My sister and I stayed at Thyme while we were visiting the Cotswolds and we are already looking forward to visiting again! The hotel is so peaceful — it was not crowded and is geared more towards adults which we very much appreciated. We took an eclair class offered by the hotel which was so much fun! We ate dinner at the Ox Barn and the Swan which were wonderful! The breakfast at the Ox Barn was soooo good!!!! The Baa Bar is such a cute area to congregate for a drink and some snack — it was also a great way to connect with other hotel guests!

We stayed in the room ‘Mallow,’ which was so quantity decorated but quite small (which what we paid for). The room was exceptionally clean and overall quiet. I would note that there wasn’t much room to hang clothes, but that didn’t bother us. Each night the staff came by and freshened up the room and gave us each a bottle of water. However, there was a pantry room across the hall where we had endless access to water or milk if needed. In terms of location, the hotel is conveniently located to other towns and we found it easy to come and go as we pleased (although we enjoyed the property so much that we didn’t leave as much as we had originally planned).

Dear AVGnyc What an absolutely superb review! Thank you so much for your kindness. We certainly are wonderfully relaxing and peaceful (and only accept children over the age of 12 years). I am so glad you enjoyed a cookery school class while you were with us - the classes really are fun aren't they! Thank you again for all your kind words. It really is appreciated. Kind regards Clare

Thyme is one of the best properties I’ve ever stayed at. I went with my extended family of 10, and we stayed across 6 rooms for 4 nights. Our experience was unmatched. From months prior, the staff was extremely helpful and hospitable in helping us plan our holiday — booking cars, dinners, private events, suggesting day trips, and being very flexible and accommodating with all of our many requests, preferences, and dietary restrictions.

Thyme has something for everyone — I could imagine coming back with a smaller group or a bigger group, and having a fantastic time either way. Enjoying a quiet holiday mostly on the property, or rambling around the nearby towns. You can really make it your own, and the staff is mindful of all your needs and preferences in helping your execute on your dream holiday!

The property is gorgeous and immaculately maintained. The gardens are some of the most beautiful I’ve seen in the world. The food is delicious, and everything is grown on the estate - I think I ate more than I’ve eaten before, and never felt too full or sick because everything was fresh, clean, and so well prepared. The rooms are spacious and beautiful, very well maintained, and all with splendid views of various parts of the grounds.

We played tennis everyday, enjoyed a n large breakfast of fruits, pancakes and eggs at Ox Barn (which I will sorely miss), had Bertioli massages at the spa (the most relaxing spa experience I’ve had!), had a private dinner with 15 people at The Swan, played scrabble at Baa Bar, and bought some homegrown souvenirs at The Boutique.

Whether it’s your first or your 20th time to the English countryside, I cannot recommend Thyme enough. We will all definitely be coming back, and I hope to stay for even longer next time!

Firstly, this place is gorgeous. I mean the fabrics, the aesthetic, the smells s you walk around. I would also say that it's generally spotless. Minus a couple of cob webs in our room (Radish) it was great.

The staff too were fab. Shout out to Guy int he bar who made us feel very welcome and looked after. Enjoy the tip we left you too! Good luck with your new course when you leave...

Anyway, back to the hotel. The main restaurant, while we did enjoy it, the food we thought we quite pricey for the size of portions. Our waiter (John?) was great though.
We wine selections as nice, with some English wines in there, which we always appreciate.

The room (Radish) was lovely, however for us there were a few issues. The first being, there is limited storage space. The only hanging space for clothes was but the front door, which hindered our entry and exit slightly, and also covered the full length mirror.
Secondly, there was no milk in the room, it cam quickly enough though once we ordered it.
Thirdly, we left our Do not disturb' sign on til 11:30 am before heading out, and house cleaning too this as a 'don't come back all day' sign, so when we returned around 4pm, the room was still dirty. This was quickly remediated as they came in the evening on request, but only turned down the bed and gave a general freshening, it didn't seem the full clean.

Finally, and I do find this very odd. A cleaning fee (£50) was added per day of our stay, I have never had this is any hotel. This fee is typically included in the room rate.
Perhaps this is to make their room rate seem lower to be comparative to say Barnsley House or Dormy House?

Overall our stay was great. We enjoyed the staff, bar snacks and general ambiance.

Dear James Thank you for your review. It was great to see you on the weekend. Thank you for your very kind comments for Guy and for James (not John!). Your comments are much appreciated. I apologise that you had to rang for milk but I am so glad it was brought to you so swiftly. I take on board your comments on the room design which I will feed back to our design team. Apologies the housekeeping team thought not to disturb your room but thank you for mentioning you had a turndown service to remedy the situation. To explain the cleaning fee, the £50 additional charge is a one off charge during the stay for anyone bringing a dog (or two dogs as you had with you). This is to facilitate a deep clean after stay. I can't speak for Barnsley House as it is currently closed but I did check with Dormy House and they make a similar charge. Thank you again and I am so glad you had a great overall stay. We really hope to see you again soon. With warmest regards Clare

Pretty destination with Cotswold stone . However we could not find reception when we arrived , sign could not be seen because of diners and sun umbrellas , gate closed to terrace , so lugged our luggage through other rooms to find reception. Not a good start , we were told by staff we were not the first guests to have this problem . Rather muted welcome no management or owners in attendance. Had to drag hand luggage up steep steps to our room in the roof of the Lodge . River mint was its name . No hand gels etc everything in dispensing bottles locked to the walls and no where need bath which hopeless and wardrobe to put things away in.No bedside light on my wife’s side and towelling robes looked and felt worse for wear and inappropriate size for a man. Room v disappointing. Dinner was very expensive . My skate wing cost was £43 including just potatoes. Wine list was v expensive so just settled for wine by the glass which my waiter confided was what most guests did. Went to great local pub next night in Langford which was excellent. The bar was never attended whilst we were there , had to go into dining room to order a drink. This hotel is very pretentious but just does not deliver. Badly needs stronger on site management or owners . Didn’t see other rooms . Had a drink on outside terrace but tables were still dirty from lunchtime with food debris . Certainly not worth £500 a night .

Dear Cecemily Thank you for your review but what sad reading it makes. I understand that you were upgraded but I am sorry that you did not enjoy this room and that we left a piece of hand luggage with you which we could have so easily taken with the other bags. Apologies for that. I apologise if you did not see the bath salts near your bath and if the bedside light was not working - our maintenance team would have loved to have put this right for you. Obviously the style of room was not to your taste as this stunning room generally receives stellar feedback. It may have been that we were too full to offer another style of room - as all rooms at Thyme are very different. We would love for you to try a different style room on another occasion. Apologies again that your stay was not the fabulous experience we always strive to offer our guests. Hopefully, on another occasion, we can put this right. With kindest regards Clare

We expected a five star stay at this property but it only rates two despite the price and hype. The grounds are beautiful and manicured, the staff is friendly, but there it stops. The room rate is expensive, but the running of the guest facility amateur and slipshod in nature. Our garden room was pretty but shabby, with scarred floors, worn rug and uncomfortable, stained armchairs. We were really surprised at the lack of a room safe, which we have not encountered for at least 30 years in high-end hospitality. We were told at Reception that a safe had "not yet" been provided, whatever that means. No thought had obviously been given to a basic provision as guests now need to deposit valuables in the hotel safe when they go out for the day and retrieve them when they return. There is a basic lack of any housekeeping supervision. No-one has taught the chambermaids how to make a bed, so we remade ours. The shower head was 50% blocked; the internet was spotty; cables were hanging down behind the TV; there was no shampoo, just some kind of a cleansing bar on the bed with a long explanation (who is going to read it?); the doorbell did not work. Guests should not have to point out any of this. We were expecting a gourmet breakfast. The scrambled eggs on the first day were beyond disgusting, lumpy in some places and woefully undercooked in others, so one of us tried fried eggs on the second day. A huge mistake, with runny egg whites, so no more eggs for us. We asked to see the owner/manager to discuss all the above rather than write a disparaging review, but the manager was "on a photo shoot". The person from reception who came to our room took no notes and promised to speak to the manager. Many business days have elapsed, without a word from management. She obviously does not care to service guests who take the trouble and time to point matters out. This review has resulted. We will not return to this property.

Beautiful location. Gorgeous buildings and grounds. Fantastic massage. But underwhelming service on arrival. Incredibly difficult to find in the dark. Poor signage and inadequate lighting. And although we were delighted to (and did) pay tips to masseur and waiting staff we were shocked and unimpressed to find a further ‘service charge’ added to our (already expensive) room. Given that we only stayed one night so didn’t need any additional ‘service’ we were not happy. Never had this added to any hotel stay before. And I was charged £100 for no show at Ox Barn despite us actually having eaten there!! I do feel they could have taken care to check this before charging me. Left us feeling very disgruntled on departure. Felt like the hotel was taking advantage which was a shame given the loveliness of so much of the stay. Or perhaps you need to be too rich to notice the odd extra random charges if you want to stay here!!

Dear Seaside34550521908 Many thanks for your review and your kind comments for much of your stay. I am sad to read that your stay was not perfect. I apologise if you you felt you did not receive the warm Thyme welcome that we offer. I aslo apologise if you felt the lighting was inadequate - such a shame as our Christmas lighting is going up as I write and we will be a twinkling delight. I apologise also for the error with the charge for your dinner which I believe was speedily rectified. To explain, there is a room service charge on the final bill which is entirely discretionary; we endeavour to make this as clear as possible by stating it on both the confirmation and also the bill itself. We are more than happy to remove it. Many thanks for staying with us and I hope the loveliness you mention will stay with you. Please do contact me directly for a return visit. We would love to welcome you back to Thyme. With all good wishes, Clare

I’ve rated this trip Average, based on the prices and our experience. If one or two issues had been slightly different, I would rate in very good. Our children had given us a voucher for £400 as a Christmas Present to spend at Thyme. I went onto their website and noted they offered 1 night B and B from £420, and the “from” turned out to be significant. I e mailed them and asked for any “Accessible “ room on no specific date for around the £420 mark. After a couple of days I received a reply saying, yes that would be fine but the price would be £780!
I found that slightly incredulous so e mailed back and asked them to re consider as I felt they were discriminating in the fact that we had asked for nothing special and our date was flexible. To be fair, they replied stating we could have a garden room for £420. But why not say that in the first place?
The location is fabulous, the garden and terraced areas are well kept and we were greeted by the staff in a very friendly and professional manner.
We did not use the Spa facilities so cannot comment on them. Our room was spacious and clean, tea and coffee machine on the side. No fridge, but milk in a small thermos.
We had a pre-dinner drink outside the restaurant/bar area, sitting outside. As my wife was in a wheelchair I asked a member of staff to bring the drinks out to us along with a small bowl of nuts. When we received the bill the next morning they had charged £4.50 for the nuts plus £2.50 Service charge, which I presume was for bringing the drinks and nuts outside, a distance of approximately 20 metres. To us, it’s little touches like this that make the difference and not in a positive way!
We feel that if you are potentially paying over £750 per night then small touches like a bowl of nuts should be complimentary. Dinner was fine but again a little expensive, but we knew that beforehand and the breakfast was table service and again we had no issues there.
Clearly there is a market for this type of accommodation but, to be honest, if we were paying the prices quoted, it would not be somewhere we would return to. That is not meant as a criticism as everyone is free to spend their money in whatever way they choose.
Overall we had a great time and the staff were very accommodating. In terms of Accessibility, it was not ideal, gravel paths and stone steps had to be negotiated and we also suggested a drop down seat in the walk in shower would be a good addition. It is clear that in terms of Accessibility there are a few improvements that could be put in place to facilitate wheelchair users.

The spacious complex with its many buildings is simply marvellous. The houses are in immaculate condition and you immediately feel like you're in another world.
We initially had a small room, it was angled, but this is due to the existing architecture. We were then able to look at a few others and they were all very clean and cosy.
Breakfast and the food in general is always freshly prepared and mostly comes from the hotel's own garden. The service and the food at ‘the Swan at Southrop’ also left us completely satisfied.

Compliments also to the management. They do a great and very professional job.
We will definitely be back.

We traveled for 4 weeks over the summer around London, Oxford, Berkshires, East Anglia and Cotswolds. The worst decision we've EVER made in all of our travels around the UK, or anywhere in the world was booking this overrated hotel (and using Mr. and Mrs. Smith as our booking agent)! In no way does this property offer anything remotely consistent with a luxury property. We booked two rooms in the farmhouse at peak pricing for a total of 6 nights. The rooms were dated, lacked any type of air conditioning, working fans, amenities, basic maintenance, proper daily housekeeping, security and much more. Upon arrival, nobody will greet you or help with luggage, only one person works the front desk which means extremely long wait times, and hotel offerings are never available regardless of day or time. When mentioning activities on the website, the same front desk person seemed confused and wasn't even aware of the activity offerings. The service everywhere on the property was the worst we've ever had, and they only have one restaurant with the same over-priced, overrated limited menu all day with limited availability due to extremely limited servers and staff. Be prepared to wait 45 minutes for a menu each day. One evening, we were told there was no availability, and the property doesn't even provide room service, but luckily we had a granola bar in our bag. The pool seating was always booked days in advance, and all spa treatments unavailable due to staff who were "unable to work" according to the spa. We asked to reserve the tennis court, and the spa gave us one container of flat balls with old racquets we were unable to use. The tennis court hasn't been maintained in years, and was overgrown with plants and leaves. Management provided no response to any our concerns during or after our terrible stay, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, our booking agent wasn't of any help either. We spoke to the front desk, sent emails, and also contacted Mr. and Mrs. Smith. At no time did anyone even acknowledge the situation, only a sarcastic denial of issues! Clearly, the hotel management has an automatic denial as a response to any issue. We definitely will not use Mr. and Mrs. Smith again in the future. I can honestly say that Thyme should be reclassified to a ONE STAR Bed & Breakfast, and if you prefer great service, quality and luxury, this is not a hotel you should visit!

My wife and I dropped into the Baa Bar at 15.00 today for a cup of tea and a coffee, we had visited the establishment some years ago for dinner, as we were in the vicinity we decided to pay a quick visit with a view to book a weekend stay there in the near future.
The girl who took our order for a pot of Tea and a Latte was pleasant and professional, she did ask if we were staying there but I explained that we were just passing by for a drink. I paid in full for the drinks at the point of order.

The restaurant and the bar was not busy at all, however we waited almost 40 minutes for our drinks to arrive, when they were served there was no apology at all offered for the amount of time we waited for the drinks, quite what took so long is mystery as no explanation was given!

The establishment is pleasing to the eye in appearance but has a soulless atmosphere, almost sterile in our opinion.

The quality of the drinks and presentation was acceptable, but for £10.13 one would expect this to be the case!
Needless to say based upon our recent experience today we will not be booking a weekend stay there.

We live in the Cotswolds we are frequently dining out and staying at other venues in the area, we think that the service we received was extremely poor, underwhelmed is how we would describe our experience and we will definitely not be making a return visit.
