I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with my recent experience at the hotel, Quinta da Palmeira Country House. On 17/08/2023, I made a reservation for two adults and one infant for a two-nights stay. The reservation was made through Booking.com and was confirmed. When I arrived at the hotel, I was informed by the owner that I could not be accommodated because the only room available was in the main house and that my daughter, who is one month old, would be too noisy and disturb the other guests. I was very surprised by this response, as at the hotel page on Booking.com states that it is "family-friendly" and there is no mention of any age restrictions. Additionally, the hotels at the surrounding area were fully booked, so no other options for us with a baby. I was very polite to the owner, but he was very rude and unhelpful. He told me that there was nothing he could do and that I should find another place to stay at 8pm. I am very disappointed with the owner's attitude and the way I was treated. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone and I would never stay there again. I expect with this to prevent other people from having the same unpleasant experience I had.

Response from Jack Brouns, Owner at Quinta da Palmeira - Country House Retreat & Spa
Responded 25 Aug 2023
Dear guest, We appreciate your preference and interest for Quinta da Palmeira - Country House Retreat & Spa. NOTE: the person who made this review never visited us but only made this bad review at the request of a friend or family member. We would like to explain how things really went. Below you´ll a summary of all the facts: •You called us and asked if we had a room available for a couple and a baby of 1 month. We informed you that we only had 1 room available, at the main building and this room wasn´t suitable for a couple and a baby. We don´t want to disturb any other guest staying at the main building if for example a baby is crying during the night. We have 2 rooms outside the main building to accommodate a family with a baby but both weren´t available. •Several minutes later we received a reservation from Booking.com for a couple with a baby. We called the phone number mentioned in this reservation and we asked the person who answered the phone: “didn't we talk by phone just a few minutes ago?” but you answered: “no, no, I didn´t called you, it had to be someone else!” But it was really you, so we informed you for the second time that we didn´t have any room available for a couple and a baby and it was best to cancel the booking to avoid any problems. •Surprisingly 3 hours later you arrived at our location. The reception employee informed you for the 3th time that we hadn´t any room available. Even then you said again that you didn´t knew this. The reception employee called me and I informed you by phone for the 4th time that we couldn´t accommodate your family and you. •To be of help we arranged within 30 minutes a room for you in another nearby hotel in the region. We sent all the info to Booking.com, they informed you, and they also cancelled the reservation you had with us, of course at no costs. •The next day, appeared 18 bad reviews on every social platform available, mainly on Google and Tripadvisor, all about the same topic. Childish and unfair, but you already said to us during our last phone call that you would ask ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO WRITE BAD REVIEWS ABOUT US. We have a very well decorated country house and only some rooms are equipped to receive children or babies. As informed several times by us, we didn´t had a room available for a family with a baby, but despite this information, you still decided to come. We have fulfilled our obligations like several times informing you and giving you clear explanations why we couldn´t accommodate a family and a baby in the main building during high season. We also arranged a re-location hotel for your family and you. Wondering what was your own responsibility in this matter? Our very best regards, Quinta da Palmeira.

The hotel is very well kept, amazing views from the pool which has a convenient but not cheap honesty bar. Not sure if the pool was heated or it was because of the warm weather but it was a plus for the kids! The room was very comfortable, large and perfectly cleaned. Only downside was no A/C. Jack the owner and the lady at breakfast were very polite and professional in every interaction and kind enough to charge our EV - there is only one Tesla charger. Breakfast had all the basics with fresh ingredients. Hotel is very well located if you’re looking to explore the beautiful surrounding villages of Piodao, Benfeita, Coja and Fraga da Pena.

The interior design is very luxorious and rooms are spaceious. Pool is clean and with a very nice view. Unfortunately our perfect experience was ruined by the behaviour of the host who wasn't friendly at all and my every request received a firm "no". We felt more like a liability than welcomed guests. That was the only place in Portugal where we didn't meet a smiling face and received a warm welcome.

Very beautiful, small, charming luxurious hotel in a quiet countryside location. Very nicely appointed, large rooms, wood floors, spectacular breakfast in an absolutely gorgeous dining room, former olive producing estate, lots of charm. Grounds are immaculate, very well maintained. Unfortunately, we were not there during warm weather, since the pool looked so inviting. Has spa facilities, which we did not use, but am sure they would be of the same caliber as the rest of the house. Drove into Coimbra in about 45 minutes. Near a schist village we found fascinating. Highly recommend, make sure you get good directions . We got a bit lost trying to find it as there are several Cerdeira s in that area and even a few Quinta da palmeiras.

We started our vacation here with a 5-day stay. This was a perfect start to recover from the busy daily professional life and then fully relexad to continue our journey. It is a beautiful accommodation with a perfect location to meet this. The room was spacious and fully met our expectations. The host and hostess made sure everything went perfectly, from breakfast to the delicious three-course menu for the evening. An address that we would like to share with friends.

We stayed 6 night in this wonderful place. The owners have succeeded in creating a place full of discrete luxury. The hotel is a nice place to relax, the surrounding countryside is magnificent and there are lots of interesting places not far away. Add to this the wonderful food that is prepared with love and you have a fantastic combination. The room we had was superb and although it was very warm outside, the room was always comfortable. Overall an unforgettable holiday stay.

The Quinta is a lovingly restored large old house and associated outbuildings surrounded by orange trees and well-tended gardens. Inside, a great deal of care and attention has been put into the beautifully furnished rooms. As this was the beginning of the season, we were the only guests for the first night, and proprietor Jack suggested we might like to stay in the main house in a lovely suite with wide-ranging views over the surrounding countryside. Breakfast (with orange juice straight from the garden) and the three-course dinner were delightful. Cerdeira turned out to be an excellent base from which to discover this part of Portugal; mountain walks through beautiful spring flowers, waterfalls and (particularly recommended) kayaking on the Mondego with Rock & River. Sadly we could only stay for three nights; by the time we had unwound properly, it was time to leave. We'll have to find at least a week next time. Many thanks to Jack and Ana for creating such a beautiful, peaceful destination, and for the excellent home cooking.

So many things to mention that made our stay so delightful...staring with Jack’s welcome and his efficient operation (and wry humor), Ana’s cooking that made us feel like we were guests in her home, the attention to detail in both service and decor, the generous and beautifully appointed suites, the lovely outdoor areas, and the spectacular view from the front porch. We were three couples traveling together, and all of us could find nothing but superlatives to say about our stay. The relatively remote location may not be for everyone, but we were not inconvenienced in getting to the major sites we wanted to visit, plus we were guided by Jack to some truly amazing places we would not have seen otherwise. A delightfully memorable stay!

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for a couple of nights whilst house hunting. Jack made us feel very welcome throughout our stay. We had a beautiful junior suite, which had the most breathtaking views. The room was cool even though it was still 30 degrees, but there was a fan if you needed. The bed was huge, firm, but I slept like a log for the 2 nights...sleeping for 9 hrs on each evening. Breakfast was tasty, lots of local variety of produce.. The evening meal was the suprise menu, which was actually a really nice change..if your not fussy then you will enjoy it, we enjoyed each of the courses on both nights. The self service bar was really nice, only downside no ice...so I passed on the G&Ts and drank the wonderful wine instead. Loved the pool and having a self service refrigerater and freezer for little treats! Overall it was a fantastic stay, stunning location, high end finish and lovely food.

It was a lovelly weekend just to relax by the pool and getting tanned. In the middle of nowhere, you can ear the birds and some local species. The food is very simple and fresh. You need to order previously the lunch and the dinner and it is a surprise, depending on their freshest products. The worst part was the absence of the aircon in the rooms, but I believe that in the future there will be aircon in the rooms! For the goal of my stay in the Quinta da Palmeira, it was accomplished and I recommend it to people to disconnect from theis busy lifes.
