaly didn't turn round until I left the desk and then asked what room. You would think he would want to speak to the customer with the complaint but instead chose to keep his head down and ignore me. Bed and breakfast cost us almost £150 per night,we could have stayed somewhere way nicer for this price. The rates do not reflect the standard of accommodation provided,it needs money spent on it, furniture, beds, pillows crockery, everything is old and needs renewed. Chester is a beautiful city,I will return but not to the Brooke Millington Banastre.

We bought a Groupon deal for dinner, bed and breakfast with spa access. The only positive was the staff!

The hotel itself is poorly advertised as the external photo online is of the back. The frontage is ugly, dated and looks more like offices than it does a hotel! Inside is in desperate need of investment - paint bubbling and peeling, chunks of paint missing along the corridors. The room we had was tired looking and nothing like the boutique style rooms shown online. There was a bedside lamp but no socket to plug it in!? The taps in the bathroom worked intermittently and the hot was scolding hot when it did decide to work!!

Dinner was a 3 course menu. I opted for the pate. It tasted and looked like a cheap shop bought slab of Brussels pate and was served with stale crisp breads that were shoved on top. My husband had ham hock which he said was ok at best. My main was meant to be chicken with mushroom and bacon sauce. There was no bacon and it tasted very processed. The veg that came with both our meals was clearly out of the freezer and was rubbery and tasteless. The salmon that my husband had was overcooked and greasy. The pudding was the nicest part of the meal!
(note to the 'chef' - putting a sprig of watercress or pea shoots on top of everything doesn't make it gourmet!)

Moving on to the 'spa' the pool and hot tub both had sandy deposits on the bottom! In the steam room I almost burnt my leg as the steam was coming up between the slats in the bench and it was tiny! The sauna was out of order and the changing rooms were absolutely freezing! Not the most relaxing experience!

In the morning, breakfast was better than we anticipated after the shambles of dinner. Fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, pastries, toast and cooked breakfast buffet. We stuck to fruit and toast as the cooked items didn't look very appetising. The coffee was too strong but this is personal taste (though I do normally like strong coffee).

All in all, we had a very disappointing stay and feel we wasted our money on this 'deal'! We wouldn't recommend, nor will we be back again.

Having just returned from a two night stay we were very disappointed. We have stayed here in the past and found it very pleasant so were expecting a very comfortable stay. Previously we found the lounge area very tired with the chairs upholstery very worn.
When we entered we were pleased to see new carpet and many of the settees and easy chairs replaced so at first glance it looked much improved. The people on reception were very friendly and helpful.
We had requested a ground floor room and this was a good choice as our room faced the very attractive gardens. Other rooms faced the front of the hotel and so had a degree of road noise. Our room was cold on entering but that was because the thermostatic valve was set at zero. I adjusted it and soon the room was nice and warm.
After unpacking we retired to the lounge but here it was very cold. We were lucky as we were able soon to move to seats alongside a gas log fire which improved the temperature a little but could not make much impression on a very large lounge.
On the first night we had a meal in the dining room which was a mistake. The choice was good and the food was well cooked but it was all spoilt by the temperature. It was so cold that it was difficult to concentrate on the food.
We found the staff very helpful but there was not enough of them. It was difficult to track someone to serve at the bar.It seemed that one person was dashing from the bar to reception and back repeatedly.
In the bedroom the room had received a full renovation but totally lacked any charm. There was no Do not Disturb notice provided. The walls cried out for some pictures. There was no glasses in the bathroom. The shower over the bath was excellent.
The leisure facilities could have been very good but the steam room and the Sauna were out of action. The gym was well equipped ans the swimming pool and hot tub was lovely and warm.
All areas were very clean and we had nice clean towels each day.
To sum up someone has spent a lot of money renovating this hotel but have failed on the small touches and something must be done to improve the heating in the public areas. and the restaurant. I would not stay there again unless it was in the middle of a hot summer.
